thinking back on this today i realized all my quaims with this game can all be traced back to various boss battles, because i was fine with the game till you hit some of those boss battles.

Hard boss battles + skill-less battle system = fail.

Whether or not you enjoyed the game, the fact of the matter still is that FFXII was accepted by the majority as a great game.  As I've said myself, the storyline and character development is a bit lacking, but it's by no means horrible.  On top of that, the fun gameplay makes up for it.  I've heard a few people complain about how FFXII "plays itself", but I think that is a really flawed argument.  I don't think it's the best FF or even one of the top 3, but it's still one of the best RPGs to come out in all of 2k6.

actually i would lump ffxi with xenosaga 2. two games i couldnt continue to play because the battle systems were horrible/boring/unrewarding. it honestly baffles me why they didnt just use the job system for this game. then again if they did that they would have to rebalance the game since if everyone in your party doesnt have curaja at the point i was at your party wont last long against bosses, looking back i was probally dying because i wasnt actively curing party members with my controlled character. and this game is very unrewarding in terms of what you get for exploring and doing marks. roughly half the license board is wothless. *points at the techniks* i never thought id see the day id be calling an online rpg better than an offline one,but ffxi shits all over ffxii.

Wow, such hostility. I didn't realize so many folks had such issues with the game.
The nice thing, i've found, about this game, is that you can choose not to do things that you don't like or are confused by.
I have obtained only two summons in the course of the game so far(I have played for over 60 hours and am in the Salikawood) I think I used the fire dude once.
I have used quickenings only a few times.
I rarely, if ever, use teleport stones to go anywhere. This results in my characters leveling up fairly well, and obtaining enough loot to sell for Gil. I have no complaints here.
The only time I have used teleport stones is when doing hunts, which I find fun, and a good way to build up your characters inbetween following the story.
I am NOT playing the game for the story. I honestly have no clue what is going in the story, and don't really care. I DO like the characters, and want to know what is going to happen to them.
The license board is kinda stupid, but it is a minor complaint surrounded by a lot of good.
I actually like the gambit system quite a bit. I also rather enjoy the battle system. After this game I will be dreadfully bored with any game heralding a "traditional" rpg setup.
I agree with DC about the music. While I would not listen to it outside of the game, it fits very well within the context of the game itself.
I know Alisha enjoys her online gaming, but I don't understand why she is comparing those games to an offline game.
Personally, I have yet tp play an online rpg, and hope to keep it that way.

the reason i compared ffxii to ffxi is because it seemingly uses the same engine yet manages to completly destroy things that ffxi did well or at least better than ffxii. even though one game is offline and one game is online a lot of stuff felt like a step backwards.

mist knack chains = weapon skills + skillchains except in ffxi they cost a tp bar instead of your mp bar.

im also a staunch hater of god characters syndrome. say what you want in this game 1 character alone cannot keep the party healed and alive.

3 character battles are stupid and archaic. also i think think this is the first rpg ive played in a long time where characters not in the active party DO NOT recieve any exp.

ffxii is the most over rated sack of shit ive ever played. i dare say its the worst Final fanatasy game i've ever played, and i've played 7-12 both tactics and ff5. thats right folks its worse than FFX-2. i find it amusing how they managed to take a somewhat fun game (ffxi had its moments) and COMPLETELY destroy its battle system. the summons are horrible. honestly i found the best use for them is to summon a tier 1 summon and syphon its mp until you have 3 mist charges. the only cool thing about them is that they are mostly from final fanatasy tactics and tactics advance. Totema's from tactics advance and zodiac braves from tactics. the liscence board is stupid FFX international's version of the sphere grid was better. i can deal with needing to spend points to get access to new weapons, armor and magic/skills but accessories? come on now. another problem with this game is it indirectly punishes you for not exlporing or doing sidequests. if you just go from point A to point B without at least exploring you will find yourself quickly underleveled. i tried to force myself through it for the story but i couldnt do it anymore. when i was stopped i just died at some zombie dragon at a lighthouse.

-rant over now excuse me while i play rouge galaxy an rpg thats actually fun.
2676  The Rest / General Discussions / NPD numbers for February. on: March 17, 2007, 11:38:12 PM
it might begin before then never underestimate the power of gundam and the musou series in japan.

quoting a coments from that site because its totally true most people i know with wii's havent onwed a console since the nes or snes.

Hardcore gamers seem to be wondering why people are buying up the wii when there are no games. It's simple it appeals to casual people who will only buy 2-3 games during the ENTIRE LIFE of the console. These people don't buy games every month or even every other month. ...

sure if you consider a girl thats been playing games since the nes days NOT a hardcore gamer. in my opinion a game without violence is incredibly boring(as an example it would take me about 5 minutes to get bored of tetris unless im playing against someone). but i guess it kinda depends on your definition of violence,i mean even a game like mario party has violence. however if your talking about the type of violence that appears in games like GTA then yeah i agree with you there.

wow the comments about that keynote were more entertaining than the actual keynote. i'd like to ask miyamoto if he even cares that nintendos new direction is alienating people.
2682  The Rest / General Discussions / Spore developer thinks Wii "is a piece of shit." on: March 09, 2007, 07:16:38 AM
while i was looking for it i stumbled upon this:

if theres any truth to that nintendo clearly doesnt learn from its mistakes.
2683  The Rest / General Discussions / Spore developer thinks Wii "is a piece of shit." on: March 09, 2007, 07:00:49 AM
on my local news they said that the nintendo guru at the gdc(miyamoto im assuming)said that they need to make more happy games that can appeal to more people. and something about violence giving games a bad repuatation. and that would be the final nail in the coffin.

*goes to look for a more credible source than her local news*
2684  The Rest / General Discussions / Spore developer thinks Wii "is a piece of shit." on: March 08, 2007, 08:37:59 AM
i think of the xenosaga series more as being interactive novels than videogames. those games give you the impression that they were far more interested in telling a story than presenting a fun experience. all they had to do is plagerize ffx's battle system and character battles would of been fun. because it almost seems like they didnt want battles to be fun to the point where people start skipping the story to battle more.

now about Fun. i think thats a very objective term. i think FPS are retarded because you get no sence of acomplishment that you can build on the next time you play. yet many people enjoy FPS greatly. obviously they must or x-box would of tanked long ago. own and enjoyed my gamecube but i detest the wii. to me it just seems like nintendo is saying to sony and microsoft. here you can have all these hardcore gamers we are gonna dip into the casual gamer crowd. we will even help you out by repelling the hardcore crowd. i've believed this ever since i heard an interview where nintendo said some people are intimidated by a controller but nobody is intimidated by a vcr remote. if nintendo really wanted to try why arent they handeling stuff like starfox and f-zero in house, and why dont they try to invent new franchises that can appeal to people that like metroid zelda and starfox but maybee ceased to care about mario long ago.
2685  Media / Single-Player RPGs / 1up: GDC Liveblog on the Evolution of the RPG. on: March 07, 2007, 06:03:32 AM
seems 1up is down keeps timing out for me maybee ill try again tomarrow.

edit:scratch that it loaded now. ill ammend my post after i read it :o

edit2:ok i thought it was stupid do these guys even play their own games? they seem kinda clueless. a real life rpg would be boring because it would be hard to keep the player entertained. you cant exactly fight bullys every 10 steps.i think some of the posters here have better ideas on how to make good rpg's than these guys.
