826  Media / Single-Player RPGs / FFXII One Chance Question... HELP! on: November 11, 2006, 05:25:47 PM
I got the spear the other night..and didn't bother equiping it because I feel too overpowered anyway and unlike the best gun(Which being the hypocrit I am, I DO use) it didn't really feel like I earned it.

Fighting through the dungeon I CLEARLY wasn't supposed to be at yet was a blast though.

Staffs - Better for black mages, higher attack/magic power than rods.

The elemental staves in particular should be noted as they give a HUGE boost to spell power of the matching element. They're a must if you want to make a good magic attacker.

Okay, haven't had much time to play so I'm really at the beginning, but I'm stuck.... in the Giza Plains. I'm looking for Jinn and can't get to the location due to two monsters at the extreme south area that kill me with one. Hit. What do I need to do here? Something with those dark crystals? Thanks.

You don't need to go past the werewolves, head east of there.

They really shouldn't have grouped all the 'augments' together, that's what hurt customization. It comes down to is your character primarily a melee or a mage? Melee takes the bottom augment section, mages take the topside(And eventually everyone becomes hybrid when you've more points then you know what to do with). Fill in gear/spell/ability slots as you buy/find them and gambits when you realize 'I don't have enough gambit slots'.

Not a game breaking flaw or anything though. I like the battle system and I have one GIANT world to explore so I'm satisfied.

What's with all the "Vaan" hate? Personally, I like him.

I find him likable enough, I think people are just getting tired of the protaganist who has no right to be the protaganist. Balthier, Basch or Ashe could all claim the title of main character before him easily. Amusingly enough Balthier actually does :P

I'm not too far into the game(Though I have put a lot of time into it, I just have wanderlust and go running off everywhere BUT where I'm supposed to for no real reason until I find a guard who won't let me go any further or monsters that are level 'Rape you' and have to turn back), but barring major plot twists Vaan doesn't even need to be in the game.

The tales of legendia character quests are cool for the actual character story...but the gameplay is TERRIBLE. For one thing all it is is going back through the old dungeons, but what REALLY makes it bad is the battles. The enemies just have too many damn HPs for a action rpg. This doesn't make the random encounters hard...it makes them annoying.

Even using holy bottles it just frustrated me playing the game. If you don't want to play it, don't.(Or just do Will's..I liked his story a bit more)
833  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Console RPGs with MMO style mixed in on: October 27, 2006, 11:39:36 PM
There's good things and bad things about mmorpgs as well as things that work for a mmorpg that wouldn't work for a single player game. For example putting a huge amount of time into a quest or leveling. In a mmorpg when you earn something you get to keep it for months, years however long you play. On a single player rpg when you beat it what you worked for is gone. So it really depends what elements would be added to a single player game.

I'm pretty heavily against expansions though. I get the impression that if expansions got popular on consoles that developers would hold back things, make us pay twice for something we should only have had to pay once for. This is already done to a small extent with improved rereleases(Which thankfully we usually get the rereleased version in the states the first time), only much worse.

I'm not even fond of expansions for mmorpgs, the $13 you're giving them each month is supposed to be in part for them to add new content. I mean, I may look forward to a new expansion and the $30 isn't a big deal, but I don't like the idea of having to pay for one when I already AM paying them.

Found it average. It could have been great, but the game dangles all sorts of cool things for you that you want to use, but can't because you just don't have the space for it.

I think I'm going to wait and see how that translation turns out before I import. Some people were talking of shoddy translation(Not engrish, just badly done) and hoping the US version would clean it up. Of course this is from preview screenshots, it may HAVE been cleaned up already.

I did end up importing the first one from play-asia though. It was before the rerelease and I just couldn't FIND the thing. Actually not any more expensive fortunantly since Jp ds titles are cheaper. And bless them for not forcing me to use UPS like every other online game site I've ever ordered from has and just plain mailing it. UPS won't deliver if you're not home(Or rather the online stores won't let them) and it's ALWAYS been a pain in the ass for me to get anything I order.

Ok, so i never got through Star Ocean 3. So I am not sure what the big plot twist that ate balls was

Oh it was bad.

(Spoilers for BOTH games)
The twist was the whole star ocean universe was a video game. It might not have been as hideous a twist if you weren't PLAYING a video game, but when you're sitting there playing a game and the characters in the game are talking about how they aren't just characters in a game...it's fucking stupid. It's like when a cartoon character says 'What do you think this is, a cartoon?', except instead of the pain lasting 5 seconds from a bad one liner it lasts for hours.

The time travel twist in VP2, which basically stops the first game from ever happening can't hold a candle to it(I didn't even have a problem with it). Cliche as time travel is they really couldn't make silmeria without pulling a dues ex machina out their ass. You know what happens to Silmeria from the first game. She fails and gets trapped in that crystal prison thing.

Picked this up with Tales of Abyss(Which almost went over my head since I thought it was the DS game that I was planning to skip because...well...just look at  it... http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/talesofthetempest/ss-001.jpg ) and I'm really loving it. Battle system enjoyable enough, but it's the rest of the game that has me. I knew I'd like the game before I even played it as long as they seriously didn't mess up the battle system. The unique setting, art style(Although the men could use a bit less mascara) and detective theme just beat the crap out of the standard fare.
838  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Fire Emblem -- Why do I play it??? on: October 17, 2006, 06:00:10 PM
I don't reset when someone dies in FE, unless it's my only healer or something. It's part of what makes the game good.

Though character death certainly doesn't work for all games. FFT for example, you just put to much effort into a character to start one over. Although it's not usually a issue since you have 3 turns to revive someone, it's still pointless design because NOBODY is going to not reset if it happens.
839  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Castlevania ~ Curse of Darkness on: October 16, 2006, 05:22:26 PM
I can't argue the flaws that reviews point out in the game, but nonetheless I found it to be a fun game. Not there yet, but step in the right direction towards a handheld quality castlevania on a console.
840  The Rest / General Discussions / N. Korea "possibly" Conducts Nuclear Weapons Test on: October 09, 2006, 11:46:16 PM
It's really tough to say. I'm sure they DO need nukes to stop us from attacking them, Bush flat out put them on the list calling them part of a 'Axis of Evil'. There's really nothing else they can do to protect themselves.

It's really a issue of do they JUST want to deter the US? Or do they want to deter the US so they can go wild attacking their neighbors? One's justifiable, as sad a situation as it is. The other's not.
