662  Media / Single-Player RPGs / voice acting so bad its funny. on: July 02, 2008, 10:15:23 AM

Unless you understand Japanese, that statement couldn't be more invalid. If you don't understand the words spoken, there is no way you could evaluate the quality of the voice actor's presentation of them.

That's the beauty of it. Acting could be horrible and you'd never know except in the extreme cases. Anime and game characters also have a tendency to say, well, stupid shit and it's a bit more forgiving to read it than it is to hear it.
663  Media / Single-Player RPGs / "Countdown Site" = Chrono Trigger DS? remake, new on: July 02, 2008, 09:09:40 AM
My interest all depends if it's really a remake. 'Remake' is used as kind of a blanket term, but there's actual remakes and then there's ports with a few extras. Remakes combine the nostalgia with a new experience. I'd only be interested in ports if I actually wanted to play them on the road. My DS generally doesn't go farther than a trip to the bathroom though :P

665  The Rest / General Discussions / Nerd girls are sexy now, it seems. on: June 24, 2008, 05:36:16 PM
I'd always found 'cute' to be just as attractive as 'sexy'. And cute often ends up being nerdy. Of course the articles theme seems to be a lot less 'cute is hot' as 'Dallas cheerleaders want to come to your house for some world of warcraft and then have sex with you.'.

I think you should change your avatar to commemorate the achievement. :P
667  Media / Single-Player RPGs / FFTA2 on: June 20, 2008, 09:11:00 PM
I tried the first just a bit ago and gave up on it because while I enjoyed building up characters and such the game I was building them up in just wasn't very good.(Not even counting the horrible story and judge system. I knew those were faults before hand and accepted them before playing)

Looking up info on the sequel I wasn't impressed. Not much new on existing jobs and in fact some were dumbed down to make 'new' ones. Green mage is a 'new' class that can cast things like protect and shell. And white mages can't cast protect and shell anymore. Things like that can be overlooked if they make a much better game, but doing that in the first place doesn't give me a ton of faith that they're making a good game.

I'll have to see what people say about it. Can't really trust reviews too much because it has final fantasy in the name and because portables are held at a lower standard.

It feels like blind patriotism to support the 360. It's like an American car in the 70s. Fast but unreliable and prone to breakdown.

I don't even have a 360. So it's without bias when I say ps3 failed. I don't have a current gen console. I waited for ps3 to go down to a reasonable price and to start to succeed. Neither happened. I play WoW, DS and RPGs for the PS2, which still come out because RPG companies won't commit to a current console.

Eventually though, I imagine I'll get a 360 and perhaps a wii as well along with a huge backlog. I guess I'm waiting for SE to put the nail in the coffin and announce FF13 as multi platform. If they stay exclusive PS3 it could actually turn the tide and others would follow, but I don't see that happening.

Can't really blame them, PS3 is a huge failure.

What you can blame them for is the SO3 plot twist. It's difficult to make a plot twist so bad it kills the series forever, but they did. It's like if you were watching spider-man or something and he takes off his mask and says 'I'm Tobey Maguire and I'm just playing Spider-Man. None of this is real, it's just movie based on a comic for kids. What are you, stupid?'

Fuck Star Ocean.

That's because Legendia hit it with a truck.

I swear, I almost didn't play abyss because of legendia. I knew it was worst than other tales and not made by the usual team, yet still it made me question if I had bad tastes liking the series in the first place. Fortunately a few months after abyss came out I decided to give it a chance since people had good things to say about it. And I was glad I did.
671  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Unoriginal Topic: Favorite Battle System on: June 14, 2008, 06:25:17 AM
I'm hopping on the press turn bandwagon. Play well, you dominate. Auto pilot and you're dead. Very refreshing when most rpgs are balanced around you being 7.

Dark Cloud was simple yet fun. And if you got bored you could always get jump on your mech. The games long to a fault(Or perhaps to my fault, for getting to into building weapons up) and I never actually beat the thing, but I tend to dig the game out every year or so.

Chrono Trigger was great way back. You didn't just pick your party members for what they could do, you picked them for what they could do as a team. Combination attacks have been done since CT, but they've always been a side dish where in CT they were the main course.

Fire Emblem has the second best SRPG battle system because you can't ressurect characters.

FE games are the only ones that have been able to pull off real death for me. Unless it's like, my only healer or something, if someone dies I play a violin and a single tear runs down my face and I move on. Any other game and it's pointless. Someone dies and it's time to hit the reset button. Maybe it's because there's huge casts and you don't put as much into your characters as far as customization goes. Calvary dies? Another one will come along. May or may not have as good stats, but he'll get the job done.

Written preview aside, check those videos out. Those just sold the game for me.

Gave FF tactics advance a try. Judge system and story suck, but those were flaws I knew about and accepted before I played.

I like building up my characters and the whole clan thing. But it's like the game whispers to me 'You're putting effort into a game that's not very good'. It does this by displaying advanced battle tactics like white mages running to the front lines and meleeing me for 1 damage. Which is bad AI even before you take counter attack into account.

Eh, I've liked games I've acknowledged as bad before. SMT:Kuzonoha raidou for example. Clunky, repetitive and your cat holds your hand through the whole story. But the game had style. FFTA doesn't have style, but it has a class system that I'm a sucker for. Still, I'm leaning against continuing it and just digging out the original to get my fix.

Google, for some unknown reason since it's my default browser search engine.

RPG fan.

http://www.somethingawful.com -Really just in it for the usually entertaining weekly photoshops.

http://ffxi.killvoid.com/ -Old ffxi site that's still on the list for some reason even though I don't play. Still curiosity brings me in there every few months to see how the games changing. The halfhearted attempts SE makes generally amuse me. Moogles in selbina? People have only been asking for them since the game came out years ago. Why bother listening now that everyone's left?

Some torrent sites I probably shouldn't link :P

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com (The forums indeed being a hive of scum and villainy. And trolls. Lots of trolls.), along with some wow related sites like http://www.wowhead.com/

I usually have a gamefaqs page bookmarked to whatever game I currently or most recently used it for. Right now it's http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/582958.html since I'm replaying nocturne. I try not to use walkthroughs on games if I can help it, but I like looking up abilities and such as well as mechanics of how things work. If a game has a vague ability like 'increases damage with swords' or 'occasionally counter opponents attacks' that's not enough for me. I want a percent, and that's what gamefaqs is for :P

http://www.youtube.com/

Also a folder filled with comic links, but we already have threads on those pop up every few months so I'll spare you.
