What da fuck indeed...maybe it's a timed thing?

The Battle system was mediocre to decent depending on what area of the game you were at. It got way too slow paced and nonstrategic near the end.

The game's real flaw was the storyline (pure shit) and progression structure (thunderous diarrhea). Now Raituning can come back with her kawaii wings in an even shittier game!

Sure, I never claimed the battle system was the worst part of that trainwreck of a game.  I just find it funny how people praise the battle system when it has some serious problems...

In honor of the NGP Uncharted game getting an actual name, here's a thread.

Kotaku has a nice hand's on preview.  They were actually pretty positive about the touch controls, which surprised me.  They're still completely optional, though.

I honestly thought FFXIII's battle system was pretty bad.  Which is funny because that was supposed to be the game's best feature.  It had some interesting ideas, but there were a couple of fundamental flaws:

1.  After completely eliminating MP they needed some way to differentiate between physical and magic attacks.  What they came up with was having them affect the break gauge differently (physical attacks raise it very little but slow the rate it falls while magic attacks raise it a lot but it will fall quickly).  This may sound like added depth, but it's not really.  All it means is that you never want to rely on just one or the other but rather always use a combination.  More importantly, to make the whole break system actually relevant they had to give all the enemies stupidly large amounts of HP.  Otherwise you would just kill them before even getting a break.  This means all battles, even regular encounters, tend to drag on and on and on...

2.  While the idea of changing the behavior of your party members according to different roles is interesting, there just aren't enough options for any real stategic variations.  Once you figure out the winning approach for one battle you will quickly realize that it's the exact same winning approach for every battle.  There is really only one strategy in this game.  And you will use it over and over and over since, as mentioned in point 1, battles tend to get dragged out...

So yeah, lengthy battles that all play out exactly the same.  I'm not sure how that's anyone's idea of fun.

Nobody has mentioned that the store is back up?  I'm downloading the Infamous 2 demo as we speak.

Considering the glorious SNES and Saturn RPGs I played with those you mentioned Jubby,we fell a long way.

Nostalgia is a powerful factor.
2542  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales Series on: June 01, 2011, 05:34:28 PM
The only Tales games I've really played in any depth are Symphonia and Vesperia (which I played entirely in Japanese, PS3 version).  I liked them, though.  I don't know why exactly but the series went under my radar for a long time.  Lately I've had a lot more interest in it.  Looking forward to getting Graces F eventually...maybe I'll do the import thing again with Xillia in the mean time since it seems like that will be out first...

I thought about starting a topic saying exactly what you said, Ramza.  But you beat me to it.

By the way, I've played D&D for years and there actually was an occasion when I rolled 4 natural 1s in a row on a d20.  That's the exact same probability the editorial mentioned.  But if you game enough something like that is bound to happen eventually.  Keep in mind that you're really looking at a much broader category that's "the probability of something unlikely happening that will stick in my head".  Rolling 4 natural 20s would have been remembered just as well, albeit in a different light.  And really it could have been anyone in the group, not just my rolls.

Even so, my bad luck is now legendary in my D&D group...

Who gives a shit what it's called?   I want actual details.  And games!
2545  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: E3 2011 on: May 30, 2011, 12:30:49 PM
Even if Sony spends their entire conference apologizing that doesn't actually make anything better.  A quick apology is fine but frankly I would rather hear about the NGP.

Two new trailers up on andriasang.  Looks nice.
2547  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Nier on: May 29, 2011, 05:14:27 PM
so what is this game i've never heard of till recently?

Is this a joke?  Where have you been for the last year?

Sure, Nier is probably a fairly obscure game on most sites, but we all know you're a regular here and sometimes it feels like Nier is all the RPGFan community talks about.  In addition to this giant thread it has certainly slipped its way into discussions in many other threads.  And how about the multiple reviews RPGFan did or the game of the year awards?
2548  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of PlayStation(s) revealed on: May 29, 2011, 01:56:44 PM
When I saw the price, I kind of changed my mind on that idea.  Are all Japanese tales games that expensive at release?

Yes.  Actually, you can remove the 'tales' part of that question...I've paid around $90 for a regular edition PSP game before.

Part of it is that the exchange rate isn't very favorable right now, but beyond that games are just more expensive in Japan.  Games in the US are cheaper than just about anywhere else, really.
2549  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: inFamous 2 Gameplay Footage on: May 28, 2011, 04:36:42 PM
It sounds like you haven't played the first game, Mickeymac.  Keep in mind that when the PSN store comes back online (whenever that will be...) inFamous is one of the free games Sony is offering for their welcome back thingy.  It would be a good time to pick it up.
