1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: So does anyone think the Vita will get better? on: October 15, 2013, 03:51:13 PM
The PlayStation plus part is stale, imo, as I'm not much of a fighting game fan. Or a racing game fan. Or a 3rd Person Shooter fan. Gravity Rush was great, but I think they're hell bent on making sure everyone knows that. It's been free for months! Megaman is sweet though. At least I have no reason not try Virtue's Last Reward one of these days. So really, the pickings are grand if you want to amass the great mountain that is the backlog.

Gravity Rush has been there for months because they always have a set of free games that stay the same for a full year (so they can use those games in major advertisements). For the Vita, it's Gravity Rush, Uncharted, and Wipeout. The 12-months expires next month though so it should be interesting to see what they replace them with (and if you haven't already downloaded them to activate them in your PS+ account be sure to do that now so you keep them after the switch).

As far as the Vita's prospects, I'll admit that there's not a lot in the way of big name games coming up soon but I'm excited for Ys Celceta, FFX HD, and Tearaway, and I've gotten plenty of use out of my Vita (mostly Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, and DJ Max Technika Tune) so far.

Over 95% funded. :)

We listed the three games on the page as inspiration for the following reasons.

Phantasy Star - General Setting & Feel
Chrono Trigger - Graphic format, No Separate Battle Screen, Multi-Character Combo Techniques, Fast Pacing
Suikoden - Base Building, Political Intrigue

Any other games I may have mentioned on twitter are probably just personal favorites (like Lunar).

Anyway, we're not trying to make yet another retro game. With this game, we're really trying to make a game that feels like a high quality professional RPG and not just a "Good for indie" RPG. We're specifically focused on improving on the weaknesses of previous games of ours like the lack of variety & the poor UI. And as usual, we're going to be trying out a few new things (like variable MP ailment abilities & various ways to speed up turn-based combat).

Looks like the average player is still griping over this not being Vita compatible as opposed to talking about the game itself.

Yeesh, didn't anyone save their PSPs?

Sony's PSN policy says you can only have your account hooked up to 2 portable systems. Since my daughter has a PSP that means when I got a Vita, I had to deactivate my own PSP to use the Vita.

And even if I could buy the game and play it on my PSP, I'd rather wait for it to gain Vita compatibility. Better screen, nicer controls, and quicker load times? Yes!

Surprised that the RPGFan reviewer didn't like the game since the reviews elsewhere have been very positive.

1Up, RPGamer, and Gamesradar all loved it.

Yeah, we're really excited that the game finally has a release date.

The game is already fully playable - we're just doing some last minute checking for bugs and making little improvements here and there right now. i.e. when RPGFan meets up with us at E3, the build we'll be showing off will probably be the build that we're planning on actually releasing come July 10th.

Also, it's not just a matter of hiring programmers and doing it yourself. Some Japanese companies are very protective of their code and flat-out won't let anyone else touch it.

Robert's a huge Lunar/Grandia fan, so no surprise. Let's hope we get some dubbed vocal songs too!

No vocal songs - we're still working on just a small budget. If the Rain-slick games do well, I'd like to do that for our next project though.

I actually half expect Vesperia would've really done better. Bioshock's a US developed shooter, and most people who'd want those (or just similar games, let's throw stuff like KotOR in as a very loose "similar") wanted an Xbox anyway, or a decent PC.

Maybe, but I doubt the PS3 audience is that different from the 360 audience. It's not like the PS2/XBox situation where the PS2 had a million RPGs and the XBox had next to none - if anything the 360 has more RPGs than the PS3 does.

In any case, it would be beyond stupid to localize the PS3 version now - the game's already been out for nearly 3 years. Outside of a tiny but very vocal minority, nobody would care.

Whatever the case, denying PS3 owners the chance to play this game showed a huge lack of respect for their fans.

You can take it as a personal affront if you'd like, but it was a business decision plain and simple. If you really want Vesperia that much, then pick up a 360 and the game when this generation of consoles is over for dirt cheap - goodness knows, there's enough other good exclusives to make such a purchase worthwhile.

Chances are, even if there wasn't an exclusivity clause, Tales of Vesperia PS3 would have never come out in the US. Releasing a port a year or more after the game's original release is a sure way to get a sales bomb - just look at Bioshock PS3 (and Bioshock is a drastically more popular series in the US than Tales).

Tales of Vesperia is really easy to get on the 360 seeing as how it's on Games on Demand.

And since when is paying money for exclusives evil?
12  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Best (and Worst) Female Protagonists on: April 30, 2011, 01:14:14 PM
Really disappointed that Estelle from Trails in the Sky wasn't on the best list, but I assume that's because the game just came out. No mention of Chie from Persona IV was also disappointing.

And Aya Brea? Seriously? She was a pretty generic Resident Evil style heroine in the first two games and it just got so much worse in The Third Birthday.
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Will there be a Lunar 2 on PSP? on: January 06, 2011, 12:45:40 PM
The load times & the easier difficulty were annoying, but the dealbreaker for me on the PSP remake was the fact that the music would stop everytime the game loaded. The great music is half the reason you play a Lunar game and that just ruined the experience for me.

I'd love to see the PS1 Lunar: EB get a PSN release, but apparently the rights to it are a big legal mess so it seems unlikely.

If you have 160 MS points left, there are a lot of other great XBLIGs you could grab for 80 MS points a piece. For example, anything by Radiangames is awesome and only 80 points.
