2236  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: December 11, 2012, 01:58:04 AM
Since apparently I have been replacing fans in all my electronics lately...

My PS3 has really not been running well.  I mentioned in crashed in the game journal thread while I was playing Tales of Graces f, but that was just the beginning.  Pretty sure the fan is dying.  So...new fan time!

So I took apart a PS3 for the first time.  Of course I don't actually have the replacement fan yet, but hey, taking things apart is fun.  Man, the old PS3s are beautiful on the inside.  Tightly engineered machines.

The driving dog saga continues!

Am I the only one completely amazed by this?
2238  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Square-Enix is teasing something. on: December 10, 2012, 02:28:04 AM

Some people are speculating that it's a new Star Ocean game but I'm not sure I buy it.  Well, it's certainly star-y.

Was just playing Tales of Graces f, doing the Warrior's Roost arena thing in the future arc.  I worked my way all the way up from the lowest level in one go (no easy task since I'm playing on moderate and haven't power leveled or anything) and was fighting Poisson at the top (and doing pretty well, though it's a long battle 'cause she has crazy hit points) when the game crashed...

That was the first time the game has ever crashed on me, but I don't think I could have picked a worse time if I tried.  I lost about an hour, but it was an hour of constant difficult battles for which there is no guarantee I'll do as well even if I repeat them.  Way to completely sap my desire to keep playing, game.
2240  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Been out of the RPG loop for almost a year....any good RPGs out there for PS3? on: December 08, 2012, 10:48:45 PM
Being out of the loop for a year doesn't really strike me as all that long.  I don't know what you've played, though.  Are you just looking for stuff that came out in the last year?  Here are some recommendations:

Tales of Graces f is the best Tales game we've gotten in a while, but I feel like it doesn't get any respect.  I wonder what percentage of the people constantly whining about Vesperia PS3 actually played Graces f...because it's the better game.

Atelier Meruru - If you like these games then Meruru is probably the best of the bunch.  Combat is much improved and having the three tiers of explorations, alchemy, and development is super-addictive.  But if you don't like the style of these games it's probably not going to change your mind.

Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning will probably be remembered more for the quagmire of 38 Studios than anything else, but that aside it's a good game.  A bit on the easy side, but it has fun combat, and interesting world, and lots of stuff to do.

That...wasn't what I expected.

I don't know about visual quality, but they absolutely will block it for lack of trophies.  That is their policy.

Anyway, this announcement is a no-brainer.  We knew it was coming after the first game was announced.  Honestly I'm surprised they're waiting until April...

Disappointed by the lack of dogs...so here:

Sadly I couldn't find the whole story on Youtube so that link is probably your best bet.
2244  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ninokuni (Ghibli + Level 5 RPG) going PS3 on: December 06, 2012, 03:00:48 AM
Tis the season, I suppose.

But seriously, have you SEEN their track record? Gundam AGE alone should be reason enough never to trust them again or even trust that even the amounts of executive meddling that companies like Sunrise tend to indulge in can reign in their awful writing.

To me they're right in between Squeenix and Crapcom in terms of the quality of treatment it demonstrates between themselves, their franchises, and their fan bases (in Japan; otherwise folks like Zynga, EA, and Actiblizzvision would be mixed in there among others).

I'm not really defending Level-5 (never been a big fan anyway), but I still think your original post was over-the-top.  Not to mention that Ghibli is involved here and they're quite good at what they do.  I don't actually know who did the writing, but what little I've seen is at least competent.  But it's hard to really judge from snippets.

And I didn't watch Gundam AGE because I'm not a masochist so I have no comment there...
2245  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal on: December 06, 2012, 02:56:03 AM
Potentially good season coming up.  The show that I am simultaneously most anticipating and most nervous about is Maoyuu Maou Yuusha.  Anticipating because I've read the source material (and the manga adaptions...yes all five of them) and I love it.  It's a very interesting story that touches on politics, religion, prejudice and yes, a whole lot of macroeconomics.  But I'm nervous because I don't have a lot of confidence in the studio doing the anime adaption and I haven't been very impressed by the promo material.  The character designs look off and they seem to be really pushing the fanservice...note that the source material has basically zero fanservice.  I guess they didn't think they could sell the anime without it.  I'm very worried that they're going to fuck this up.

Speaking of fanservice, the Senran Kagura anime is a thing that exists...not sure what to make of that...might watch a bit just out of morbid curiosity.

More Minami-ke and Chihayafuru is always good.
2246  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ninokuni (Ghibli + Level 5 RPG) going PS3 on: December 05, 2012, 02:32:31 PM
If you're banking on the strength of the story and the characters in a Level 5 game to make up for middling gameplay then you're making a sucker's bet. Honestly, I'll be genuinely surprised if this game doesn't feel like it was written by a 12-year old who's mother abandonment issues and lack of any sort of sex education dominate the choices used to fill out his disjointed narrative cobbled together from a mad-lib of random plot points.

Why you always gotta be so negative?
2247  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon Age Three (3) on: December 05, 2012, 02:31:21 PM
A tight-knit genre? That's stupid. Apparently the zillion subgenres of RPG don't count.

Actually you can easily ignore a game like Skyrim. Especially since the core design philosophy behind DA is completely different from TES. I'll take a more narrow slice of 'content' with more carefully designed gameplay over 'here, have a shitload of mediocre randomness.'

Unless your owner says your game must sell a bazillion copies, so make it like Skyrim,' there's no reason to homogenize.

Also, Skyrim wasn't a new direction. Unless you count selling way more than its predecessors despite being the same basic game' as a new direction. Which is exactly what he's saying, in PR speak.

Couldn't agree more.  Personally I've never really liked Bethesda's RPGs and it's sad to see Bioware being so insecure about their own legacy.  They have been responsible for some really great games (including the original Dragon Age) that are in a completely different style than Bethesda.  A style I actually like.

I can only pray that this is just PR speak and they're not actually abandoning the things used to make them great...

The game is gorgeous, of course, but I'm not really sold on the battle system.  It seems pretty simplistic...and yet at the same time, confusingly presented.
2249  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, The Last 13 Days on: December 04, 2012, 03:02:47 PM
It sounds like they're actually doing some interesting things for this game.  I just wish they were doing them in a game that had nothing to do with FFXIII.
2250  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky on: December 03, 2012, 05:07:06 PM
I know some of the reviews said they didn't like the battle system or maybe they found it boring, but I definitely liked it for the most part once the game got going.

Totally agree.  The battle system is a bit slow in the beginning when you don't really have a lot of options, but towards the end of the game I found it quite enjoyable.  In fact I have a hard time naming a traditional turn-based (non-SRPG) JRPG battle system I like more.  There's really a lot of depth to TitS's system.
