2026  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Screw announcements, let's just release the game (Atelier Totori Plus) on: March 19, 2013, 08:39:02 PM
Wait, WTF?

I can confirm that it is actually on the Vita store.  I have half a mind to just buy it right now because of the sheer weirdness of this release, but on the other hand I've already played Totori and don't really need to add to my backlog...

My P5 checklist includes... well, the opposite of what most of you want. Haha. I love the P4 cast and the entire atmosphere.

Dark is pretty often overdone (poorly) these days, but I wouldn't complain about a darker storyline, either, as long as the characters are still likeable. These guys have done dark before, and done it very successfully.

Could not agree more.

Feeling like crap today.  Sicker than a sick dog on a sick day.  I blame it on visiting my friends and their one year old kid over the weekend.  Little bundles of disease, they are.  Went to a couple hours early last night but couldn't actually stay asleep.  Taking the day off today and just drifting in and out of consciousness, browsing the web and shit when I'm awake.  I guess it's not that different from a normal day ;)

Was supposed to have a dentist appointment tomorrow but I rescheduled it so as to not get the dentist sick.  Aren't I considerate?

Now if only the game had a chance at being released outside of Japan.

Um, what?  I would be shocked if it wasn't released outside of Japan.

One of the things I liked about AT 1 and 2 is that there was actual, interesting character development to go along with the fanservice (and even the fanservice wasn't nearly as blatent as AT3...).  The whole idea of diving into a character's mind and having them confront their deepest issues was seriously pretty cool.  But AT3 introduced all these sub-personalities and as a result it didn't really spend any time developing any of them.  They just come off as a bunch of 2D stereotypes.

Pair that with the worst battle system in the series (I actually like what it was trying to do, but it failed miserably) and I have a hard time finding a single thing to like about the game...

Ar Tonelico 3 - That part where you run after Saki for way too long.

That last one is like an entire story arc of running across multiple maps with random encounters and tons of unskippable in-game cutscene-ish discussions.
It lasts easily an hour and you are just running after her because she's being stupid. Ends up with her trying to suicide herself because she is so fucking stupid.
I am never doing a Saki game because that part of the game almost gave me ulcers and Saki is one of the worst character I've ever seen.

This one doesn't make a lick of sense, as the only character who actually attempts to commit suicide in that game is Finnel, and even then, that chase sequence doesn't last beyond a few minutes.

More importantly, Ar Tonelico 3 was not an "otherwise great game".  It wasn't even a good game!

Don't get me wrong, I loved the first two Ar Tonelico games but come on...3 was terrible.

Probably couldn't fit both games on a single Vita memory card, but it does seem like kind of a bum deal...
2033  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon's Crown (Vanillaware RPG, now 2013 all regions) announced for PS3/Vita on: March 19, 2013, 01:56:19 AM
It has a release date!

In Japan, anyway...but that's still progress.

Also, anyone ever heard of Attack on Titan?? It's becoming an anime too soon... I dunno, this series sounds like it warrants a checking-out. :D

Hey, I pointed out that show when the lineup for the Spring was first announced.  Believe I called it something like a "must see".  But nobody ever listens to me...if you did you would be watching Blast of Tempest by now ;)

Love how the trailer is two minutes long and gives no actual information about the game.

...wait, I don't love that.
2037  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Neptunia and Vita on: March 17, 2013, 04:34:50 AM
Apparently somebody at Compile Heart likes the Vita...

We already knew about the Idol Neptunia PP spinoff that's coming in June, but that's not an RPG (it's apparently an Idolmaster-like game in the Neptunia universe...) and it's not what this post is about.

No, apparently Compile Heart has announced two more Neptunia games, both coming this year for the Vita.  Milk a franchise much?

One of them, Hyper-Hyperdimension Game Neptunia Re;Birth1, is a remake of the original.  The other is a spinoff staring Black Heart.

Honestly I've yet to play a Neptunia game.  I'm just posting this because I thought it was interesting.  I'm not sure what they're actually doing for the remake (there weren't any real details), but if they improve the mechanics I might consider giving it a shot...seems like a reasonable place to start.  Compile Heart is clearly committed to this franchise...
2038  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Recommendations for RPGs on a PSPgo? on: March 17, 2013, 03:46:16 AM
I haven't played Gungnir yet myself, but Sting makes nice SRPGs that tend to emphasize the S over the RGP.  If that's what you're looking for then I would really recommend Yggdra Union which is one of their older titles but it's still my favorite Sting game to this day.

Am I the only one who really didn't like Hexyz Force?  It's...inoffensive, I guess.  But it did absolutely nothing to grab me.  Everything about it feels tired and generic.
2040  The Rest / General Discussions / Who publishes your games this gen? on: March 16, 2013, 04:35:54 PM
With the recent SimCity debacle and all the hate EA has been getting lately, along with the hate Activision has been getting for a while for various reasons, I became curious about how many games from these big publishers I actually own.  I knew it wasn't very many, and not because I've been actively boycotting them or anything.  It just that these super-massive publishing juggernauts just can't seem to make the sort of game that I like.  I get it, my tastes are weird.

I decided to quantify exactly how weird my tastes are by cataloging all of my PS3 games by publisher (retail only, not counting expansion packs).  Because why not...

Sony: 7
NISA: 5
Sega: 5
EA: 4
Namco Bandai: 4
Square Enix: 4
Atlus: 3
2K: 2
Bethesda: 2
Valve: 2
Konami: 1

This was just PS3 games, so Sony's lead shouldn't be that surprising.  And obviously things would change with handhelds (Xseed isn't even on this list, but I have a ton of their games on PSP.  I would also expect a big jump for Atlus.).  Even so, I thought this was pretty interesting.  I didn't even realize how many Sega games I owned.  And Namco Bandai benefited massively from me importing...I think only one of those games was actually a US release (that would be Tails of Graces f).  While there are a fair number of EA titles on my shelf (mostly thanks to Bioware...), I really don't own a single Activision game.  Again, I haven't been actively boycotting them, they just don't make any games that I care about...

Maybe I should go back and include handheld titles, it really would change things.  But I'm curious what publishers the rest of you favor.
