796  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Anyone planning to pick up Atelier Rorona? on: September 30, 2010, 12:08:48 PM
I was just thinking again of getting the game and then I found out some news. Nothing game breaking but makes me wonder why companies would even do this. They changed the age of Rorona and Cordelia from 14 to 17 and 13 to 16, respectively.

They're still minors and still look like 14 and 13 so what's the point ?

I'm still quite interested in picking it up but I'm not sure I won't to fork US$60 for it. Maybe when there's a price drop.
797  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of the Abyss 3DS on: September 29, 2010, 08:24:06 PM
Something new would have been nice, instead of another port, which the 3DS seems to be full of.

I thought the same, the 3DS is becoming the system of the ports already. Maybe in its first quarter it'll beat the psp in ports.
798  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Coming soon Ds rpg's on: September 25, 2010, 05:49:56 PM
Me too, even though I wasn't looking forward to them I know some people are. I really don't understand SE sometimes, Atlus and Nippon Ichi localize a lot of risky games on the DS and they are far from being as big as SquareEnix, so why won't they take the chances ? Even Sega releases some, risky games themselves.

If those companies, especially with DS games which localizing could most of the time mean "put an english subtitle", would do that even in the jap version of the game I'm sure people would import them and they wouldn't even have the trouble of localizing it here.

Let's be honest, some games are so obscure that hardly anyone that is not looking specifically for that game will buy it, they'd save money on advertising, printing more copies, etc.

Out of those game I'm only looking forward to 4 guardians of light and maybe Golden Sun which I've hear a lot of praise but never played as I didn't have a GBA back them.
Saga I play one of them on psx (if it's the same thing I'm thinking) but didn't enjoy it much. Not bad but I don't know ...
799  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fav/Least Fav Video Game "Parts" on: September 24, 2010, 11:47:26 AM
I hate that fucking sewer section in Xenogears.

If I didn't use a FAQ back then I am sure I would've dropped the game at this point.

One that I love I believe the most is in FFVII (spoiler everyone knoes) Aeris dies and you have to fight J.E.N.O.V.A. everything about it just makes mellow and sad.

Later I'll think of others. Things to hate are not hard to come by.

Anyone gonna play Parasite Eve I and II a few weeks before The 3rd Birthday's Release?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll go up on PSN at some point. I love the first one, but not the second's controls.

The first is not only one of my favorites PS1 games and even all time favorite games but the second ... I've tried playing it so many times and each time it seems worse. Thank heavens for youtube so if I want to experience a bad game for something else than gameplay we can just watch the a playthrough of a kind soul.

I really don't understand how they can get from a really original game to a cheap half assed copy of Resident Evil. I can't blame them because Resident Evil is also one of my favorites franchises to this date as I've beaten them all and it does sell really good, even back in the psx days, so it leaning towards it sounded understandable, but it turned out to be so bad it's not even funny.

I almost bought a copy of PE1 japanese so I could play on my PS3 (jap) even having a normal copy and a ps2 but PE2, I wouldn't want even for free. For what I heard the only really good thing about it is the story (what I expected from Squaresoft) but everything else is really bad.

Bottom line, if they come to PSN do yourself a favor, buy the first but neglect the second.

Now the hinted "sequel to Bayonetta" may have even more hopes of becoming true.
Aside from Infinite Space I'm loving all their games.
802  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The 3rd Birthday on: September 23, 2010, 08:51:16 AM

Tentacles? Haha. The game looks good though.

Tentacles, can't go wrong with them in Japan lol !

I'm so excited about his game I don't think I'll wait for it to come here, I'll just buy the Jap version and once again put my not so good Japanese to the test.
Oh, about the trailer, that part where she's exploding stuff with her spell (mitochondria), I wonder if the stages are all big and open like that ?

And for those that try to see, the old link is dead, here's a new one, check it before SquareEnix removes it again.

If you have the chance to use the japanese voices, do it because they're great ! Oh, and Fuuka's english voice actress will make your ears bleed.
804  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Anyone planning to pick up Atelier Rorona? on: September 22, 2010, 09:42:22 PM
I was somewhat interested in this game until I saw some video from Totori no Atelier which look so much better and I started thinking that if I am to get the "same" game, I'll get the prettier one.
If this comes at a reasonable price I might rethink, but considering the competition by this end of year I don't think I'll pick it up soon. Little Big Planet 2 has a lot of my attention.
805  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Capcom and Level-5 Teaming Up. on: September 22, 2010, 09:06:55 AM
Well, if we consider the nature of Phoenix Wright games and Professor Layton they could be doing something like that as well but my vote is still for Breath of Fire. I liked the part I played of Dragon Quarter but I got pissed after I found out the dragon power used did not recover. I was so pissed I quit the game lol.

Whatever they're working on, I'd rather wait because what I really want from them is Ni no Kuni. Or they could localize the fourth Professor Layton.
806  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FINAL FANTASY XIII on: September 21, 2010, 06:31:03 PM
I think the boss theme fits well enough, and just passable enough to be on my MP3 playlist. I really can't see what everyone finds so great about the normal battle music though. It just sounds so subdued and flat compared to previous games.

I thought it was decent but it got really dull by the end of the game. The best part is when the violins kick in full force.

Farron you bring great shame to these forums. How can you like such shitty characters, such simplistic gameplay, such lack of a heart and soul? Laughable villains, a cheap JRPG cop-out final boss, pitiful clicehd characters and character development..

Then again I may have enjoyed this game if I had never played a good RPG before and I had just come from Call of Duty 5 or something.

Don't give me that look (I know you're giving a suspicious look hehe). Really, can I really be blamed for liking a game ?
Well, characters, it's kind of like a hit of miss right ? I for example like more the characters in XIII than in VI which I can say the ones I really liked were Terra and Edgar and yet VI is still awesome. I only didn't like 1 character and liked all others, a thing that nor VII nor X (my favorites) managed to do.

The "simplistic gameplay" is controversial because fro my standpoint Dragon Quest gameplay is simplistic. There are people that like it and people that don't.
As I see, XIII has a fast paced gameplay, with less exploring, sure but in exchange of a momentum that doesn't go dull; best combat system in the series as you have to think really fast and react fast; best soundtrack with a lot of genres of music; good characters with a so so story and a very weak end game (now I can't deny). Does the things in it that could've been better make it crap for me ? Absolutely no!

Don't get me wrong, you can hate the game for all I care, but maybe you got more disappointed because what you expect it to be turned out to be something different.

Just to make myself clear, if you play Oblivion of Fallout 3 what do you expect ? An open game with lots of things to do, right ? How about the Atelier series ? A lot of item making and all. Final Fantasy ? Well, how can you be so sure they change a lot of things with each entry.

Once again, don't get me wrong, I can completely understand why you hate the game if it's not what you expect. When I go watch a movie I truly don't mind when I go to see something and it ends up being something else but I kinda hate it when it happens in games.

807  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FINAL FANTASY XIII on: September 21, 2010, 10:04:28 AM
I remember when all the rage was about XII and I do have a lot of complains about XII, and there were some people trying to defend it while a lot more bashed it, and now I see myself on the other side of the table. I loved this game and sure good production values have a big impact on it but I like for a lot more reasons than that. Although I have to agree that it being streamlined was a bad choice in some aspects in others I think it was fine.

The music for me in this game was probably the best in the series but that's not much because I loved every single entry OST except for IX.

About the audio balance Prime Mover is talking about, in the japanese version there's no problem in it. This may have been another poor localization job.
808  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: September 19, 2010, 11:12:01 PM
changing subject, I've gone back to play Strange Journey after saying I would drop it. While I still have my complains about the dungeon crawling aspects of it, it is really fun if I don't push the 40 min mark. In short bursts I'm finding this game to be a blast. After spending more than 20 hours on it and reaching half of the game and I keep going back to it I just can't say I don't like it (or else I would have dropped it sooner).

I finally got my hands of DDS 1, and when I played about 30 minutes of it I knew I'd love it but I have to finish a game before starting this one or else my head will explode. I already have 3 SMT games started (Nocturne, Strange Journey, Persona 3 Portable and even Persona 1 on psp but this one I'll hardly get back).
809  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Odin Sphere getting HD Ports on: September 19, 2010, 12:26:00 PM
I loved Odin Sphere right up until I couldn't get any further. Crap that game was hard. For me. I really wasn't that good at it.
Same here; I stopped at the second to last boss in the final book as I just couldn't do it. I wasn't that good at it either. I wonder if you will be able to import PS2 saves?

I don't think you guys were bad because if so that makes us 3.
I was doing pretty good until some obscenely hard bosses so I had to use my gameshark. I thought the stories were just too good to miss.
Those that kept turning you into a frog and all, they make Demon's Souls look easy.
810  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FINAL FANTASY XIII on: September 18, 2010, 11:33:18 PM
Good for you then that it does have both languages but that makes me wonder: why doesn't SquareEnix doesn't do this from scratch ? It's not like it's cheaper to buy a version that it's not in your region and in Japan they do charge a lot more for the new games.
The that do complain about some voice acting, like myself, could have it original and the ones that don't mind get their dub, everybody happy and more money in their pockets.

These times most companies are fully aware a lot of fans wants the option to have both audios and even if the media has some limitations of space, as the 360, Wii or PSP they could at least give it as a free DLC. On the PSP it could be even better, they could release 2 versions on PSN, one with american dub other with original japanese voices. Depending of the characters one or two bad actors can ruin the mood of the game.

But that is past. What I'd really like to see is an asian version like the one you have for Versus XIII. Dual audio and selectable subtitles.
