2296  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Capcom gets up a poll asking about Mega Man's future on: August 27, 2007, 05:23:15 AM

Will someone explain to me how "Mega Man X turned the series in a new direction"? Basically, it was exactly the same as the original games, but with animal robot bosses, and wall jumping. I'm sorry, people these days talk about X as if it was God's gift to games, but when it came out, I kept thinking that it was just "same old, same old".

You want a great post-NES MegaMan game? Try "RockMan & Forte" (effectively MegaMan 9), now THAT game had some actually original stuff in it.

coming from you this is humorous. while rockman and forte is nice its only advantage over megaman 8 is bass/trebble as a playable character.

the X series added 2 more playable characters, zero and axel. i agree with shiguma though X4 was the pinacle of the  X series though i hear X8 is good. unfortunately X7 gives me painful memories of the following phrase. "burn burn burn to the ground"

FFT battles are generally short compared to many other srpg's thats a lame complaint imo

as for me the first time i played:

FFT i didnt like it and got stuck at the thieves fort battle only once i grasped the game mechanics and the job system i loved it.

Dragon Force a similar deal as with FFT

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth while i never disliked the game it wasnt till  my second playthrough that i truely fell in love with the game.

overworlds are over rated and often lead to frustration for me. as for me ill definately be picking this up since im clearly the only person on the planet that doesnt give a damn about bioshock so im pretty bored at the moment.

i used to go to gamespot when it was called videogames.com. i sometimes go to gametrailers.com because i believe seeing a game in action is far better than any review especially considering the only EGM/1up editors i consistantly agree with are che and maybe milkman. also i believe it or not gamefaqs message boards are a great source of information since you will get a lot of hardcore fans posting the latest news. since they post/translate from japaneese sites/magazine scans its info you wouldnt get from most mainstream sites.

im alarmed that pretty much everyones reasons for liking games relates to story and characters(only). perhaps thats why im at a loss for understanding. the way a character is presented in battle can go a long way in my like or dislike of them and most recent ff games the characters have no identity in battle. i think my obsession with battle systems and gamplay comes from shining force 2 being the first rpg i played that i really liked as well as my background with fighting games.
2302  The Rest / General Discussions / What makes a game age well? on: August 14, 2007, 02:44:32 AM
2 main factors i think gameplay and animation quality.

gameplay is the foundation animation quality are the support beams.

if you are unsure what i mean by animation quality compare the character sprites in crono trigger to those in ff6

fanservice only works if you are the target of the fanservice otherwise it comes off annoying.

Luke is probably one of my favorite RPG characters, because he's so distinctly different from the stock archytipical hero. AND because he changes so drastically throughout the game, due to the event in the game and his connections to other characters. I went back and started replaying it, I was so amazed at his transformation, even his voice actor took a distinctly different approach to portraying him, but the transition was so incredibly smooth, I never noticed it. That's one thing that botters me about so-called "CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT" in RPGs, it tends to happen all at once, at one time, and one character goes from being one architype to another, but in TotA Luke's change is much more gradual. Sure, there are a few points (one in particular) that the change is pretty drastic, but it's far from the end of his transformation, and even it takes some time to settle in. Also, the part about killing humans was especially good. "FINALLY" I kept thinking, it's about time an RPG delt with mental stress of having to kill other human beings.

I don't mind annoying characters if they make sense, and if they're well written, and I think Luke's was. He wasn't annoying for the sake of being a foil, it was that he was genuinely clueless, and through that, you get to see him change. I think about Titus in FFX, who I pretty much hate... I guess because his obnoxiousness was used more for comic relief, and it really never resolved.

My only real problems with the game are in the graphical department. Let's face it, TotA is an UGLY ASS GAME. For a late gen PS2 game made by a fairly prominant developer, who's previous outtings were much more polished, TotA was a disgrace. The rendering of the characters was fair at best (Tear's was downright horrid), and the environments were just bad. But none of that compares to the downright horrific graphic design of the whole menu system, extra-gameplay elements. Whoever designed the look & feel for the extra-gameplay elements should be blacklisted from ever working on a video game ever again.

Also, regarding the ending:
Code:
I hated the epilogue. But, the actual ending itself I really liked. ESPECIALLY the "I love you" bit. I'm so sick and tired of unrequited love, simply because the game manufacter's don't have the balls to come out and admit it (I'm looking at you, Grandia II). I screamed for joy when Tear finally comes out and says it, because I was just glad that they had the balls to follow through with what they started. The timing was perfect, and it's dramatic quality was spot on. I'd have been really pissed at they NOT done it.

However, the epilogue was terrible, and boring. Luke must live: that's pretty much a given, especially considering Ash's sacrifice. The fact is, Ash had nothing to live for; no one really cared about him—even Natalia really only cared about him because of his previous self—which he'd abandoned long ago. Luke's journey is all about why he should keep on living. Guy pretty much sums it up after Axereuth when he says, "You need to keep on living to atone for what you've done." But the whole 6 month disappearence (or was it a year), was rediculous. There's no explanation other than purely "dramatic effect". I'd have been much much more interested if they had brought Luke back shortly after the ending, and then done a "6 months later" for all of them. I was especially interested in seeing how Anise would handle the church reconstruction, or possibly Natalia's eventual rise to the throne. "Luke Lives," big deal... we know that, it's what most of the game is about... just say it and let's get on with hearing some of the more personal things that would take place after the game.

unrequited love? you have got to be shitting me? the fact of the matter is that that pair didnt make any sense at all much like Arnaud and Raquel in wild arms 4.
Code:
you know i saw a lot of myself in Tear in fact i think she provided valuable insight as to how others perceive me. wich makes her loving luke even harder for me to swallow.

the more i try to wrap my head around why people like FF7 so much, the more dumbfounded i become. even if someone explains it to me i dont get it. even if explained to me. its like someone saying a hamburger that features only a patty on a bun is awesome because its the first hamburger you ever had O_O
2309  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Top 3 Favourite/Least Favourite Squaresoft RPGs on: August 08, 2007, 01:32:57 AM
in no particular order

Crono Cross
Parasite Eve 1(never played the second one)
Seiken Densetsu 3
Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 with the original being the better game.(any game with a female lead that uses a sword has to try pretty hard to get on my bad side witch FF12 managed to do..)

Worst
DQVIII
chocobos dungeon lol!
2310  Media / Single-Player RPGs / top 3 best/worst Final Fantasy games (no spine-off) on: August 08, 2007, 01:19:40 AM
before i start my list i think i should mention 2 things

1st ive only played FF5-12 and havent finished 5,6 or 12 yet

Best
ff8- <3 quistis. ff8 also has a large contingant of female characters
ff10-best battle system
ff11 if you can trudge through the levels you are rewarded with what is probally the best tale of any FF game.
FF6-even though i havent finished it i am biracial wich i think gives me a deep understanding of Terra's plight, and i connected with her early on.

In the Middle
FF9-it was decent enough but it felt uninspired to me(after playing a little of FF6 i can see how it would make people nostalgic though). had freya been a human or at least human looking like FFXI's elvaan race i think this could have allowed me to like the game more.

FFTA-something i didnt understand is ritz said she didnt want to go back why then did she not try to stand in marche's way? admittedly its been a couple years since i played it so i could be missing something.

FF7-lol this game gets way more praise than it deserves. it was the first FF game i played. i bought it after trying the FF8 demo and thought it was decidely medicore. though after playing FF6 on gba i suppose it seems like a baby step forward.i cannot comprehend people thinking its good. then again too me shining force 2 > FF7

Worst
FF12- the cream of the crap this is what happens when you take FFXI and make a concentrated effort to make it worse
