2026  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Playstation Meeting, Feb. 20th on: February 20, 2013, 09:16:34 PM
Jesus what a waste of time that was. They would have been better served to ride the hype and speculation train so they'd actually have a REAL reveal at E3. I mean, if the CEO and the physical console couldn't even make an appearance, what the hell does that give you? We got to stare at a controller we've all seen leaked shots of for weeks... yay. If they don't manage to nail a sweet spot on the price point, they're screwed. Durango is coming, as is the Steam Box and Apple will probably enter the home console market via Apple TV sooner rather than later, plus we have the Ouya too. The field is going to be super crowded and Sony doesn't have the brand loyalty it commanded with the PS and PS2 anymore. Let's see if they manage to flub yet another console launch... third times the charm.

Specs?  Features?  Controls?  Games?  Do these things mean nothing to you?  The thing I care about least is what the friggin box looks like...

Poor show SQEX, poor show...

Agreed, that was probably the low point of the whole show.  Old stuff and vague promises...why did you even show up, Square Enix?

I don't care about social features, but I doubt they're mandatory.  And there actually is some stuff in there that looks pretty cool.  I could see myself actually using some of the spectator features.

Instant game trials (play as it's downloading) is pure win.  Suspend mode is something I've been wanting on a console for a long time (obviously handhelds do it).  The background downloading stuff isn't sexy, but it does sound useful.

Hardware specs sound great, and they're showing tons of games.  Thus far I'm actually pretty impressed.  Sony hasn't fucked this one up.

Edit: Oh yeah, actually building remote play into the system and enabling it for all games by default is awesome news.  The promise of streaming to any device is also pretty damn cool, but it sounds like that might still be a ways off.

I know some people have speculated that it's related to how much you've spent on the PSN Store.  That's easier to track, anyway.  So if you're only buying physical games I guess that wouldn't matter...

Sony gave me (and a lot of other people) $10 (well, PS Store credit) for being a loyal customer.  I have no idea what the qualifications for being a loyal customer are, but you guys ought to check.

Word of warning, though: the message does not show up on the Vita.  I tried checking there first because I didn't feel like firing up my PS3, but there was nothing.  What the derp, Sony.

Nippon Ichi also confirmed Asagi will be in Disgaea Dimension 2

Come on Nippon Ichi, make her goddamn game already. It's seriously sad to see her get shelved in every game =(

That's the joke, dood.

Hey, college didn't turn me into a lethargic blob.  Grad school did!

no it did not pioneer the srpg genre.... c'mon man i know that you know better and FFT is a blatant expy of tactics ogre.

Pioneer: v. tr.
1. a. To open up (an area) or prepare (a way)
    b. To settle (a region).
2. To initiate or participate in the development of

I never said it was first, but it's undeniably important.  "Pioneer" is exactly the right word to use here.

Also also, the music in FFT alone is worth more than the entire Disgaea series has put out altogether.

Fair enough, but you could just buy the soundtrack ;)

I live in a state where marijuana is now legal and yet I've still never smoked it (and probably never will...).  Watched too many people in college transform from interesting, fun people into lethargic blobs that just lied around smoking weed all day...
2035  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Round 2: Disgaea Hour of Darkness vs. Final Fantasy Tactics on: February 18, 2013, 01:28:13 PM
They're pretty different beasts (despite both being strategy RPGs).  FFT has a good, serious story.  Disgaea is good for completely different reasons.  The story is just silly, but it's genuinely funny and has endearing characters.

In terms of gameplay I honestly prefer Disgaea (and no, not because of the optional mega grinding, I never do that crap and you don't actually have to). Admittedly it's far from a perfect system, but mechanically FFT is a broken mess.  Yes, it pioneered the SRPG genre and is important historically, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a broken mess.  There are so many ways to completely abuse the system and the game has some major difficulty spikes that will punish you if you're not abusing things.

So I guess I'm going to have to disagree with the majority here and say it depends on what kind of mood you're in, but I would honestly lean towards Disgaea.

(Also don't touch FFT unless it's the PSP version because the story is the major appeal of the game and the original translation was abysmal.  Actually I think there's a smartphone/tablet version of the game that also uses the PSP translation, but I haven't played it so I can't comment.)

Man, I was going to watch that Vita announcement thing but I totally did my timezone conversion wrong...
2037  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: February 18, 2013, 01:11:31 AM
Did not expect this.

Listing says PSP and PS3.  That's kind of interesting, as far as I know there was never a PS3 version of the game.  Could this be the first US release of a PSP remaster?

Edit: Derp, forgot the obvious.  Might just be a PS1 Classic, meaning none of the enhancements of the PSP version...
2038  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The NEW Game Journal on: February 17, 2013, 01:04:11 AM
By the way, what's the deal with conversation rings in games? ME started them. Amalur had them (along with normal topic lists. WTF?) Human Revolution has them. Are they superior to just picking conversation choices from a list? Conversation trees don't usually branch in more than four ways at a given node anyway so they don't change the gameplay any, but...

I think they're quite silly, personally.  I really don't see the point.  But they're trendy and cool, I guess.  But I've read actual articles by game 'journalists' (using that term loosely) proclaiming that conversation rings were the future and lists were old-fashioned and obsolete without bothering to explain how they're any different...

Some people get weird about this sort of thing.  And for these big games that cost tens of millions of dollars I guess you just have to do what's expected of you.  Don't want some reviewer marking you down for using "old-fashioned" lists...
2039  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Persona 4 Golden for the Vita. on: February 17, 2013, 12:02:50 AM
Bought the game at launch and still haven't touched it, heh.  But I already played the PS2 version and my backlog is something else...I don't have a 100 hours to sink into a game I already played once, no matter how good it is...

Guy claims to be a tester, then talks about what Gearbox spent their money on...as if he knew.  Testers are the lowest position on the totem pole.  Why would he be privy to the company's budgets?

Maybe he really was a tester, but even so it seems like he's mostly just speculating.
