Suikoden II's story definitely deserves more than it got, but this is why we tell people to broaden their horizons and check out multiple sources for their information rather than just one guy.
But. It didn't star a brooding hero, an amnesiac, or a guy with multiple personality disorder. It didn't feature twenty left field plot twists per disk or even more than one disk. It didn't feature a plot of over 200 playing hours with about 180 of those hours consisting of boring fetch quests. It didn't feature a plot of a simple rebellion against the evil polluting empire turned vision quest to kill god. Nor did the plot reveal the origins of humanity as provided by an anime alien civilization that was destroyed, locked in unevolution, or simply crashed a forgotten cargo ship onto the planet like a hojillion years ago. And the plot wasn't even entirely centered on the main character's awkward attempts at trying to fall in love with the anime magical girl/princess while he and a bunch of plebs go chasing after some unspecified evil that's simply just misunderstood in its quest to cast everything into oblivion. Seriously? You expected Suki II's plot to compare to that? I scoff! SCOFF!!! at your silliness. Why have you got to highlight my ignorance all the time? :(

Starm Ongoose: Well, Dark Crusade's campaign is similar and I rather like that, although it DOES have provinces that give you special abilities.
What sort of put me off with Soulstorm is that your bases are apparently lost between missions whereas in Dark Crusade, if you win in a province, if you have to defend it later your base is still there (I don't think research carries over but that's minor).
And I like that because, for the player, it removes a lot of tedium from base building and also turns it into a long term goal. Additionally it makes the map more organic. at the start you just have a lot of empty provinces. As you go on stuff gets progressively more and more fortified.
Also the special ability provinces have unique goals as well, so...
If you are talking about the Racial abilities that they all have, those are still in the game (If they were there before, I skipped straight to Soulstorm, so what do I know). If you wipe out the Eldar fortress you can move two spaces instead of one, if you defeat the Sisters of Battle you can create Forward Bases, which basically means you pay Global Requisition to have a custom made base prepared for your arrival into new territory, and It stays their after the match is over, so if another race attacks that province, the forward base you made will still be there (Though anything you built AFTER the forward base will now be gone). You also get other bonus' from areas that aren't enemy headquarters. Some give you access to Elite Guard, which are super powered units unique to that race, that you buy with Global Requisition, are always with your army no matter where you go, and cost nothing towards the population cap. Webway gates function the same way I imagine. Some other bonus' like extra global requisition also exist.

@MeshGearFox: The campaign is nothing special, it's like the campaign in Star Wars Galactic Battlefield, but not as in-depth. It is definately like risk, though unlike other RTS's missions they don't have any other objective other than destroy the enemy, or hold over 50% of the Critical Locations. The only time you'll get an objective different from that is when you are attacking an enemy races Headquarters. For instance you'll have to destroy the generators giving the Eldar their protective sheilds.
The two races added to it, The Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar are rather fun, so I would get the expansion if not for the campaign, then to play around with them. My favourite race is the Sisters of Battle, though a million people will tell you otherwise. Dark Eldar, I've never used them much though they do seem interesting, alot more vehicle focused.

Like all Suikoden games, you can teleport once you get Viki. But yeah, until that point the boat sucks. Keep playing Suikoden IV. It's not as good as the rest, but it's still a solid RPG and some of the story elements play a fairly big role in the first Suikoden. So if anything, Suikoden 4 leads into Suikoden 1. That alone makes it worth playing, imo.
I'll admit, you have me intrigued. I will keep on chugging along.

My quest to play all the Suikoden games continues. I'm on Suikoden IV.
I can see why my boyfriend sold this game. I honestly don't know if I have the patience. It all looks like it would be really fun, but one thing fucking RUINS the entire experience and that is this fucking boat.
Do you spend a lot of time on this boat because I don't think I have the patience for this slow ass motherfucking hunk-of-junk. Especially couple with the ABSURD encounter rate.

The Dresden Dolls - Delilah.
I'm kind of freaking out about that. There is a reason it is the song of the momment. My friend was webcasting covers of Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer songs and during that song Amanda Palmer came in and chatted with us. It...was so surreal. It came out of nowhere and it was so cool. There were only 8 of us watching our friend and she popped into this tiny random webcast.
THIS COMMENT WAS WRITTEN IN A MOMENT OF FANATICISM AND I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS COMMENT WHEN I WAKE UP TOMORROW MORNING.

If it makes you feel any better, I always thought that about you. ;) Oh! This is one of those playful banter/jibe things right!? >.< I feel so welcome! Just like one of the guys. Okay, you had a dig at me, and now its my turn right? Okay, okay. I can do this, your momma ate so many skittles that she...uh, no, when you were born, your momma ate so many skittles - wait. I fucked it up again. Okay, your momma is so fat, when she eats skittles she has to...um...

If this wasn't fan service and they are just trying to portray realism by show wear and tear to her clothes, why is this never the case for male characters? Male characters may get the odd little rip on their shirt, or their jeans, but their left buttock is never hanging out while some thread dangles over their nipples.

I love the moment where I ask if someone wants a cider because I'm going to get one from the fridge, the person decides to not only tell me that they don't drink, also why they don't drink and also that my drinking this one lone cider makes me practically one with the animals, being unable to comprehend their superior intelligence. Then they have a smug look on their face like they are now the fucking Dalai Lama of wisdom.
Look, I was just being nice. I don't really want to give you one of my ciders, it's just a faux pas to not offer. I am aware drinking is bad for me, I have taken upon me, the seemingly Atlas type responsibility, to choose to have a cider once a week with my Sunday dinner.
