I mean special boss stuff is special, but you'll spend 75% of the game beating up standard thugs.

That's true for most games but I'm not sure that's actually the case here.  Hard to say without having played the full version, but this is a game that's all about epic boss fights and throwing together different styles of gameplay depending on the circumstances.  I mean heck, the first level is basically a shmup (there was a complete video of it posted not too long ago).  And the boss battles themselves are meaty and involved, with many different parts to them.  The demo only showed pieces of a couple of boss fights, not the whole thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were fighting standard thugs less than 25% of the time...
2627  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: How long do you play an RPG for in one sitting on: January 12, 2012, 03:01:46 AM
I would play games but I'm too busy posting on RPGFan.
2628  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Asura's Wrath on: January 11, 2012, 09:05:05 PM
The demo was really easy...even easier than what I remember playing before at PAX.  Maybe they tuned down the difficulty to make it accessible or something, but it almost seemed like you couldn't fail.  I certainly hope the actual game has some harder options...

I don't really mind QTEs, though.  They're a big part of the game so if you hate them I guess that's that.  Mainly they seem to serve as transitions between different gameplay types.  It's nice to mix things up.
2629  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Knights in the Nightmare on: January 11, 2012, 08:51:22 PM
I tend to like quirky games, but Knights in the Nightmare was too much for me.  So much of the system seems so...arbitrary.  Not just the combat itself (though that has plenty of arbitrary rules too), but all the between battle leveling up and stuff.  I tried but I just couldn't get into it.

I loved Yggdra Union, though.  I actually got Blaze Union too (imported, naturally) but haven't had time to play it...
2630  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Megaman X! On iOS. on: January 11, 2012, 01:11:19 AM
The rage of watching that knows no words.

That's a little baffling...

Yeah, it's a shitty port.  It looks like they completely phoned it in.  So don't buy it and move on with your life.  Doesn't seem worth the effort of bitching about.

Heck, given how Megaman on a touch screen seems like an inherently bad idea to me I think I would be more offended if they actually wasted resources on this trash.

Since this has turned into a Capcom bash-a-thon, I might as well point out that I think Asura's Wrath looks really good.  What I played of it at PAX was super fun.  Isn't there supposed to be a demo out soon?

Gumby freaks me the fuck out. Does Gumby freak anyone else the fuck out?

Yes.  I swear that shit gave me nightmares when I was a kid...
2633  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan's Games of the Year 2011 Thread on: January 08, 2012, 02:39:56 PM
Honestly I think Deus Ex: HR was my game of the year, though I get why not everyone digged it as much as I did.  Of course I haven't actually played The Witcher 2...

Trails in the Sky would probably be my runner up.

I did a follow-up post where I graphed the 3DS and Vita launch-period sales.  I like making graphs.

Supporting old hardware is nice and all, but I think in this case it goes beyond that.  In Japan the only good-looking post-launch Vita title is Gravity Daze and that might be too obscure to be a system-seller (though it looks like a great game).  Meanwhile the PSP is being flooded with titles.  I can't really blame the Japanese gamers for sticking with their PSPs.

I'm surprised nobody is talking about the abysmal Vita sales...third week sales are in and they're even worse than the second week.  Only 42,000 units for new hardware is...awful.

Some dork named Kevadu wrote this analysis about why.
2636  Media / Miscellaneous Games / New X-COM game that's (*gasp*) a strategy game! on: January 05, 2012, 12:46:40 PM
From Firaxis, even!

I guess somebody heard all the complaints about the FPS.  I gotta say, I'm excited.  If anyone can do this right it's Firaxis.
2637  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: smell ya later, 2011. smell ya later forever on: January 04, 2012, 11:16:37 PM
My 2011 was so phenomenally uneventful that I have a hard time describing it as good or bad.  It just was.
2638  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Games You'd Like To Give Another Chance And Why? on: January 01, 2012, 12:42:16 AM
Wait!? Which one was the one that had the sucky combat?

Seeing as it's the only thing FFXIII did right at all gameplay-wise I'd say LoD.

And yet the combat in Final Fantasy XIII was the thing I disliked the most.:P

Agreed.  It was fundamentally poorly designed.  No depth, the same basic strategy worked for pretty much every battle, and soon battles became nothing but an exercise in tedium simply because of how many HP the enemies had (which is itself a design flaw born out of the desire to make break relevant even for regular enemies).

I don't know why people praise FFXIII's combat.  It's novel, I guess, until you spend more than 10 minutes with it and realize how shallow it is.

SOPA sounds good on paper

Say what?  Have you read SOPA?  There's nothing remotely good about it.  And I'm saying that as somebody who doesn't pirate and despises pirates.

That said, singling out Sony here is somewhat...bizarre.  A lot of companies have expressed support for SOPA.  Sony isn't even the main proponent or anything.
2640  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Next "Trails" game announced for PSP on: December 27, 2011, 11:23:59 PM
Fixed, because I've had no luck finding any XSeeD games after their release date. At least phone ports are more than likely digitally released.

Trails in the Sky is in stock on Amazon right now.  In fact, Amazon has had lightning deals on Xseed PSP games like half a dozen times in the last year.  They don't do lightning deals on out-of-stock items, they do them on items that aren't selling and they're trying to get rid of their stock of...

Yeah, these games can be hard to find in your local Gamestop (because they barely stock any in the first place), but did you even look online?

Edit: Going back on topic: "On Twitter, XSEED Games has mentioned to curious fans that no, they're not actually involved."

Boo.  That just killed my enthusiasm.
