2461  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / World of Warcraft OH MY GOD CURRENT EVENTS THREAD on: January 15, 2008, 01:04:51 PM
Raiding has come a ways since BWL.  Unless you just don't like raiding anymore, I think it's worth it to give it another shot.  At this point though, it seems to be harder to find guilds actively doing it since PvP overall gives better rewards (compared to karazhan) for less time and effort.

Paladin tanks aren't that bad at all.  I don't know what kind of buffing they got from the last patch because we don't use them (and I never played with one) but I hear they have good frontload and AOE threat (tanking Illihoof might be a good job for them because of the imps, no clue though).  It seems blizzard is trying to make the 3 tanks, Warrior, Paladin, and Druid, all good at certain types of encounters.  People just need to learn more about them.

Been playing Mass Effect lately since I moved back to school.  When I first played it at home, I hated it and felt it sucked and was a waste of money.  When I got back to school, I restarted with a different class and am enjoying it a lot more.  I'm thinking of going to the rental store this weekend to rent CoD4 or Blue Dragon if available though.

In fact, in today's modern world, I think gender portrayal works more against men than women. Since the higher paying jobs and better opportunities require more and more skill, and less labor, women suddenly have a big advantage, according to current gender-roles shown in entertainment.

Definitely depends on the job and place.  A lot of business execs see women more dedicated to their family than their job and are afraid they'll eventually take maternity leave which (in their minds) will cause a big mess.  There's more things about gender inequality, but frankly I don't remember what they say anymore.

But looking at pay and ratio of men to women in higher positions, I'm glad to be male instead of female in that regard.  Of course, this is starting to change, but it seems to be a slow change.

On topic, I don't know much about it.  Dincrest's idea seems most likely to me though.
2464  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Super Smash Brothers Brawl for $19.82 on: January 12, 2008, 06:41:19 PM
I read on digg (anything I read on there I take very lightly, so I'm asking here) that some people were not being refunded their taxes/shipping and handling.

For anyone who got the preorder in at 20 dollars, did you get a full refund?
2465  Media / Single-Player RPGs / GOTY? on: January 12, 2008, 11:37:26 AM
Please do correct me if I'm wrong (and I loved P3, so I want to be), but doesn't FES pretty much stay in one location only the whole time
Code:
the dorm
(besides dungeons, that is) as well as being much more dungeon crawlerish than P3?  Also no persona compendium kinda sucks too.

Just from the impressions and reviews I read, I can't see how they made it better.

Lately I've been lamenting over the lack of Jrpgs on the 360 because I bought one recently and haven't been enjoying it as much as I was hoping to.  Between this and the news about Tales of Vesperia being 360, I've become happier about it.

Barring anything rash, like a 75% or less review from the 'Fan, it looks like i'll probably pick it up.

edit:  Blue dragon is now 25ish bucks from amazon/ebay sources.  Without telling me to read a review elsewhere, is it worth picking it up for that amount? =P
2467  The Rest / General Discussions / Kotaku: 3 Companies blackball EGM over poor reviews on: January 09, 2008, 02:25:52 PM
Good for them.  I'm glad for the industry as a whole if this becomes more well known.

Though, personally I stopped relying on magazines and sites like them awhile ago.  The majority of games I play are RPGs and often I don't understand their scores or agree with them (hence I rely on this site, heavily).  Even after all this time, I still can't wrap my head around the 9.5-10 scores that EGM gave FFX-2.
2468  Media / Single-Player RPGs / favorite hero and boss from any game on: January 07, 2008, 10:06:10 PM
It was kind of hard for me to figure this out at all.

I agree with the Luca Blight and the spoiler part.  He was a great and memorable antagonist.

I was trying to think through some of my favorite games and I couldn't really come up with any that were my favorite and who I absolutely loved (Lately, not many main characters of a story have won me over).

I also liked Laharl for his wacky humor and insane banter (also am a big Disgaea fan so I'm a bit biased.

unlike Kefka (the next best example) he has genuine reason to be completely fucked up even though it isn't explicitely stated in the game itself.

I used to think this way too, but I recently played through FF6 again (but for the GBA) and at some point, I think at the Imperial Camp with Sabin and Cyan, one of the soldiers remark that Cid fried Kefka's brain when he overly infused him with magic.  I don't know if this was in the Japanese version or not, but it was something I noticed this time and thought was worth mentioning because it was news to me.  Would have been nice if it was given more attention to.

edit: I do notice you wrote explicitly, so maybe you caught this yourself.  Still thought it was worth mentioning since it seemed like it was easy to miss.

Well, at the time the quest was made, the only two available were Scholo's and BWL's.

Nevertheless, a little investigation shows that it can't be done at Shattrath anyway.  Bummer.
2470  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / World of Warcraft OH MY GOD CURRENT EVENTS THREAD on: January 07, 2008, 02:56:16 PM
I imagine Shattrath City's alchemy lab should do just fine, but I'm not positive.  It's worth a shot.  It's located in Lower City down by the birds up in their nest house.

As for keeping bracers, now is definitely the time to upgrade everything.  The outland stuff owns anything Azeroth has to offer.

how was he notorious?  Notorious for being an asshole? or notorious for being bad (which apparently wasn't the case anyway)?

I've rarely ever been able to play with a notorious person and still be able to say "he was skillful" by the time the partying was over so i'm curious.

Also, I've heard that Japanese classes are mostly a waste of time and that you're better off teaching yourself. From talking to some of the people I know, this is probably true. I think they mentioned spending an entire month on the kana, when you really shouldn't need to spend more than a week on those**.

That very much depends on the school/college.  A lot of schools seem to go at different speeds.  I know that there are schools that go pretty fast and burn through books at a respectable pace.  Trying to learn it outside of a class can be bit of a burden if you have an intensive class schedule.  There are a ton of good resources out there, I agree.  For me, it was a tremendous help to have classes to go along with what I was reading from my own books.  Others might not need that help.

Overall, if you go to a school with a good program, I think taking it at a school is a good idea if you have the extra time/credits.  I'm not a Japanese major but 3 of the Japanese courses I took still filled up slots in other elective requirements for me, which was very nice (not always applicable though).  If anything, if they do fill up a slot or two (or three) that you'd have to fill up with other less desirable classes anyway, it can provide a starting point for your personal studies.  Of course, experiences do vary.

Though personally, I did not find anime or jpop useful at all for quite some time.  The most useful thing I ever got from it was a quirky word or some kind of dialect that I'd occasionally try to use to get a chuckle from my teacher.

Nevermind, I see your point.  I was looking at the 8% of those are from the US figure that Chris Winkler posted.  I guess that really wouldn't give you what you're looking for.

2475  Media / Single-Player RPGs / new FFXIII trailer on: December 29, 2007, 05:48:39 PM

A similar problem comes up with the Versus protagonist, who is only barely better than Lightning when it comes to design. He suffers being a clone of Advent Children's Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz, as well as Organisation XIII (yadda yadda, possible connections). While it's an acceptable look, the red eyes are a really bad touch. It's a well-known though unwritten rule that no one should have red eyes and be angst-ridden in the same design.

Uhh how can you already call him "angst-ridden" when not much has been shown other than a trailer?

Sullen perhaps.  To me, it just seems like he's thinking about the events that are about(or already have) to transpire.  At least going by Chris's preview.
