Since this isn't about gameplay or anything, I'll punt it to a more suitable place.

Cathedral - Voodoo Fire

You'll never hear a metal tune more tongue-in-cheek than this one. :P

...If they don't change that shit when it crosses the pond, they're crazy. :P  Of course, none of this is concrete fact, so it might be much ado about nothing.

It was bound to happen eventually.

So far in the career of my increasingly slutty-looking mage Alisandre, I've managed to be grouped up with at least one person I know.  But as fate would have it, no one was around tonight and I was bored to tears, so I hooked up with a group of strangers heading to Gnomeregan.

I knew things were gonna be bad when the group leader wanted to try and run it with four people.  Two of whom were below level 30.  After I delicately told him he might well be a fucking idiot, he found someone else...but it didn't matter.  This group was doomed.

Why?  Because as it turns out, I was the only person who had ever even stepped foot in Gnomer, the only one who had even a shred of experience doing the instance.  Keep in mind, my exposure to Gnomer was being ran through by a flock of 60s seven months ago to get that sexy spinning hat.

It would become evident as time wore on that I had made a grievous error in going there with these people.  While the other mage I was partnered with seemed to have their head on (relatively) straight, the rest of these people were morons.  I'm not sure I ever saw the hunter use his bow.  The priest was SWPing like a motherfucker, but he damn sure wasn't firing off the heals in a swift fashion.

But that warrior...oh my God.  In a group that wasn't exactly shy about hitting the enemies I sheeped (the other mage was busy burning all their mp using AE to hit one enemy), this idiot got the gold star.  There were this group of three troggs.  I hit one with a poly, and the other two came charging.  The war intercepts them both...then pulls them over to the sheeped enemy and deliberately gave it a smack.  I hoped he would die, but I think he drank a potion.  Pity.

That's when I bailed.  I've never abandoned a group before then (unless you count the mouthy hunter Dagg and I abandoned in Westfall :P), and I hope I don't have to again anytime soon.  No more partying without someone who I know is competent in their role.

At least I got Techbot, though. :P

Therion - The Invincible

Because it is awesome.

Okay folks, looking at the last few replies, it appears I need to come in and make one of the rules clear:

The "cranky and jaded old gamer" schtick is mine and mine only.

Remember that.

Congrats to Tim for spending six hours in MC and not putting his fist through his screen.

Congrats to John for telling me how his dad makes so much money in the game.

Congrats to me for taking that information and adapting it, thereby making 65 gold in just over a week.  Not much to you high-level fucks, but that ain't bad for someone in the low 30s. :P

I've been listening to the live version of X Japan's "Art of Life" recently.  Good stuff.  If you think I'm posting the lyrics to a song that long, you're fucking crazy. :P
3505  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Are Storylines Really So Important? on: March 25, 2006, 06:17:44 PM
The greatest plot and characters in existence don't mean a damn to me if the gameplay blows.  I'm with you; I don't see how a good storyline can be the main concern of the average RPG player.  I'd much rather play a fun game with a mediocre plot (say, Legend of Mana) than a boring game with an interesting premise (say, Xenosaga).

If only I had seen this thread before my copy of Oblivion arrived.  I could have ranted for ten paragraphs. :P
3506  Media / Brush and Quill / Book Thread Continued on: March 23, 2006, 11:58:07 PM
I'm currently rereading one of my favorite stories, "The War Hound and the World's Pain" by Michael Moorcock.  Like most of his stuff, it's short but sweet.

Next on the agenda is to refresh myself with Janny Wurts' Mistwraith books.  I just found on today that the most recent entry in the series came out a few months ago, and I've forgotten damn near every detail from the earlier books. :P

That's too early for me, too. :P  I was thinking more along the lines of seven or eight EST.

Another Messiah - Dark Dreams, My Child

Think Opeth with an oboe.  Good, unique shit.

Running Wild - Conquistadores

The most awesomely ridiculous chorus that has ever existed, overdone even by '80s metal standards, eclipsing even that cheesy "shout it out" shit in Priest's "Ram It Down". :P
3510  The Rest / The Helper Monkey / Port Forwarding and Related Bullshit on: March 23, 2006, 12:07:31 AM
Can someone link me to a decent online tutorial on how to forward ports?  Preferrably one relatively jargon-free and with lots of pretty pictures.

Thanks. :P
