2416  Media / Single-Player RPGs / suikoden V does it get better? on: April 21, 2007, 05:10:38 AM
you guys got the wrong idea(and for good reason i might add) i dont think the game is horrible or anything. it just lacks that "i can't wait to see what happens next" feeling. that in essence is probally why i didnt like ffxii. i wanted to see what was gonna happen next but the gameplay kept blocking me from seeing it.
2417  Media / Single-Player RPGs / suikoden V does it get better? on: April 20, 2007, 06:33:21 AM
right now in suikoden V im at the part where you get your base and im finding myself incredibly bored with the game. of course it doesnt help that the graphics look worse than Suikoden 4's. it almost looks like this game was made inbetween suikoden 3 and 4. so if im bored now is anything gonna change to make the game more enjoyable in the future?

Yeah, FFX was a big letdown for me. I actually started playing RPGs (and video games), during college because of it. I'd been watching my friend play FFX when it first came out... I'd watched him play FF8 and FF9 as well, but I hadn't been in a place in my life where I could really play games. Seeing FFX was the last straw though. I downloaded FF6, loved it, then got FF8 for the PC (loved it even more), FF7, and then went on from there. It wasn't until almost two years later, though, that I actually bought a PS2 and played FFX... and I was quite dissapointed with what I finally saw. Before that, I had been playing the previous games because they were the only ones I could play on the equipment I had. It taught me a good lesson about how newer, and better hardware didn't always make the better game.

Don't get me wrong, in the grand scheme of things, FFX is a fine game... I just had higher hopes for it than what it delivered. I was expecting it to be one of the best in a series of incredible games, when it was only a "good game", I was pretty put off.

i realize this thread is about story but that doesnt change the fact that FFX is easily the best game in the main series on the merits of the battle system alone. but im gonna stop at that because this is probally a discussion best left for another thread.
2419  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Best RPGs based on story alone? on: April 17, 2007, 01:46:14 AM
when it comes to story id probally reccomend any game/series with linked games especially if they have returning characters. the exception to this rule is XS2

SRT OG/OG2  <--yes i'm a biased fangirl but i loved reuniting with all the characters i loved in the first game.

phantasy star 1,2,4

arc the lad 1 and 2

xenosaga 1 and 3
2420  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Final Fantasy 3 has all the charm that so many RPGs miss on: April 17, 2007, 01:26:30 AM
the problem with rpg's being challanging is that because most rpg's are turn based a challange usually equates to enemies being cheap. like in one of the lunar games didnt ghaleon steal all your characters mp? or was that zophar? thats why i think action rpg's are better if you want to challange the player since you are less likely to feel out of control and can use skill instead of stats to overcome obstacles
2421  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Can* English Voice Acting ruins Characters in RPGs? on: April 16, 2007, 01:50:10 AM
isnt part of the problem having to sync lips and such? ever notice how eastern rpgs and rpgs where dialauge is handled via text boxes is almost always decent?
im kinda scared what OGS will sound like if it comes out here because of some of the silly lines that would have to be uttered for attacks.

If by "charm" you mean "outdated game mechanics that would have been doomed to oblivion years ago were it not for the tendency of older gamers to look back on the games of yore through rose-colored glasses and lament the long-gone days of monotonous level grinding to artificially inflate playing time through sheer repetition", then I guess it has charm out the fucking ass.

thanks for stating what i wanted to but couldnt quite put into words. when rpg's started healing at save points they basically are saving you the trouble of using tents or whatever. i think thats one of the reasons i hated DQ8 since basically the only way you could fight a boss fresh was too warp back to town heal up then run from every encounter till you get back to the boss.

thanks i think i'll stay away from ff3 now. what you described is what i like to call artificial difficulty. developers instead need to come up with innovate ways to make games challanging instead of cheap tricks.

Any RPG that utilizes a card battling system is frustrating for me as well.  I'd like to rely on skill rather than luck of the draw, thank you.

.

uh sure some luck is involved but deck building is a skill.

sorry nothing compares to fire emblem. nothing like a character you like getting 1 shotted by a boss or unit that traveled its maximum range to hit you and forcing you to restart the whole map if you want to keep that character. the super robot wars games can be bad sometimes to thanks to the enemies fucking hax accuracy.

Me:WTF they had a 15% chance to hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*throws gamecube controller at the wall*

Me:WTF trump card missed with an 80% chance?
*slams fist into pillow*

when was the last time nintendo created a new franchise that can appeal to those that like zelda metroid and starfox?

The "Brain" franchise?  Big Brain/Brain Age have sold insanely well, and hold appeal with the casual as much as they do with the hardcore.

Nintendogs?  Same deal.  Animal Crossing, to a lesser extent.

All of those titles have hit the million+ plateau.

the games you just mentioned are exactly the threat i speak of. the first time i played metroid prime i played it for 4 hours straight but games like brain age and nintendogs cant even keep me entertained for an hour. my concern is that if nintendo becomes number #1 via these types of games more traditional game types will start to be phased out in favor of those that appeal more to casual types. ive already seen the copy whats successful effect generated by GTA whats to stop that from happening here?

with the mini cd's i wasnt refering to the cost but nintendos control over them. and the failure to grow up with its audience... when was the last time nintendo created a new franchise that can appeal to those that like zelda metroid and starfox? as i said before i hope nintendo fails because it represents a threat.

im suprised they didnt mention gamecubes mini cd's since the concept there was probally the same as with cartidges. they also should of added nintendos utter and complete failure to grow up with its audience.
2430  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Why not: all time favourite RPG on: April 10, 2007, 11:45:31 PM
until recently it was valkyrie profile lenneth-psone version however it has recently been overthrown by super robot taisen OG2. 2d orgasms all over the screen and i just love the feeling that many of the characters are actually friends. too often in rpg's the party members just seem like aquantences(sp?) that will go thier sperate ways after the journey.
