1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: PS Vita worth it for JRPGs? on: December 19, 2014, 10:05:36 PM
While these aren't JRPGs, Virtue's Last Reward and the Danganronpa games are excellent as well.

the 64 gig isn't even commercially available in North America. You have to import it.

The 32 gig card is $80 in Canada, and a 32 gig micro sd card, which is significantly smaller than the PS vita cards, cost between 25 and 40 dollars. The reason people complain is because there's literally no reason for the cards to be so expensive beyond branding.

It would also be less of an issue if you could save downloaded Vita games separately from the game file itself because, seriously, you either need PS+ to maintain a save after you delete a game off your Vita, or you need to back it up on your PC. Why would you design your save system like that? It's clearly not mandatory since cartridge games save onto the Vita itself, instead of onto the cartridge.

And then you could continue doing it with Suks 4, Tactics and 5.

I don't know if you can skip Tactics for 5 but I'm pretty sure you can't skip importing 4.

Nope. 3 did not transfer to 4 because it took place 150 years earlier. 4 did transfer to Tactics (if you have 4 and Tactics, do it if you can), but they didn't transfer to 5 because there's like one shared playable character between them and 5 takes place a few years before 1. The only character who would benefit from the save transfers from 3 to 4 to 5 would be Viki since she seems to experience the games in the same order they came out.

Well that kind of sucks it wouldn't work with tales of heart R then would it? Also how is the quality of the stuff it plays on the tv?

It works with Tales of Hearts R. I got a physical copy of it and there's a thing right at the top that says "PlayStation TV compatible". All the things that use the touchscreen have alternate options.

Keep in mind though, that this is not a Sony product. It seems to be a third-party thing, and those have a history of bizarre and useless add-ons.

Playing Tales of Hearts R and I reached the Central Continent whose name I keep reading as Opa! I'm mostly wondering what the hell is up with the Twilight Forest. No one mentions anything about how weird it is.

My knowledge of Japanese is very limited, but from what I understood the English localisation is a very liberal one and I consider that a good thing (in this case anyway). They gave every important character their own voice, which is one of the hardest parts of translation/writing in general if you ask me.

Yeah, especially if there's no voice acting you understand. I haven't gotten very far, but I like what I've played. Although using the D-pad for normal battle movement and the analogue stick for free move keeps tripping me up.

I thought the Master being a female was fantastic though, so I don't see what's sexist about it?  A main [antagonist's] role, traditionally male, is finally female?  That's a 'yay' as far as I'm concerned and made the character harder to identify.  It makes the dynamic a bit more interesting and I assume why they often pair the Doctor with a female companion in the first place.

Some people think it's sexist because Moffat didn't make the Doctor a woman, so making the crazy villain a woman is apparently really bad. People seem to be under the delusion that Moffat went "the Doctor will NEVER be female, EVER!" when what he actually said (right before the reveal of Peter Capaldi by the way) was more along the lines of "it's not in the cards right now". Which is...not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

Hell, for all we know the BBC itself could have mandated no female Doctors.

Ring of Fates had a somewhat interesting story and the A.I. companions were...serviceable, if annoying. (Why did they both need annoying verbal tics?) Echoes of Time had much dumber A.I., I guess because they didn't have personalities to inspire the A.I. behavior, and the other two CC games are a town sim and a tower defense game, so it's kind of a moot point for those. Although the adventurers can be really stupid in My Life as a King since they can seriously wander around town all day, every day, buying random equipment and then running out of time to actually visit the dungeons.

Jude is an interesting case. For most of the game he's really idealistic and then
Code:
his mom dies right in front of him, basically breaking him for the rest of the story.

Wild Arms 4 really needed polish. Whoever came up with the characters and the world knew what they were doing, but the writing was so amateurish that it was really hard to take seriously. And then they hired a novelist to help write Wild Arms 5 which eventually devolved into "Racism is bad, right guys?" and the weird
Code:
timeloop ending that seemed to be designed to prevent a happily ever after
for no apparent reason.

To be honest, WA4 had one of the better endings.
It was a surprising mix of depressing and optimistic. Raquel was probably one of the high points of the game's story. A fully clothed, no nonsense powerhouse with some human weakness and mortality thrown in the mix.
Code:
The fact that by the end of the game there was no miracle cure for her illness and how her story ultimately ends was bitter sweet, but fitting

Honestly, the fact that Raquel
Code:
basically had cancer
was the most surprising part to me.

The problem with Wild Arms 2 is mostly the crappy translation. It's...below par most of the time, but it absolutely breaks when Liz and Ard show up.

I hate that it's so fucking anime it hurts.  Not that the other titles were less anime, but this one really goes for the Shonen Anime feel that I want to punch Dean in the face in almost every cutscene he's in.

Honestly, Dean is dumb by shonen anime standards. He takes the idea of the idiot hero to new and amazing heights. And most people want to smack him at least once while playing the game.
14  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Gust making a spiritual successor to Ar Tonelico: Ar no Surge on: October 08, 2014, 02:14:28 PM
Looking at the openings for the Ar Tonelico trilogy, I noticed something interesting in the translations. All three have a bit at the beginning where they reference separating the listener from one world and showing them another. Did they have the idea for the meta stuff all the way back there? Ar Tonelico Qoga even has a program command line at the beginning.

I remember hearing that the infodump was actually added in the translated version. If that's true, it's at least better than not having most of the plot explained.
