2266  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Games You'd Like To Give Another Chance And Why? on: December 24, 2011, 01:50:03 PM
As for me... Baldur's Gate 2. The story was interesting, the characters were interesting, the sidequests were interesting, everything was interesting... except for one thing; the combat. I hated the combat; it felt like you had absolutely no control over what your characters were doing, and that all you do was send them out, click repeatedly on the enemy, give them potions if necessary, and see if they win. And spells were another problem; instead of having MP, and instead of being able to use all of your spells, you could only have so many spells at a time, and each spell had limited use; if you ran out, you had run off and go rest until your spells are recovered. I'm sorry, but when I'm in a battle in a RP, I want full, complete control over my characters, (at least as much as can be expected in a Turn-Basesd RPG,) and that also extends to my spells. And while Baldur's Gate 2 was full of detail and good writing, if the combat's not worth it, I might as well play a Graphic Adventure or Visual Novel instead, or better yet, read a book. But, I don't know, maybe I was looking at the wrong way. Maybe there's something I 'm missing. In any case, I might take another look at BG2, just to see whether there was something I overlooked... or if I was right on the mark.

You are the first person I've seen make comments like this, but man I really don't understand it.  If you ask me you have way more control in a Baldur's Gate game than in most turn-based RPGs...not only can you do all the same things you do in any RPG (attack, use items, cast spells, use special abilities, etc.) but you have complete control over the timing since the game is moving in real time and the positioning of your characters actually matters.  Position ought to be an essential part of your strategy, in fact.  And I don't know why you were repeatedly clicking on enemies since you only need to click when you want to do something different.  If you just want your guys to keep attacking the same enemy they'll do so on their own.

Of course there are a lot of things to  manage so pausing is essential.  The game was designed for pause & play.  In fact you can set the game to autopause on certain events so that you don't miss them.  If you weren't frequently pausing while you played and issuing orders while paused then you were playing it wrong...

As for the spell system, well that's straight out of D&D.  If you had ever played a game of D&D you would be used to it but I guess for those who haven't it might seem strange.

I actually would love a PC release on Steam.  Who the fuck don't have a computer, and just about any damned computer can run a J-game.

But my computer runs Linux!

I would play God of War: Tactics ;)

The battery takes up a lot of space because it's a big battery...without some breakthrough in battery technology that's not going to change in a redesign.

What might change is that improving the system's power efficiency will allow them to get better battery life even with a smaller battery.  That happened between the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000.  However that's not something that's going to happen anytime soon.  Probably not for a couple of years at least.

I thought this was interesting.  A lot of people assumed that Sony's 3-5 hour battery life claim was only under ideal conditions, but this test gave 3 hours 47 minutes for the Vita with max brightness and volume.  Of course that's still shorter than I would like, but it is significantly better than the 3DS (though that was with 3D on).

I have no idea why they chose a PSP with an expanded battery for comparison...that's not the standard battery in a PSP.  Though even with the standard battery the PSP would still win by a good margin...

New Nyan Cat video...normally I wouldn't post that shit, but this one is by the guy who actually wrote the song, and it's kind of awesome.

Can somebody who disagrees with me actually respond to what I wrote?  I feel like a lot of people are just throwing up their hands saying there are no good console JRPGs without actually looking.  I just listed 6 quality console titles that out to all be out in 2012: Tales of Graces f, Atelier Meruru, Xenoblade Chronicles, FFXIII-2 (though admittedly I'm still a little skeptical on that one), Ni no Kuni, and The Last Story.

I disagreed, and while I'm not exactly dead serious about the subject, with a tendency to somewhat inflate the issue beyond its actual scale, there is one thing worth pointing out about your argument:
Because most of the "good jRPGs" you named aren't even out yet, any one of them may very well turn out to be a dud. There's a big gap between "promising" and "good".

?!  The original question was about upcoming JRPGs, so I answered with upcoming JRPGs...now I get criticized for naming games that aren't out yet.

That's it, I quit...

In case I haven't mentioned it before I'm a PhD student in the later stages of grad school.  Just found out today that I need to graduate next quarter because there won't be money for me after that (funny how it always seems to work that way).  In a way I'm actually kind of relieved.  I've been dragging my feet about actually graduating for a while now and I've already started writing my dissertation so it's not an unreasonable deadline or anything.  Having a real deadline might make me more productive...

At the same time, there's still a bunch of stuff to do so I'm going to be pretty busy.  I really won't have much time for gaming...I'm thinking about locking all my systems up in a closet or something and not touching them for the next 3 months or so.  That might be a good idea, actually...

Now I completely agree that things were pretty grim early in this console generation but honestly it seems to be changing.  2012 looks like it will be a great year for JRPGs.

And that's not even counting the handheld titles...
2275  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Best Star Ocean: TLH combination. on: December 13, 2011, 11:11:52 PM
I remember the 90s...most games didn't have voice acting.  And we were fine with it.
2276  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal on: December 13, 2011, 08:07:27 PM
About Zero no Tsukaima...don't the first three seasons only cover like the first 10 volumes of the novels? (It was orignally a light novel series, not a manga)  There are supposed to be 22 volumes when it finishes...so they're going to cram 12 volumes of material into a single season?

Mind you there is probably a lot that can be cut but I still don't see that ending well...
2277  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: the next big Jrpgs on xbox and ps3? on: December 13, 2011, 04:00:20 PM
OK, I'm going to quit being sarcastic for a second and respond seriously because honestly I'm sick of this whole 'JRPGs are dead' meme...

Let's look at the list of upcoming JRPGs.  Stupid trailer aside, Graces f is supposed to be a very good game with probably the best battle system in a Tails game yet.  Atelier Totori was a great game even if the style isn't for everyone and Meruru looks like it will be even better.  Xenoblade Chronicles seems to be considered by many to be one of the best JRPGs to come out in the last 10 years.  And even though I've been a very vocal FFXIII-hater I'm actually starting to warm up to XIII-2.  I still think the story will be complete crap but they are doing a lot to improve the gameplay experience.  Famitsu even gave it a perfect score (for whatever that's worth...).

And how the heck has nobody even mentioned Ni no Kuni yet?  That game looks gorgeous.  Definitely deserves more attention.

Europe is getting The Last Story and since NoA finally caved on Xenoblade it's not difficult to think we might get that too.  Further along I'm still optimistic about a Xillia localization, though it looks like that will have to wait until after the "director's cut" or whatever and given the slow localization of Tails games that will probably be 2013 at the earliest.  But if you really want to be complete there are also titles like Neptunia mk. 2 and Agarest 2 in 2012 though I'm much less optimistic about them.

That's just console titles.  Of course if you include handhelds there are even more.  Even in this awkward transition period between handheld systems there are still titles to look forward to like Type-0 (which has been all but confirmed for a western release of some sort, even if we don't know the details...) and Grand Knights History.  Oh yeah, and Devil Survivor 2.

I can't help but think that people are a bit too waxing nostalgic about the 'glory days' of JRPGs.  Sure there were a lot of titles, but how many of them were worth playing, really?  Every game I listed above (with the exceptions of Neptunia mk. 2 and Agarest 2) looks to be at least good, if not great.  If that's what it means to be 'dead', then JRPGs can stay dead for all I care.  There is no shortage of good games for me to play.
2278  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: the next big Jrpgs on xbox and ps3? on: December 12, 2011, 10:49:19 PM
Well, there's Tales of Graces F coming out in March too! With FFXIII-2 in January, Tales in March and Xenoblade in April, my console JRPGs will be satisfied for a while! And there's Atelier Meruru around the corner, too. In fact, I think 2012 is gonna be a good year for us!

How dare you be positive!  Didn't you hear what Sagacious-T said?  It's all doom and gloom from here on out!
2279  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: December 11, 2011, 11:21:15 PM

Nah... some bath robes get too fleecy.  That, and they're only good for so long.  I don't like Hugh Heffing-around in one.  Only good while you're wet.  I'd love to cuddle with a bath towel though (blankets/towels out of the dryer?)

You fool. Stop horsing around w/ old navy robes and get a real cotton one. Fleece robes are fleece jobs.

Robe time is the best time in Yodaland.

I second that.  Robes are awesome.  I would wear mine all day if it was socially acceptable...
2280  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on: December 11, 2011, 08:42:17 PM
It's Metal Gear in name only.  Totally smacks of Vanquish.  With some Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta mixed in.

I'm OK with that.
