Yesterday I went to the dentist (you just know this is going to be an exciting story).  Honestly, I'm really bad about going to the dentist regularly and hadn't been in a few years.  But I'm actually quite good and brushing and flossing so I don't normally have any problems.   But for the last few weeks I've had pain in my lower molars that comes and goes but has been bad enough it sometimes keeps me from sleeping.  Since I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years I figured I should really go...

However the dentist said he couldn't find anything wrong.  No cavities, no gum problems, nothing.  But the pain is still there.  He seemed to think the most likely cause was stress.  I guess when people are stressed they subconsciously clench and grind their teeth, and that can lead to pain like I was describing.

I can't say that I'm not stressed...I'm actually going through a really stressful period.  I'm trying to finish my dissertation, find a job, and basically figure out what the hell I'm doing with my life.  But I never would have expected that the first person to point out I was stressed would be my dentist...

So anyway, dentists know.

I absolutely suck at dispelling.  I just set them all off and take the damage.  Seems to be working out OK so far...

I'm going to have to completely disagree.  While I don't think the Skyrim comparison is perfect by any means, this game is still a lot more like Skyrim than it is like Dragon Age 2.  Dragon Age 2 was a completely narrative and character driven game that focused on telling a story not just in the main quest but also in the relationships with your party members and even in many of the sidequests.  The game suffered (a lot...) from the reuse of dungeon locations, but I actually liked its storytelling.  Most importantly, the NPCs were actually developed and had personalities.

Amalur puts pretty much zero emphasis on characters (to the games loss, I feel).  The people you meet are nothing more than icons on a map who hand out quests.  You really feel like they don't serve any other purpose.  And while it's not quite as open as something like Skyrim, it's still a big open world that feels closer to those sorts of games than it does to Dragon Age...

So I bought the game new, entered the online pass code, downloaded something from it. The DLC section from the main menu is now active, and it says that the House of Valor DLC is 9.99. I thought you got this for free when you did the online pass thing, or is the PSN store just not recognizing the code I used?

Yes, that's the content you get from the pass code.  If you actually downloaded it then it certainly doesn't sound like the code wasn't recognized.  Maybe the store just doesn't recognize that you already have it and so lists it by default.  I'll check on my system later.

For some reason I got Commander Shepard's armor without actually playing the ME3 demo (and I certainly didn't purchase a 'season pass', whatever that is...).  I don't even know why, it just showed up.  That's not supposed to happen, is it?

What happened to Grand Knights History?

Apparently even Xseed doesn't know...not a good sign.

Just get Macaroni & Cheese and use the powder... >_>

That is so wrong...

I'm a cheese snob.  I will happily pay $10/lb for good imported cheeses because it's worth it to me (unfortunately with the exception of a handful of cheddars from some smaller producer American doesn't make any good cheese...).  Heck, the parmigiano-reggiano I buy is like $20/lb.  It's totally worth it, though.  The difference in flavor between that and the cheap stuff is night and day.

So I got around to actually playing the game (and not just admiring the soundtrack and...dice bag) and I just gotta say: damn combat is fun in this game.  The demo didn't give a good taste of things to come both because you didn't really have a large set of abilities and the enemies were so easy t was pretty straightforward.  Well, it's the beginning/tutorial area so what do you expect...

But after spending more time with the real game I'm starting to appreciate the nuances of the combat system.  I'm currently playing a warrior/mage sporting a hammer/chakram combo.  Hammers are massively powerful weapons but they're so slow they can be tricky to use.  Faster enemies can hit you and interupt your attack even if you swung first, sometimes.  But the chakrams make up for those shortcomings quite nicely so learning to use the two together--as well as magic attacks and well-timed blocks--is a lot of fun.

Everybody seems to be comparing this game to Skyrim for some reason so I might as well say that I've never actually enjoyed combat in a Bethesda game.  Sure it's a necessary component because it gives you something to overcome, but it isn't actually fun.  At least not to me.  But in this game I find myself charging towards any red dots I see on my map just because killing things is so enjoyable.

So yeah, there's that aspect, but that doesn't mean the rest of the game falls short.  Far from it.  There are so many quests, so much lore, so many mechanics I haven't even explored yet (like crafting, etc.).  This game just blows me away.
2545  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: PlayStation Vita Announced (Feb 22, $249/$299 for WiFi/3G+WiFI) + some games on: February 07, 2012, 10:06:20 PM

No plan to allow any sort of PSP game play or transfer on Vita.

If you want to play PSP games, buy them again.

This feels like when Sony took BC out of the PS3 just so they could re-sell us PS2 games.

I honestly don't give a shit.

First of all, "If you want to play PSP games, buy them again" is ridiculously untrue, since if you bought your games digitally in the first place they'll work just fine.  It's not like we didn't know this was coming...

Before anyone claims "but Japan got the passport program", the passport program was a complete mess.  The number of titles supported was tiny, the amount of money publishers wanted for them was excessive (sometimes almost as much as just buying the game normally...), and the whole thing seemed broken and ripe for abuse from the start.

Why do people feel entitled to get a second copy (yes, it's a second copy...there's absolutely nothing Sony can do to keep you from selling your UMD version after getting the digital one...) of their games on a different medium?  Can you name any other example of any company anywhere doing that sort of thing?  If you bought a movie on DVD does that entitle you to a discounted blu-ray version?  If you have a big UMD collection you probably have a PSP to play them on...get over it.

Sorry for coming off as hostile...I'm not really ranting at anyone here just ranting at the general attitude I keep seeing on various other sites.  People are acting like the sky is falling when I have a hard time imagining any other outcome...

I got my limited edition box set.  It's so pretty...it's sitting there, tempting me.  I'm supposed to be writing my dissertation, damn it...

Edit: Listening to the soundtrack now.  It's pretty good.

If you check the Xseed forums (well, back when they were up...) they've been very strongly hinting at without actually saying a PC release.  Which I'm honestly kind of bummed about since I don't run Windows...but I know I'm in the minority there.

There's some kind of sporting event coming up?

Additionally (I can't just watch one series at a time...) I watched the first 25 episodes of "The Twelve Kingdoms" and hesitate when I say its the best thing in anime that passed me by in a long time... I abso-freakin'-lutely love it..... I can definately see where it isn't for everone but man... if you like the 90's esque fantasy-fair type stuff this is a must see.

Oh man, The Twelve Kingdoms.  I love that show.  Definitely stick with it.  It's divided into four main story arcs (though the fourth is so short it hardly counts) and they are not all equal...for me it kind of went like this:

Arc 1:  Meh, OK at best.  Seems like generic fantasy stuff.  Some irritating characters.
Arc 2:  Tons of background material for the universe, etc.  Lot's of talking.  I happen to like that sort of stuff, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Needless to say, Arc 3 is why I love this show.  It's so good I can forgive pretty much anything up to that point...the finale might be my favorite moment in any anime ever.  Unfortunately because of the slow beginning I think a lot of people give up on the show before they get there.

At 25 eps in I believe you're just starting to get to the good stuff.  Have fun.  This is one of those shows where I wish I could wipe my memory or something so I could experience it fresh a second time...

Man, I called all the Gamestops in Seattle and nobody is getting any until the 15th :(

What's the deal, neglecting a whole city...

Edit:  Re-reading most post it didn't seem obvious that I was talking about the demo units.  Obviously it launches when it does...
