2266  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tokitowa - Time and Eternity (third person 2D/3D RPG, imageepoch, PS3) announced on: July 07, 2012, 02:09:56 PM
Thread resurrected on account of localization rumours.

Though I really still want to see how this game actually plays before I get excited about it...
2267  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of PlayStation(s) revealed on: July 07, 2012, 03:01:40 AM
Xillia will be released here.  I have no basis for this statement other than the fact that Xillia is both the highest rated and fastest selling Tales game ever.  It's not some obscure entry in the franchise.  Unless Namco Bandai wants to abandon the series in the west entirely they're going to localize Xillia.

That said, Graces f still isn't even out yet so they're not going to want to start hyping Xillia already.  I seriously doubt there will be any kind of official announcement until after Graces f is released.

But I will bet $100 that there will be a Xillia localization announcement before the end of 2012.  I'm dead serious about that if anyone wants to take me up on it.

I wish somebody took me up on that bet...I could have used $100.

2269  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VII announced for PC, SE Store exclusive with new online features on: July 05, 2012, 06:04:08 PM
The problem with MIDI is that the quality varies massively from soundcard to soundcard.  MIDI is just a set of instructions, and it relies on the sound samples stored on the actual soundcard as a base.  But since MIDI was kind of on its way out already (as a music storage format, anyway) when FFVII PC came out it was usually the first thing any cheap soundcard would skimp on, and you could end up with something that sounded quite terrible.  But on a good soundcard it really wasn't bad.  There was also a completely software-based solution that processed the MIDI stream with the CPU.  It was actually pretty CPU-intensive (at least for the time...shouldn't be an issue on any modern computer) so not everyone used it but it didn't sound bad at all.

I don't understand the complaints.  Is it lame when they offer PS1 classics for the PS3/PSP as well?  Is it lame when GOG or somebody else resurrects old classics?  The thing is, the PC version of FFVII is not only long out of print, it doesn't even work right on modern versions of Windows (it was made for Windows 95 and wasn't the best port in the world...).  So it really isn't an option for most people.  What's wrong with giving more people a chance to play it?

Just because this isn't the HD remake people seem to want (though part of me is convinced that if such a remake were made it would be terrible...) doesn't make it pointless.

Once you start using one, it's hard to imagine not having one.  Curious to see what happens with them since Apple is basically accusing everyone of stealing their ideas.  Hopefully eventually thrown out.

I've been using a smartphone for years.  Since before most people had heard the term 'smartphone'.  I still reserve the right to hate them.
2272  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal on: July 03, 2012, 06:01:50 PM
Stuff I'm looking forward to this season:

Sword Art Online:  Probably my most anticipated show having read the novels, though I'm not completely sure how well it will translate to anime.  There's the potential to surpass the original work here since the original novel, while full of original ideas, was initially a completely amateur work (though it became popular enough on the internet that it was picked up for publication).  It definitely felt rushed because the author was trying to cram too much into a single volume.  But since then he has written many short stories and such that take place during the events of the first book and really flesh out the setting and characters a lot better.  It would be nice to actually see all these events in order in the anime.

By the way, I wish people would stop comparing SAO to .hack.  Yes there is the obvious similarity that they both take place in virtual reality MMORPGs, but other than that they don't have much in common.  Personally I couldn't stand .hack's brand of pseudo-mystical nonsense.  SAO is a much more grounded story that really focuses on the human element of how different people cope with being trapped in this death game.

Tari Tari: A slice of life show by the same people who did Hanasaku Iroha.  'Nuf said.

Campione: OK, seriously, I know this looks generic as heck, but having read a bit of the novels it's actually a lot better than it sounds.  Good characters and some sweet fights.  Should be fun, if not particularly deep.

Dog Days': 'Cause it's more Dog Days.

I am completely addicted to Atelier Meruru.  It's probably been almost ten years since I was this addicted to a game, to the point where I have been neglecting eating and sleeping to get more hours in.  In all honesty I think I liked the story and characters in Totori better (Meruru lacks a driving purpose), but the gameplay has been refined to a whole new level in Meruru.  Having the new third tier of development really helps, so now you have to split your time between crafting, adventuring, and developing.  But they all complement each other perfectly and the feedback is pretty immediate so it leads to a constant feeling of just wanting to play a little more.  Combat--which has never really been a strong point in the Arland trilogy--has also been subtlely improved and it's a lot of fun.  Rather than just being something you have to do it makes me actually look forward to crafting the perfect gear and items so I can take them into combat.

Yeah, this game is friggin good.  What a way to end the trilogy.

So apparently NISA confirmed that they are localizing this at Anime Expo, although there are zero details at this point.  Wait a few months.

I must confess that I've never even heard this "call me maybe" song you're all talking about.  Not once.  Sometimes I feel like I live in a bubble totally isolated from pop culture...
2278  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Crunchyroll PS3 app! on: June 29, 2012, 07:58:42 PM
I thought about putting this in the anime/manga journal, but it's not exactly a show.  And heck, it deserves its own topic.

Crunchyroll just announced a PS3 app.  This makes me quite happy.  In case you don't know, Crunchyroll is pretty much the best way to watch current anime shows (legally).  They stream subtitled anime simulcasted with their Japanese airtime.  Funimation and Viz stream some of their own stuff too (they usually put it on Hulu too), but they don't have nearly the selection that CR does.

I already have a PC plugged into my TV pretty much just for watching streaming stuff, but this is potentially more convenient (and I never configured the TV for proper 5 channel audio output...).  Crunchyroll is doing 720p and even 1080p streams now so the quality should be great.
2279  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Gust announces new Atelier game: Atelier Meruru on: June 29, 2012, 01:23:24 AM
I just want to say that I think the music pack for this game is the single greatest piece of DLC I have ever encountered.  I don't care that it's already on the disc.  In fact I'm glad it's already on the disc, because there's probably gigabytes of music there and I don't want to have to download it an have it take up space on my PS3 hard drive.  It's just $3 and it gives you access to music from like every Atelier game ever made.  Man, why couldn't the previous games have had this feature?  You spend so much time in the workshop in all three games that it's seriously nice to be able to change the background music.  (Of course you can do it for more than the workshop, but the workshop is my main concern).  Bravo, Gust.  You rock.

By the way, has anyone else found that it's much harder to craft equipment with the HP regen trait in this game than it was in Totori?  I managed to do it once but I don't even know what I did...now I'm fumbling around with every possible combination of ingredients I can think of and I'm not getting it to work a second time...

All PS3s play PS1 games.
