6616  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal on: December 27, 2012, 01:48:01 AM
I heard the Fairy world was the weakest of all of the SOA plots, but it's uphill from there.  The concept of the show is great, but seems to be dulled by really dumb plot decisions.  ...am I the only one to find the pretty hardcore relationship between Kirito and Asuna rather refreshing?  I kinda got sick of the romances that take 25 episodes to chronicle a first kiss (or worst case: a fucking hug).

On that note:
I've been reading the Fushigi Yuugi manga.  I loved it when I was a kid and new into the world of anime that wasn't the stuff aired on North American cable.  Unfortunately, it's long, and dub VHS wasn't easy to find, so I dropped it.  I picked it up again for old time's sake and remembered everything I loved the first time.  It can get pretty hammy, but at least the series knows what it is and doesn't try to document how a couple took several volumes to fall in love.  Yuu Watase still manages to shock readers with the drama, and the action is great and the plot twists consistent.  The characters are widely enjoyable (I like how the main Suzaku warriors look charming and heroic while the villainous Seiryu warriors happen to just look so creepy/evil -- that's just *so* unfair; clearly being born into the bad guy territory makes you grow up to look like hell).  Definitely hitting up the Genbu series after (it's almost done too... so yaaay I won't have to wait for the next volume).

I got the FMA manga.  I loved the anime (again, didn't finish), but -- as usual -- I hear the manga is better.  Drawn by a female....that kinda surprised me given the content (and honestly, I hate the shoujo manga style sometimes -- their eyes are like half of their fucking skull and with swollen lips.

On that note.  I skimmed through friends collection of Fruit's Basket manga... is it just me or does the art get WORSE as the series goes on??  It becomes really flat later on. =/

Watching Darker than Black.  It's really good, but edging on the last 5-6 episodes, I have a feeling a lot will go unexplained and many of its characters inexplicably missing if not dead (there's just too many characters for a 24 ep series).  I feel like it's really, really good, but a few key moments and plot points shy of being "legendary" or whatever.  I do like how they invest 2 episodes into a plot from what would otherwise be a single episode, makes it less rushed and gives you time to really get comfortable and familiar with everyone on screen.  The concept otherwise is fantastic; but the series seems to bite at more than what it can chew.

Gonna put this in as a link instead of a pic because it's giant.  The flowchart of Every RPG Ever, from some magazine.

I loved that [again and even when it was first posted].  I also love how Tetsuya Nomura can't draw muscles...Cloud's bicep muscles there seems to be blending into the front part of the elbow.  He should take some notes from the Street Fighter artists --- who draw too many muscles.

^^  I really liked the book until it became a "it's up to the viewer" ending.  I hate that stuff.  But in regards to isolation=boredom; I've always found that when a movie tries to show boredom/isolation (especialy if it's prolonged, liked you say it does), it can convey boredom to the viewer.  I always hope directors avoid doing these parts for the same reason.

Apparently Quentin T. is getting flack for use of the N-word in Django.... have these people never seen Pulp Fiction??  Where were they then when it was less appropriate to use than in a movie about slavery? =/
As usual though, Tarantino brushes it off.

sorry but id have to disagree grim. except for the part with it being extended family. i will never allow that to happen with my family. i dont know how it is for you but for me xmas is like a family reunion. i wont let that tradition die thats why i told all my brothers to fuck off when they wanted to do secret santa. and also when they tried to alternate years so they could go visit with a girlfriends family on xmas instead of ours. i invested my teenage years keeping this family together when our parents got divorced and wont have it be for waste.
Huh? This is not something to agree or disagree on. Every family does what is right for them. My family all live in the same city and see each other frequently. We don't need to exchange meaningless presents to express our love for each other. We didn't want to eliminate it all together, because it IS fun, so the one person thing makes sense FOR US. Plus, everyone buys for the kids.
Whatever works for your family is awesome by me.

I've noticed a lot of...um, poorer families do the Secret Santa by means of still giving gifts without having to spend for everyone.

I got a full grand from the folks.  They said not to get used to that, after my pop retires (any month-year now) it will be a lot smaller.  But they were proud of me with school and wanted to help my finances.

I got $150 from my brother and sister-in-law, plus the fuzziest fucking pajama I've ever worn and some hand lotion (awesome vanilla smell; good for this time of year).

Boyfriend got me Far Cry 3 and a Pre Order on The Last of Us (almost paid in full; he reached his spending limit haha).  Come May he's promised to get me the Wacom Cintiq Tablet. :D

I read this thread and realize I don't watch much anime.

I'm worried the drama would become too campy...

Guys who complain about never getting a girl because they think they are "too nice" and girls just like bad boys are usually the biggest assholes on the planet.

I agree after getting to know our basement-dwelling employee at EBGames.

To me: "Are you saying that you're a hipster now?  That'd be a shame... they're the biggest scum on the planet".
Me: "Uh...huh.."

Bad main outfit = More DLC Costume sales.

It's one way to make Lightning look less ridiculous.

I've always loved the sheer biological impossibility of having a face like Lightning or Serah's.  Or at the very least, their perfectly whisping hair.

Especially in the XIII's first FMV where she's on a train...and her hair is just blowing gracefully, as opposed to the way it would in...y'know, real life.

Easy or not, I still hate the Floating Continent until a few level ups (there's no where else worth levelling by that point), and The Fanatics Tower (?).  Opera House timed segment sucks beans too.

I'm waiting for A Land Before Time XXIV: The Big Meteor.

Ah well, hopefully the series can help at least *a few* kids learn Roman numerals... Honestly love when a kid goes, "Can I get Grand Theft Auto Eye-Vee?"

The Hobbit looked like it was playing in fast forward in 48 fps and the storyline had no resolution for anything. I mean, even in Fellowship of the Ring there was a resolution for the fellowship, and Boromir. For the Hobbit, it really shows that it's one book split into three movies.
I thought it was 2 movies?

Cha-Ching.  3 movies.
