7741  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Your biggest surprise and disappointment of this year. on: December 27, 2010, 11:03:00 PM
Biggest Surprise:
Nier (duh - and woulda thunk it after coming off Drakengard.. the 2nd title had me hooked too, however)
Star Ocean: the Last Hope [PS3] (though I'm sure I'm the ONLY ONE here who feels this way - hence, biggest surprise)
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (this makes me sad given Namco's financial constraints since this title was actually good.  The price tag was steep, but a good title nonetheless)
I'd put Resonance of Fate here, but Tri-Ace delivers often for me - I just like their shit.
Anyways, all 3 of the above I clocked a ton of hours into this year, making sure I "super-finished" the game to some extent.

Most Disappointing:
FFXIII - I did tout its brilliance early on, and I loved the graphics, sound, and battles - but otherwise, it delivered less than every other FF game.  And something is wrong when SNES and PSX titles set a better precedence than a title two gaming generations later.  I did love it, but a step back most definitely.

I like - but feel but since it seems this video is trying to be genuine, and this guy was just, unfortunately, born to be able to let out a cry like that (sans the auto-tune)

I will ask one question, because it's sort of a meta-game thing. From the wiki, I read that Kiane is a hermaphrodite in the Japanese version, is that the explanation for why everyone is so cruel to her in the Aerie, even before she gets possessed? Or does that ever get explained?

It's not a Japanese version only thing.

They dance around the issue in the English version, sure, but they DO question why she's "acting like a girl" in the short story, state that she's a freak... so no, for once this isn't something
"fixed" in localization, and IS the reason they act like jerks to her in the Aerie.

Anyways, you're not going to be truly safe until clearing all the endings, but the playthrough for Ending B will show you the rest of the non-ending cutscenes.

I recall a few more "explicit" lines to the effect in the "novel" part... I vaguely remember though, but I remember giving the game a nod and saying "yup, there it is - she's a hermie"...at like, 3-something A.M., where the memory was promptly washed away so I should get some sleep.... and that's my story.

A shame such a good story in a game took so long to come around... but I do have to say, it really is damned shame more of these plot details weren't in-game... I'm willing to say it's a major flaw to the title as well.  A lot of the stuff I've read in the Grmoire Nier would have been great to see "acted out" in the cutscenes.  A lot of the scenes really play the game as a big tragedy, but it's hard to leave much legacy unless the backgrounds of the characters were put up more up-front.  I liked how Ar Tonelico 2 gave that bonus section, with FMVs, characters, and even background notes to the Hymnos songs.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, ultimate luck compilation:

Awesome compilation (favorite!)
Can't help but be reminded - and to follow it up - with this...

Luck, meet talent.  Talent, luck.
(though "patience" could also be the operative word)
7745  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: were you a good RPGfan this year? Xmas wishlist. on: December 27, 2010, 08:08:47 PM
I guess Santa thought I suck and gave me a throat infection going around (where's Doc Lev? haha).

Many pharmacies are out of the "gargle" for it, so I've been using salted water (yum[/sarcasm]).  I missed my Aunt's Christmas party and my Brother's, and stayed at home with my pup eating Mac n' Cheese trying to get better because I have to work...

Ah well, I'm just happy disease didn't follow on Christmas time till now as an adult; it would have been worse to go through a holiday sick as a kid.

I got a nice surprise for Christmas. Wasn't expecting anything but it was a pleasant surprise. Yay!

Thank you for describing it in such detail. >=(
Will we ever know the surprise??? D=

Part of me is curious about Katawa Shoujo, but another part of me thinks, "Well, I already work at a special needs school for multiply disabled high school  (and behaviorally disordered middle school) kids and see teenage boy-girl melodrama 5 days a week.  Do I really want to do that in a video game?"

I love this post for many reasons

I thought that portman was great in it. Near the middle and before she really started to go nuts it was a bit over the top... but hey.

I thought that was the point of being nuts. =D

If anything, I preferred the way Danny Boyle (28 Days Later) portrayed that "nightmare" feeling.  There's another movie too, but it's slipped my mind.
Anyways, the clear point of the flick was her decent into madness, while incorporating elements of the Swan Lake, and is emphasized by her last words, "it was perfect" - that's all it was all about.

But, stop me if I'm wrong, Yoda, but this is probably a movie I won't watch again.  One reason being the gross parts are hard to go back to and revisit, and the second being the film's depressing atmosphere and relatively easy clarity makes it no reason to want to watch again.  It is excellent, just "meh" for a 2nd go.
However, then there's the lesbian scene... hmm... I'm not homosexual, but two pretty leads are definitely worth admiring (I'm sure the BF will understand this too haha). :P

You all talk about about backing up save data... perhaps I can just watch the final ending on youtube?

Of course I can.

Is there a reason I shouldn't?  I know it's not the same, but I've just earned ending C... oh god what do I do

...well, after Ending C, what else is there to do (besides aim for that D ending)?
Your call, the ending is on YouTube, the warnings are funny enough

Just go read the translation of the Grimoire Noir and I think you'll be satisfied.

Beetlejuice is +1's favorite movie.

We saw Black Swan today. that was interesting....

more thoughts to follow

Funny enough - saw it today myself.  I watched about.... 80% of it, I was squeemish the rest.  A very interesting take on the similar storied "Swan Lake" play.  Definitely creepy, sad, and interesting.
I just wish there was a better indicator of what was real and what was not.  I'm not sure if Nina's insanity was perpetuated by the people around her or just sort of there.

Still a great film, and an interesting follow up to the machismo "The Wrestler" with a dramatic tale of ballerinas.
The leads are gorgeous and performed (aside the acting, their dancing rather) was fantastic.  I hear the stars have sworn off dancing for a while after because of it haha

Ha. I must be the only one in the world who loathes Kate Winslet and finds her terribly overrated. Someone, please tell me I'm not.

I dunno.... I think the voice makes it seem a lot worse. We'll find out soon enough. (Dear Square Enix, kindly give us a release date. Thanks.)

She is good.  I just can't stand how the woman ALWAYS looks like she's gonna cry haha

I'm sure they'll find someone decent.  Or some b movie star.

Bill and Ted made me happy because it was on the cooler half of movies that were potentially allowed in school... that or my high schooling system has failed us.

Beetlejuice is always weird and awesome, the cartoon never did it justice and would love another title....but...

I watched Disney's Tangled.  Wonderful movie, much better than I expected and was a ton of fun and brilliantly animated (the sheer length and movement of hair must have been developmental hell).  As much as I respect Disney's efforts to bring back songs into the film, the tunes in this were mediocre at best - they lack any sort of catchy melody, and feel like they have been done by previous Disney teens... a real waste of Mandy Moore's ability to act and sing beautifully.  Maximus (the horse) was hands down the best character.

Great movie, wonderful Disney production, nice to have them back.
Again, the songs suck, they're no "under the sea", "whole new world", and have nothing on the classics heard in Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty - those were classics.

Sorry... I love Disney, takes me back, and the happy endings (that children know, not what us adults associate with asian masseuse) always put a smile on my face.
