Hmm, it's probably too late to give a serious answer now. But oh well.

I'm going to pretend this isn't a debate about graphics and instead about art direction (I think a lot of you are already doing this). Because the fact of the matter is the games with truly the best graphics are based on amazing art direction. I think a lot of WRPGs suffer in this department. Their art direction is often dull and boring (Serious offenders are BioWare and Bethesda), though often animated very well. They make up for it with game play, which is fine because games are meant to be played anyway. But it does give me a dulled feeling while playing. Like the worlds aren't really alive. JRPGs are extremely varied in how they approach art direction. Often quite visually stunning and engaging. But they have this problem where the characters populating these stunning landscapes often all look 10 years old (no matter their age) or like incredibly chic, fashion conscience teenagers (what many of the rest of you seem to like calling "emo"). This contrast between the wondrous world and its sometimes visually off putting populace really hurts them at times.

So generally WRPGs have dull, boring worlds, but with a fitting populace. And JRPGs have magical, wondrous worlds, but with an alien populace.

This I can dig.  Art is waaay to subjective and personal half the time and definitely falls on a matter of taste.  I spent a few hundred words too many ranting about the issues I had with Devil Survivor when no one saw a problem
And generally yeah, art direction can certainly take the spin that I think really helps split the divide between the love and hate for J and W RPGs.  And it certainly varies depending on the art style games individually go for.

Guaranteed, without the snazzy filters, Okami probably looks like rubbish (I'm over-exaggerating a bit there too).  You get FFX that had an appealing world, and interesting design.  Resonance of Fate was hurt by the repetitive if not somewhat hopelessly steam-punk design, but went with it.  Mass Effect, though ultra realistic, drove me nuts with the constant Star Trek-esque aliens... but hit the sci-fi future extremely well.  Uncharted made me cream myself with how into the Indiana Jones vibe it hit in a more modern setting.

And I think for that reason, I find Venus & Braves the most ATTRACTIVE game I've played in years.  This is an extremely personal choice of course... but I think they hit the nail on the head with a visual style that was not 3D perfect, but certainly a clever mix of anime-medieval-storybook from top to bottom.  The characters have these sort of western cartoon-y style, the menu interface never looses the old paper and pen look, the enemies are frightening, but nothing too grotesque, and backdrops look like a sort of medieval rendering of Tim Burton's animated works.  Of all game titles, this game strikes me as one that hit EXACTLY the look they were going for, and for that, it's amazing to watch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npfvsa-iFIM trailers that shows a bit of everything.  I actually can't write enough about this game's style - to me, it's perfect.

From all that I've seen of Last Story, I think it looks ugly as Resonance of Fate.

Does that mean every time you see my post you cringe?? =((((
;___;  I'm kinda meh too, but I thought Leanne was nice animated at the very least.

I find Last Story looks like garbage though myself.  I blame more the Wii's power, and MistWalker's attempt to over-bloom scenes where graphics are just too flat.  It's like a pretty hair do on an ugly chick.  God, that's an awful example.... and I'm hating myself for saying it.

Sakuraba is pretty good with the really mellow tracks, problem is you gotta filter them out from the heavier battle sequences.
I loved the FFV Dear Friends Arrange as well.
Chrono Cross has also placed me in a mellow state - none of the dungeons are really chaotic for being dungeons, and the battle themes aren't anything too wild.

And like everyone else said, orchestral albums, they're much bigger nowadays.

Quite frankly, I don't like playing as a masculine man-hero all the time.... and Shepard is as interesting as a caveman. =/

The day we find balance between W and J, I will be smiles.  I find it amazing how it's one or the other though.

Hoping for that as well.A perfect fusion of a JRPG with a WRPG.Everything best from both ends, leaving out the Japanese cheese and Western ham.

It's called mainline SMT.  See also: Romancing SaGa.

Romancing Saga has a fella with puple and pink hair, all all of SD bodies.... but no, you're right, definitely a nice combination of East and West cultural ideologies...hell, one of them has facial hair (excusing the SD).

SMT is a hit or miss.  Some characters look like they came hot off the boy-band train.  But I give...again.  Despite some odd design choices (easiest: hearts and teeth on boobies) their modern designs have "heroic" without muscles or fancy flare.... sorta.... P3's emo kid is a mixed bag too... but that's mainly because he's a fucken emo who probably would have slit his wrist by some point if the game didn't end the way it did (I kid, I'm trying to be funny).

I didn't find the Gold Saucer fun at all really, especially the arcade games.  Snowboarding as ok, but annoying.

And SO3 had those sliding blocks that knocked you out in maze rooms, remember?  As if it wasn't bad enough the first time in the Shrine of Kaddan, they throw it at you in one of the last dungeons (firewall?).  I remember liking the chess-based game though.  And cooking master hit me when I fucken loved watching Iron Chef. =)

Breath of Fire 4 was fun for me, they were harmless puzzles, and the Nautilus snail thing wasn't bad (I was so happy when I finally saw the Dragon god, it was a nice surprise).  I say it's harmless mainly because you skipped over Breath of Fire 3's infamous desert sequence.  At least Nautilis didn't give you a fucking a mirage and water-limit to deal with.

I'm not fat

:)

But I act like it.

I should be fat, I barely eat right during the school year.  I plan to work out though, because even if my body hasn't blown up, my cardio has been shot -- I pant going up stairs (mind you, a 30lbs+ bag doesn't help).

Floppy McBellz?

Man you know what game had really shitty minigames? Star Ocean 3. And by shitty minigames I mean ALL OF IT but especially the damn turtle driving sequence.

And did anyone mention Shadow Hearts: Covenant yet? That game is like nothing BUT minigames. And awesome outside of the tiny text.

Breath of Fire 3 and 4 (more the former) take the cake for stupidest fucken minigames.
BOF3: The rope-pulling game, the fairy thing took years, the hit-the-switch-when-126-beeps-have-happened, the furnace thing [?? I still didn't get it], and many more.

SO3 and ToS annoyed me for introducing both sliding blocks and ice/gravity-sliding minigames TWICE throughout the game.  Seriously - variety is nice.

Actually, it's partly my theory that explains FF-continuous JRPG success.  The fact they switch to "realistic" models.

After talking about Vanille's horrid battle voice, I can't help but love Sazh's.  Especially the end with the giggle and "I appreciate it"........ ... yeah, just click the link, it doesn't sound as funny here.

A Classic for the 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.  Probably the ONLY live-action Dr. Seuss film filled with all that 1950's song and dance.  It's "gay" in the 1950's context....  What I love most is how by the end he looks like a cross of Dr. Seuss and a Yoshitaka Amano design.

What I never got about blitzball was how you played it at the savepoints. In FFVII you had a big arcade for the minigames. In FFVIII and VIIII you had to find dudes to play cards with. In FFX it's just... savepoints.

I mean WTF were you shrinking down and playing INSIDE the save points? How did the OTHER teams get there then? Did Tidus just carry them around in his pocket at all times?

I'll argue that with that fact it cuts down travelling time to play a shitty minigame.

My favourite Final Fantasy momment will always be in FF9. When you get to name Amarant. I always called him "Homo" just to see the line "People call me...the Flaming Homo!"

I was young and I found it ever so amusing.

Haha that's fucking awesome.

I used to do weird shit to people's name for a lark.
One recently was renaming Meredy in Tales of Eternia to "Floppy".  Something about Floppy (between silly sound and a silly adjective to describe a person) just makes me giggle.
That, and I've had a thing for naming people McBalls.  Though recently it was a typo and came out McBells.... there has been no name less-threatening in the history of videogaming than having McBellz save the day.
