2. There is absolutely no correlation between the Editor's Choice award and a game's "mainstream appeal." We all love RPGs here. Nobody cares if they're niche or mainstream, we just care if they're good. Conception II is not that good.

You can't say nobody does cause the Gungnir reviewer clearly passed on giving out the Editor's Choice due to lack of mainstream appeal.  I understand it's not in the official blurb about Editor's Choice Award on the site but I remembered this one cause I asked about it.

Hmm. I stand corrected-- it seems like Ashton did refrain from giving an EC award to Gungnir for that reason, but his perspective does not represent the whole staff, nor does his reasoning fall in line with some kind of "rule" we have about which games we give EC to. The award is something left up to each reviewer's discretion. I've been reviewing here for four years, and I've only ever given it out three times: to Persona 4 Golden, FFXIV: ARR, and SMTIV. I certainly wouldn't say that SMTIV caters to a "mainstream" audience, for example, but it's definitely more accessible than past entries in the series.

Anyway, this is veering off topic, but it sounds like most of the people in this thread can corroborate that the gameplay mechanics in Conception II are pretty dull. Like I stated several times in the review, I didn't find the game's humor to be offensive, but it is excessively singular to the point where it becomes obsessive and unfunny. I am absolutely not prudish by any stretch of the imagination, haha.

1. Consider that reviews are written by different people with different tastes.

3. Conception II's in-engine graphics are pretty damn ugly. I'd argue that Bravely Default looks significantly better, despite its intentionally low-fidelity style. That one's a matter of taste, I suppose.

I'm never going to be able to escape Dark Souls, am I?

I'm not sure what we were discussing, but it was probably Stephen. He's not a fan of the series, which I can respect. :) They're pretty grindy and tend to not change a lot from game to game. I enjoy them, though (especially VIII)!
23  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC Announced for Steam/PSP on: September 06, 2013, 08:17:42 PM
I just pawned my psp off because nothing has come out in 2 years that I have wanted to play besides tactics ogre. Fuck xseed for being so damn slow with an announcement.

There are many reasons why the announcement took so long, the largest of which being that this localization is one of the biggest in industry history. It wasn't an intentional "let's keep them in the dark" kind of thing. There's a lot of good information at Carpe Fulgur's blog: http://www.carpefulgur.com/drakblog/

Thankfully, you can get both FC & SC on Steam, so as long as you have a low-to-mid range PC, you'll be good to go. :)

I'm so excited about this, I could explode. I will absolutely be buying both versions of SC, as well as the Steam version of FC when it releases later this year. Carpe Fulgur and XSEED are makin' those dreams come true.

This is a good opportunity to shamelessly self-promote, so I will: remember that Tom Lipschultz of XSEED will be on the next episode of Rhythm Encounter, which features nothing but Falcom music, including Kiseki stuff. The episode will be up in the coming days, so please keep an eye/ear out! :)

Just wanted to echo Stephen and Rob's sentiments-- thank you guys for listening and having kind words for us. It's the best "reward" we could ask for. :)

...aside from reviews on iTunes. <3

Blues,

Wow. So many detailed comments... I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see them. My replies will be far less descriptive, but:

5 - Yes, Casey is both smart and sexy. Err, what? Seriously, though, Ivalice has so much richness in its musical score and history. I can't get enough of that world. I'm surprised you feel so favorably after your experiences with ass-kicking chocobos... ;D

6 - Yay for Chrono Cross, and I'm super glad you liked the track from Nayuta no Kiseki. We're actually playing another track from it on the next episode, too!

7 - This episode was a blast. Vacant Interference is, in fact, the bee's knees (almost as much as Mint Chocolate Chip). I got so include so many Falcom tracks, haha. But not as many as the upcoming episode...!

8 - Aivi's humility really is endearing, isn't it? Speaking with her was such a joy.

9 - I, too, was a bit apprehensive going into this episode, but there really are many great examples of WRPG music-- you just have to dig a little for them.

Thank you so much for listening! 次のエピソド、お楽しみに!

There's a giant headline on our front page with this information. :)

If you care about Falcom/Ys music and history, please check out the next episode of Rhythm Encounter when it debuts later this week! Tom is so knowledgeable it's almost ridiculous.

Our new MMORPG editor Brian wrote up a nice little preview for the game ahead of this weekend's open Beta.

So would Etrian Odyssey be the Dark Souls of the 1st person dungeon crawl RPG?  (You don't have to answer that)

Yo Derek, I created a new post under Miscellaneous Games for a fan-made Megaman game I found this weekend.  It's really solid if you're looking for a good ole Megaman experience that challenges the crap out of you.

This post is the Dark Souls of the RPGFan boards.

Actually, speaking of the "Dark Souls of..." idea, Mega Man Unlimited is pretty evil! I managed to beat Jet Man and Yo-yo Man in version 1.0, and I got to a couple of other bosses but couldn't take 'em out. I should probably download the patched version with extra checkpoints and save myself the headache, haha. Even though I already knew about it, I really appreciate you taking the time to make the recommendation to me! :)
