2236  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Thread -- Making people crazy since 1987, kupo! on: August 31, 2012, 12:10:45 PM
if i could just get that ff3 umd (assuming it's localized) i would be happy.

You're welcome.

Yes it's the JP version, but reports say it has an English language option.  Given the state of the PSP market over here I doubt S-E will ever release it here but since the game was already translated I guess they figured why not include the English script and make some importers happy.

About Versus, I've been skeptical about the story since the first CG trailer was released.  Just...ugh.  Is that really what people want?

Though from what little we've seen the gameplay looked baller.

I bought Symphony of Eternity and got bored after a couple of hours or so.  I don't know, it was functional enough but was so generic there was anything to keep me interested.

I know you listed it, but I'll ask anyway - is this good?  It's on my to watch list as it seems interesting, but the premise didn't exactly sound mindblowing.

It's a really well-made show with a solid cast of characters.  It's about a pretty obscure subject matter, of course, but they find ways to make it interesting.  I didn't know anything about karuta going into it but still enjoyed it.  If I have a complaint about the show it's that the main heroine suffers a bit too much from obscure-pastime-is-actually-really-great syndrome.  She's a little too passionate about it, to the point where it's difficult to relate to.

Also want to start a PS3 run soon.  Thinking either Valkyria Chronicles or 3D Dot Game Heroes.  Probably fire it up next week.

Valkyria Chronicles is my favorite game on the PS3.  Definitely play it.

3D Dot Game Heroes didn't impress me, though.  It looks cute, and the world is pretty big and stuff, but the actual gameplay was just too monotonous and I got bored with it.

Yeah, there are still good anime out there, but the early 2000s was really the end of there constantly being quite a few good anime out every season. In the past five years, instead of "hey, what was good in the fall or spring?" I have to ask "hey, is there any anime from 20xx worth a fuck?" The anime industry has been catering to the otaku too much. Most otaku have the same taste in anime that they had when they were younger, but at 22 years old, I don't want to see an anime full of fanservice where the girls look like they're 12.

You are deluding yourself either with nostalgia or the fact that in the early 2000s most people weren't directly following the release seasons in Japan (it was the anime boom when lots of companies were going back to license old works so releases were covering many years at once).  As Mickeymac said there are lot's of good shows today and there really weren't any more good shows in the past.  Don't forget Sturgeon's Law - 90% of everything is crap.  But there's still that other 10%.

If you want to know what's good in a particular season you do have to actually put some effort in, but that's always been true.  Here are some examples:

Current Season: I would recommend Kokoro Connect and Sword Art Online, though it has admittedly been a weak season.
Spring 2012:  Fate/Zero, Kids on the Slope, and Nyaruko-san were all great (and all very different).
Winter 2012:  Natsume Yuujinchou Shi, Another, Ano Natsu de Matteru
Fall 2011: Fate/Zero (first half), Bakuman S2, Chihayafuru

Need I go on?  I've also been watching Sket Dance this whole time (it's the only long show I follow anymore, being a pure comedy avoids the ridiculously-drawn-out-fight problem).  Not a single show I listed is particularly fanservicey, and the only one that's really fits the otaku stereotype is Nyaruko, but it's a comedy that's not afraid to poke some fun at it's own audience.

I seriously have to wonder if people claiming that there's no anime worth watching have actually looked...

Well here's a practical question:  Who the heck carries around their own straw?  Don't the drinking establishments usually provide that?

I can't even remember the last time I drank anything with a straw...

Depends what you like, I guess.  Crest is smaller scale and very character-focused.  It's pretty much just setting the stage for the events that follow.  Banner goes larger scale, more politicy, and is much more of a war story.  Personally I love that sort of stuff, but I also know people who hate Banner because they claim it's all people staring at radar screens and counting backwards from 10 (admittedly there's a lot of that).

Did anyone say Front Mission Evolved was going to be awesome?  I kind of got the impression that even the developers weren't excited about it...

Agent D., I would have more respect for your position if you had an argument that ran any deeper than, "I hate this game 'cause it's stupid."  As it stands you have failed to explain why any of the things you object to are actually bad things, rather than just being your personal preference.  If you were simply stating that you didn't like the style and it wasn't for you then that would be that, but instead you insist that the game is a "piece of shit" and persist in insulting people who enjoy it all the while failing to muster a single coherent criticism of the game.

So yeah, fuck you.

Also, you can own one too for the low, low price of roughly 1.3 million yen.

I would seriously consider buying one if it was only 1.3 million yen.  That's a friggin bargain.

But no, it's 1.3 million dollars.  Slight difference...
