A game being subtitle only isn't enough to make me not buy it.  While my preference is English language spoken dialogue, for games to have the dialogue not localized, it isn't a deal breaker.  I certainly won't turn down a great game over the lack of English voices.

I would be less tolerant of passive forms of entertainment like animation and film, however.  I can tolerate subtitles for games, but not for film and television.
17  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys (IV) Celceta, Sea of Trees on: October 01, 2011, 08:14:17 PM
I`m not exactly impressed with the visuals, but I`m still stoked for this! It`s a Falcom game and they (almost)never suck.

Come on, it's a port of an early 90s game, though I don't know whether touched up the visuals from the PC or SNES version or made them from scratch. Presumably they touched up one of the versions? I think it has a certain Suikoden V vibe that I kind of like.

"Touched up" is quite the understatement... And it already can't be a port because of the inclusion of extra characters in addition to Adol. It's a full blown remake, but it may not be that either because Falcom never made their own version of Ys IV. They're finally making their own version of Ys IV, which makes this a lot more exciting than the news of most remakes.

In regards to just the visuals though: They look barely better than PSP... which makes me wonder if this was originally a PSP game before they saw the Vita announcement and decided "fuck it, we'll just port our work up to that."
That would be my guess. It looks like it's using the same graphics engine Ys Seven uses.  While the engine was fine for a PSP game, its not nearly as impressive for the Playstation Vita.  A part of me was actually rather disappointed with the new game's visuals.  While it won't stop me from buying the game (in fact, it's a system seller for me), I do wish it looked more impressive visually.

That is a significant part of it.  The other reason is that I want to experience the spoken dialogue in my own language and not a foreign one.

TBH I'd prefer it if the original voice acting was kept with subtitles, since I love some of the voice actors for the game judging from the trailer.

Great news. Hope we do see this series come to the US.

Edit: A Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky OAV is coming out this fall. I'd have loved if it was a whole tv series, but this is still better than nothing. I hope it's good.

Not me.  If there is one thing I can't stand is watching scenes spoken in a language I can't understand.  I would prefer poor acting in English over great acting in Japanese if it means I can understand the dialogue.
20  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ninokuni (Ghibli + Level 5 RPG) going PS3 on: September 07, 2011, 11:07:37 AM
I just saw the latest trailer posted on the main site.  If I didn't already have ready access to a Playstation 3, I would seriously consider buying one just to play this game if a Western release were announced.  It looks like an animated film that you can play.  In my mind this game is definitely a system seller.  If it plays half as well as it looks, I can see this being a genuine classic.

The look of the game is just so impressive.  Every time I see it, I can't help but think it was a labor of love on the part of the creators.

All interest I had in the game evaporated when it was revealed that it is an online RPG.
22  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: tri-Ace Technical Demo on: April 23, 2011, 04:07:09 PM
but this blows everything I've ever seen before out of the water.

You serious? I can't believe some people are so impressed by this.

As for the Naughty Dog comparison, it's not about the budget, a lot of games with huge budgets are a technical mess. What they have is people with an unbelievable amount of talent.

Well, not including Crysis, but it's just not fair to compare anything to Crysis.

Why not?  And why even stop at Crysis?  I can think of a lot of games and demos that are more impressive than what that tech demo showed.  All we got to see are two characters, a small room, some standard-fare lighting effects for this generation, and a not-really-detailed open space with some rockets going off in the distance.  Hell, the grass is static and doesn't move despite evidence of wind when a couple of leaves fly by.  This blows away everything you've ever seen?

Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSXyztq_0uM

or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqNHJ-ekMR4

Those are just tech demos, but they are running in real time as well.  There's plenty of games to check out that are more visually stunning than that tech demo on PS3, 360, or PC.
While I think the tech demos you linked to look better than the one produced by Tri-Ace, I still think the demo they made looks good.  I will say that I think the Crytech engine is pretty damn impressive with blur effects in particular.

I just got the game myself.  I have had a good deal of fun with it so far.
24  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: New Information about Final Fantasy XIII on: October 02, 2009, 07:51:41 PM
Well, based on the screen shots and the latest trailer along with the art, it looks like Snow is a very large man.  That could explain why she looks so young compared to him.
25  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: New Information about Final Fantasy XIII on: October 02, 2009, 06:28:56 PM
I thought the English voice actor for Snow is pretty solid.  One thing that bothers me though is how inferior the US website is to its Japanese counterpart.  Whenever I look at the character profile for Serah, I keep sensing a bit of a jailbait vibe.  That's probably my inner pervert shining though, though.
26  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Free Indie RPG - Legionwood!! on: September 04, 2009, 02:35:51 PM
However, the art is definitely NOT up to snuff with Eternal Eden, by far. In fact, it's several factors worse. In every way, practically. I like the sun glare in the Sheerbark Ruins. Nice touch. I also dislike random encounters, whereas EE almost entirely got rid of those and let you decide if you wanted to face any enemy you ran into. Also, those enemies never returned, which was very, very nice.
I haven't played the game but I wanted to comment on this one issue.  Frankly, I happen to think that of all the indie RPG's I've played or looked at, Eternal Eden is far and away the best when it comes to art.  The only game that I can think of that has artwork of a similar quality are the recent Aveyond game (and unfortunately, it's only for the cover art).  I happen to think in that regard EE is simply in another league.  Most indie RPG's are going to fall short.
27  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Blue Dragon is the most underrated next-gen RPG on: August 27, 2009, 01:51:30 AM
I thought the game was a lot of fun.  The final boss did come out of nowhere a little but at least he wasn't completely out of left field like a few Final Fantasy final bosses I can think of.
28  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Blue Dragon DS Action game being developed by.. on: August 27, 2009, 01:48:38 AM
I think the game looks nice.  What I don't understand is how Namco Bandai got involved.  What happened to Mistwalker?
29  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Lunar: Silver Star Harmony trailer on: August 21, 2009, 09:12:42 PM
Part of that had to do with the speed of the Playstation's CD-ROM's read speed.  With the faster read speed of the PSP, the video should be much clearer.

I actually suspect the UMD drive reads slower. Note the increased loading in some PS1 to PSP UMD ports! It probably has more to do with the codec or something in creating higher quality video.
Really?  I find that somewhat surprising considering that the technology of the PSP is a decade newer.

one thing i really liked about Lunar 1 was jessica *cough* and the bromides *cough*
a healer that could actually kick some ass physically. as for the anime scenes i hope they at least clean them up. i just popped the game in my ps2 and they look grainier than most youtube video's
