2026  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: February 22, 2013, 02:04:41 PM
My JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test, a standardized test by the Japanese government) certification arrived today.  Now I have an official piece of paper that says I know Japanese.  I took the N3 test, which is just intermediate level but it was my first time taking it and I wanted something I was confident I would pass.  Planning on taking N2 this year (test is only offered once a year...).

Isn't the N2 the one you need for employment in Japan?

Well, that depends on the employer.  A lot of Japanese companies demand N1 (which is a test that even native speakers wouldn't breeze through...).  Foreign companies that do business in Japan can be way less stringent, though.

Even though I plan on taking N2 soon I feel like it's going to be a long time before I'm ready for N1...

I'm seeing a lot of nerdrage out there based on some badly misinterpreted statements about digital games on the PS4.  People are upset the fact that PS3 PSN games they've purchased won't be available on the PS4, seemingly oblivious to the fact that this is because the PS4 doesn't play PS3 games.  They're completely different system architectures, and they've already said that there isn't backwards compatibility.  Digital downloads don't magically avoid that problem...

Sony has said that they're 'working on' emulation systems, probably starting with PSOne Classics, hopefully joined by PS2 Classics eventually.  But much like the Vita it doesn't sound like it will be there at launch.  Emulation of PS3 games probably isn't possible on the PS4 (the PS3 system architecture is really hard to emulate and the PS4 probably isn't even powerful enough to do it...), so that's where the Gaikai streaming thing is necessary.  Though it sounds like that too won't be there at launch.  Even if it is, I'm not sold on the whole thing based on the bandwidth necessary...

It's not exactly happy news, but it annoys me when people are getting upset over the wrong thing.  It's a backwards compatibility problem, not Sony trying to make you rebuy things you've already purchased.  It sounds like at launch you won't be able to buy them at all...

It's kind of a no-brainer, but US release confirmed.

Yes I'm using the same link in two different posts, so sue me ;)

Oh yeah, The Guided Fate Paradox too.  That might be interesting.

Here you go, confirmed for US this summer.

Was NISA always publishing this?  I had thought Namco Bandai was doing or something, but I forget now...oh well, who cares.  Crap game is crap.

1Up is being shut down.  This makes me sad, that site has some of the best video game writing on the web.

Don't worry, IGN lives on.  They have some of the worst video game writing on the web!

Pretty good interview with Shuuhei Yoshida over at Eurogamer.

Why not Spain?

It's not like that's the only place it's being released.  We already know it's coming, just don't have a date.  I'm sure we'll get more info soon, just Spain happened to announce first...

I'm more annoyed they're keeping the god awful L2 and R2 buttons.

What?  They're clearly different.

Developers developers developers

While there are a lot of expected names on that list, I think what most surprised me about it was the number of niche Japanese developers listed.  Companies like Falcom, NIS, Spike Chunsoft, Gust, Idea Factory, Imageepoch, and yes Atlus have not traditionally been quick to adopt new hardware.  It might just be a list of companies with vague plans, though...

Got to say, now that I've gotten a better look at it I'm liking the new controller.  It's not a big departure, but it does look like there are a number of basic ergonomic improvements over the DS3.  In addition to the sticks and the triggers, the handles look much improved.  Check out the grippy material on them:

Will I actually use the move functionality or touch pad?  Who knows...but as long as they're optional that's fine.  Nothing wrong with having options.

3 friends of mine are in fairly serious credit card debt. Fuck credit cards they are demonic (I applied for one recently and was rejected, poor credit rating).

I don't even get this attitude.  Having a credit card doesn't make you start bleeding money or something.  Sure some people are irresponsible, but you don't have to be.  I pay off my full balance every single month.  Literally.  Had a credit card for well over a decade and I've never had any debt with it.

It's still February, I seriously doubt they've started producing them.  And not finalized doesn't mean they haven't worked on it...just means it's not finalized.
