I just received a call from someone I know.
A close friend of mine died. He felt sick and fell in a comma when he got to the hospital. His organs failed him in less than a couple of hours and they unplugged him.
He was 32...

I'm so sorry.  Whether I know them or not, I hate when I hear about young people passing away.

6258  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Round 5: Secret of Mana vs Kingdom Hearts on: March 13, 2013, 09:16:48 PM
I'd still say they're kinda different, but I'l play along.

Co-op: Secret (well, KH had none, but co-op is awesome)
Magic: Secret (first KH sucked for this, I prefer the roulette in BOTH Secret and future-KH's than going into a menu while you're fighting)
Battling: Kingdom (honestly, the weapon recharge thing in Secret of Mana sucked donkey dick)
Music: Secret (mainly because listening to some KH songs were just a musical portion turned instrumental for the whole stage *groan*; the "made for Kingdom Hearts" tracks [ie; not Disney-related] were great though)
Characters:  Kingdom, oddly.  Even if they are pretentious anime riddles where like half the cast has issues of mistaken identity or some shit.  Secret of Mana was kinda boring for this, but SeikenDen 3 was a vast improvement (dunno if we're getting into that here though)

^Being excited for Drakengard is pretty weird, that's why I said in my previous that I was shocked to see so many people excited over this.

Our NieR thread did really well for an odd release like this (i.e.; where gameplay wasn't the selling point of "a game").

Horror stories are usually about stuff like that or even skipping "spoken" dialogue which leaves you out of a percent.

... Hm, I kinda like the idea of endings based on % completion than specific event-requirements.
6262  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Surprise! Drakengard 3 on: March 13, 2013, 03:03:49 PM
Yeah, me neither actually.  THe only trouble I have with controls with most games though is camera being "inverse" or not.  At the very least, I find I get use to most game controls even if they start as wonky.

Also, I should add.  I think the BIGGER excitement in this is the return of the reputable staff, because being excited for Drakengard is sort of...an odd thing[?].

Maybe Parn is willing to give his copy away for free, Fadedsun. :P
But yeah, NieR is strictly about it's world, music, and story before I'd argue it's about its gameplay.

Maaaaaaaan, play your game without a guide like a real man. Don't give in to being a cheater.

Not when the 100% requirements are nothing short of ridiculous.

It technically is... but well... *shrug*.

Just read the Grimoire Nier when you're done.  My first read = Mind blown.
Nier is like ten bucks these days too, so yippee!

Aeo summarized the "legacy" pretty nicely:

...that's not the real reason why Drakengard 1 is so memorable. No. Its the fact that both the narrative and the ascetics grow more and more grimdark/crazy until it hits full on batshit insanity. Its entirely a game about increasingly bad shit happening to bad people while everyone becomes more and more fucked over. In a way, it turns most JRPG plots onto their sides, since, as often happens in video games, the world starts off peaceful but grows ever more dangerous as the events in the game goes on, but with the caveat that unlike in those games, the hero doesn't magically save the day by beating the big bad, and in fact, doing so just makes matters worse.
.

Like I said earlier too; literally the "nicest" things in these games is the first two or so chapters, everything after gets dark, creepy, and various shades of disturbing.  In that, it's unique, it's hardly a tale of "hope" like most RPGs try to pass along; sometimes even your best efforts aren't rewarded.  Essentially, it's like looking at something gross: it's disturbing, but you can't look away.  NieR had a similar effect: but it was more of just a well told and sad story.  And I know I'm just repeating myself by this point, but the idea of making pacts with all your favorite mythological or fairy tale monsters in exchange for something you value is just cool (becoming awesome at the cost of something just feels more real than super-anime-magic-powers I guess), and the game has hack-n-slash elements that's a lot like Wednesday Addam's wonderfully bloody play.

You say stuff that says nothing.  What is your point, man!?

If it helps, I had fun with it.  I had more fun with the story though. :D

I'm just teasing. It just bums me out when I see one of the few games this gen that had a real spark of originality get dissed. :/

Lardy, have you seen how many posts I've made here?
I'm with you, just not about the gameplay.  Twi sides of the same coin, buddy
6269  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Surprise! Drakengard 3 on: March 13, 2013, 01:37:40 AM
Nier was hardly a standout in gameplay unless you count its fun use of ripping-off other gaming genres

Don't make me hurt you.

*groan*  It certainly wasn't too thrilling.  The bullet hell was kinda cool -- if you like bullet hell (another way to see it is really lazy attack patterns).  But the game obviously made a point to [at least] parody Zelda.  I'm not saying it was bad, but it wasn't exactly original, and it's been done better.

ANYWAYS.  I'm guessing I'm not the only one who noticed that the chicka with the flower in her eye looks exactly like (or very similar to) Kainés.

...I wonder if Evans is coming back to sing a bit.

Three cheers to Dice. Nier has certainly proven to be the most overrated of the RPG waters I've tasted because of this lot.

It was enjoyable enough; but it's one of those rare cases where Cavia was just a better storyteller than gameplay designer (aside from a few unique elements -- and by god, I loved levelling up weapons for the stupid-awesome stories).  Lard apparently begs to differ, of course.

But I'm not too sure what you were going in expecting; the praise was more geared to story and world and characters -- and you're not exactly the biggest JRPG-pundit going around here.... but I like you for your personality and great taste in art and sometimes music! :D

I will kill you slowly and then dance about on your grave.
