6436  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 on: February 23, 2013, 04:22:35 PM
Also, I bet most of the didn't even want to play the game in the first place, unlike the day they have to play the next Triple A First Person Shooter, Neptunia is their boring day of work.
In the end I don't blame them, playing something they probably don't want to play, from a genre that does not appeal to them and even if they do, it is still a very niché title. Neptunia mk2 here at RPGFan got a 60%. I don't see it as bad, but it shows that even people here that are more open minded to a broad range of RPGs would not enjoy it as much as other niché titles.
That's what sad about most reviewers in gaming magazines. Not putting RPGFan on the bandwagon, it seems like most reviewers like to point out to games like Neptunia Mk2 and say that this is a sign of the JRPG genre dying out into something that they find stupid and not worth they're time. In the long run they will try to convince consumers this statement and it really disgusts me. It's like they're so biased on niche titles regardless if it's bad or good because if it's not like a triple A title they'll think that regardless of whether or not they give it a positive review, the game won't sell because it's not like a Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto type of title. I like that RPGFan is very concise and honest with their reviews, which is why I'm a member on their forums. :)

Likewise, opinions like *that* tick me off.

It's up to a reviewer to give a game a good or bad grade.  Unless you've been actively avoiding reviews, Fire Emblem and Ni no Kuni both have been getting 90%'s and A's across many reviews.  Neptunia has a ton of faults, and some will like the game's more common anime tropes and silly but light-hearted humor more than others.  It's for a niche audience, and I think NISA knows that.  You can't force people to enjoy a game, especially if the general style is really not their thing, the same as how 'Call of Duty' isn't your jam.

I don't think it helps that Neptunia has some vaguely sexual content, highschooler "big boob" jokes, and a somewhat nerdy console human (literally).
BUT to the right audience it can be risquee content with pretty anime girls, some "titillating" humour for a good gag, and fun console-based puns, jokes, and plot elements.

The game DOES have repetitive dungeons, and content is somewhat bare, and conversations aren't always too enlightening or clever.  And sure there are a lot of things to balance it out and make people like it, it still might not be everyone's style.  We're all here because we love RPGs, but not all of us have to like every single one.

While I agree, it's best not to call it stupid, but some of Neptunia's content I certainly wouldn't call "smart" or tasteful (I realize that's not what it's meant to be, but I can't enjoy anything so silly and ridiculous; I'm also clearly not the demographic):

There's nothing wrong with having a title you like that many others don't, god knows I do (ex. Star Ocean 4), but I don't think it's part of a "destroy JRPG agenda" in favor of FPS or other big tittles.  There's a lot of supporters for a good RPG still, but there also just haven't been too many of HD consoles.

Like John said, "Different strokes for different folks.".

I do think a review from someone who *enjoys* this style of game (moe moe anime magic kawaii battlers) and a review from someone who is...Um, well, less inclined to enjoy them would be a great read.

I always have a conspiracy about those recording-movement devices.  I'm sure automatic toilets have a camera in them, and if the guy doesn't like what he sees, he makes the toilet flush while you're on it.  ... ... ...I believe this.
Even if it can, what the fuck are the gonna look at all the time?  The 10% of gaming girls?? (I hear it's more, but the amount of male customers I serve says otherwise -- and I'm not counting The Sims or Farmville shit).  Even if --- I wear a diaper when I'm self conscious someone is looking!  TAKE THAT!!!  ...you should do it too, Yodeer.

Yeah I hated this dude.  His face was funny though

What I was talking about with FF8 was when you went into several paragraphs of detail about the plot but also the infamous "icicle impaling" scene that goes completely forgotten.

Ffffffff I was vaguely thinking I was supposed to remember SOMETHING I'd said lately, and THAT was it.

To be fair though, FFVIII forgets about that shortly after Squall's fake out death (aside from making it Edea's Limit Break instead of her tentacle hair (which wasn't even properly animated and made the scene where Riona trying to tag her with the Sorcerers' Collar somewhat less creepy and far less threatening (since it wasn't telekinesis) than it could've been and was respectfully)).

It was probably one of few instances where an FF hero is fatally wounded, and the game does NOTHING with it.  They missed their change for serious dramz.  I actually think the staff as on shrooms through half of the development process.

...but it DOES have hockey player enemies... My Canadian Blood warms up to the thought of it!!!

Sweet tattoo as usual, Klyde. :) I always like seeing you post your work. If ever I were the type to get a tattoo I would want Mami from Madoka Magica on my crotch firing the her Tiro Finale move.

The gun will be my penis, as if it needed said. Will you do this for me?

If Good Smile makes reprints her figure (or makes the slightly altered "movie ver") I'm SO picking her up.  For the little screen time she had, she's super popular -- but I've fallen for it too.  I made a fancy pick of her you can see on my dev page (/SELFPROMOTION)

My JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test, a standardized test by the Japanese government) certification arrived today.  Now I have an official piece of paper that says I know Japanese.  I took the N3 test, which is just intermediate level but it was my first time taking it and I wanted something I was confident I would pass.  Planning on taking N2 this year (test is only offered once a year...).

Kevadu wanna be my BFFFF and go to Japan with me as my translator-slash-friendbuddy?

Consider them things, love ya, xoxo

The voice over in that video for the NISA US release made me cringe. Soooo cheesy.

You know, I didn't actually watch the video when I posted it...you got me curious.  Wow, that was horrible...

Omg..... haaha.... yikes.  Not helping sell it.

Was this game badly received in Japan? Because from the looks alone it does seem pretty nice but I admit I haven't seen much besides some videos where most of them were an anime cutscene and very little gameplay.

I've read on multiple sites that it was nominated for Japan's "worst game of the year" award.  I'm not sure the original source, but that rumor seems rather widespread.

Normally I stick my nose out of things like ratings, especially if it's a mixed review -- I like to think some will like it, some won't.  Hell, some people HATE games that are otherwise unanimously loved.  I stick my nose out of it UNLESS a game is unanimously hated, then I feel I have a moral obligation to warn people from spending fifty bucks on something most of the world has tried and hated.

^^ The movie was weird, and I found in the end, it wasn't terribly memorable.  It was quiet, and a lot I felt almost unnecessary (I didn't really get the B plot with her editor and Arnau  -- I was working on a project, so maybe I might have missed the bigger movie behind their pot and the film's overall theme and meaning, so....maybe it's my bad).  Aubrey is an interesting actress, a good aura like you said, somewhat naturally melancholic too almost (or at the very least, typecasted as such between Scott Pilgrim, Parks and Rec, and Funny People).

Curious though:
Code:
I don't know if I was reading it wrong and since they don't really answer it, do you think the reason Kristen Bell was alive and well was because Kenneth was able to save her??  I read it that way, the movie tries to make him look whacky, but I did think that he had saved her but chose to stay with Darius instead.
6445  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fire Emblem 3DS on: February 22, 2013, 10:03:02 PM
I have pinpointed why I dislike the animations in this game. They are not awesome like the 2D animations from the GBA games. Sad.

Yeah, the flashy and over the top animations of the 2D GBA games were awesome. Now we just get generic slashes and pokes most of the time. I still like the new graphics though (the feet thing never really bothered me).

2....D...???  Geez!  Bygone age!! :P

Naw, I'm kidding.  I'm also sad that Capcom is all hot shit now so we'll never see their amazing 2D artwork ever again.

I do like the 2D in GBA fire emblem, but I do like when a pegasus knight charges head first at an enemy when another unit follows up with a spell or arrow to their ass.  I think it's cool you can change how you view the battle straight on, dynamic, or even in a first person view too.

Question.

As hardware gets more powerful, there's greater pressure on developers to fully utilize that hardware. However, to do this, the number of manhours spent on a given project is going to increase.

My theory on next-gen games is actually based on this.  I think the Wii U, Vita, and 3DS will especially pick up the pace for projects that just don't have the kind of money and manpower.

I loved her in Just Friends, one of few memorable aspects of that film.

Also, I like her better than http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrVoJgQ7u8w who I feel I need to bring up.

Jesus what a waste of time that was. They would have been better served to ride the hype and speculation train so they'd actually have a REAL reveal at E3. I mean, if the CEO and the physical console couldn't even make an appearance, what the hell does that give you? We got to stare at a controller we've all seen leaked shots of for weeks... yay. If they don't manage to nail a sweet spot on the price point, they're screwed. Durango is coming, as is the Steam Box and Apple will probably enter the home console market via Apple TV sooner rather than later, plus we have the Ouya too. The field is going to be super crowded and Sony doesn't have the brand loyalty it commanded with the PS and PS2 anymore. Let's see if they manage to flub yet another console launch... third times the charm.

Specs?  Features?  Controls?  Games?  Do these things mean nothing to you?  The thing I care about least is what the friggin box looks like...

I hope it's a floating spherical glass ball that makes a rave light show when you boot it up.  It then asks how you are and tells you that you're pretty.
