I guess because his obnoxiousness was used more for comic relief, and it really never resolved.

My only real problems with the game are in the graphical department. Let's face it, TotA is an UGLY ASS GAME. For a late gen PS2 game made by a fairly prominant developer, who's previous outtings were much more polished, TotA was a disgrace. The rendering of the characters was fair at best (Tear's was downright horrid), and the environments were just bad. But none of that compares to the downright horrific graphic design of the whole menu system, extra-gameplay elements. Whoever designed the look & feel for the extra-gameplay elements should be blacklisted from ever working on a video game ever again.

Also, regarding the ending:

I hated the epilogue. But, the actual ending itself I really liked. ESPECIALLY the "I love you" bit. I'm so sick and tired of unrequited love, simply because the game manufacter's don't have the balls to come out and admit it (I'm looking at you, Grandia II). I screamed for joy when Tear finally comes out and says it, because I was just glad that they had the balls to follow through with what they started. The timing was perfect, and it's dramatic quality was spot on. I'd have been really pissed at they NOT done it.

However, the epilogue was terrible, and boring. Luke must live: that's pretty much a given, especially considering Ash's sacrifice. The fact is, Ash had nothing to live for; no one really cared about him—even Natalia really only cared about him because of his previous self—which he'd abandoned long ago. Luke's journey is all about why he should keep on living. Guy pretty much sums it up after Axereuth when he says, "You need to keep on living to atone for what you've done." But the whole 6 month disappearence (or was it a year), was rediculous. There's no explanation other than purely "dramatic effect". I'd have been much much more interested if they had brought Luke back shortly after the ending, and then done a "6 months later" for all of them. I was especially interested in seeing how Anise would handle the church reconstruction, or possibly Natalia's eventual rise to the throne. "Luke Lives," big deal... we know that, it's what most of the game is about... just say it and let's get on with hearing some of the more personal things that would take place after the game.



unrequited love? you have got to be shitting me? the fact of the matter is that that pair didnt make any sense at all much like Arnaud and Raquel in wild arms 4.

you know i saw a lot of myself in Tear in fact i think she provided valuable insight as to how others perceive me. wich makes her loving luke even harder for me to swallow.

the more i try to wrap my head around why people like FF7 so much, the more dumbfounded i become. even if someone explains it to me i dont get it. even if explained to me. its like someone saying a hamburger that features only a patty on a bun is awesome because its the first hamburger you ever had O_O

Crono Cross
Parasite Eve 1(never played the second one)
Seiken Densetsu 3
Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 with the original being the better game.(any game with a female lead that uses a sword has to try pretty hard to get on my bad side witch FF12 managed to do..)

before i start my list i think i should mention 2 things

1st ive only played FF5-12 and havent finished 5,6 or 12 yet

Best
ff8- <3 quistis. ff8 also has a large contingant of female characters
ff10-best battle system
ff11 if you can trudge through the levels you are rewarded with what is probally the best tale of any FF game.
FF6-even though i havent finished it i am biracial wich i think gives me a deep understanding of Terra's plight,and i connected with her early on.

In the Middle
FF9-it was decent enough but it felt uninspired to me(after playing a little of FF6 i can see how it would make people nostalgic though). had freya been a human or at least human looking like FFXI's elvaan race i think this could have allowed me to like the game more.

FFTA-something i didnt understand is ritz said she didnt want to go back why then did she not try to stand in marche's way? admittedly its been a couple years since i played it so i could be missing something.

FF7-lol this game gets way more praise than it deserves. it was the first FF game i played. i bought it after trying the FF8 demo and thought it was decidely medicore. though after playing FF6 on gba i suppose it seems like a baby step forward.i cannot comprehend people thinking its good. then again too me shining force 2 > FF7

FF12- the cream of the crap this is what happens when you take FFXI and make a concentrated effort to make it worse

Luke's definitely a YMMV character, and personally I liked him from beginning to end.  His first persona is hard for people to appreciate simply because he's definitely not a typical hero, especially by Tales standards, where every hero in the "main" series released in the U.S. (at least with the exception of Symphonia, which I haven't played and probably won't since I have neither a GC nor a Wii nor have much interest in a Wii at the moment) has been pretty much a spunky go getter.  Offhand I can't recall a similar "hero" such as Luke v.1 in any JRPG - as close as they get is Yuri From SH/SH:C, and that's really not very close.

Luke v.2 is very interesting as well, though a bit too close to the typical Tales heroes for my taste in terms of personality.  His seemingly nihilistic attitude towards life that becomes pretty much the main point of the second half of the game, on the other hand, I found very touching.  It isn't being so much an angst-filled hero so much as it's his own logical conclusion - as he says at one point of the game, it's not that he wants to die but that if through his death he can save a great many people (including the "real" Luke), that was a sacrifice he was willing to make.  This nearly absolute willingness for self-sacrifice is a subject often glanced over (if even discussed) in many RPGs, so I found it wonderfully refreshing.

Having said that, the epilogue per se of the ending was a complete and utter disappointment and a complete reversal of everything up until that point.  When finality is so stressed throughout the second half of the game, it's somewhat silly that Luke comes back like nothing ever happened.

as for me i still play ffxi i have monk and bluemage at 75. i think the main reason i stayed with it as opposed to say WoW is that i find it more aesthetically pleasing plus in wow i doubt i could punch and kick things to death without being a gimp rouge. i'm sorta looking forward to WotG but not much has been revealed yet.

just finished the game and am starting my second playthrough. not since XS3 has a protagonist managed to piss me off so much.

skits annoyed the hell out of me so i eventually turned them off.....it boggles my mind why you cant press X to advance them. i cant put my finger on why but they never annoyed me half as much in tales of symphonia. i had some other minor gameplay related annoyances as well(such as how long it takes to rotate yourself on the world map)but those come from constantly holding the game up against ToS. despite all that the game's combat is fun and rewarding plus theres a bit of second playthrough goodies.

the problem with this logic is that as a group caucasians have never been oppressed. i could call someone a cracker and they probally wouldnt react but if someone calls me GENIAL MEMBER OF ETHNIC GROUPS THAT ORIGINATE IN THE AFRICAN CONTINENT OR CLOSEBY THEREIN with malicious intent its like a bull seeing red.

as i understand it TP has better story at the expense of moving the gameplay forward. i did however like the segments where you play as the wolf.
