826  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Console RPGs with MMO style mixed in on: October 27, 2006, 11:39:36 PM
There's good things and bad things about mmorpgs as well as things that work for a mmorpg that wouldn't work for a single player game. For example putting a huge amount of time into a quest or leveling. In a mmorpg when you earn something you get to keep it for months, years however long you play. On a single player rpg when you beat it what you worked for is gone. So it really depends what elements would be added to a single player game.

I'm pretty heavily against expansions though. I get the impression that if expansions got popular on consoles that developers would hold back things, make us pay twice for something we should only have had to pay once for. This is already done to a small extent with improved rereleases(Which thankfully we usually get the rereleased version in the states the first time), only much worse.

I'm not even fond of expansions for mmorpgs, the $13 you're giving them each month is supposed to be in part for them to add new content. I mean, I may look forward to a new expansion and the $30 isn't a big deal, but I don't like the idea of having to pay for one when I already AM paying them.

Found it average. It could have been great, but the game dangles all sorts of cool things for you that you want to use, but can't because you just don't have the space for it.

I think I'm going to wait and see how that translation turns out before I import. Some people were talking of shoddy translation(Not engrish, just badly done) and hoping the US version would clean it up. Of course this is from preview screenshots, it may HAVE been cleaned up already.

I did end up importing the first one from play-asia though. It was before the rerelease and I just couldn't FIND the thing. Actually not any more expensive fortunantly since Jp ds titles are cheaper. And bless them for not forcing me to use UPS like every other online game site I've ever ordered from has and just plain mailing it. UPS won't deliver if you're not home(Or rather the online stores won't let them) and it's ALWAYS been a pain in the ass for me to get anything I order.

Ok, so i never got through Star Ocean 3. So I am not sure what the big plot twist that ate balls was

Oh it was bad.

(Spoilers for BOTH games)
The twist was the whole star ocean universe was a video game. It might not have been as hideous a twist if you weren't PLAYING a video game, but when you're sitting there playing a game and the characters in the game are talking about how they aren't just characters in a game...it's fucking stupid. It's like when a cartoon character says 'What do you think this is, a cartoon?', except instead of the pain lasting 5 seconds from a bad one liner it lasts for hours.

The time travel twist in VP2, which basically stops the first game from ever happening can't hold a candle to it(I didn't even have a problem with it). Cliche as time travel is they really couldn't make silmeria without pulling a dues ex machina out their ass. You know what happens to Silmeria from the first game. She fails and gets trapped in that crystal prison thing.
830  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army on: October 18, 2006, 04:57:34 PM
Picked this up with Tales of Abyss(Which almost went over my head since I thought it was the DS game that I was planning to skip because...well...just look at  it... http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/talesofthetempest/ss-001.jpg ) and I'm really loving it. Battle system enjoyable enough, but it's the rest of the game that has me. I knew I'd like the game before I even played it as long as they seriously didn't mess up the battle system. The unique setting, art style(Although the men could use a bit less mascara) and detective theme just beat the crap out of the standard fare.
831  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Fire Emblem -- Why do I play it??? on: October 17, 2006, 06:00:10 PM
I don't reset when someone dies in FE, unless it's my only healer or something. It's part of what makes the game good.

Though character death certainly doesn't work for all games. FFT for example, you just put to much effort into a character to start one over. Although it's not usually a issue since you have 3 turns to revive someone, it's still pointless design because NOBODY is going to not reset if it happens.
832  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Castlevania ~ Curse of Darkness on: October 16, 2006, 05:22:26 PM
I can't argue the flaws that reviews point out in the game, but nonetheless I found it to be a fun game. Not there yet, but step in the right direction towards a handheld quality castlevania on a console.
833  The Rest / General Discussions / N. Korea "possibly" Conducts Nuclear Weapons Test on: October 09, 2006, 11:46:16 PM
It's really tough to say. I'm sure they DO need nukes to stop us from attacking them, Bush flat out put them on the list calling them part of a 'Axis of Evil'. There's really nothing else they can do to protect themselves.

It's really a issue of do they JUST want to deter the US? Or do they want to deter the US so they can go wild attacking their neighbors? One's justifiable, as sad a situation as it is. The other's not.

Sorry, wasn't thinking of 'nothing happens' as a spoiler :P

Went ahead and took out a line.

The supportive abilities to issue comands to buff your characters or take formation were a pretty neat concept, but unfortunantly wasn't enough to bring up such a 'eh' combat system.

My main problem though was how everything just fell appart when I picked the non-human side. It kinda felt like the game wanted to drill it in your head that A.The main character was a TOTAL moron who was completely ignorant of the situation and that B.you, the player, picked the 'wrong' side(Though I'd imagine that it probably would have did this whichever side I picked). Then there was the characters and the homebase. I went from a cool town to basically a shack and despite lots of character choices I didn't really want to use any of them.

Nail in the coffin was the ending. No conclusion whatsoever.
836  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix + to come with full CoM remake. on: September 24, 2006, 11:06:00 PM
For kingdom hearts II(not chains) I think it's kinda bad practice when companies do things like this with recent releases. It's another thing if a game is a few years old. And even another if a game is COMPLETELY reworked for a new system(CoM remake itself isn't a problem), but they should be redoing their latest big game...TWICE. It's profitable obviously, but if they had more content to add they should have put it in the original in the first place.

For com thoughts specifically...

I believe in the heart of the cards!

That trailer was awesome.
838  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra on: September 17, 2006, 11:16:28 PM
I'm really liking the game. Assides from the music and KOSMOS not being a badass with no regard for human life like in the first game it's vastly improved over the first two. First and foremost, the battle system no longer sucks. It's even enjoyable. Ether attacks are actually powerful and they fixed the horribly frustrating boost system from XSII(Which I rank as the worst battle system I'd ever played in a rpg, having to just sit there several rounds and get beat on most of the fight while you boost, since that's the only way to do worthwhile damage.) So now you've got good story and gameplay and they finally made a solid game. And almost as important as the gameplay changes, chaos found himself a decent pair of pants.

Oddly enough I haven't really noticed the bad dialouge people are talking about. Only thing that really stands out is Jr's 'Try again in ten years', though I don't find that so much bad as cliche. It's delivered well enough and it's certainly better than his old 'Sayonara, baby' catchphrase.

Of course I won't deny the existence of bad dialouge. I guess it's just that sci fi and bad dialouge go hand in hand, as such having seen enough sci fi I don't notice it anymore :P

i can echo what just about everyone else said
tri ace = yes
xbox360 = no

Just about everyone else = two people who expressed disappointment?

I would be, except I'm not sure how much effort they'd put into making a xbox game.
840  Media / Single-Player RPGs / New Tri-Ace RPG, Infinite Undiscovery on: September 14, 2006, 10:21:20 PM
Infinite Undiscovery.

Ignoring that it's engrish I wonder what they're trying to say making a title like that. Is the theme of the game to go around not finding anything?
