6181  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on: November 29, 2011, 11:34:47 AM
I prefer Zelda games to be less rigid (or at least less rigid FEELING) but Skyward Sword's just different enough, and addresses other issues I had before anyway. I don't feel as roped along by a narrative as I did in Twilight Princess, and the alternatives to the bug hunts ARE much better. Wind Waker is still my favorite 3D Zelda, but maybe that'll change if I replay it.

While I like WW, especially the exploration aspect of it all, I have one MAJOR gripe with it:
This game is a pain in the ass TOO often.  It sucks that the "first dungeon" (the Forsaken Fortress) has you swordless for 95% of it, and proactively avoiding enemies at risk of jail time (only to beat a few enemies with sticks) ...it's also visited twice.  That was weak.  Then there's two dungeons you gotta babysit some NPC around.  Using their powers is fun and all, but this game leaves you with enough to do.  Then there's those islands you gotta get, I think, the fire and ice arrows, and you're timed to do, and it's pretty close too.  I find the item responsiveness kinda sucks too, the grappling hook is a weak first weapon to boot.  Not to sound too much like a wuss, but the bosses are (both for better or worst) some of the hardest in a 3D Zelda.  Which is cool when you have a save point outside like in Skyward Sword, but damn it sucks when you gotta march through a dungeon again.  And while I said I *do* love the exploration aspect (and I also love playing treasure hunter), but changing the wind direction to get anywhere sucks.

Nevertheless, it's nice to see an extremely complex world in Skyward Sword.  Hyrule is full of secrets and puzzles to work out, probably the most since Majora's Mask made you do pre-temple work.

wut?

Rather this than picking what mini-skirt for Serah to wear. :D
(I think I speak alone on that with a mostly male forum haha)

Revenge is sweet.  But, yikes, it's scary.

The camping trip episode was funny but it scarred me much deeper than the game.Particularly the curry cooking part.Ugghh

I hate that running-gag in Japan.  If someone is that bad a cook, they may as well be shot.  It's everywhere too; each anime has an amazing cook, and the one who cooks toxic-bacterial waste.

Watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica this weekend. I enjoyed it, to be sure, but I feel like I was over-hyped on it. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been told it was the best thing since sliced bread. I guess if I were a bigger fan of the Magical Girl genre the deconstruction of said genre would be more poignant, but to be honest aside from being a fan of Sailor Moon when I was like 6, I've not really watched much else. Still, the juxtaposition of art style and tone was striking, and very enjoyable, and the show itself was beautiful to watch. Definitely worth the time I spent watching it, but as I said... I wish people hadn't hyped it up to me quite so much; I went in with some unrealistic expectations.

I was happy, that with everything you watch in that show, and given the writer's previous work (see: Saya no Uta), the show didn't end of a down note.

I thought, especially the opening, the show made fun of the genre and challenged the sunshine, flowers and rainbows approach they usually have.

Give gamers a Final Fantasy 6-style ensemble cast again.  Let me see an Alyx Vance or a April Ryan star in a JRPG. Let's see some Portal 2/Valve level writing in JRPGs. It sure as hell won't hurt them.

Now *that* would be nice.

FF13 folk's are walking emotions.

Lightning = Brooding
Fang = DOWN UNDA
Vanille = TEE HEE
Snow = Tenacity
Serah = Hope
Hope = Pussy

Please don't fuck this game up, Squeenix... you got a big enough grave you've dug already.

EDIT: A nuance; but does anyone get annoyed with the ages of some of these characters?  FFX and XIII made characters look a lot older than they are, IMO.  Wakka is 24 when he looks 30-something.  Hell, even Lightning looks 5 years older than she actually is; she looks late-20's than early 20's...

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Piano Arrange CD, Nov 24

At the bottom of the cover it also says that it includes a special deco seal as well as the score of the game. Maybe this prompts a change to "Fan Book" as well - as written in the top right corner of the cover.

Edit: Oh, and it includes a double-sided poster, too.

I'm still at that point where I wouldn't be able to recognize many of the songs... of course, it doesn't help that the game cranks up SFX of Link yelling and fighting while it puts the music super quiet. >=/

LoZ: Skyward Sword

Wow.  For a dungeon, the Ancient Cistern is exceptionally lovely looking for most of it.  I like the Buddhist Temple look, and it's nice to see "daylight" in a dungeon.  The mid boss sucked.  I'm horrible at this game, I think.  And some of the 1:1 response is giving me issues... Sometimes I hit for one angle and I get another...  anyways, I bombed the asshole to death.  Tulta munille!!!! literally!  Love it.

So, thoughts?

I think I'm at the half way point.  So lessee...

- I love it the more I play.  Being honest, I wasn't too keen at first, and getting used to the controls was half of the battle.  But it's grown a helluva lot on me.
- Lanayru was the coolest place to visit.  And probably the most interesting land to visit in a long-ass time in the series.
- The bosses haven't been TOO challenging yet.  Probably the big fault of the Zelda series: if you know what to expect, it's easy (TP's final slew of bosses, the second time I fought them, I think I lost ....3 hearts...maybe).  The Scorpion was super duper easy.
- I still fuck up between holding the Item button down to bring it up and just hitting it once.  More option, hell, ANY options would have been nice.
- The Goron is adorable
- Groose is awesome
- Batreaux is funny
- Harp playing is kinda crappy (Fi pulls a weird face when she sings too: =O )
- Repairing your shield is a pain in the ass, I'm not keen on the whole shield thing.
- As cool as Fi is, she's just not nearly as awesome a companion compared to Midna... I think it's awesomel and weird that for the first time, Link's travelling buddy is the same size as him.
- I'm on the fence about the stamina gauge.  I don't know if I like it better than constantly hearing "YA" and "EEAAGH" because I rolled around everywhere.  But the normal walk-run can be a bit slow.
- The dungeons are probably the shortest the series has ever seen, but they're extremely well crafted.  Heck...The whole game is.  I'm really happy

^By the way, what did you choose to do with the letter?

I gave it to Karane so she and Pipit had "their ending".  When you do the toilet paper for the letter.... well, I saw a friend do that... it was weird. =/

You see a ghost hand consoling Cawlin...
Why are the peeps in toilets in Zelda so damned weird?!  Haha

6195  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ninokuni (Ghibli + Level 5 RPG) going PS3 on: November 26, 2011, 02:16:54 AM

I find Ghibli overrated, and I have some faith in Level-5.... BUT, I do have faith in this to be a good game despite my shit talking.

I rarely hear that about Ghibli. RARELY. Ghibli movies are about the only Japanese anime I can stomach. Visuals and storylines unlike anything I've ever seen.

Depends.  I find Princess Mononoke are work of art.  I thought Ponyo sucked garbage other than when Ponyo was being cute.  I found Spirit Away bi-polar; some of it was absolutely fascinating, some of it was too dull for too long (everything before the spirit world, watching her train ride).  One thing I hate are the "director's trademarks" that have become all too bizarre... Ghibli seems to love "ooze" for some reason (Mononoke, Howl, and Spirited), there's usually some scene of character gorging on food that I watched for no apparent reason, and I got really annoyed seeing Yubaba [sp?] and the Old Sofie looking damn near like the same old lady.

I'm not a Miyazaki fan as much as I take each title for what it's worth on its own.

Myes, you can throw the tomatoes at me now. =/
