61  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: NISA announces Danganronpa and Demon Gaze on: July 07, 2013, 11:56:29 AM
I just finished the fan-translation through "perfectly legitimate means", so I'll definitely be buying the Vita version even if I don't have a Vita at the time, but yeah, the first episode of the anime is basically shot-for-shot the same as the first chunk of the game. It mostly introduces the characters, but none of the solvable mystery has started up yet, so if you want to see if it's interesting, just watch the first episode and stop there. It's basically the prologue and a little bit of the first chapter.

Just to be clear, only do that if you are completely unsure about it. Otherwise, if you can, the demo for the game has been fan-translated for PSP, so try that instead.

The Tales series evolves organically as it goes on while using different plots and worlds that differ in fundamental ways. For example, while Eternia and Symphonia both have a dual-world thing, they approach it from completely different angles. Pretty much all the games have something in their gameplay to set them apart, and the characters are great. Eternia was where the series really started going.

Yeah, Phantasia is kind of bland. The problem I have with that line though is that it's Claus, who's 29, talking about a 17 year old. Adds some creepy, doesn't it?

If you've played Endless Frontier for the DS this plays a little like a simplified version of that in the battles.

It's Anime Expo in Los Angeles, so it's a North American event.
66  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tokitowa - Time and Eternity (third person 2D/3D RPG, imageepoch, PS3) announced on: June 29, 2013, 12:26:12 PM
Yeah, that was kind of weird. I guess they couldn't think of an image to quickly imply a close bond. It does make the protagonist look like a polygamist.

Arc Rise Fantasia was one of ImageEpoch's best, but that doesn't mean it's a masterpiece. It is well put together, even if the difficulty curve is shaped like a mountain range. The biggest problem it has is Ignition's localization. You sure you don't want to hire professional voice actors, Ignition? Most of their games are competent if somewhat repetitive. Maybe they should have tried teaming up with someone else for Tokitowa? Like, get a bigger budget or something?

Grandia 3 is bad. The battle system is not. It flows well, is exciting and the big problems with it mostly stem from a bizarre difficulty curve that looks like the Himalayas.

Just not the Xbox. Okay, the Xbox has like 5, but the Wii has several good ones and the PS3 has a ton.

Well, I just managed to get a pre-order for the Xillia Collectors Edition in. Turns out that Futureshop (Canadian equivalent to Best Buy, even though we actually have Best Buy) tends to keep bundles and special editions for longer than anywhere else.
71  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Atelier Escha & Logy uses the Dynasty Warriors engine (no, not Atelier Warriors) on: June 14, 2013, 12:06:22 PM
I could buy the Atelier Iris characters doing it (maybe not the ones from 3), but the only other Atelier protagonist I could see doing that is Meruru. She takes out like 3 dragons if you're good at the game.
72  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Any good RPGs in a non-medieval pseudo European setting? on: June 07, 2013, 11:11:54 AM
Well, there's Kingdom of Paradise/Key of Heaven (depending on your region), a fantasy action RPG set in a very east-asian inspired world, there's also the entire Shin Megami Tensei series. There's Anachronox (available on GOG.com) and Septerra Core (also GOG) as well for PC. And look into DS rpgs. There's a ton of them that are all over the setting scale.

The fadeout is present on the digital version. It just doesn't stay silent for so long.

It's a strategy rpg, not a fighting game.

As long as you keep the installer and don't uninstall it, you keep it.
