46  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tokitowa - Time and Eternity (third person 2D/3D RPG, imageepoch, PS3) announced on: July 16, 2013, 02:05:55 PM
So I discovered my cousin preordered a copy of this as a birthday present when it arrived in the mail. My first impressions:

The art is pretty nice, the animation is kind of janky, the music is okay, sometimes, and the acting is not bad. The gameplay is incredibly basic. Oh, and Zack, the knight, is a total creeper.

My first impression is that this game is mediocre. It's playable, but I think it would work better as an arcade-style short rpg thing.

X-2 wasn't necessary, but it showed another side of Spira when the people aren't constantly afraid for their lives, which is nice. It's not necessary, but it's not useless.

They best not waste their time bringing that PSP Suikoden over (Unless they mean the 1+2 game), because it was pretty awful.

How was it awful?  Did it have bad loading?

It had nothing to do with the rest of the franchise.

They recently released "Inuyasha: Final Act" which wraps up the story. Really really quickly. It's 24 episodes, but it feels like it should have been more, ironically.

I looked at a translation of the DxD book. It has all the fanservice in text form. Not kidding.

I really, really like Vandread even though it gets really stupid sometimes. And the nurse is just an awful character.

I also enjoy some ecchi shows when they really aren't that good. Highschool DxD and Asobi Ni Ikuyo/Bombshells from the Sky/Cat Planet Cuties (three official titles) for having some good ideas and well animated fight scenes, mixed in with absurd fanservice that drags the series down to guilty-pleasure level.

The problem with vanilla XII's license board is that it's actually really hard to specialize. Everyone ends up the same because everyone starts in really similar spots and when your characters are completely interchangeable in terms of skills and useable weapons, what's the point of having a choice of characters? You almost always end up with a really weird selection of skills at first with the characters too, because you sort of need to go for the Quickenings and some of them are in the stupidest spots.

Buy Tactics Ogre off the PSN.

What is the point of dropping middle names? I mean, those are both actual names (although Mel is short for Melanie) so, why?

At least with the blood, that was a censor board thing. It was supposed to be red, but that would put the rating too high. And the characters are developed. Kind of. Some of the least expected characters get the most development. And with Monobear...um, imagine Monobear with the voice of Mickey Mouse, not an imitation, the actual actor's voice. That's the cultural equivalent to what they were going for.

And I think the idea with the characters is that they're so good at their strength that it literally stunted their ability in most other things. Oh, and with the character who made you a bit uncomfortable. There's another character who's skin is chalk-white. It's actually a pretty normal skin tone that pops up in anime. Short-hand for they spend a lot of time outside.

Maybe they just finalized the contract?

The first good video game movie in my opinion would be the Professor Layton movie, but this could be the first Western example.

I assumed with Meruru they were cut down because the shopkeepers were mostly the same people as in Rorona and Totori. But there were a ton of conversations with them in Meruru anyway. Pamela even had a weird pseudo-romantic subplot reverse harem thingy going on.

I just finished the fan-translation through "perfectly legitimate means", so I'll definitely be buying the Vita version even if I don't have a Vita at the time, but yeah, the first episode of the anime is basically shot-for-shot the same as the first chunk of the game. It mostly introduces the characters, but none of the solvable mystery has started up yet, so if you want to see if it's interesting, just watch the first episode and stop there. It's basically the prologue and a little bit of the first chapter.

Just to be clear, only do that if you are completely unsure about it. Otherwise, if you can, the demo for the game has been fan-translated for PSP, so try that instead.

The Tales series evolves organically as it goes on while using different plots and worlds that differ in fundamental ways. For example, while Eternia and Symphonia both have a dual-world thing, they approach it from completely different angles. Pretty much all the games have something in their gameplay to set them apart, and the characters are great. Eternia was where the series really started going.
