I saw a lot of people getting excited about this over at Siliconera, so I guess somebody likes this series.  Personally, I'm with Dice on this one: There are so many overlooked and better games out there...

Dear Japanese developers. Let the PSP die already.

I like my PSP.

It helps if you learn Japanese...

I don't know anything that closes for Good Friday...

So I just watched the first two eps of the Black Rock Shooter anime.  It's finally streaming on Funimation's site (yeah, I know there are fansubs floating around...I wanted a legit version).

It's, uh...not very good.  I'll grant it that it has great animation in the dream sequence fight scenes...and I like that they used the song.  But that's about it for the pros.  For the cons...we have such a vapid, uninteresting protagonist that I was struggling to stay awake.  Blah.

They had better put this costume in the US version.  It's the only one I care about...

Evangelion was dumb and it bored me.  But I don't think I actually care about it enough to hate it.

I just read IGN's nonreview and it really makes me think about how Tales games (and JRPGs in general) are perceived by the mainstream gaming community.  IGN has always been an unapologetically business-oriented website.  Love them or hate them, they've never tried to hide the fact that they deliberately tailor their content to the things that get the most page hits.  Clearly Tales of Graces f is not one of those things...

I call their treatment of Graces f a "nonreview" for reasons that should be obvious if you read it.  Basically, the author did not finish the game so he neglected to give a score (I can at least respect him for owning up to that), but also wrote barely anything about the game at all.  Despite the fact that what little he wrote about the game was actually quite positive he still could not be bothered to finish it.  And this is not standard operating procedure for IGN (in fact, I can't even think of another example off hand...).  Now sure, it's not exactly a short game, but there are still much longer games that have been gotten full reviews weeks ahead of their release, instead of this half-assed approach as week after release.

Since IGN is about as mainstream as it gets in this industry, I think that says a lot about how mainstream gamers look at JRPGs.  There's all this talk about how JRPGs are dying, but when great games come out on unpopular platforms like the PSP they're often ignored entirely.  And apparently even when they arrive on a popular platform this is the most enthusiasm that can be mustered.  It's really kind of sad.

But there is also something very wrong about this whole approach to journalism.  By deliberately focusing on content that gets page hits they end up rehashing the same few popular franchises over and over.  Reviews, at least, should be an opportunity to alert readers to good games they might not have considered otherwise.  Assuming that they're fair reviews, anyway.  But this whole it's-not-popular-so-we're-not-even-going-to-review-it thing is kind of shocking, honestly.  What purpose do these sites even serve then?  Are they just places to pick up tidbits to be used in the latest CoD vs. Battlefield flamewar?

I'm clearly going off-topic so I'll stop now...

People keep talking about some kind of heat wave.  It's been highs in the 40s here for the last week...

I guess there wasn't actually a dedicated thread for this...it's certainly been discussed in other threads.

Yeah, I'm interested in the game.  I am starting to wonder if it's ever actually getting a release though.
2245  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Conception (Spike PSP Rpg) on: March 19, 2012, 06:19:57 PM
It's a really weird idea, but it doesn't sound like a raunchy game. I'll keep an eye out for a prospective localization of this.

Won't happen. The hero's cousin is pregnant and under 18.

It's also a PSP game...

Am I the only one who found Half-Life 2 kind of boring?  I didn't even finish it.  I thought the original was much better...

Planescape: Torment

That's as close to a perfect game as I ever expect to play...

Jeez, tiny people here.  I'm an XL myself.  Mind you I'm in pretty good shape, I'm just big.

If a shirt is too big you can usually find something to do with it.  But if a shirt is too small...
2249  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Journey - thatgamecompany's new title on: March 16, 2012, 12:59:54 AM
Played through the whole game in one sitting.  After doing that I kind of feel like that's how the game was meant to be played.  Didn't bother chasing trophies or anything, just went straight through.  Took less than two hours, but the game felt worth every penny.  This is a visual and artistic masterpiece.  I have never experienced anything like it before.  And 'experience' is the right word there.  You don't really 'play' it in the traditional sense...

My multiplayer experience was great, too.  I teamed up with somebody for a good chunk of the game.  Even without communication there's a real sense of camaraderie.  Love how they give you the names of the people you met along the way at the end.

This game is amazing.  If you're hesitating then just get it already.  There's nothing else like it.
2250  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Nomura talks KH3D with Famitsu, can't give details about Versus XIII yet on: March 15, 2012, 04:12:00 PM
Zero went through a shit load of changes over the course of development.

I assume you're referring to the fact that it was originally planned for cell phones since I don't know any other major changes that occurred during its development.  But if you read the post-release interviews and stuff they really give the impression that the cell phone game was little more than an idea that never really got off the ground.  By the time serious work on the game started they had already switched platforms to PSP.  Switching platforms in the very early stage of a game's development isn't that strange.  The strange thing is announcing the game while it's still in that stage.

That's what I pieced together from various sources, anyway.  I didn't exactly save the links, though.  The only one I found with a quick search was this

Type-0 was announced five years back, Kitase reminded, adding that he's happy to see it released. The game was in actual development for three and a half years, said Tabata, although there was a period where progress was at a bare minimum as he was working on a different project (The 3rd Birthday). He doesn't feel that the development was long, and wants to get to work on his next game.

Note the "actual development" distinction.
