2672  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Radiata Stories on: September 27, 2006, 03:15:49 AM
im currently finishing up my third playthrough. i need 1 one more playthrough on each side to recruit every character because i made a mistake on my current non-human game. i'd highly recommend going human path on the first playthrough since human path is like easy mode.

I just remember the combat in PSO having some... vague comboish system where you could time your hits and get up to 3-5 consecutive blows, weapon depending. It was mostly button mashing. Even at relatively low levels it didn't seem either actiony or difficult. Just... slow and easy.

Also, my game collection has 600 odd games going back to 1981. And in general I use save states on pretty much any emulatable game that doesn't have a save anywhere feature or a savepoint every twenty minutes or so (Or in action games, basically after every level). I think Wizardry 1 is the only game with longish dungeons that you can't save in that I play semi0regularly but uhhhh. They're big but you can traverse them quickly if you know where to go.

if you button mash in pso all you will do is keep repeating the first combo hit. you cant combo button mashing. for the record i never did get bored of pso's actual combat.

the swoop minigame on kotor was annoying to me because i was playing on pc.

in reference to forgetting wich way i was going after a battle. this only happens to me in rpg's that grant you a bonus for touching the enemy from a certain angle.

PSO was boring not because of a lack of story but because of multi-hour dungeons that you can't SAVE in, along with lameish combat. Was this fixed at all?

i lawl'ed

I find that on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd only give SO3 a 7 or 8. It's decent, but a lot of games have done much, much better. Radiata Stories definitely looks better both from a technical and artistic viewpoint, for example. I do agree that awesome 2D is always desired, and I wish more developers would do it. But it's not like we have blocky messes that are far away from looking remotely realistic.

as much as i love radiata stories(hello being able to recruit lenneth owns your face, plus jack is my favorite male charachter in an rpg since ryudo) in terms of gameplay it's probally tri-ace's worst game yet.though admitedly i havent played star ocean 1,maybee it will show up on virtual console translated? the amount of times i got 1 shooted in the game must be against the law somehwere.

moving on...

some things i hate

rpg's with only 4 characters that you virtually start the game with.

what ever happened to secret characters?

games that force you to lose characters for half the game in the name of story-worst offender ff9.

when you get into a battle then when the battle's over you forgot wich way you were going.

traditional rpg's that dont have some form of limit break, overdrive etc. bore me. lol ffx-2...

companies that make games with the word shining in the title but there no strategy in sight

rpg's that use artificial means of increasing the difficulty such is the case in dragon quest 8 having no revival items, and when you finally get revival spells they have a % chance of working.

why are characters always standing still in battle? the horseback battles in wild arms 3 were freakin sweet!

more rpg's need team up attacks. these first appeared in chrono trigger yet to this day they dont appear much in rpg's.

difficulty levels with perks-valkyrie profile gave you incentive to play on higher difficulties in the form of characters items and an ending. i want to see more of this.
2680  Media / Single-Player RPGs / New Tri-Ace RPG, Infinite Undiscovery on: September 16, 2006, 12:04:18 AM
i can echo what just about everyone else said
tri ace = yes
xbox360 = no

the funny thing is if the psu 360 servers werent segregated i might be singing a different tune.

if i recall mtv owns gametrailers.com so take the numerical score with a grain of salt. as a hardcore fan of the original game a few things disapoint me but much like chrono cross it's still a good game.
2682  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Serious defect in XS3 on: September 05, 2006, 08:29:44 AM
this is the bane of many story driven rpg's its near impossible to strike a balance between gameplay and storytelling without sacrificing one or the other.
