2626  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: March 30, 2012, 02:48:07 AM
Working on my dissertation.  Writing, writing writing...all I've been doing lately is writing.  I barely even leave my apartment these days except to get food.  I just wake up and write, break for food, write some more, repeat.  I'm going stir-crazy and feel mentally exhausted.

I think I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, though.  Little by little this thing is starting to come together...back to writing.

Did you ever watch My Otome? That's like My Hime, but done better.

...wait what? Granted it's been a long while since I have seen it; but I recall Otome being slightly lower caliber than Hime. It basically takes the cast, flanderizes them, and then slaps a less cohesive plot just to slide in a mildly higher level of fanservice compared to it's original.

If memory serves it was pretty much directed at a different audience as it just came off as goofy and lighthearted; a drastic alteration from the melodrama of the original (which I personally prefer).

Edit: Quick glance at TVTropes pretty much confirms my memory hasn't failed me yet. 'Lighter and Softer', 'Hotter and Sexier', and probably a scene that deducted major points in my book 'Naughty Tentacles'.

Agreed.  My Otome was...weird.  It felt like the My Hime characters were doing a play or something.  I didn't think My Hime was particularly great or anything, but I liked it a whole lot more than My Otome.

Spice and Wolf (been meaning to watch it for nearly a year now, give or take)

^^^^^^ love it, love it, love it

One of my all-time favorites.

If NISA games are niche; Sword Girls is niche-niche. So...I'd hate to be working at NISA's PR department tomorrow. XP

Maybe niche fans are less insane than niche-niche fans?

What needed censoring?  I haven't been watching the game.

I refer to my previous post.

Well Double Fine got something like 3 million for an adventure game, so I don't agree that half a million seems high.

In addition to what others have said, keep in mind that the Double Fine thing was for developing a completely new game.  This is just localization!  The game is already done.  Half a million does seem like an awful lot for localization...

I can't get over the fact enemies don't respawn tho. Whenever I start a new RPG I like to go out and grind at first, build up some money and stock up on stuff. If enemies don't respawn it feels like I am restricted in a few ways. I couldn't get into ME games, but again, I'm going to give Bioware a fair chance, their games get such high praise they are hard to overlook. If this no-respawn hurts the Dragon Age experience I'm gonna be very very catious before ever buying another Bioware game. So far the Elder Scrolls and Blizzard games have surpassed Bioware in my opinion by far ( not to get into other companies). Enemies respawning seems like a pretty basic feature for an RPG to have...

(~_~;)

You've got to be the first person I've ever heard claim that grinding is a feature...

DA:O is designed so that you don't have to grind.  If you just want to build up your party there are always interesting sidequests and stuff, which is far more enjoyable (for me, anyway...) than just walking back and forth fighting the same enemies over and over...but if you really want to grind you can always try walking between locations on the world map.  There's always the chance of a random encounter there (yes, some are scripted but there are random ones too).

I saw a lot of people getting excited about this over at Siliconera, so I guess somebody likes this series.  Personally, I'm with Dice on this one: There are so many overlooked and better games out there...

Dear Japanese developers. Let the PSP die already.

I like my PSP.

It helps if you learn Japanese...

I don't know anything that closes for Good Friday...

So I just watched the first two eps of the Black Rock Shooter anime.  It's finally streaming on Funimation's site (yeah, I know there are fansubs floating around...I wanted a legit version).

It's, uh...not very good.  I'll grant it that it has great animation in the dream sequence fight scenes...and I like that they used the song.  But that's about it for the pros.  For the cons...we have such a vapid, uninteresting protagonist that I was struggling to stay awake.  Blah.

They had better put this costume in the US version.  It's the only one I care about...

Evangelion was dumb and it bored me.  But I don't think I actually care about it enough to hate it.
2637  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of Graces F on: March 20, 2012, 07:55:33 PM
I just read IGN's nonreview and it really makes me think about how Tales games (and JRPGs in general) are perceived by the mainstream gaming community.  IGN has always been an unapologetically business-oriented website.  Love them or hate them, they've never tried to hide the fact that they deliberately tailor their content to the things that get the most page hits.  Clearly Tales of Graces f is not one of those things...

I call their treatment of Graces f a "nonreview" for reasons that should be obvious if you read it.  Basically, the author did not finish the game so he neglected to give a score (I can at least respect him for owning up to that), but also wrote barely anything about the game at all.  Despite the fact that what little he wrote about the game was actually quite positive he still could not be bothered to finish it.  And this is not standard operating procedure for IGN (in fact, I can't even think of another example off hand...).  Now sure, it's not exactly a short game, but there are still much longer games that have been gotten full reviews weeks ahead of their release, instead of this half-assed approach as week after release.

Since IGN is about as mainstream as it gets in this industry, I think that says a lot about how mainstream gamers look at JRPGs.  There's all this talk about how JRPGs are dying, but when great games come out on unpopular platforms like the PSP they're often ignored entirely.  And apparently even when they arrive on a popular platform this is the most enthusiasm that can be mustered.  It's really kind of sad.

But there is also something very wrong about this whole approach to journalism.  By deliberately focusing on content that gets page hits they end up rehashing the same few popular franchises over and over.  Reviews, at least, should be an opportunity to alert readers to good games they might not have considered otherwise.  Assuming that they're fair reviews, anyway.  But this whole it's-not-popular-so-we're-not-even-going-to-review-it thing is kind of shocking, honestly.  What purpose do these sites even serve then?  Are they just places to pick up tidbits to be used in the latest CoD vs. Battlefield flamewar?

I'm clearly going off-topic so I'll stop now...

People keep talking about some kind of heat wave.  It's been highs in the 40s here for the last week...
2639  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Black Rock Shooter: The Game on: March 19, 2012, 06:20:56 PM
I guess there wasn't actually a dedicated thread for this...it's certainly been discussed in other threads.

Yeah, I'm interested in the game.  I am starting to wonder if it's ever actually getting a release though.
2640  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Conception (Spike PSP Rpg) on: March 19, 2012, 06:19:57 PM
It's a really weird idea, but it doesn't sound like a raunchy game. I'll keep an eye out for a prospective localization of this.

Won't happen. The hero's cousin is pregnant and under 18.

It's also a PSP game...
