Anyone interested in some beta'ing tonight?  I'm Kevadu on PSN as well so feel free to add me (just say you're from RPGFan so I know who it is...).

Yeah, my connection is quite fast.  I stream HD video without any perceptible buffering.
2628  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Journey - thatgamecompany's new title on: June 28, 2011, 01:04:36 PM
I don't play games online. Never have. Even if I wanted to, I'm pretty sure my dsl connection isn't fast enough.

Er, if you have DSL I'm sure it's fine.  It's not like you're on dial-up or something (though I did online gaming via dial-up back in the day...).  It's more latency sensitive than bandwidth sensitive anyway.
2629  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Have you ever returned a game you bought? If so, which game was it? on: June 27, 2011, 03:17:17 PM
Read my post again. Do you see me judging the game itself anywhere? The fact that I never opened it in the end just makes me wish I hadn't bothered buying it to begin with. I had good intentions of playing it, obviously. I simply never did and eventually didn't care enough to.

Well, it's not too late to play it now! ;)

I don't know, I have games still in the shrinkwrap myself but I continue to hold on to the delusion that one day I will find time to play them...
2630  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Have you ever returned a game you bought? If so, which game was it? on: June 27, 2011, 02:52:47 PM
No, but some I wished I had. I never could get into Drakengard, and I bought the collector's edition of FFXII and never opened it.

Never opened it?  I know FFXII is a divisive game, but how can you judge it without playing?
2631  The Rest / General Discussions / Supreme Court rules that video games are protected speech on: June 27, 2011, 12:46:45 PM
Joystiq's take

7-2 decision.  While I was always fairly confident that they would make the right decision it is nice to see common sense prevail.  The dissenting opinion was more about how free speech applies to minors than whether or not video games shoudl be protected speech.

And yet you're completely ignoring Xseed.  cj_iwakura had a point.  They deserve some credit.

Amazon seems to be doing lightning deals on Xseed PSP games today.  Mostly Falcom stuff.  The TitS special edition deal is expired already but there are still a few to come.

Too bad I already have all of those games...
2634  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Art of Quests on: June 23, 2011, 05:17:41 PM
At their most basic level, I don't think much room exists for innovation in quests.

I don't think I could disagree more.  Just because a lot of game developers don't have much innovation in their quests doesn't mean that it can't be done.  I will pretty much echo Eusis's sentiments here, but the best quests are one that have some actual depth to them.  They don't have to be world-changing events (in fact they probably shouldn't be, they are side material after all), but that doesn't mean they can't have well-developed characters and occasional twists and turns.  Bioware sometimes gets this right, but certainly not always.

But yeah, there's nothing more boring than 'collect n units of material A' or 'kill monster X'.  Developers put those sort of quests in because it's easy to do and considered safe and reliable.

Actually, I'm going to contradict myself for a second and note that the hunts in FFXII were an example of 'kill monster X' quests that I really enjoyed.  But that was because there was often some research and planning involved in even finding said monsters and sometimes you also needed special tactics to be able to take them out.  Furthermore, if you do enough of thoses quests you should know that there actually were some unexpected twists and turns.  So yeah, I guess even that sort of quest can be done well.  Rarely is, though.

A side comment, but one thing I find really makes me more likely to engage in sidequests is some sort of in-game quest log.  More and more games do this sort of thing now, but still not all of them.  But it's really helpful for games that you're not necessarily playing all the time.
2635  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Do gamers see time differently? on: June 23, 2011, 02:29:07 PM
No, that's completely silly.  Tons of things require years of waiting.
2636  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: WRPG virgin no more! on: June 22, 2011, 05:00:51 PM
Since we were on the subject of character design in western games, I thought this article was appropriate (and amusing).

They really are all the same...

These games are crazy addictive.

Damn it, even though you told me that I saw that there was a free 'lite' verion of Grand Prix Story so I fgured what they hey, I'll see what it's all about...right before I was going to go to bed.  It's now 3:15am and I've played through everything in that lite version...
2638  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: lol e3....... on: June 22, 2011, 04:20:06 AM
it does seem rather cheap.  I mean, even consumer-focused events like PAX cost way more than that.  And you still have to buy your tickets months ahead of time because they sell out.  I guess TGS does have the advantage of more space...
2639  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: WRPG virgin no more! on: June 21, 2011, 10:24:31 PM
Finally, a JRPG-style game with manliness!
2640  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Xenoblade + The Last Story on: June 21, 2011, 10:10:22 PM
I don't have a Wii, but I might import a European Wii for precisely this reason.  Seems like a ridiculous thing to do, but why not?  If I find other games on the platform that interest me I suppose I could get European versions of those too...
