The sold half of what they were aiming for in Japan, and the game sold less copies than Shining Tears did in the US.  On the other hand, Shining Force 3 remains their top selling Shining game of all time.  You'd think they'd consider making another strategy/RPG, but hey... let's keep making more action RPGs that sell like crap!

Thinking back, I remember when Wing Commander 2 made its debut with the pricetag of $79.99.  Most people would deem that kind of price for a game as completely unacceptable in this day and age for just a barebones game (you had to buy the speech pack seperate for $29.99, and two mission expansion packs came many months later, each also costing $29.99), but PC gamers paid for it since it was the largest and most ambitious game of its time.  Consider inflation since it was released back in 1991, and you're looking at an extremely expensive game, even for just the core game alone.

As it turns out, you WILL be able to call your chocobo.

Calling Your Chocobo
Calling your chocobo will involve an enchant item, similar to the signal pearl or empress band. With the appropriate item equipped, you will be able to call your trusty mount at any time, in any area where chocobo riding is permitted.
We are planning on setting the enchant recast to a time period that won't adversely affect in-game balance. Rather than making it possible to recall your chocobo immediately after dismounting, it will be necessary to wait for a certain amount of time.

All of which pales in comparison to the quick and convenient transportation options available in competing MMORPGs.

1.  There's a total of 8 "missions" and they're all pretty much cutscenes.  You now can no longer progress any further in Aht Urhgan's story until the next version update.  That's what he's talking about regarding incomplete content in a retail package.

2.  Convenience in regards to mounts is pretty blatant.  You mention chocobos, but you can only access them in towns and crags.  You mention airships, but you have to wait 10 minutes if you just missed one.  You mention outpost warps, but you can only outpost warp to a spot from your hometown.  In other MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, you can ride your mount almost anytime you want.

I enjoy Final Fantasy XI still, but it has a lot of flaws that have never been addressed, and I hope that they address them in their next-gen MMORPG.

How does iinstallling a patch for a console game work?  is it played using emulation software?

Either that, or by burning the patched ISO onto CD and playing it on a modchipped console.

The SSF emulator is the farthest along as far as accurate Saturn emulation goes, and it still has a good while go to.  Sound is around 80% accurate, but there are timing issues with all games that use the Cybersound MIDI wavetable software, which includes a good majority of the best Saturn games, heh.

2324  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / FFXI (Questions for those who play it still) on: May 28, 2006, 01:59:19 PM
Several of us still play Final Fantasy XI, on the Leviathan server.  As far as the UI goes, it's still a PS2 game at heart.  Playing the game with a gamepad on PC is almost mandatory for a fluid experience, at least in my opinion.

As far as partying, invitations are hit and miss depending on the time of day.  One of the biggest problems people had was sitting in town doing nothing while waiting for a party.  Big mistake.  There are things that can be done in between leveling parties.

If you're aiming for melee/mage hybrid, the new Blue Mage class is probably your best choice.  However, you'd need to level up another class to at least 30 and own the new expansion in order to pursue this class.

Regarding billing, if you sign up on the 30th, you'd get billed for 1 day's gametime.

If you finally do decide to get the game, just say the word and we'll get you a worldpass to Leviathan, and probably a linkpearl so you can communicate with us.

There's not a lot of music because this is all from the beta client.

Everything feels larger than PSO, but it's still the same basic mechanics.  Anyone going into the game expecting MMORPG styled persistant worlds is in for a rude awakening.
