some of you might cringe when you see a certain something in star ocean 1. not gonna outright spoil it since some of you seem interested in the remake. i played the dejap translation a couple years ago.
2417  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Who´s getting Final fantasy tactics: the lion war??? on: September 10, 2007, 02:59:24 AM
if it was for ps2 instead of psp i'd be more interested. that and the fact that i've beaten FFT on psx about 10 times. also as far as balthier is concerned i was under the impression that the FFT ivalaice is not the same as the FFXII ivalice. unless its in the future and bangaa and seeq and viera are extinct, but then you have the problem of explaining the differences in the summons.

My only real problem with SO3's battle system, is how you could run around like the dickens (at least Fate, could, anyway), but when you finally got down to swinging your sword, it was slow.

I'd swear that the animations of your attacks were done in slow motion.

For that matter, an enemy could step a millimeter away from you during your sword stroke, and it'd miss.

For that matter, quick/weak attacks were pointless when enemies always used guard/barrier; you'd need a slow/strong attack to hit them without getting paralyzed all the time.

What I hope they improve in the sequel, is to make the battle system more reminiscent of that of a hack n' slash game.

I'd still like enemy encounters, and encounter them in real-time like you did in SO3, but once you're in battle, I want to be able to jump and execute combos, and all sorts of shit like that, like you do in games like Devil May Cry or Chaos Legion. They only variation they ought to do is to make combat faster than it is in DMC/CL, or hack n' slash games in general.

I never got any of those combo special attacks that they showed in the SO3 gameplay demo footage; my guess is that they weren't even included in the final game.

To be honest with you, I'm not so fond of traditional RPGs as I am of hack n' slash games; I'm really losing interest in menu-based fare.

your entire post shows me that you had little understanding of the SO3 battle system. hard attacks are meant to lower an enemies guard so that you can set up link attacks with the soft attack. link attacks are important because the damage gets progressively higher during links capping out at 300% damage. and again the AI in SO3 was only stupid if you didnt raise attack or defense. i expect in star ocean 4 your allies will ask to use healing items like they do in rouge galaxy and tales of the abyss. since in SO3 if a character got low on hp they wouldnt attack and would avoid enemies and if they had a healing spell they would use it on anyone who is low. much like VP the SO3 battle system was very methodical.

i honestly could care less if the plot is medicore as long as i get to kick ass in style and am treated to yet more wondeful endgame dungeons and content. i hope they adopt the tales series exhibition matches. i would love to kick the crap out of jack russel. id also be curious to know wich SO3 ending was cannon. i never got the fayt/nel ending but i liked the fayt/maria ending sophia can go die in a fire.

i felt grandia 2 was pretty tame compared to tales of the abyss if you were to say that the score is a metaphor for the bible. that however is besides the point because clearly no gamers are athiest and might actually like rpg's that assault religeon.

i also didnt care for fable being on that list because of what it implies.
2421  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Star Ocean 4 on: September 07, 2007, 10:18:41 AM
dont cry to much. every star ocean game ive played(all of them except the gameboy color one)have some kind of retro planet. from what i can see in the scans the female character looks like a sophia archetype.... wich would be fail. i'm hoping they bring back battle trophies.

2423  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Is the localization better in Tales of Abyss? on: September 06, 2007, 10:11:11 AM
im pretty sure the localization for tales of symphonia was done by nintendo. i assume that why the ps2 version was never released here.

I'd like to think I'm half-decent at videogames, and I've had the same thing happen to me in Wild Arms 3..

Yeah, but you're not Alisa, so I don't really feel any compulsion to rag on you.

Anyway though, a lot of games are balanced so that dungeons are really an act of planning and survival, this sort of, uh, requires the 'planning' aspect to be present. Not letting you buy items would apparently take this out. This is a fact Alisa failed to mention, so that post mostly came off as, "Waah! I don't want a game where I could LOSE!"

i dont mind losing unless theres no technique to it. to give an example of what i mean. say i wipe in pokemon. more often than not its not because i ran out of potions. i can revise my strategy and try again. however in a game like DQVIII if i died it was always because i either ran out of resources or was underleveled. how dare you accuse me of not wanting something to be hard. i play tales of the abyss on unknown after all. i just want there to be a method to the madness. paper scisors rock is the greatest game ever created.

The game is also pretty tough too.  Its kidna comforting knowing normal enemies can potentially be dangerous.

what exactly do you mean by this? if normal enemies can wreck you it often leads to me running away from battles because im afraid of running out of resources.
2426  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Capcom gets up a poll asking about Mega Man's future on: September 01, 2007, 02:10:09 AM
i liked megaman network transmission on gamecube wich combined elements from past megaman games and battle network. it still has the card setup and takes place in the battle network world but at its heart is a side scrolling megaman game.

So you guys didn't cry when
Zero died in MMX?

Should I have even bothered to code that?

Seriously, though, MMX is the only one I've played all the way through. I tried to get into the older ones but couldn't, which is kinda weird since, as PM pointed out, they ARE more or less identical.

I'm actually somewhat interested in Star Force, though.

dude zero must of died 2-3 times by now.

2430  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Top 3 most difficult RPG's on: August 30, 2007, 02:39:10 AM
saying VP2 is hard is like saying playing the clarinet is hard when you havent taken the time to learn it. relatively early in the game it brutally punishes anyone who button mashes, and you cant disable the function that causes that. the punishment is in fact a reward for players that correctly time attacks.

FFX isnt hard BUT the monster arena is. i recall a monster that petrified my guys under water when they had stoneproof, and in FFX any character petrified under water instantly is removed from the battle.

heres my list.
Tales of the Abyss on v-hard and unknown
enemies on unknown have around X4 to base stats on unknown. the liger queen took me about 40 minutes of chiping away before jade showed up.

FFXII some of the bosses are total BS seriopusly they were reminding me of HNM's in FFXI

DQVIII-i found the combat system pretty unforgiving and because of the way the game chips away at your resources i started overcompensating wich ultimately made things worse.

Fire Emblem Sealed Sword-this is the one with Roy and its absolutely brutal if you play for no deaths. there was a battle were i was beseiged by wyvern knights and i still havent managed to win that battle without any casualties. even with archers my archers cant kill them all fast enough.its also the home of bullshit like a boss sitting on a castle with a brave sword and a brave bow.

growlanser generations-its been a while so i dont recall exactly what the factor was but i recall both games being difficult.
