This guy really likes ramen:

I respect that.
2027  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Recommendations for RPGs on a PSPgo? on: March 23, 2013, 01:18:30 AM
I know I'm in the minority here (in fact I think there were people in this thread who recommended the game), but personally I think the PSP version of Lunar is terrible.  Mostly on a technical level.  They made some really weird decisions in that game.  Combat is embarrassingly easy.  I feel like you would have to intentionally tell your party to just sit there and do nothing every turn to actually lose a fight (and even then it would take a while).  But despite being so easy it moves slower than a snail high on marijuana.  Every animation is unnecessarily long and filled with awkward pauses.  Combined with the complete lack of any credible threat this makes combat purely a chore.  This is literally how I would play the game, absolutely no exaggeration: At the start of a turn I would queue the actions for all my party members, then I would put the PSP down and do something else, like browse the web for a while as I waited for it to be my turn again.  There was no reason to actually pay attention to what was happening on the enemy's turn since my party was never in any danger.

Then there are the loading times, oh the loading times.  Which get compounded by really weird and unnecessary stage design.  Why does practically every single house have a foyer with absolutely nothing in it as a completely separate map?  Which, despite being literally two steps wide, takes just as long to load as a full-sized map?  So to enter a house you go through the door, load load load, enter the foyer, walk to steps, load load load, do whatever you were going to do in the house and then exit, load load load, you're back in the fucking foyer again so you walk two steps to get to the other side and then load load load, etc.  It drives me mad!  Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?!

Sorry, I'm getting emotional.  I really can't stand that game...

Hmm, I guess is the point where I have to shamefully admit I haven't actually watched NISA's version yet...saw it fansubbed when it was airing and then bought the discs to support it (I do that a lot...).  But they could be blank for all I know...came with nice artbooks, though.

What are you guys arguing about?  You keep going "yeah, but" and then agreeing with each other ;)
2030  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Thread -- Making people crazy since 1987, kupo! on: March 22, 2013, 01:55:54 PM
Looks like I don't need to eat my hat!  That game sooner than I expected, honestly.

I am the only person that the laughing scene didn't bother a single bit? It made perfect sense given its context. In fact, it making you uncomfortable because it sounds so forced and awkward also makes perfect sense given its context. Without the internet telling me the scene is an abomination, I don't think I would have ever given it a second thought.

I actually agree.  I didn't think twice about the scene back when I actually played the game.  I mean, it's supposed to be awkward.  Of course when you take it out of context it looks pretty awful...
2031  Media / General Games / Bioshock Infinite on: March 22, 2013, 04:08:02 AM
OK, so there was a Bioshock infinite topic already but the last post in it was back in August 2011 and I'm not that into thread necromancy...

But seriously, game comes out Tuesday.  Looks pretty awesome.  IGN's review is up, but nobody else is allowed to tell you how they feel until Monday because of, you know, things.  Thems the breaks.

But it sounds like the game really does live up to its lofty promises.  Who's getting it?
2032  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Best Anime No One Has Seen on: March 21, 2013, 10:49:19 PM
Since this thread has been resurrected, Katanagatari is definitely worth mentioning.  It's on my mind because it's being rebroadcast in Japan.  Definitely one of my favorite shows in recent memory, but I don't believe it actually did very well.  When it was originally broadcast they went for an odd, one hour-long episode a month format which may have contributed to it's niche status.  The rebroadcast should be weekly, so hopefully more people will watch it.

On this side of the pond, NISA licensed and released it on disc (I have the special edition box sets, they're awesome), but I don't think it's ever been streamed anywhere.  It would be nice if CR or someone picked it up.
2033  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of PlayStation(s) revealed on: March 21, 2013, 08:00:36 PM
I played Vesperia PS3, you're really not missing that much.

I wonder how many of the people whining about it would actually buy it if it came out today...
2034  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon's Crown (Vanillaware RPG, now 2013 all regions) announced for PS3/Vita on: March 21, 2013, 03:47:22 AM
Gotta say, that looks amazing.

Now the question is PS3 or Vita...
2035  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Thread -- Making people crazy since 1987, kupo! on: March 21, 2013, 01:40:11 AM
Is it just my imagination, or does Bartz have cleavage in his character portrait?

And he's supposed to be a guy...
2036  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Screw announcements, let's just release the game (Atelier Totori Plus) on: March 20, 2013, 10:07:56 PM
Well, technically it picks up after the events of Rorona.  I say 'technically' only because not much actually happens in Rorona.  The main stories are unrelated, but there are a number of returning characters.  That said, mechanically it's a much better game than Rorona, so it's hard to actually recommend that you start with Rorona unless you're really into the series or something...

So I would say yeah, Totori is a reasonable place to start. Just keep in mind that you'll be missing the occasional reference from the previous game.
2037  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mind 0 is not Persona...er...well...maybe not... on: March 20, 2013, 05:57:47 PM
Well, it looks like it's a first person dungeon crawler, so that's kind of different...yes I'm aware that the original Persona was also first person.  But the rest of the design seems cribbed from 3/4.

Honestly I'm with Klyde on this one.  It's pretty obviously a clone, but I think there's room for a clone or two out there.  Nobody else is really copying this formula...
2038  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 20, 2013, 08:22:39 AM
Please don't tell me that you're just finding that out now. I can't seem to go anywhere on the internet without bumping into that. I suppose next you'll be shouting about how Snape killed Dumbledor.

Spoilers, dude!

Actually I'm impressed that Taelus was able to stay pure after all this time.  He got the authentic experience.
2039  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Mind 0 is not Persona...er...well...maybe not... on: March 20, 2013, 02:47:47 AM
Hey, there's a new game coming in Japan which alternates between daily school life with 2D event scenes  and a mysterious other world where certain people can summon entities that represent their unconscious to engage in 3D turn-based battles!  And it's published by a company who's name starts with 'A'!

That's right, it's Mind 0 by Acquire!  What did you think I was talking about?

I mean yeesh, even the art style is similar:

That said, I'm a little surprised there aren't more Persona clones out there.  It's clearly a popular setup and Atlus themselves aren't exactly churning them out...being a clone doesn't mean it has to be bad.  And the Vita could use more RPGs (though it really feels like things have been turning around for it lately).
2040  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Thread -- Making people crazy since 1987, kupo! on: March 19, 2013, 11:58:48 PM
As long as they don't find some way to add ridiculous microtransactions I'm cool with that.

That's a big if, though.
