It technically is... but well... *shrug*.

Just read the Grimoire Nier when you're done.  My first read = Mind blown.
Nier is like ten bucks these days too, so yippee!

Aeo summarized the "legacy" pretty nicely:

...that's not the real reason why Drakengard 1 is so memorable. No. Its the fact that both the narrative and the ascetics grow more and more grimdark/crazy until it hits full on batshit insanity. Its entirely a game about increasingly bad shit happening to bad people while everyone becomes more and more fucked over. In a way, it turns most JRPG plots onto their sides, since, as often happens in video games, the world starts off peaceful but grows ever more dangerous as the events in the game goes on, but with the caveat that unlike in those games, the hero doesn't magically save the day by beating the big bad, and in fact, doing so just makes matters worse.
.

Like I said earlier too; literally the "nicest" things in these games is the first two or so chapters, everything after gets dark, creepy, and various shades of disturbing.  In that, it's unique, it's hardly a tale of "hope" like most RPGs try to pass along; sometimes even your best efforts aren't rewarded.  Essentially, it's like looking at something gross: it's disturbing, but you can't look away.  NieR had a similar effect: but it was more of just a well told and sad story.  And I know I'm just repeating myself by this point, but the idea of making pacts with all your favorite mythological or fairy tale monsters in exchange for something you value is just cool (becoming awesome at the cost of something just feels more real than super-anime-magic-powers I guess), and the game has hack-n-slash elements that's a lot like Wednesday Addam's wonderfully bloody play.

Ten ways to escape an awkward situation.  brilliant!

You say stuff that says nothing.  What is your point, man!?

If it helps, I had fun with it.  I had more fun with the story though. :D

I'm just teasing. It just bums me out when I see one of the few games this gen that had a real spark of originality get dissed. :/

Lardy, have you seen how many posts I've made here?
I'm with you, just not about the gameplay.  Twi sides of the same coin, buddy

Nier was hardly a standout in gameplay unless you count its fun use of ripping-off other gaming genres

Don't make me hurt you.

*groan*  It certainly wasn't too thrilling.  The bullet hell was kinda cool -- if you like bullet hell (another way to see it is really lazy attack patterns).  But the game obviously made a point to [at least] parody Zelda.  I'm not saying it was bad, but it wasn't exactly original, and it's been done better.

ANYWAYS.  I'm guessing I'm not the only one who noticed that the chicka with the flower in her eye looks exactly like (or very similar to) Kainés.

...I wonder if Evans is coming back to sing a bit.

Three cheers to Dice. Nier has certainly proven to be the most overrated of the RPG waters I've tasted because of this lot.

It was enjoyable enough; but it's one of those rare cases where Cavia was just a better storyteller than gameplay designer (aside from a few unique elements -- and by god, I loved levelling up weapons for the stupid-awesome stories).  Lard apparently begs to differ, of course.

But I'm not too sure what you were going in expecting; the praise was more geared to story and world and characters -- and you're not exactly the biggest JRPG-pundit going around here.... but I like you for your personality and great taste in art and sometimes music! :D

I will kill you slowly and then dance about on your grave.

I loved Drakengard 1 a 2's first cutscene....because, y'know...shit is still "normal" then.

The Drakengard games have a lot of potential though, I love the mythology and world, and while I don't wonder if they'll "lighten up" (mind you, I can do without the giant cannibal babies), they obviously can't hit the same plot a third time (the seals, the red sky, etc.) -- so I just wonder what the plan is.
Either way, their poor world just can't catch a fucking break.  I'm already sure the third game is just gonna end with blowing up the world so no one else has to deal with anymore shit (yeah, it's that bad, read on at the Tropes site).

Also, a Nier sequel I don't think /can/ be in the cards any more than maybe another reference in Drakengard
Code:
IIRC, the end of Nier basically indicates that humans *will* die out, and your daughter isn't really cured, and in one of the endings you don't even exist anymore.
Even still, I wonder what the series will be like *without* Cavia.  Quite frankly, the only thing they really had going in Nier was the talent that's just been announced for Drakengard3 (the composer, artist, and director/writer combo); Nier was hardly a standout in gameplay unless you count its fun use of ripping-off other gaming genres (from Zelda to Diabo's 3/4 perspective in maze dungeons, to even bullet hell segments) and kinda fun spread of spells at your disposal.  I'm actually optimistic and hoping for better gameplay this time around; with all due respect to [the now defunct] Cavia, they really didn't have a good grasp of how to make a game that was all that fun to play.

...anyways, I also liked Drakengard II; thought it was pretty cool.  Urick bumps it half a letter grade.

EDIT:  Now having played Nier, Ending E in Drakengard is pretty cool.

Scans.  Flower out of the eye.  Sounds painful. D:

God I love Fujisaki's weapon designs.  They look like you could ...kill...things with 'em (I'm out of wit/creative commentary).

omgomgomg!!!  YES!!!

It's nice that they're not just "reviving" an old title, bur "coming back" for it.  I hope it can be good, I'm excited and I've seen dick all.
6191  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Surprise! Drakengard 3 on: March 12, 2013, 07:45:55 PM
It would be smart to get him back... All the series *really* needed was a revamp of gameplay.

This is great:

(Though I have no idea why the video description calls it a prank...it's not a prank, it's science!)

Bonus round, Smeagol sings Mad World:

Loved the tire bit, my dad and I had a good chuckle over it. x)

I like both versions of Mad World for effectively using two different tempos and moods.
I like sitting and listening to Gary's version more, but I love signing the Tears for Fears version aloud more.
6193  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Drakengard 3 (aka; how to damn "nier" lose your shit about old title) on: March 12, 2013, 06:53:11 PM

Who the fuck saw this happening??

Good?  There's a lot of potential with the series (the idea of forming pacts is wonderful, IMO).

Few things:
= Sad it's not Cavia...meaning: gameplay *could* get better, but I doubt story will be unless they get the same depressing sadist to write it *CHECK!!! (Director!)
= PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND FOOD; BRING BACK SAME COMPOSER FROM NIER :DDDDDDD *CHECK!!! (Composer!)
= I hope the same artist is back...shit, I'll have to buy another artbook then. D:  Drakengard2 is one of the best I have *CHECK!!! (Artist!)
= Weird singing bard concept... reminds me of one of the sword level up stories though:

Quote
Level 1.
   What has happened to me?
Every time I wield this sword -
every time I see blood pour
   out of my victim’s neck – I’m
   overwhelmed with unspeakable
   joy.

   Level 2.
   Crimson blood paints the street
red. It stains my pale body scarlet.
Its vivid hue is burned into my
eyes and won’t leave my mind...
   Blood, blood, blood, blood.

   Level 3.
The blood gushes out with a happy
   splash!

When it’s all gone, I’m sad, so I find
new flesh and tear it up! It’s best
when it’s warm, but I like it cold too!

When it’s dry, it’s not so red, which
isn’t much fun, but it’s still blood,
so I still like it very, very much!
   Blood, blood, blood, blood !

   Level 4.
   BlOody, bLoOdY, BLooDY, bLOod!!
   CRiMsOn BLOOD!! BLoODy RED!!
   ReD, CrImSOn, SCaRLeT!!!

999 is a good game played before your go to bed, to scare you a little (I beat the True Ending at like 4 AM, tired as hell... I was frightened by all the nasty plot twists and mind-fuckeries)

I got Atelier Ayesha!  I played it for an hour because I have no other time to spare.
I'm glad the graphics have become so awesome for the series, but they still have some trouble with backgrounds.  Nevertheless, yay!

Dice- I like the term "coochie sponge."  I might start using it; hopefully people won't confuse it for the contraceptive sponge from back in the day.

Haha glad you like it.  i feel even "tampon" is "TMI" these days...
