1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake (updates in the 1st post) on: June 19, 2015, 03:38:40 AM
I think Midgar looks absolutely spectacular in that trailer.  It actually looks like a metropolis millions of people live and work in.

As for divergences from the source material being discussed, I think it's pretty clear there will be significant changes.  For instance, the original art style was strongly influenced by manga and anime as none of the characters had realistic designs.  All characters had anime eyes and Cloud had spiky hair that can only exist in a cartoon setting.  Based on the announcement trailer, all of the characters have been redesigned to resemble actual people, so that is one major divergence there.  I think that alone could very well have other knock on effects based on the art design alone.

When I learned that the game was being remade, I fucking squeed.  I can't wait to see what they do with this re-imagined title.  The one depressing fact about this remake, is that this thread made me realize how long ago the original came out.  It's been nearly 20 years since the original's release.  I was a teenager when I played it.  By the remakes comes out, my 40's birthday won't be to far along in coming. ;_;

One thing I would hope for is a greater exploration of Jenova and the Ancients.  Considering how pivotal Aerith and her people were, I think the game should explore them further.  Personally, I would actually prefer the story not be a simple rehash of the original game.  The big thing I am concerned about is the voice acting.  Considering this is a remake and will be coming out now, there is no way they'd be able release this game without voice actors playing the principal characters.  That means the story could very well live and die by the quality of the acting and its voice director.  Moreover, considering the amount of money that is undoubtedly being invested into this game, I don't think they'd be able to get away with subtitles.

On the issue of random battles; I think they should be eliminated in their entirety.  All enemies should be visible on the field map (and hopefully overworld map) and avoidable.  Actually, on second thought, I think there should be varying degrees of aggressiveness on the part of the monsters depending on its type as well as overall party level.

The Euro is strong against the US Dollar, so the Euro should be even stronger against the Yen.  I currently takes about 146 yen to purchase one Euro.  How that would affect the price of an imported Playstation 4 is a whole other question as I think most Eurozone countries have an import VAT.  Depending on how it's calculated European games may be better off purchasing domestic Playstation 4 units.

While Kevadu makes sense of what I said it was announced that FF Agito is also coming as a free-to-download application.
This game is almost certainly going to go with the micro transaction model.  There's no way you're going to be able to have the full experience without forking over some dough.

It looks a little too cute for my taste.

I highly doubt that, unfortunately.  If they did go the 2D route, they'd probably do it in a big way.  I could definitely see something that would be considered a work of art visually.
7  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Phantasy Star Nova (developed by Tri-Ace) on: June 12, 2014, 11:37:17 PM
Phantasy Star was my first RPG.  It is because of that game that I became an ardent fan of the genre to begin with.  It's a shame to see it fade into obscurity in the West.

I am still in chapter three so I've been skimming thread posts here.  Just recently, I acquired my first street pass hit while going to work last night.  I thought awesome when the screen popped up showing it happen.  It made me wonder if it has to come from another player playing the same game.

I'm not really a fan of open world games or Western RPG's, so I won't be funding it.  I do hope it turns out to be success, though, if only convince publishers that there are other genres of games that can be profitable.

I just added you.  If anyone wants to add me, my code is 0645-6505-4522.  I go by MonCappy on Nintendo.

I tried fighting beelzebub lvl10.....that is not a level 10 fight!

Goddamn it, when my level can't kill an enemy of the same level, i don't know what to do with these "levels" anymore....

BRAVERS.  FRIEND CODE.  RAAAH NOW. DO-EET.

I couldn't beat Beelzebub until I was around level 15.  He kept kicking my ass with his acid breath attack.  Even after leveling up that high, the fight was no picnic.

P.S.  I added Dice, Cyril and Klutz to my friends list.  Reciprocation would be highly appreciated.

Please add me too? 1005-8832-7182
Done.

True true.  It seems like it's marketing itself to the likes of Dust and stuff like that; the indie darling with the great production values.  If it turns out to be Dust meets Grandia for a good 15-20 hour romp, then I'll be satisfied.

I know Ubi-Soft is making serious bank from Assassin's Creed that they have money to play with for risky or semi-risky ventures, but the price point definitely caught my attention.
It looks damn good.  I sincerely hope Ubi-Soft puts out a concerted marketing push as I think this game deserves a chance to become a hit.  I definitely have every intention of making this a day one purchase.

And with a new GFX card I bet it's nice and purty, too :D
It does indeed.

I am generally not a fan of FPS games, but I make an exception for this one.  I recently purchased new graphics cards for my computer and they came with free downloadable copies of the game.  After playing about six hours of the game, I have to say it's a blast.

I think the game looks gorgeous.  I also liked the music that was playing in the trailer posted to the main site.  This game has certainly piqued my interest.
