I'm hopping on the press turn bandwagon. Play well, you dominate. Auto pilot and you're dead. Very refreshing when most rpgs are balanced around you being 7.
Dark Cloud was simple yet fun. And if you got bored you could always get jump on your mech.
The games long to a fault(Or perhaps to my fault, for getting to into building weapons up) and I never actually beat the thing, but I tend to dig the game out every year or so.
Chrono Trigger was great way back. You didn't just pick your party members for what they could do, you picked them for what they could do as a team. Combination attacks have been done since CT, but they've always been a side dish where in CT they were the main course.
Fire Emblem has the second best SRPG battle system because you can't ressurect characters.
FE games are the only ones that have been able to pull off real death for me. Unless it's like, my only healer or something, if someone dies I play a violin and a single tear runs down my face and I move on. Any other game and it's pointless. Someone dies and it's time to hit the reset button. Maybe it's because there's huge casts and you don't put as much into your characters as far as customization goes. Calvary dies? Another one will come along. May or may not have as good stats, but he'll get the job done.
