2026  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: February 01, 2012, 09:14:28 PM
Sad the story wasn't as good as it could've been

Interesting choice of words.  How good could the story have been, really, given what they were working with and who was working on it...

Sounds to me like the game is exactly what I expected it to be.

They did the same thing with DA and DA2, why all the fuss now?

If you get the "Ultimate Edition" of Dragon Age, all the content comes on the disc.

You have to install it, but there's no code.

Massive difference.

How is that even relevant?  The 'Ultimate Edition' was a re-release that came out like a year later.  There certainly was release day DLC with Dragon Age.  I know because I got it day 1 and had to download stuff.

Wait, are they actually calling it an 'online pass' themselves?  I thought that label was just attached to it by angry websites.

They did the same thing with DA and DA2, why all the fuss now?

I wonder that too...

Really good article for those who are confused about the nature of this game.  It's definitely worth a read.

Yup, I can remember paying $30 for a DVD with three episodes on it...seems crazy now but that's what anime used to cost.  If you shopped online on sketchy discount DVD sites you could maybe get that down to $20.  It was friggin expensive.

And box sets were hardly a deal.  Heck, I remember when the first Cowboy Bebop box set came out it cost more than buying the DVDs individually.  Guess they thought the box was worth something...

The thing is, that sort of pricing still exists in Japan.
2031  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Atlus Game Announcement Thread - Mark 2 on: January 28, 2012, 04:09:32 AM
after the debacle that was last year for atlus usa in which they lost 90 percent of there fanbase...........

Yay completely made up statistics!

do you think its a coincedence so far there entire 2012 lineup is rpgs?

Atlus's lineup has always been mostly RPGs...and Catherine, a non-RPG, is the best-selling Atlus game ever in the US, and the second best selling Atlus USA published title.  (The first being Demons Souls.  I have no doubt they would have loved to do Dark Souls as well but it wasn't up to them.)  So yeah, doing things besides RPGs has been a real disaster...

There is no doubt they made some questionable decisions lately (like having anything to do with The Cursed Crusade), but please point to some actual evidence of this widespread anti-Atlus sentiment you're talking about.  Wait, you can't because you completely made it up.

Gravity Daze and a Vita to play it on...
If I get that Vita I'll probably get Uncharted: Golden Abyss too

Can you post your impressions of both games on the Vita thread later when you get them please?

I own both games as well. I imported

You own both?  That's quite an achievement since one of them isn't even out in Japan yet...
2033  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: 2012 anticipations on: January 27, 2012, 10:12:27 PM
I wish they would stop releasing all these new games so I can find the time to play my old games...

OK, seriously though here is what I expect to get:

Kingdoms of Amalur
Final Fantasy Type-0
Tales of Graces f
Ni no Kuni
Atelier Meruru
Grand Knights History
Growlanser IV
Black Rock Shooter
Shining Blade (import, I don't expect it to be localized ever)
Xenoblade and a Wii to play it on...I said I would buy a Wii if they released that game here so I would be a liar if I didn't follow through.

Gravity Daze and a Vita to play it on...
If I get that Vita I'll probably get Uncharted: Golden Abyss too

Funny how my list is dominated by PSP games...even though all the big game sites seem to think it's a completely dead platform.

Man, I need to buy two new game systems...hopefully I can find a used Wii for cheap or something.

Hey folks,

We wanted to post a quick clarification for something we've seen a few comments about. For what it's worth, the House of Valor content was not in the finished game/disc at one point, then removed. It isn't there and we're locking you out of it. The House of Valor was created as stand-alone content, and was always intended to be the first DLC. Instead of holding onto it and charging for it later, we opted to give it to everyone who purchases the game new, for free, on launch day.

Free DLC is exactly what this is.  Stop freaking out.

To alcohol!  The cause of--and solution to--all of life's problems.
2036  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur on: January 27, 2012, 04:52:14 PM

Those bastards are including a code for free DLC in every new copy of the game!  How dare they!

BTW, the code doesn't work yet because the DLC isn't even finished yet.  So this isn't unlocking content that's already on the disc or something.

It's amazing how a genuinely nice gesture can be grossly misinterpreted...

Can somebody explain to me what is so great about Guilty Crown?  I'm not trolling or anything, but after reading so many positive comments about it I tried to give it a shot and watched a few eps...but I felt completely let down.  It's just another formulaic sci-fi mecha show with a main character who acquires deus ex machina power and otherwise suffers from generic shounen protagonist syndrome.  I tried to give the show a decent chance so I watched like four episodes but in the end I really couldn't care at all about any of the characters.  And the actual action was uninspired and predictable.  And the overarching storyline is just...stupid.

But I hear so many people going on about how great this show is...I don't get.
2038  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy IX on: January 25, 2012, 01:21:17 AM
FFIX is an odd game for me...I played it, beat it, remember basically enjoying it at the time, but now I can barely remember anything about it.  It left basically no lasting impression on me, positive or negative.  It was just there...
2039  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal on: January 24, 2012, 03:40:05 AM
This is his first full-length feature film

Er, then what does that make The Place Promised in Our Early Days?

I would 5 Centimeters Per Second as 'full-length' too, though that's more debatable.  It's on the short side, yeah, but it's not like that term has a clear definition..
2040  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Megaupload seized / shut down on: January 23, 2012, 05:26:41 PM
Wow, there are a lot of things I want to comment about on this thread...

Point 1:  The music industry has traditionally followed a broken and abusive model based on a near-monopoly of distribution channels.  They massively overcharge, their only real expense is marketing (how much does it actually cost to write a song), and yeah artists get screwed.  They don't really make anything from albums and they're mostly just for promotion anyway.  The money they make comes from giving concerts.

But this has absolutely nothing to do with movies/software/anything else.  Stop talking like it does.  Seriously.  At the very least the fact that there really isn't anything equivalent to 'touring' in any of these other examples should be obvious.  The product is what it is, and 100% of the money comes from selling that product.  Also, making a game or a movie requires a massive investment compared to writing a song.  Triple-A games are costing in the tens of millions to make these days.  Somebody has to fund that.  Even if you don't like the publishers, they are serving a valuable and important role here.  And they also take on real risk, since many games flop and don't recoup their investments.

So basically, shut up about the music industry unless you are specifically talking about pirating music and nothing else.

Point 2:  Piracy does real damage to fledgeling industries.  It's easy to look at the people who are already successful and think something like, "it's OK to pirate their stuff, they're rich".  I'm not going to say I agree with that attitude, but it's something a lot of people have.  However pirates are indiscriminate, and the easiest places to see piracies effect is in areas that have been less successful.  We're gamers here, so look what piracy did to the PSP market in the US.  PSP hardware actually sold quite well early on, but nobody was buying the games (so what do you think they were doing with that hardware?).  As a result game publishers stopped releasing games for it.

I would also like to talk extensively about what rampant disrespect for copyright has done to the commercial manga industry in the US, but I don't have a lot of time at the moment and that's something I could go on and on about.  Basically it's completely screwed it over (and a lot of people are profitting off of it illegally and not giving a dime back to the creators...).

Point 3:  Stop your entitlement-driven whining.  The fact that a company didn't make their product super-convenient to buy doesn't mean you're allowed to steal it.  None of these entertainment products are in any way essential to your life.  You can do without them.
