For famitsu's 40s they are giving like candy these days, I think that those which belong to new IPs or not that much hyped games are for real, the rest, simply bought. For exemple, 428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de has no reason to receive a 40 unless they really think it deserved it or even Bayonetta on the 360, sure this one comes from the creator of Devil May Cry but let's be honest, it's a new IP and it's not a spin of of Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy.

As for DQIX, I think I'll start as a Mage, I liked Jessica variety of skills in DQ8, unlike Yangus who had nothing better to do, but at least he hit really good.

I've got the game but haven't started yet because I was trying to finish Strange Journey, but I decided to move on and get started with Dragon Quest IX. So, since only one party member is permanent, anybody has a recommendation so far for which class to pick or it doesn't matter ?
I know you can change it later and even make a party, but never knows when the game forces you to go alone during part of it.

I quote you on that, the dungeons are way to long, they sometimes feel more like a chore.

About chinese food, don't feel bad because japanese people eat a lot of pasta (not in the italian way) and if you're not into sushi or sashimi you could try yakisoba while playing Persona 4 (I can't remember for sure but I think I did eat it sometime while playing P3 or P4, as I used to order it a lot!
889  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: July 12, 2010, 07:26:42 PM
I decided today that I'll simply not play Strange Journey anymore, which I found hard to do but felt like I had to. The overall game is good but in every sector we go the higher the floor the more boring it gets, it almost feels like a drag. The maps get so confused and complicated, but most of them are bearable but the parts with invisible paths )where we can't see our way, and now in Sector D we have some walking floors as well. Unless I use a map in gamefaqs or something it would take me forever, oh and I should not forget to mention the invisible doors.

I find it kinda sad because the mood of the game is good, the plot is interesting, and all the bonuses that come along with most SMT games but these shortcomings along with a game where you have to be on your toes to not die, and get lost and not being able to advance ...

Anyone else felt like it while playing ? Maybe I'm in a more streamlined RPG mood, I don't know, I may come back for it, but definitively not soon.

HAHAHA not sure what you mean but I'm laughing.
I was just surprised that a game I didn't like much in the past could be so much better with some tunning. More grown characters, less of that teenagers having ice cream and such. Not to mention the gameplay itself.
891  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Last Story - FIrst Trailer Ever! on: July 09, 2010, 05:25:07 PM
I thought the video looked really cool and the battle system seemed different, especially from the same dull and boring turn based Sawaguchi makes on everything he touches. (I don't mean turn based are bad, just that his turn based end up being more boring than they are worth)

I can't express myself at how lucky I am for this game not looking anything like FFIX, sorry we're not on the same boat lol.
Honestly I'm glad Sawaguchi's taking a chance and doing an RPG a bit out of his usual doing. Instead of trying an Dragon Quest clone (Blur Dragon) or a really bad Final Fantasy clone (Lost Odyssey) he's finally making something new.
892  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PsP) on: July 09, 2010, 05:10:28 PM
I've just seen the import review of Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep. I'm also playing the import version but before starting I was a little scared because my japanese is far from perfect but it's getting better as time goes. Back to the game, it's awesome!
I'm loving it! I'm playing as Aqua, mostly because of the three characters she felt easier for me, especially in her description when they said she was the expert in magic (that is keyword for me to "choose this character") but I could've also played as Ven just as nice, just Terra felt a little stiff.

I have to confess, I have not liked previous Kingdom Hearts game, not everything but especially the combat. In KH1 it was a mess to choose spells and items, some worlds felt a little dragged and I felt unfortunate because I liked the story and all (at least what I saw of it). KH2 I just played the beggining but since I had some gripes with the first I was discouraged to play it, so I passed on it.

Birth By Sleep, is not only a great game, but one of the best games I've played this year, for me it's right next to Mass Effect 2 and Bayonetta. I won't go too far since someone just reviewed the game but suffice to say that everything feels polished (maybe I'll right a review myself when I finish it). Even the minigames on it which in most RPGs are just a cheap way to get money/items or not fun in here they are quite good, not Triple Triad good(FFVIII card game) but still fun.

Putting short, I was not even a KH fan to begin with and I loved this game, I can't imagine how fans will feel about it!

I agree with you on the father daughter thing but the main character, I mean, he could have been more charismatic. His design is so weird that it makes me not wanna play the game. I'll surely overlook this if I were to play it but not only he's as ugly he can be, his clothes are the weirdest things ever, even for japanese RPG standards. They knew he wasn't that great of character otherwise they wouldn't have made another character for the japanese version of the game.
894  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Shiniest New Sword on: July 06, 2010, 01:39:10 PM
I vote for Resonance of Fate, as it's not too confusing and yet it is greatly customizable.
I liked Final Fantasy X as well, as again it was not hard to grasp the gist of it, the only hard thing was finding the items needed to make yourself a killer weapon.

I'm also on the waiting list for the HD artwork, maybe I can try making one too.

I also love this game, I'm still in chapter 13, so soon it'll be over but I'm not rushing it. I'm doing all the missions, collecting bezels, and everynow and then I try to clean all the hexes on a certain floor. And after beating it there'll also be the Arena and Neverland to keep me occupied for a long time.
896  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Trinity Universe Or Nier on: July 05, 2010, 01:41:12 PM
Every now and then I think about picking up Nier. From what I hear, good story and really good music are a plus but that watered down hack and slash feel put it down for me, even more than the not so great graphics.
I'll probably wait a little longer to see if I want this one, as for when I start to urge again for a new RPG it'll probably be a little closer to end of the year, so I'll pick either Fallout, Nier or Atelier Rorona but seeing as Nier is old it'll probably be very cheap.

You know what makes me sad about this game, that they didn't give us the option to chose between the ugly old main character or the girl-looking guy the japanese version got. I mean, how big can another character model and a few different lines be? In PS3 there's no excuse for space on disk, and of the 360 also believe there is plenty of space considering the game is not pushing it to its limits in terms of visuals. Hell, even if they don't wanna give it for free, at least as a DLC.

After seeing the picture of the interview with Dengeki I thought I would try to read but that would take a while (but at least most of kanjis had furigana) and then sharing some with my fellow RPG fans, but before doing so I thought of looking for a translation, and I found it. There aren't many places with it, and some had dead links, so I'll just put here.

Q: Is this a real-time screenshot weíre looking? The image quality is very good.
A:Yes itís an image in real-time using the real hardware. We aim to improve the quality youíre seeing now even further. As of now we canít share more details in full scale right now, so we removed the menus and subscreens where it shows Noctis expression (image projected on the subscreen).

Q: Were the party members also there originally?
A: Yes, we removed because we havenít formally announced their weapons and clothes yet.

Q: The exquisiteness and shades are like a photograph taken from real life.
A: Indeed, weíre using physical calculations to determine the movement of the clouds. By this time it allow us to filter sunlight and others on Versus XIII.

Q:Is the cliff to the wilderness & the Gas Station set in the same location?
A: Yes in the back of the Store is the cliff to the extended wilderness. You can walk all the way, to everything you see but the mountains.

Q:Whatís this giant Enemy on the other screen?
A: Itís a Military Behemoth and he actually bears a huge sword in his back. As for this pictures, the battle screen were on the screen but we omitted it.

Q: The street of Shinjuku is real.
A:Yes, itís our model for this, even the bicycle lanes and crosswalks are decipted. But the sense of distance has been changed a bit since the last time. Right out of the city you encounter the wilderness with electric wires every as itís this kind of territory for this country.

Q: This region, It is only the Prologue, the early stages, nature is so even there.
A: Movement around this area is easy because you can use a car. Getting on and off the car can be done anytime, but only not possible to go all the way through it because it leads to a region underwater that has been shown on promotional trailers before.

Q: Monsters appear on the field?
A: (Laughter)ÖYes, there are monsters that appear on the field; Some staff were doing the tests and were surprised by how good looking some are in the evening sun.

Q: Are the battles seamless, what about the world?
A: Itís basically seamless and we aim to make it even more seamless, but there are loadings between big areas.

Q:Information disclosure, is very restrict as of now.
A: Development is very advanced along and according to expectations weíre taking steady steps; wait at ease please, information on Versus XIII will come. Moreover, weíre making preparations for a Big announcement.

Q: You can actually see a signboard and things written inside in the screenshot?
A:The signboard is still temporary even though the inside of the Gas Station is modeled after the Stations in the US in detail. Itís possible to go up there using the stairs.

Q: Do you play in this perspective the whole game?
A: Yes. The camera basically sits in this position. We decided to priority to the characterís presence and the world; that said we decided to scrap the over the shoulder perspective of the world.

In all, it sounds good!
I hope this "big announcement" is to be done in Tokyo Game Show, and that being a close release date.

Parasite Eve is one my all time favorite games, so there's no way I'm missing this one. Day one for sure!
But since they said they are changing the gameplay AGAIN, I hope they try a style more like Resident Evil 4 or Uncharted, instead of that crappy that RE1 scheme they did in parasite eve 2.
I hated it back then, the controls of PE2, so I ended up not playing it, but this week I decided to dig it up (one of the few PS1 games I kept after selling my ps1).
899  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales studio facing financial problems? on: June 23, 2010, 05:29:34 PM
Never understood the appeal of Dragon Quest; but that doesn't seem to stop it from ALWAYS hitting number one on sales charts. ...what a shitty ass series.

I second that! Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive ...

About tales, well I've only played Vesperia to the end and liked it. After I went out to play Abyss and it is fun but somehow I felt like "I've been there, done that".
It seems that by having to teams milking the franchise is actually killing it instead of making it more profitable (like they probably intended). Think of the Call of Duty series, after COD2 they are just spamming sequels one after the other, but the difference is that COD is selling like 20 millions units and Tales was never that popular to begin with. (Not like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest)

This is looking great!

I wonder if any of the developments of the game came from reactions to FF13...and its lack of linearity (bcause this sounds perfect)

Maybe Nomura wasn't thinking specifically on XIII's reactions when making the game, but I'm sure he was when choosing what to show to the public, just a response saying: "Here you can explore things to your liking"

I liked the gas station scene and the above because I like this darker tone in movies and such, instead of putting it at the time you want, just put it into everything and give more emphasis when it's actually required.
And the 3rd picture, I just love that! A big city at night just looks great.

I just hope I don't have to wait another 3 years for this to come.
