2101  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Tales of Vesperia - Special Edition on: August 04, 2008, 07:13:59 PM

The special edition version of the game comes in a SteelBook case with its own unique cover art by longtime Tales character designer Kosuke Fujishima. The packaging itself is really high-quality, but what’s inside is even more exciting. We’ve combed through the music archives at Tales Studio in Japan and put together a bonus 10th anniversary soundtrack CD that will be included in every special edition package. Covering some of the series’ musical highlights from past and present, the CD contains 25 tracks, with 14 songs from Tales of Vesperia, two from Tales of Phantasia, two from Tales of Destiny, four from Tales of Symphonia and three from Tales of the Abyss.

The special edition version of Tales of Vesperia will be available in limited quantities exclusively through select retailers for a suggested retail price of $69.99. Tales of Vesperia ships to retailers on August 26, so check back here soon for more information about the game!

This is totally mine.
2102  Media / Single-Player RPGs / PS3 or Xbox 360? on: August 03, 2008, 02:29:38 PM
If you buy a PS3 now, you will be limited to the following RPGs from now to the end of the year:

Enchanted Arms
Disgaea 3 (August)
Rise of the Argonauts (3rd quarter)
Fallout 3 (4th quarter)
Valkyria Chronicles (November)

Versus a 360:
Enchanted Arms
Phantasy Star Universe
Blue Dragon
Eternal Sonata
Mass Effect
Lost Odyssey
Tales of Vesperia (August)
Infinite Undiscovery (September)
Rise of the Argonauts (3rd quarter)
Fable 2 (October)
Fallout 3 (4th quarter)
The Last Remnant (November)

I think the answer is pretty clear.  The 360 beats the PS3 in both quantity and quality in the RPG genre... and any other genre for that matter.  I recommend owning both because each platform has their exclusives, but get a 360 first.  Get a PS3 later.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon and saying card-based battle systems blow.

Getting Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Fable 2, Valkyria Chronicles, and The Last Remnant.

Of the list, Infinite Undiscovery, Fable 2, and Valkyria Chronicles are the three I'm looking forward to the most.

I remember Kadamose since someone mentioned him.  I could not for the life of me believe that guy was for real.  I don't say this lightly given my psychology and counseling background, but he's one dude I'd commit to the wacky shack without hesitation.

Speaking of Kadamose, he's still around in a sense... just not here.  It's been a few months since I last spoke with him, but JD and I were the only two people he seemed to get along with.  Everyone else seemed to be a target in some fashion, and most people would take the bait.  I'd say he's one of the earliest internet trolls.

I'll say this much.  I don't miss modding forums one bit.  Not that I really did anything... I mostly just sat back and let everyone go at it.  Well, until it was banning time for dumb people.

Reflecting back on my mannerisms, I've definitely mellowed out over the years.  I'm less... confrontational, but I'm definitely a lot more sarcastic.

Since Angelo mentioned the sigs... I think Mike still has them on his hard drive since he showed me a lot of old stuff on his computer when I visited last year.  Maybe I should shoot him an email and ask him to post all those staff RPGBoard sigs in here just so we can have a good laugh.

Looking back at this thread, it's funny how way off I was on FFXIII.

Ultima 2. This wasn't by choice, mind, as it was in the UC with everything else (Except for the Underworld and Worlds of Aventure games which were actually good).

It's not so much that it's BAD, because none of the first three ultimas were that great. It's just that it's easily the retardedest game in the Ultima series. I can't really EXPLAIN why. Just go look at some city maps and read about it. 90% of the game doesn't really serve a purpose, basically.

I loved how you had to BUY hit points in the first two Ultima games.  Enemies could attack you diagonally but you couldn't, they could move diagonally but you couldn't, you constantly had to buy food which drained stupidly fast... all sorts of nonsense to drag the game out as long as possible.  It was like an MMORPG with considerably less plot and considerably less content.

I concur with your assessment of Ultima 2.  I didn't like it when I was a kid, and I sure as hell wouldn't like it now.  Ultima 4 was the first in the series that I genuinely liked, but I could never beat it since the dungeon disk was corrupted, so half the dungeons didn't work right.

Speaking of which, they really should do a proper Tales of Phantasia remake with a modern Tales engine.  I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Agreed. Despite the technical stuff that doesn't run like it should all the time, the game has pretty good graphics. The system can't handle everything that was going on which is why all that crap happens.

The biggest bottleneck was the DVD drive.  This is why I can't wait for the fall dashboard update that'll let us install the game onto the hard drive.  It will have little to no impact on games like Lego Star Wars, but on Unreal Engine 3 games... it will make a huge difference, especially Mass Effect.

My Wii is collecting dust.  I enjoyed Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, and Super Mario Galaxy was interesting.  Super Smash Bros Brawl didn't last too long due to the overhyped single player adventure mode which got boring quickly, and the fact that online play with the system sucks.

At this point, I'm kinda waiting for Samba de Amigo to ship, but that's all I have planned for the system.  I watched footage of Tales of Symphonia 2, and the game rubs me the wrong way... I don't like the new characters, the original voice actors for old characters aren't present, and it just looks like a cheap cash-in.  Going to wait for reviews, because I loved Symphonia to death, and I don't want to tarnish that enjoyment with some potentially mediocre sequel.
2114  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Holy Crap. Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 on: July 18, 2008, 08:08:09 PM
It was kind of hinted at in an interview.

I recommend you buy Uncharted ASAP.  I find it to be the best game on the platform so far.

I don't see the difference between the Wii and the last two Nintendo consoles, to be honest.  All anyone cared about on GameCube and N64 were a few select Nintendo-developed games, and then there was a bunch of other stuff that kinda went along for the ride.

Looks like business as usual, to me.  You guys got the big Zelda game at the start, so that means you're likely to have one or two more of those, probably another Mario game, and maybe something else.  Other than that, probably going to be a lot of 3rd party crap to ignore, and an occasional gem now and then.
