2026  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Sony's Smash Bros. on: April 28, 2012, 08:27:39 PM
Spyro and Crash are both owned by Activision now (after a series of confusing transactions...), but yeah, if they can get the rights to them then they seem like obvious choices.

Sony actually has quite a few IPs to draw on, but I think their biggest problem is that none of them have the same nostalgia and familiarity as Nintendo's characters.  Part of the problem is that Sony just hasn't been in the business as long, but also they were not initially focused on building persistent franchises and brands (something I think they're trying to change).  I was thinking about what properties they're likely to include and was kind of shocked by how many of them were only from this console generation.  A lot of others didn't start until the PS2.  Here's a list of properties I would be surprised if they weren't in the game (not counting what has already been announced):
Infamous
Jak and Daxter (actually I would almost put this as confirmed since there's a Jak and Daxter stage, but they haven't confirmed any of the characters yet...)
LittleBigPlanet
Ratchet and Clank
Resistance (they did Killzone, so...)
Uncharted

Less likely but still possible:
Ape Escape
Folklore
Gravity Daze (yeah it's super-new and only has one game, but it has a lot of people talking...and gravity-controlling powers would rock in a game like this)
Heavenly Sword
LocoRoco
Syphon Filter
Team Ico's stuff
Warhawk
White Knight Chronicles (yes it's Level-5 but Sony owns the IP)

Long-shots:
Dark Cloud
Demon's Souls
Everquest (not really sure how you would do MMORPG characters...)
Legend of Dragoon
Rogue Galaxy
Wild Arms

(Funny how all the RPGs ended up on that list...I didn't do that on purpose, I swear)

Potentially for stages/items but not necessarily characters:
Gran Turismo (yeah, I don't know how that would work either but it's one of their biggest franchises...)
Hot Shots Golf
Motorstorm
thatgamecompany's stuff (come on, you know a Flower or Journey stage would be awesome)
Wipeout

Sony has also said that there will be third-party franchises in the game.  They haven't said who but presumably they're going to focus on third parties that have traditionally been Playstation-centric.  Even so, this really opens the doors to a lot of potential franchises...

So there's lot's of stuff to drawn on, but it's mostly pretty new stuff.

Er...they've only announced six characters.
2029  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Sony's Smash Bros. on: April 27, 2012, 02:45:37 PM
So it's real and official.  And it has the terrible name, "PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale".

OK, rereading this old thread I was clearly very down on this game.  And now that there's some video out there it looks even more like a carbon-copy of Smash Bros. than I feared.  Clearly it isn't winning any originality points.  But at least all the game journalists who have played it are claiming that it's pretty fun.  So it's a rip-off, but perhaps not a shitty rip-off.

I don't know what to think.

In India and China, girls as young as 9 are being sold off as brides with no choice in the matter, as if they're nothing but a piece of property! With these sorts of things going on, suddenly the whole Otaku subculture doesn't seem so "harmless" anymore.

...

This thread has jumped the shark...

I hate the new practice of mods replacing usernames with their first names. I don't know why, but I do. It's not like I have anything against anyone personally. In fact I have it whenever people around here throw around 1st names like we're supposed to know.
It does kinda kill the whole impersonality of the internet, doesn't it?

No, Facebook did that.

Sega

Zephyr and Leanne from Resonance of Fate.

Without Vash though..... D:
...this is tragic.

Seriously, Vash is what made that game good...

Well I haven't had an erection in almost 3 years now, so it certainly isn't about the sex appeal for me.... I am a huge fan of all this crap but NEVER would I EVER claim it is meaningful, or anything beyond fanservice for that matter.... I do adore these games for very shallow reasons and that I will gladly admit. It is bright, bubbly and makes me happy in a nostalgic way that reminds of being a kid again I guess... Its hard to express really, but its all about the visual aesthetic of it all for me.... Maybe... Okay surely, I'm just weird.... but come on, there has to be some other folk out there that just happen to like the stuff because it oozes some of the most beautiful, albeit cliche and over done, anime-esque graphic to grace console gaming..... Even as big of a fan as I am though (and I am a freakin' ridiculous fan of these admittingly poor titles), once again, to claim they've got any type of appeal beyond that is sort of absurd I suppose.... I feel like fans create a worse stigma for this stuff than the actually games, products or bonus material itself....

You know, I can actually respect that.

People like what they like.  It's harmless fantasy.  I can't help but feel that some people are a little too eager to stigmatize others over stuff like this.  It's just drawings, guys.

That said, it's not so much the sex or fanservice in these games that bothers me so much as the mindlessness of it all.  The development seems so forced and cliche.  And if the rest of the game doesn't measure up then why are you playing a game at all instead of reading manga or watching anime or something?  I find bad gameplay pretty intolerable.

I would actually welcome more well-written sex scenes in games, but that's pretty damn rare.

Fine, fine.

Now where can I get a drink?

I thought P4 was much, much better, but why are we talking about this here?
2036  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Record of Agarest Wars 2 LE.... and its coming out in the US... on: April 22, 2012, 10:31:46 PM
this is just too cool

No, I don't think "cool" is the word I was looking for...
2037  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tetsuya Nomura hints at possible sequel to The World Ends With You on: April 20, 2012, 05:53:54 PM
This one has been on my "to get to" list for quite some time now.... It is just the art style that turns me off everytime I look to my shelf to pick my next backlogged title.... How hip-hop-ity is this really? cause it sure looks awfully hip-hop-ity to me......

I wouldn't describe it as "hip-hop-ity" at all...certainly it's a contemporary urban setting, but it's still distinctly Japanese.  And the music and art draws from a number of different sources.

Not another one of these threads...
2039  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Awesome Anime's and Manga's That Really Rocks! on: April 19, 2012, 05:33:42 PM
Agreed.  Honestly I thought 20th Century Boys was pretty weak.  Interesting concept, but too drawn out and there was so much retcon'ing (How many times can you go, "Oh, remember that guy who was totally our close friend but we never mentioned even once before now in all our flashbacks...turns out he's important now all of the sudden").  It got really convoluted towards the end, too.

Monster is great, though.

I suppose I really should see War in the Pocket one of these days.  I've heard good things but somehow never got around to it...
