2311  The Rest / General Discussions / Penn and Teller: Bullshit! on Abstinence on: August 25, 2006, 02:49:16 PM

Alright, true enough. But honestly, the reason I didn't warny about it was because it was a small segment of the show, and I didn't even consider it when I posted. It wasn't really the point of the show, or of my post, and so it slipped my mind.

I'll concede on that note.

I did restate it because Ramza attacked the show and made it sound like Penn and Teller were to hard on the abstinence movement. I agreed with this, but said that even so that does not diminish the stupidity of their misinformation.

He did no such thing.  He said that he felt they went beyond just villainizing the abstinence movement.  He agreed with the show's core point.

Besides, neither I nor P&T are saying that marriage in itself is an arbitrary line.   Just that it's arbitrary to chose marriage as the point when sex magically becomse good, wholesome and morally correct.

This sounds like a case of (mis)intepretation, due to multiple definitions of the word "arbitrary".  For example, my interpretation of the word usage based on the show's jabs at religion throughout the column, made me think of synonyms such as "unreasonable", rather than "an individual's whim or judgement".  Perhaps you meant the latter, but Penn and Teller made me think of the former.

Besides, I didn't think to warn about it because, frankly, I fail to see why it would be offensive. Not like it was hardcore porn or anything.

Don't play dumb Cauton.  You're most certainly aware of American culture and how things of this nature are generally censored on public television here.  As if a nearly naked woman masturbating is something appropriate for all viewing ages.  Come on now.  And I'm not defending Dade's linking either.

However, that doesn't change the fact that the abstinence movement is spreading misinformation and trying to scare teenages into abstinence.

Ramza already acknowledged the whole misinformation deal.  He's in agreement on that issue, so why you felt the need to remind everyone of it makes one scratch his/her head.

And they called marriage an "arbitrary line" in regards to when one should stop being abstinent. And it *IS* an arbitrary line. How does sex magically become a good thing after marriage, and when it is not before it?

It's an arbitrary line for you perhaps, but believe it or not, there are people on this planet who might actually disagree with this position!  Some people practice this crazy thing on Earth called "religion", and often times they take those things that they're taught to heart.

It is entirely possible to agree with the notion of this abstinence-only program being harmful due to it leaving students completely ignorant of contraceptives, but yet still believe that marriage is important.  For example, I think marriage is important and not some arbitrary line.  This isn't a black-and-white scenario, and it is feasible to agree with some of, but not all of an opinion piece.
2313  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Annual Expansion Releases? on: August 25, 2006, 01:23:21 PM
Except that they wouldn't make as much money if they went about it the way you're wanting them to go.  That's entirely the point of their new direction, and one can't really blame them for wanting to go this route, especially since they've got everyone hooked.
2314  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Phantasy Star Universe stuff. on: August 22, 2006, 02:10:02 PM
Pff, the voice acting is of the same caliber as Xenosaga Episode I, Star Ocean 3, Tales of Symphonia, or any of the other more recent RPG releases.  Sega didn't blow anything off.

Also, the Sonic Team commentary doesn't apply given that the team functions much like Square does, and there are multiple groups of programmers and designers that work on their own respective projects.  PSU's had dedicated development for 3+ years under Takao Miyoshi's lead and has been delayed for over a year purely for the sake of squashing bugs.  That's not the sign of a half-assed project, and what they've put together is pretty damned amazing given the resources that were at their disposal.

It is.  Another chart to look at is this one.
2316  The Rest / General Discussions / Ze Picture Thread on: August 10, 2006, 05:52:47 PM

That's me on the top of the antenna of an airport surveillance radar being assembled.

Side view... guy taking the picture asked me to pose in some fashion and that's what he got.

....and me working on an ECU next to a shelter.  I recall grabbing one of the 2' x 3' duct brackets and flinging it about 20 feet in some random direction a few minutes before this picture was taken, hence my fairly disgruntled expression.  My co-workers always enjoy it when I'm pissed.
2317  The Rest / General Discussions / Phil Harrison will be amazed if the PS4 has a disc drive on: August 08, 2006, 11:09:31 PM
Hey, I heard about this new thing called the internet, and people can publish whatever they want on it!  Books are totally going to be obsolete, I'd be surprised if there were still any print media left by 2004.
2318  The Rest / General Discussions / Flamebait: Girl without a face. on: August 07, 2006, 09:35:41 PM
I mentioned this to my friend JWL over AIM regarding this, but after thinking things over, I realized that she'll probably grow up just fine and overcome in the same fashion that Hellen Keller and Stephen Hawking did.

So yeah, still in the pro-life boat, here.  Kudos to her parents for not being shallow and looking past the outside.
2319  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Phantasy Star Universe to lack keyboard support? on: August 07, 2006, 09:17:53 PM
You're misinterpreting what Gast stated.  Being able to control via keyboard is exclusive to the PC version.  The game has full gamepad support.  Was able to configure buttons however I saw fit on my Xbox pad that I have connected to my PC while I played the beta version of the game.
2320  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Phantasy Star Universe to lack keyboard support? on: August 06, 2006, 06:23:40 PM
Sega is selling a USB keyboard for PlayStation 2 and PC.  Worry not, Sega's not half-assing this game.
2321  The Rest / General Discussions / Flamebait: Girl without a face. on: August 05, 2006, 05:20:10 PM
This is not for the faint of heart.  If you have a weak stomach, don't click.

Something Awful published an article regarding a girl named Juliana Wetmore, a girl who was born without a face.  With that article rekindles the never-ending debate of pro-life versus pro-choice.

I'll be honest here... I've always held pretty firmly to the pro-life deal, with very rare exceptions (is the mother's life at risk?  etc.), but how do you respond to a situation such as this?  As it stands, I'm completely indecisive in this scenario.  Thoughts?
2322  The Rest / General Discussions / Instruction Booklets on: July 31, 2006, 08:23:55 PM
Still plenty of games out there with large manuals.

Don't buy EA products.

Problem solved!
2324  The Rest / General Discussions / Israel to world: Fuck off on: July 17, 2006, 07:53:18 PM
Iran can't get involved.  They aren't exactly going to roll their military through Iraq, and firing Silkworm missiles over Iraqi airspace would be insanity.  We'd have to get involved if it happened, and Iran would have nothing to gain from it.

Not really sure about Syria, on the other hand.  However, if Israel attacks Syria, they wouldn't have too many sympathizers left.
2325  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Shining Force EXA on: July 15, 2006, 03:48:49 PM
The sold half of what they were aiming for in Japan, and the game sold less copies than Shining Tears did in the US.  On the other hand, Shining Force 3 remains their top selling Shining game of all time.  You'd think they'd consider making another strategy/RPG, but hey... let's keep making more action RPGs that sell like crap!
