Let's just say,

this

game

is

rpg

of

the

decade

havent really loved an rpg as much since psx era (except sora no kiseki). It's Xenosaga, Xenogears, no, it is Takahashi, DONE RIGHT, for the first time in his life. This is the finest product of his lifelong dream.

And yes, this IS the messiah of JRPGs.

Hmm...kind of skeptical it's that good based on what I've seen of it, but that certainly raises my interest level.  Although Famitsu gave it a higher score than Xenogears or any Xenosaga game so that certainly is a consideration, I suppose.

Pokemon FireRed: Almost 17 hours.  Just about to hit some tower for some reason.  Hell, it's Pokemon, there's no real point in doing any of this.  Unfortunately, being OCD, this game has me down despite the fact that critically it's a pretty primitive experience.  Kadabra, being the one man army that he is, makes the combat portions mostly irrelevant.  Admittedly though, that's pretty much true with most pokemon with levels...just psychic has always been absurdly overpowered compared to other abilities, and with a high special attack for Kadabra...yeah.
3  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: permanent death now optional in new Fire Emblem on: June 12, 2010, 11:34:21 PM
Just because something's a staple doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing to keep going.  In this case, while it's certainly more realistic to have permanent death, I've never really understood the sense in it when all it does is make you be overly cautious (and/or rely on overpowered characters).

The horrible pink creature that is proof that God exists and hates the inhabitants of this planet is called Chuchu

Pretty much the best parody I've ever seen.

Considering I'm going through FFVII right now, trying to apply it to the Bush administration is more than a bit of a stretch. :P  Actually, what surprises me more than anything else is just how corny a lot of that dialogue is.  I don't remember it fondly as top prose, but the whole Corneo scenario in particular...ugh.

Also in terms of the religious point, there are some works out there that do try to posit a particular religious belief in Japan.  Hermes - Winds of Love is a cult's attempt to gain greater legitimacy by spreading its tenets, and there's a plethora of Shintoism and Buddhism elements sprinkled throughout a lot of cultural works.  Granted the Christian elements, when they do appear, tend to be "Christianity is some weird evil foreign religion" messages, but that's what happens when you're unfamiliar with the subject matter and want to use it anyway, not unlike our own fascination with ninjas and and samurais and Buddhism and whatnot as mysterious concepts.  That and a lot of the creators are just as liberal there as they are here.  But that...as they say...is another story.

I'm not going into the specifics, but whoever said high school is the best days of your life never made it to college.  And I'm sure glad college was better because high school was a living hell.

The jocks were mostly pretty reasonable in my school though.

That's actually one of the main reasons why I really enjoy playing games that let you determine just how nice or mean you are (especially when the game actually lets you, rather than basically shut you out of like 90% of the world by doing so).  In traditional media characters are predefined by the creators.  Games can let you make those choices.  Assuming, of course, that the game gives you that opportunity.  I think half of the reason why I like The Witcher as much as I do is because you can equally be a virtuous character or an absolute villain and still make your way through the game.  Obviously those choices come at a cost, but half of the fun is seeing what happens as a result of your actions.

Sakura Taisen V: 17 minutes (yeah, a lot I know :P).  Anyway, just as awesome as I figured it would be, though I've already facepalmed at the obligatory Japanese VA attempting to speak English.  Hopefully it doesn't get as horrible as the ST movie, where I had to resort to subtitles to decipher the English lines.  Never a good sign when the character's supposed to be a native English speaker!

Pokemon Fire Red: 2ish hours.  Other than when capturing Pikachu froze up my game the first time and erased like 20 minutes of farming, it's the grinding that I know and love.  I wish some of these monsters turned out as well in your party as they do when they're fighting you (Zubat, why can you only grab one HP at a time?).  :(

FFVII: 5ish hours.  Just got out of the initial areas.  Forgot just how much skippable crap there is in the game.  If the game were harder, I'd probably go check a FAQ from time to time to make sure I don't miss out on it.  Anyway, still digging FFVII with my custom soundtrack.

...that and 3D on the iphone (or ds for that matter) is not exactly a plus.

From what I've seen the iPhone IS pretty capable with 3D, it's the DS where it's usually better ignored or used in moderation.

Lot of folks bitch about how PSP is basically just the iPhone with more expensive games. :P

Hoping we get http://www.siliconera.com/2010/04/23/zero-no-kiseki-in-development-for-psp/ too.

So, the iPhone RPG developed by Media.Vision and published by Square Enix was released on the 20th for $12.99.

For THAT much money, it should be awesome!  I kid, but you know most of the iPhone reviews are along those lines.  I have no iPhone so I have no opinion on the game. :P
13  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: U.S. Government on Piracy on: April 20, 2010, 05:44:58 PM
While I think it's obvious that corporations are going to inflate the importance of piracy to a company's bottom line rather than do a careful study of the factors that may be contributing to less demand for a given product, on the other hand I don't think this particular article refutes anything.  All it really told me is that the numbers are based primarily on government studies that are difficult to verify.  However, anyone familiar with how the government operates knows that more often than not, the left hand rarely knows what the right hand is doing in government agencies.  The inability to provide information upon request is hardly unusual regardless of the subject, despite the many laws that have been put into placing mandating that records must be kept and provided in a timely manner.

FFVII PC- 1 hour.  Well, maybe.  Anyway, I'd played this quite some time ago, but I misplaced the CDs and just got them returned to me encrusted in cookie crumbs (...), so now I'm going through to see if the stupid CDs still work fine.  Also, it's because someone let me know a while back (2-3 years ago?) that a number of user mods had been put out that made its performance a lot spiffier than the default mediocre performance (well, compared to what I could put out with an emulator and the PSX version).  Most specifically I was intrigued in the custom soundtrack.  I liked a few FFVII tracks, but for the most part, it felt pretty uninspired to me - and the MIDI PC version sure didn't help matters any.  After a few hours of screwing around with everything to (mostly) getting it to work properly, now I can say the results are as impressive as I had hoped.  A few FFVII remixes, a lot of God Eater songs, a few The Witcher songs, and the Ys song or two later, it's almost like a whole new experience.
15  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys Seven on: April 17, 2010, 11:51:05 AM

I just thought Ys 7 when I saw y7s in the title but XSeed could be bringing over much more.

Considering they teased that we'd have lots of reasons to be thankful we had a PSP, I would certainly hope it's more than just Ys VII (although that in and of itself would be awesome).
