2641  Media / Single-Player RPGs / PC/Console separation needs to exist... on: June 12, 2007, 04:43:43 AM
Take a series of threads that arrose on Nintendo's absolutely idiotic forum regarding Metroid Prime 3. Suddenly, you see "fans" who are claiming that they'll boycott the game unless they get full online multi-player. My reaction is that, if you're asking for multi-player Metroid/Zelda/Final Fantasy, etc, you're really missing the point. 3 years ago, you'd never have seen this.

i guess thats why Final Fantasy XI recently had its 5 year anniversery. i personally think online multiplayer in games like metroid could be great. because online multiplayer and pvp can be two completely different things. in fact the possibilities there are blowing my mind right now.
2642  Media / Single-Player RPGs / The Very Saddest games... on: June 10, 2007, 11:15:17 PM
Celes attempted suicide lost a lot of its luster because of the presentation. also by that point in the game i much more closely identified with Terra,so even if she succeeded it wouldn't of meant much to me. also i dont know if this counts as a sad moment but there was a moment in arc the lad twilight of spirits where:
the game makes you chose between kharg and darc and i thought the one you didnt chose was gonna die and it was a hard choice to make

super robot taisen OG2
when captain daitetsu dies

grandia 2
when mareg dies... omg

Rouge Galaxy
theres a moment where lilika has to see her past and she is blaming herself for her moms death. im not quite sure why it brought a tear to my eye but it did
2644  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Wild Arms series on: June 09, 2007, 06:48:35 PM
im a huge fan of the wild arms series. i got my introduction with WA3 and havent played 1 or 2 yet(but i hear anastasia is awesome) but one of the things i like about the WA series is the role reversal both WA 3 and 4 have females in a position of leadership. and in WA3 i never would of expected a big buff indian dude with a shotgun to be the party's best mage :D
WA5 is curently my most anticipated rpg since i loved the WA4 battle system.  doesn't that come out in july or something?
2645  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Suikoden General topic on: June 09, 2007, 12:10:06 AM
in my opinion suikoden is pretty medicore. i've only played 3,4,and 5 and out of those i only finished suikoden 4 and it was the one i enjoyed most. 3 and 5 lost my interest before the end but 3 kept my interest longer. however i get the feeling i would of enjoyed suikoden 5 more had i played 1 and 2. another thing about suikoden 5. its not that the graphics are bad but when the same company puts out stuff like metal gear solid and zone of enders is kinda disapointing.

just for reference:

i lost interest in suikoden 3 when
the three characters meet up to fight a red dragon or somethin

i lost interest in suikoden 5 when
lyon get injured and you have to unlock the full power of the dawn rune
2646  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Japanese RPGs you've spent the most time on? on: June 07, 2007, 03:53:49 PM
i dont know the exact time but in recent memory:

super robot taisen Original Generations 2 - 2 complete playthroughs to see all the branching paths and unlock all the secrets

Super Robot Taisen Judgement - just finished my first playthrough and for similar reasons as OG2 i will playing through the game a total of 4 times then i will get to Super Robot Taisen W for DS. SRT J clocks in at 52 chapters >_>

Valyrie Profile 2 - dual playthroughs + multiple seraphic hate completions to get angel slayer.

Radiata Stories - all characters recruited in my book.

Star Ocean 3 - tried to get all battle trophies but gave up after i unlocked sound test

Rouge Galaxy - unlocking all constumes takes some serious time :o
2647  The Rest / General Discussions / Where did the effeminate male look come from in Japan? on: June 06, 2007, 06:35:17 AM
i always thought it was an attempt to appeal to females. i mean i dont think ive ever seen a buff male in shoujo media.
2648  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Valkyrie Profile 2 on: June 05, 2007, 07:55:02 PM
i cant beleive people had trouble with that boss i beat both forms on the first go around. also it is NOT a grinder. if you think its a grinder you clearly dont understand how to play the game right. equipment and equiped skills are far more important than levels. even then fairly early in the game you can get a orb/sphere?(i forgot what they are called) that gives X2 exp.

its hard for me to give an idea because i beat the game then did the serpahic gate and completed it multiple times. i could probally beat the game now in 20-30 hours but thats with a firm grasp of the mechanics.

oh yes i <3 hrist :D

It is now time for the fun, happy question and answer about Valkyrie Profile 2!

-How many hours of gameplay and dialogue scene should I set aside time for it?

-Is all town/dungeon movement side-scrolling based?

-How much do I need to understand the plot from the original Valkyrie Profile  to understand what's going on in this game?

1.it depends how well you understand the gameplay system, also skiping the  optional dungeons is highly ill advised

2.yes and it owns

3. eusis theres more to it than that theres a 2 skipable dungeons and the best ending from vp1 are integral to the story
2650  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Is anyone else just plain tired of Tetsuya Nomura? on: June 01, 2007, 10:05:38 AM
i might be shot for this but nomura > amano
2651  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Xenosaga 2 - Why all the hate? on: June 01, 2007, 10:03:30 AM
its all because of the battle system. a huge problem though was that you had no way of knowing wich zone an attack would hit without trial and error. i also disliked the fact that swaping party members mid battle cost you a turn. lastly i hated that you had to do minigames to get the co-op attacks.
2652  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Combat Engines: Menu Based Versus Direct Input on: May 17, 2007, 12:33:59 AM
i like any battle system where i get to strategically plan my moves, and am able to adapt and adjust on the fly. to give an example i'll use ffx's battle system. lets take a Zu. they are fairly powerful but vulnurable to blind however if you encounter one that happens to be vulurable to blind you are not out of options. you can use lulu's focus ability or use sentinel with auron and buff up his defense with protect and such. however presented with that same situation in ffxii i believe you would just have to bend over and take it.

some of my favorite battle systems from this generation of games include:
Valkyrie Profile 2
Wild Arms 4
Rouge Galaxy(i wish the mechanic of making platforms on bosses was used more)
super robot taisen(OG,OG2,J,W)
(note:i have not played grandia 3)
usually when there is something in battle system i dont like its a limitation placed on players. examples:
FFXII:espers send away 2 of your party members but are not strong enough to justify that. quickenings deplete your mp bar when mp is your lifeblood.

Valkyrie Profile 2:dashing depletes your stamina bar wich you also need to attack
2653  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Phantasy Star III Defies All Logics on: May 17, 2007, 12:07:08 AM
in my opinion PSIV trumps many current gen rpg's. i even once called it better than DQ8. and whats with these people lately critiqing rpg's based on stuff like writting style? gameplay>music>story
2654  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Well that's surprising.. on: May 13, 2007, 07:33:48 AM
as someone who just recently returned to the game im psyched. and lately ive been seeing many people who quit return to the game.
2655  Media / Single-Player RPGs / FFXII what do you think about it? on: May 13, 2007, 07:27:36 AM
had i never played ffxi i might not of hated it so much. its a shame too because when i stopped the story was starting to get interesting. in a nutshell ffxii's battle system seemed like a nerfed version of ffxi's and i was consistantly frustrated with the difficulty wich lead to me not seeing the story as fast as i would like. however that could be due to a failure on my part to embrace the gambit system and poor decisions made by me on the license board early in the game that i never recovered from.
