I'm with Adapheon.  The rune system will offer an insane amount of character customization and style.  Just look at the rune page on the D3 website.  These stones don't just change the look of the skill, but they radically change the effects.  Now, combine these stones with six available active skills at any one time, and you have an insane number of options available to the player.  Whether or not top tier skills completely outclass lower tier skills or what kinds of cooldown periods will be imposed remains unknown, but I'm super excited to try it all out.  I've said it on the podcast and in my reviews; I don't really care about minor statistical increases in my abilities and stats.  I like the idea of my plague of toads becoming one giant toad that freakin' eats enemies!

A little off topic, I know, but I've really had it with the Diablo forums these days.  I understand many of the complaints coming from the community about D3, but a lot of it is just frustrating to read.  The addition of a cauldron to destroy vendor trash and keep me immersed in the world is a good thing, imo, as is taking out the skill point allocation that could create a real nightmare if you were pouring points into the wrong attributes.  Seems like the community is complaining about everything with this game because Blizzard's making changes to a ten year old game that has been elevated to an almost God-like status.  Look, I love D2, but there are things that can make the game better, and Blizzard is taking some of the best parts of new games in the genre (companions and the ability to sell things without going back to town from Torchlight) in order to make the experience friendly for the user.  That doesn't mean the game is "noob-friendly" or more mainstream.  It just seems to play better.  This all started with the complaints about the art style three years ago when it was first announced, and now everyone feels the need to flame the game whenever a new feature is mentioned. Feels like these people would have complained about the addition of a run feature in D2 because it took away from the atmosphere of D1, or some nonsense like that. 

Again, I understand the latest batch of complaints about constant internet connections and the auction house.  These are totally legitimate concerns.  I'm mostly talking about the gameplay stuff because that's what I'm interested in.  The fact that I don't have to worry about leveling up skeleton mastery over and over again because now the skills get stronger as you level up and you get a new skill every freakin' level is awesome!

Watched the video.  At least the guy pointed out the counter arguments, but I feel that they are more valid than his "Blizzard wants to make money and this will break PVP" theory.

Look, I'm done arguing about this stuff.  It's all hyperbole on both sides.  Blizzard wants money and they want to protect their player-base.  People were already buying equipment through third party suppliers, so Blizzard stepped in to take over.  That's it.  Everyone saying that they won't buy the game and that this broke D3 is kidding themselves just like those who were outraged over the lack of LAN in StarCraft 2.

Of course Blizzard wants successful money making products. I just don't see Diablo 3 generating any where near the amount of money that WoW brings to the company. Are they going to be happy with the extra income? Of course. But D3 will not replace the sacred cow.

Oh, of course they're going to make a profit on this whole thing.  That's part of supporting a service that involves real world money.  But with the amount of bank that Blizzard pulls in from WoW, I doubt they're looking at Diablo 3 to generate significant income.

I personally think the auction house is a good thing.  While I don't plan on spending real money for any items in D3, a quick internet search shows that there are tons of sites out there that specialize in this stuff.  For Blizzard to make it a part of the game and protect consumers from shaddy deals is a good thing.  No one is forcing you to use actual green for anything.

As for the constant internet connection, it's a bummer but totally understandable.  We're talking about a game that is borderline MMO at this point.  Everything is based around skill development and equipment, and if Blizzard can't monitor every character at all times then there will be hacked characters.  Again, it's a bummer that they didn't add a single player feature for offline play, but it shows that Blizzard wants people to use B-net and create an actual community for the game.

I understand the fan outrage over this stuff, but if anything it shows Blizzard's intentions and focus with the product.  They want people to safely and fairly interact with each other.  If they don't put these measures in then they could have another "duping" crisis on their hands.

I feel horrible having to resort to youtube videos, but I had to do it twice on night seven.  I just got tired of screwing myself up because the puzzle only had one real solution.  Admittedly this doesn't have often in the game, but it really frustrates when other sections allow for a great deal of thought and creativity.  I find that the game's difficulty fluctuates between easy to absolutely insane based on the linearity of the puzzles.

Despite my flip out on this game, I think Catherine is quite good and a worthy purchase for those looking for a quirky game.  I just think the game is scoring a little high given some of the problems others and I have outlined.

Just got up to the sixth night on normal (I think it's 6-3 on youtube, strangely enough), and the game's systems and mechanics are completely working against me at this point.  The third level on this night is more about memorization and guessing than actual skill.  You have to rely on pushing block out to let others fall, which is probably the worst designed part of the game.  The camera gets all spastic, you can't see what's connected, and you're really just trying in vain to see what happens.  I've only gotten through the first part of this stage twice based on blind stupid luck.  Every other level up until this point has been hard but fair, but this has officially crossed the line.  The slippery controls (I love how X does almost everything in this game, including acting as a suicide button if nothing's under you), awful camera and randomness has all come together to make this stage absolutely brutal and stupid.  It's pure trial and error at this point.  I was loving the game but this stage shows the severe limitations in the mechanics. 

Looked on youtube to get a couple of hints and I was able to pass the stage with ease.  Overall, the puzzles are fun and engaging, but a few of them are way out of balance.  I've struggled with two or three levels that required precise movements, otherwise you wouldn't be able to complete them.  Given the chaotic nature of the game along with the fiddly controls and camera, these were very close to controller throwing rage fits.  I don't mind when there's one solution to a puzzle, but screwing yourself completely and not even realizing it is not my idea of fun.

For the record:

Xenogears: A tremendous achievement of storytelling that (much like Eva) ran out of funding and time, resulting in half of an awesome game and half of something... else...

Kingdom Hearts:  I loved the first game because it was you and Donald Duck on a magical adventure.  KH2 had some great gameplay and awesome set-piece moments, but it felt like the series got away from the core roots that made it so whimsical and fun.  As of late, the series has been milked and processed to the point of complete garbage, and I'm not even sure if a third core entry could right the ship.

TWEWY:  That shit is awful.  Seriously, though, the gameplay just baffled me and I had no interest in the main character.

We often have to argue back and forth about games that we cover here on the site, and Dawn of War 2 caused a pretty big battle.  I was on the losing side, but I honestly see where the other viewpoint is coming from.  If we reviewed every game with RPG elements we would pretty much be covering everything.  RPG elements have become synonymous with almost every type of game out there, so we try to pick the games that are most closely related to the genre, if that makes sense.

That's actually a pretty interesting idea for discussion.  I've only sold back two games (Deus Ex for PS2 and Street Fighter 4) because I really like to have the collection and I love to go back and replay games every once in a while.  I find that with disposable income comes some choices that are based around having the game more than actually playing it, however.  I've bought a few games that I haven't had a chance to play, but I knew I wanted them because they are either very difficult to find or because I may want to play them in the future.
