General Discussions / RPG Limit Break -- EPIC!
« on: May 16, 2017, 12:36:41 AM »
As our story stated here: http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2017/6232.html

In about 4~5 hours, ALUNDRA speed-run starts. I'm drooling. Trying to decide whether to sleep 4 hours, or just stay up like a madman.

Please consider donating, as well. 100% of donations go to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) -- they do great work with education, advocacy, and support group formation. They have helped me, and now they're helping me help others.

Also, $25 puts you in the running for a Nintendo Switch + Breath of the Wild. So ... yeah.

So, for the past four months, I have been working with a friend (our friendship being forged in the fires of Roguelikes) to make our first Platinum Trophy "Road Map and Trophy Guide" at playstationtrophies.org

Some of you may remember Ryan "Aeliana" Mattich, one of RPGFan's past staffers. He's gone on to be one of the top Sony-trophy hunters in the world. And he's also written definitive guides for dozens of games.

This one is my first, and it might be my last. Again, it was co-written. It took 15,000 words on the main guide, 2,000+ words for four supplemental "mini-guides" that are frequently used, and approximately 40 spreadsheets (across 4 workbooks) shared via Google Drive that cover all 900 items and all 300 monsters.

http://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/fushigi-no-dungeon-fuurai-no-shiren-5-plus/307682-shiren-wanderer-tower-fortune-dice-fate-tg-rm.html

I gotta say ... I'm pretty proud of this. Also, the game is only like $20 at this point. So if you like Roguelikes, IMO it doesn't get better than the Shiren franchise. It's Japanese Roguelike in its most essential form.

I don't know that I'll ever do any walkthroughs this ambitious again ... though I'm toying with the idea re: Touhou Genso Wanderer.

In the meantime ... hope someone gets use out of this. Most people didn't even attempt the Plat, and nobody was going to write the guide ... so WE wrote the guide and we are proud!

Thanks,
Patrick "Ramza" Gann

Single-Player RPGs / Romancing SaGa 3 on Vita!
« on: April 03, 2017, 11:58:10 PM »
http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2017/6083.html

Assuming this gets localized (as they did with iOS RS2, and have said they are finishing up on Vita RS2), that means that the RS trilogy will finally be available in English!

Now ... that leaves the two latest releases for them to localize (Imperial SaGa for PC, SaGa Scarlet Grace for Vita). I'm kinda-sorta okay waiting on them, I put hundreds of hours into RS1 (Minstrel Song, PS2), and I suspect the same effect will happen with RS2 and RS3. :)

Right now the show is running on Amazon's exclusive "Anime Strike" channel ... free month, then $5/month after that, I think. They have a ton of stuff, some of it overlapping with other outlets. But among their exclusives, this "Scum's Wish" show is blowin' my mind.

They're up to episode 7 so far.

The show is about ... sex'n'stuff? Relationships and complications. Friends with benefits. Unrequited love. Age gap issues. Some people with crazy personality disorders that ruin everything.

And it's drop-dead serious. No fan-service BS. Still ... very erotic at times, I suppose. No explicit stuff. But very deep, introspective, and so far, reeeeally heartbreaking.

Modern school setting, yada yada. You'll recognize stereotypes, then you'll see them snapped in half as the writers try to create interesting, real-ish, multi-dimensional characters.

Also, op/end music and animations are solid. I have a lot to say about the ending animation and some of the "suggestive" things going on in the kaleidoscope of abstractions.

But I literally have no one to talk to about it. So someone go watch it so I can be like "YO that was CRAZY right?" :)

Single-Player RPGs / SINoALICE

Yeah, the art doesn't just "look Taro-ish."

That's the Seraphic lettering appearing everywhere. The pseudo-Angel alphabet that often appears in four-letter combos in NieR (A,C,T,G) suggesting that "The Scrawl" is a virus affecting your DNA with this altered lettering.

Forgive me for jumping to conclusions, but a bunch of books and Seraphic lettering from Yoko Taro suggest to me that this is a dead ringer -- it's a side-story in the NieR / Drakengard worlds.

RPGFan Music Discussion / You just got STEINS;GATE'd
« on: November 14, 2016, 11:20:25 PM »
(see front page)

There's well over an hour of audio for you to digest in the samples alone.

If you have played STEINS;GATE, I think you'll dig this. If you haven't ... um, you need to? And then you'll dig the music even more. :)

The Soundroom / Steven Universe teaches mindfulness, CBT
« on: November 12, 2016, 07:38:52 PM »
There's a classic technique in cognitive behavioral therapy where you envision your negative or intrusive thoughts as leaves floating on a river. You see them come, you watch them pass, you don't hold onto them, they go away.

Thoughts pass, you don't grab on.

Steven Universe did something similar, visually, with the butterfly concept here. And they made some sort of new age smooth jazz groove.

AND I LOVE IT

(anyone know how old this episode is?)

RPGFan Music Discussion / Songs from Final Fantasy XV
« on: August 15, 2016, 10:44:13 PM »
http://www.rpgfan.com/soundtracks/ff15-songs/

1) What's cooler? That this is the first FFXV music release, or that it's Florence and the Machine doing it?
2) What do you think is the best of the 3 tracks here?
3) Do you think the Florence soundscape will mesh with the Shimomura BGM/OST, or is it too jarring a change?
4) Outside of this release (since we haven't heard the context of these songs in-game yet), what is the best FF vocal theme?

The only thing I'll answer is #4 -- if I can include all FF games, it's Noel's Theme "The Last Hunter" sung by KOKIA in XIII-2. Sticking to main-numbered, I think the first one is still the best one: Faye Wong's "Eyes On Me." With "Distant Worlds" (FFXI Chains of Promathia) in a close second.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSmAByGdanA -- there's "Song of the Ancients / Fate" -- timed nicely near the end with the near-end sequence involving Devola, Popola, and then Emil being heroic.

But from there you should be able to find the rest of the concert. Before it gets pulled down. And if S-E keeps pulling it down, hopefully it's because they plan to sell a bluray, which I will instantly buy.

A post from Emi on facebook suggests that she may, indeed, be doing some additional work on Automata, just not the theme song (the live concert HAS that song, by J'Nique Nicole, and it's veeeeery good!)

Thought y'all would want to know, since NieR is like, one of the best things to happen to VGM. IMO. And I like to think I'm right.

Single-Player RPGs / Final Fantasy IX Steam Release -- ACHIEVEMENTS!
« on: April 14, 2016, 01:29:29 PM »
I'm an achievement hunter, aka achievement whore.

They list an achievement for getting Excalibur II.

The PC version lets you skip FMV cut scenes and disable random encounters.

SO, I propose a race ... first to get Excalibur II on the forums wins a virtual high-five from Marcos. (yes, I just volunteered Marcos to perform a non-real action.)

Who's with me? Or rather, against me? Because I'm-a go for this thing in my first run of the PC version. >:)

Single-Player RPGs / Romancing SaGa 2 in English
« on: April 11, 2016, 09:02:24 PM »
It's happening, people.

It's really, really happening.

YES I'd rather have it on Vita.

But I'll take what I can get. Now, if S-E would just do with RS3 what they did with RS1, but for PS4 ... give me the most ridiculous cel-shaded goodness, full-scale remake. My body and mind are both ready. I want to own the full SaGa collection.

(oh wait ... Imperial SaGa. and SaGa Scarlet Grace.)

But still, this is like, a 25 y/o game that we're finally getting. And I've been listening to its music for forever and a day, and I want to SEE and PLAY the game associated with that music.

Anyone else pumped about this?

Anime, TV, and Movies / "Confession" (2010) Japanese "horror?" film
« on: December 18, 2015, 04:34:43 AM »
I have never in my life seen a movie like this.

The closest plot I can think of matching this film is actually the Scott Tenorman episode of South Park. Come up with worse-than-death hells for the people you want to get revenge on, and go.

Without the over-the-top voice, without the insanity and the effects and the blood and gore. Just cool, calm, even, revenge story that unfolds at a freaking perfect pace.

I highly recommend it.

The Bazaar / CDJapan sale includes SaGa Battle -Ren- 30% off
« on: November 27, 2015, 01:50:06 PM »
I searched through a bunch of import CD deals today ... nothing particularly impressive. The Square Enix members store (US) has the Bravely Default Christmas album 20% off. That's not too shabby.

But probably the best deal I saw was 30% off one of the best albums of the year, the "Ren" album in the SaGa Battle series (it's the latest album, includes an Imperial SaGa track and more SaGa Frontier goodness).

If you don't own it but have flirted with the idea of owning it, now might be a good time to pick it up.

Have fun spending your money this weekend! :)

Single-Player RPGs / LR:FFXIII to Steam -- the trilogy is here
« on: November 20, 2015, 11:41:33 PM »
http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2015/4104.html

For all you PC-only folks. This is cool.

Why?

Because XIII-2 and LR:XIII are both, individually, better than XIII. Combined, XIII-2 and LR:XIII tell an incredible story (IMO). And the music. Oh my, the music.
