The Atelier Series and Mass Effect.

I did try to re-pick up "Dragon Quest"... but it will never happen again.  It failed me.
6573  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Next "Trails" game announced for PSP on: December 23, 2011, 03:26:33 AM
I think the Trails barrier is the massive amount of text.  Probably wouldn't change much :(

A massive barrier of text... that'd take a long time to translate when time is on short supply for a system. This is not an issue for PC, so it'd change plenty. Plus at worst they can get a shot in the arm for translating later games as the game gets in massive Steam sales.

I posed the same point on the uh, official XSeed forums... again, I guess maybe it's because I love playing devil's advocate, but I hate dealing with the "fan" crowd the forums attract sometimes.  Most posted that they'd be more satisfied with a physical release (which is looking more grim by the day).  What became more frightening was the few posts that wanted to see a *physical* PC release. =/  Yikes.

I want a physical release too, of course.  But it doesn't seem like the PSP has much of a future anymore.  Has Squeenix said anything to the release of Type-0 and the platform?

FFXIII-2 isn't even out yet, why are people jumping to conclusions so quickly? Wait a second, it is out in Japan and the reviews say it is awesome. Sounds like a lot of people need to get this chip off their shoulder and get over themselves.

I remember when veteran GameFaqs reviewer AshleyWinchester gave a 7/10 to FF13 when it came out in Japan... no NA player had played it and yet the flames had come out in full force.

6575  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on: December 23, 2011, 03:17:15 AM
*groan* We are going to have to agree to disagree, since I disagree with you still despite your "justifications".
Ghirahim as a story battle is a lame reason to still fight him three times.  For both him and the Imprisoned, I think both could have lost *at least* one battle.

TP may have told you when you earned even the simple 5 rupee piece, but at least all text could be skipped.  Hearing the Tinkerer dude ask me what I need upgraded and to come back 40 times blows ass and I don't think should be chalked up to "it won't change".

And again, "investments" in items are pointless when the game shells out rupees faster than I could ever hope to earn tuition.

This game was in no way a 90%.  I think reviewers who do give it that high a grade are being disillusioned by the name "Zelda" appearing in the title.  I do think it a remarkable title, especially GIVEN it's change to the series, but not FOR it either.
6576  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales Of Vesperia. on: December 22, 2011, 06:46:17 PM
I think its the best tales game this generation, and one of the top 10 Jrpgs too

I more or less agree, except for the story that is like watching ripe and pretty fruit getting old, poor tasting, and mushy and formless.

The way the story shifts around is messy at best.  The amazing cast really hold whatever plot beautifully though.

Man, you guys are total downers. I've been looking forward to getting this for Christmas, but all these comments are killing it for me. To be perfectly honest, I don't even like waggle gameplay, but for Zelda I'm making an exception. I don't look forward to flapping my arms like an idiot. Just what I need to do is inflame my chronic pain while playing a freaking video game. So doc, I was playing a video game, and...

They're just griping because it isn't the "BEST GAEM EVAR!!!111...", but it's still an excellent game and one I feel puts the last two console Zeldas to shame. There isn't any particular point where the game hands you a macguffin out of the blue like in WW and the game is far more coherent and coordinated than TP was. Yes, the sky was pretty bland overall and the game kinda suffered from a distinct lack of region diversity and yes I'll admit the day/night thing feels like it got the sheers during the editing phase but a lot of those gripes that Dice mentioned is just useless bitching and whining about not having more. There being only one town; kinda hard to justify more of them given that a) they're in the sky and b) this is supposed to be Zelda Origins so having only one settlement kinda makes sense thematically (wait for The Dark Link before whining about the lack of towns). The Beetle being slow; makes sense when you're doing things like navigating mushroom filled tunnels which would be a lot more difficult to do at breakneck speeds. And so on....

Basically just ignore them and try it yourself.

Eat ass with that comment, Aeolus.

I hope you read my final major gripe and comment that stated the fact the game was gettin 90%'s or higher, when there is still quite a bit wrong with it.  Another issue I had was also when a PREVIOUS installment did things better.  I thought the point of a sequel was to rival or "move up" in a series.

And I'm sorry if me hating the game for having TWO bosses fought on THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS is "useless bitching".

The upgrade system IS BASIC AT BEST, and not all upgrades are even useful.

And I'm sorry if I hate reading the same fucking item descriptions every time I booted the game.  I didn't mind hearing it the first 80 times, but after a while, it DOES get rather tiring.

I thought some of my arguments were fair points, and definitely factors that would have been complained about if this had been any other series.

Furthermore, I did say I liked the game, a lot.  But I think it's fair to say that the game was an "infant" in it's new concept and take on the series with what can be even greater in the future.

Did you play the game or was it TEH BSET EVAR to you.  And I'm sorry I sound like a mindless retard to you too, what with all the "!"s and "1"s.... >:/

Haha it's nothing that intensive!  Wrist flailing is more the issue than the entire arm. :P

The game IS good, very good.  You won't think of the issues as you're playing it.  You will enjoy it.  But I am sick of the "BEST ZELDAR EVAR" comments when it has it's issues and is far from flawless.  I'd buy it again for $50 it costs.
6580  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on: December 22, 2011, 12:04:04 PM
My Beefs:

- Upgrading is mostly pointless.  Increased Bomb/Arrow bags aren't needed because when you do need either item there's always a ton of stuff to break for it.  Bombs are already automatically re-grown anytime you find a patch.
- The Beetle.  It's slow.  I'm glad the game doesn't "pull a Zelda" by needing it for the boss (*groan*).  Upgrades to it are pointless too: "speed up" is only till it grabs something, then it's slow again; and "increased life" is never needed since everything will be within it's reach.
- Dungeons really take second fiddle, it's nice land areas have more to do, but dungeons aren't nearly as cool or clever.
- More money than you know what to do with.
- Pouch system: the fact the game is easy enough without it is beyond the point.  Weird too, I somehow fit a shield in there, and picking/drinking a bottle accidently happened more than I like.
- Bow & Sling aren't nearly as fun to use, the lack of a Z-target option makes them more inconvenient as a kill tool so the game can focus purely on "motion controls".  The game focuses too much on sword play...which reminds me...
- Lack of enemy variety.  There's like... 6 main types.
- Final Dungeon.  REALLY cool concept, I hated how it recycled previous dungeon designs...
- Sailing was way, way more interesting when you found an island.  It's nice that flying is more intuitive... by making me "flap" the controller like I'm having a retard attack.
- Story is seriously hack.  Zelda is all cool, then she gets her hospital-whites and she's serious and a lot less fun.  I wanna grab those fucking hair ornaments, they defy gravity... and her nose looks like a purple-pink plum.  The Imprisoned are silenced by a giant island falling on them.  Lame.
- NPCs weren't more than meets the eye the way Majora's Mask did beautifully.  I know MM is a special case... but (for example) the Fortune Teller breaks his ball, the Dad loses his kids rattle, the Girl is in love.... all for gratitude crystals?  Blah...
-Fighting a boss three times happens TWICE.  I kinda get Ghirahim's case, but the Imprisoned are just annoying, and the last two are fought way too close together.
- Night/Day system is a lost concept.
- Faron Woods doubling as a really lame Water area.
- Fi is useless.  I can't relate to her during the ending.  She was seriously lost potential, and a huge step back and a falling down the stairs compared to Midna.  She gives you like 5 things to talk about, each boring.  And her percents got old, she was right all the fucking time anyways.
- Lack of Grandeur, no scene really felt too important... getting the Master Sword was a surprisingly tame event... maybe it's because it took "proving yourself" in the 3 lands on 3 separate occasions to get it.
- Motion Controls.  Not so much the whole thing, and not so much READING MOVEMENT so much as TRACKING DIRECTION.  Thrusts especially gave me some trouble.
- The game is still too easy.  Hero mode solves nothing.

I really do like the game, but the 9's, A+, and gold stars or whatever are clearly getting a "but it's a Zelda game" type of review.  It's a lot of fun, but I really think it's a "starting effort" in terms of the motion controls.

Funny enough...I was looking up a bunch of Coen Bros. flicks I wanna rewatch on imdb.

EDIT To stay on Topic: I played nothing today.
6582  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: December 22, 2011, 02:39:06 AM
I don't know what FF vocal theme I liked less: That one, or Melodies of Life.

Though the XIII-2 one is shaping up to be even more generic and boring.

Oh man... yeah, I'm not digging this era of melodramatic 90's slow movie-credits-type music.  Melodies of Life at least had decent in-game instrumental pieces...  But sung they're so full of sap.

Credit to Type Zero for picking a male band... and one that's not Gackt (a la FF7:DD)

Weird saying Kingdom Hearts did a better job with the pop.  Fuck, any other series has.
6583  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: December 22, 2011, 02:31:21 AM
During the worst time in my life, I loved that stupid FF8 ending theme... but I also remember thinking: "there's no fucking way a guy could ever sink his teeth into this".
