IGN review (first I've seen, they gave it a 9):

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1170808p1.html

Am I the only one who thought this review was pretty terrible?  From a writing standpoint, I mean.  It read like a feature list, and they're all features we've already seen in the previews at that.  There were only a couple brief hints as to how well the stuff actually works in practice.  Furthermore the auther doesn't even address my biggest questions over how well the flaws of the first game (boring repetitive side missions, very little reason to use anything more than your basic attack most of the time, etc.) have been addressed.  In fact the text of the review was so gushing I'm not even sure why the score was a 9 and not a 10...

After reading IGN's review I don't feel like I've learned a single thing that hasn't already been shown in previews.

Going to have to agree with Eusis here.  Rogue Galaxy was stupid and boring.

I don't think its hilarious at all. I know what you mean, it's surreal and absurd, but I don't think it's funny. On top of the labour they are already receiving and depriving them of sleep, beating them if they don't fill some abstract quota, it is terrifying the indifference that humanity can have to the suffering of others.  Prisons are horrible places and while they provide a necessary function, your human rights don't end when you enter one. Though human rights don't really exist, it's just a good philosophy to follow. x.x But I digress.

Yeah, I should clarify.  It's the concept of grinding in an MMORPG for prison labor I find hilarious.  The actual working conditions there sound pretty horrible.  I doubt that's specific to the MMORPG players, however.  Obviously this fits into my earlier statement about the need to treat prison laborers humanely.

Look at the article someone linked on Slashdot from 2000:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/may2000/pris-m08.shtml

«There are presently 80,000 inmates in the US employed in commercial activity, some earning as little as 21 cents an hour.»

That article is really weird.  It keeps going on and on about how the prisoners aren't paid very much, etc.  Uh...they're prisoners.  They're in jail because they committed crimes.  They're lucky to be paid at all.  There are definite positive aspects to prison labor.  For one thing it costs an enormous about of taxpayer money to keep all these people in jail.  Why not have them do something productive while they're at it?  Of course it needs to be done humanely.  Many countries have foced labor camps with truely horrible working conditions and that isn't a good thing.  But that's a little different than bitching about pay and lack of benefits...

Anyway, back to the original topic...that's just hilarious.  A very bizarre use of prison labor...
2541  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Portal 2 on: May 26, 2011, 01:42:56 AM
Aren't you guys being a little harsh?  Akiba's Trip is certainly no Portal 2, but it's not just a fanservice game either.  It has a lot of interesting ideas and a surprisingly serious story.  Most of the complaints I've heard are technical in nature (load times, slowdown when lots of enemies are on screen, etc).  Otherwise the only games that beat Portal 2 are Dead or Alive, some Monster Hunter spinoff thing, and Gungnir.  Dead or Alive is a pretty shitty franchise but it's popular in the west too and people need something to play on their shiny new 3DSs.  Monster Hunter is...Monster Hunter.  I'll never quite understand why, but that franchise is basically Japan's Call of Duty.  Gungnir looks quite good, though.

Does Portal 2 deserve better?  Certainly.  But consider that first-person games in general are not popular in Japan.  And let's see how much staying power it has before jumping to conclusions.

I've been to a lot of conventions and I've never heard of one with a 'no coats' rule...that sounds stupid and random.

i hope we get VC3 :o i have VC2 but havent gotten around to playing it yet.

I do too, but damn, Sega has even hinted at it.  I'll wait until after E3 but if they haven't said anything by then I'm going to import.
2544  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Bioware already working on Dragon Age 3 on: May 22, 2011, 08:46:47 PM
There certainly is a lot of whining in this thread...

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again:  I don't think Dragon Age 2 was a bad game at all.  There were certain elements of it, however, that felt very rushed.  Often inexcusably so.  The constant reuse of environments is probably the most blatent example.  That's just sloppy for a high-profile big-budget game like this.  Which is why I said in the beginning of this thread that I hope they spend more time on Dragon Age 3.
2545  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Sony announces PSP Remasters for the PS3 (M. Hunter P. 3rd for PS3 confirmed!) on: May 22, 2011, 02:25:04 AM
This move seems...weird.  On some level it's pretty neat, but it also feels like a bit of a cash grab.  It doesn't sound like they're talking about old classics but rather pretty recent titles.  But why do this now when the NGP isn't very far off?
2546  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Bioware already working on Dragon Age 3 on: May 21, 2011, 08:29:45 PM
It's not any surprise that they're working on it.  Let's just hope they spend more time on it than they did on DA2.

S-E has been full of disappointmens lately and I keep telling myself not to get my hopes up, but damn Type-0 looks sweet...
2548  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: May 21, 2011, 12:46:55 PM
I've certainly had video game dreams before, but a dream about a game you haven't played yet?  That's a little different...
2549  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: May 21, 2011, 03:44:39 AM
So how is everyone coping with the rapture?
2550  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: May 21, 2011, 02:07:54 AM
My dissertation is probably going to be at least 250 pages...
