They're really crappy replacements. It should have ended with L dying. Or him winning instead. Or dying AND winning somehow or another. Whatever, Mello and Near suck and things start to drag on besides afterwords. Still, without spoiling it the ending delivers and it's worth sticking around for.

Jimmy's dogs always win these threads. It's not a competition..but they do :P I like Yoda, the cat that looks like he's doing a rude gesture and the goat too though.

Sadly I'm allergic to both cats and dogs, even though I love both. My asthma, which is normally practically nonexistent becomes severe around dogs(And I grew up with a yellow lab in the house and tried to downplay it because, well, he was my dog.) Cats aren't so bad, they'll make me sneeze and if I'm not sure to wash my hands after petting one my eyes will swell up if I rub them later on. A dog will make me regret being around him unable to resist playing with him. The cat allergies on the other hand seem worth the price if I'm around one. If they'll LET me near them anyway. Cats are dicks :P

I think one of the big reasons people like V is it's similarities to I and II. They basically de-evolved the series with V to be more like the earlier games. I don't think this is nessasarily a negative thing, as I loved suikoden V. But if you didn't like the early games, or never played them, then I'm sure V loses something.

Warrior's fury tree looks to have really gotten the shaft. At 35/5/21 it doesn't affect me though. Meanwhile revenge is buffed to 400-500(!) damage and devastate attacks with both hands when dual wielding to help with soloing. They want me to go back to my old protection spec, and I just may if things go through.

Millenia dying and not dying didn't seem to get to me. I guess because when someone dies in a game(Or tv, or a move, or a book) I very much assume they aren't dead. It's not until the end that I think 'wow, that person's really dead?'. Of course by that point it's to late for any emotional reaction. Being bait and switched too often killed most death scenes for me.(Although Tidus swimming at the end of FFX after dying ruined the ending for me. It was really a beautiful ending followed by "Jus' kiddin', he's fine') What got me more with Grandia was this...

It annoyed me that if Millenia a repressed part of Elena's personallity that they stayed seperate. Millenia should go back into Elena to make a balanced personality. And they don't, just so the player can imagine Ryudo coming back from his journey and picking whichever the player thought was hotter. That just came off as throwing story asside for fanboys. What's worst is both of them waiting desperately for him to come back for her when, if you're going to stay two people, he can't choose both and someone's going to be devastated.

Then again as I'm one not to make 'myself' the main character, I kinda get the impression that Ryudo probably wouldn't come back for either of them :P

I didn't post there specifically, but I remember saying SMT:Devil summoner was so chock full of style with it's setting and art that they'd have to seriously fuck up the gameplay for me not to like it.

And you know what? They fucked up the gameplay. Simple gameplay, but that doesn't nessasarily mean bad. Simple gameplay with unresponsive controls though, sucks ass. Yet I STILL liked it anyway, just because everything else was so cool.

Let's see, what else...

VP2 I think delivered.

Kingdom hearts 2 was really good, but despite some originals(Like going black and white on us) there was too much going back to the same places we went the first game. But as the game was better that's easy to overlook. KH3 though, better not be having us going through agrabah and halloween town again.

Xenosaga III I was wary about, but it turned out to be great. The story was better because they actually had to TELL it instead of dragging it out 3 more games. The battle system was actually FUN. Mech battles didn't have the gameplay of non-mech battles, but did something both XS 1 and 2 AND xenogears didn't. It got the 'feel' of it right. These giant robots came off as badass and it was a joy to tear shit up with them.

Suikoden V was a blast. A lot of talk once it came out of it being 'even better than II'. While actually playing it I felt it was competing as well. Although now quite a bit of time after playing it SII definantly stands out more in my mind, then again that could just be because I played it several times :P

I'll give it credit for one thing. I do like that Jonathan Morris wasn't near as bad on the prettyboy scale as the heroes usually are(He is in that art, but they didn't go with that hair in the final version). I remember playing SoTN back when I was a teenager and my mom asking if Alucard was a witch. Less androgyny is definantly welcome.

 Though that said I really don't think anime style works for castlevania. The normal anime style just doesn't do dark and creepy. It's bright and colorful. And bright and colorful just doesn't work for Dracula.

The whole deal with him and the farmgirl, you can almost see him settling down. Two things stop this, one being his mere existence is too powerful and effects nature and those around him and the other being the girls own town sold her out to get carried off and tortured to death(To be ammo for a cannon that's powered by hate and despair even). And it strenthens his resolve. That it was silly that he thought he could have a life like that and that the world NEEDED him as ruler.

 And when you beat him at the end you can't help but thinking the world just may be fucked.


With that said, I think there's very few good sympathetic villains. It's usually done SO badly. Either the villain looks like a complete fool or you feel like they think you're a complete fool thinking you'd buy the chunks that gets spewed in your direction to try and build up sympathy.

When you're playing a game and the characters start to say they're more then just characters in a video game it just breaks suspension of disbelief. Why? Because they ARE just characters in a video game. That's the reality of the situation, and pointing it out directly goes against the theme that they're more than that.

I liked one point it made. Wasn't the main theme, just a little thing said when you went into some dungeon and the evolved winged half elves were there with blank faces. Something along the lines of 'How can there be heaven if you lose your humanity'. Which of all the anti religious themes in games was the only argument presented that meant a damn outside entertaining storytelling(Which by that point wasn't entertaining storytelling because every rpg uses it).

 If you DON'T lose your humanity it can't be heaven, it'd just be a reflection of earth. If you DO, what kind of heaven is that?

 But yeah, the overall story did suck. Characters helped carry it though.

The first FFTA's concept of 'little kids find a magical book that transports them to the fantasy land of Ivalice!' was enough to turn me away from playing it.

 And this FFTA's main male leads design alone is enough to make me not want to play it. Yellow overalls? Those shoes? The beret? A pin on medalion with with a four leaf clover on it? Game characters are all dressed ecentricly, but seriously.

I loved FFT. I want more. But when they aim these games at 9 year olds it really, really makes me not want to play them.

No doubt she will be.

And on that note, it's odd how WAs can on one hand have a great character like Raquel(Who's strong, but doesn't just act like a man like every other 'tough' female character) and on the other hand have the most stereotypical, 'I can't wait until I get a airship just so I can throw you off of it' females as well.

I think this is also one of the reasons for liking japanese versions of games(And anime) better. It's not so much it being better, but it masks how silly what you're watching/playing is and holds suspension of disbelief better.

Though that's not so much the case with FFXII, which wasn't poorly written. I didn't find Fran's voice to be annoying or anything, but I wouldn't say it was well done either. She sounded..I don't know. Bored? Timid? Not really fitting for a sultry bunny girl. Now if FFXIII has a librarian joining your party then nab that actress back up :P
