19  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The demise of the Sega Saturn and why we chose the consoles we did on: August 05, 2015, 07:02:18 PM
I owned a Saturn. The biggest problem the thing had was it was so expensive at the time. It also did not have that many great games available for quite a while and by then most of the people I knew wrote it off, or were soundly in the PS1 camp.  The original controller that came with the thing was also god awful.

Edit:The reason why I chose to eventually buy  it  was because I was a Sega fanboy. The System having games like Guardian Heroes, Nights, Panzer Dragon...Etc  made the choice easier, despite the flaws the system had.  I also had a PS1 and N64.  PS1 was king, while the Saturn solidly remained my #2 system for that generation.

The thing with a lot of LN is that they end up as cesspool of ultimate male power fantasy.
From the few I've tried reading, I'd say that if the main character starts off powerful because of xyz reason... that's a very bad sign.

Hell, all you really need as an indicator are the title being way too long, and a cover that's totally blank outside of the 'obviously a waifu' and said title.

"Re:Monster" disagrees with that one though =/

The manga is kinda OK since the mangaka is cutting a lot of the 'less desirable' content.
In my mind, this is the mangaka after reading a chapter of Re:monster thinking of how much rework/cutting will be needed:

«Oh look, they just defeated an elven army, enslaved every surviving men and women and then drugged them all until they had so few of their wits left, they 'willingly' accepted rape...»

Read the 1st chapter of the manga. Expected the rape after I saw that it was based on goblins in Japanese fantasy. Goblins in those settings if its not comical  tend to rape anything that moves. The fact that they need human females to reproduce is  Hgame/Hentai  101 for rape incoming.

...is this serious or not? I've never read the series and this is coming from Japan so I could believe either way...

It's a (in)famous scene from the VN.

The anime was less obvious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOjhTIuU_J8

The legendary Hiroyuki doujin  ^_^
Both Fate and Tsukihime had some of the most horrid sex scenes ever....just cringe worthy.

You haven't looked very hard, have you (this is not a dare, I in fact, envy you). SAO easily trumps the worst that Tsukihime ever did (dear SAO writer, can you please end at least one of your story arcs without rape or recovery sex immediately after the rape; tia) and that's just one of the countless badly written LNs out there (and that's not even going near anything beyond that).
'I think  you are misunderstanding me.It was how it was written that made those works cringe worthy to me. Nasu is just terrible with ero. The scenes  just came off awkward and flat out weird.

This is not just for RPGs but also (especially) VNs, I wish the majority of English  Indie community would not just try to out "J" their respective mediums. Something new and different then the standard fare Story wise would be nice. If I want  tired cliche and tropes I'd just go to the source instead of getting the same with way lower production values.  Something besides the teen protagonist  and his/her rag tag group of adventurer friends save the world, with as many tropes as possible thrown in along the way.

like what the hell is this

Those screenshots look like they're in the wrong order. And the legs aren't the only thing wrong about that character's anatomy.
They are not in order. I just uploaded those to show how ridiculous some of the character designs  are.

D...did they put her legs on backwards?
I don't think I have ever seen any leg armor more bizarre then that.

Watched Chaos Dragon .......some of the worst cg I have ever seen in an anime. Seriously its ps1 level bad in some spots.  The animation was also practically non existent, and the outfits are very JRPGish in a worse then Star Ocean 4 kinda way. Disappointing since Urobutcher and Nasu were involved in this. I will watch and see if this gets better out of morbid curiosity. It definitely did not leave a good impression after episode 1.
behold the dragon.

29  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: AGE interested in bringing the highly acclaimed Muv Luv series to English market on: July 02, 2015, 02:37:30 PM
Didn't MuvLuv start out as an eroge and later versions were sanitized?  So the question is whether the English releases will be the adult or all-ages versions.  That's a tricky one because all-ages has wider marketing potential, but the hardcore VN fans will cry foul at the adult content being removed, much like they did for If My Heart Had Wings.  I don't know or have sales data, but I wonder if that hurt IMHHW at all?
Wouldn't miss anything of value even if there were no adult content version. Sure there will people that will bitch and complain but its not like IMHHW where an actual route got  gutted a long with a bunch of unnecessary edits. The only thing i'd worry about is the
Code:
gorn edited. There is one scene that would lose a great deal of its emotional impact without  it, cause its pretty brutal

(NSFW Warning: Gore)

No thank you. Total Eclipse was one of the few Mecha anime I outright dropped after a couple episodes, I'd rather not see more of that shlock...
Total Eclipse is a side story spinoff set inside the  setting of Muv luv Alternative . It is frankly not very good, and has nothing to do with the main series.

And this is on top of the fact that the anime itself was just plain bad.

But the Muv Luv series does illustrate one of my bigger problems with VNs being called 'well-written' and not 'well-written for a VN'. You could have the most fantastic setting, or the most tragically violent, but no matter what, you're not escaping the male power-fantasy nature of it (well, aside from Otomones which are Yaoi fan-bait). The entire genre can barely operate outside of the Harem genre and their scope almost never extends past the male protagonist's immediate circle of associate + concubines save for his own personal antagonist(s), and it colors the hell out of the narrative.

That said, I'm always up for something that has the US nuke the living hell out of Canada just because we baka-gaijins are always looking for an excuse to let the ultimate evil/unforgivable sins/nukes fly and proceed to sit back and happily munch down on our Freedom Fries and Apple Pies while we watch the rest of the world fucking burn. #FuckEngland #HappyFourth #BakaGaijin #CanadaDay
Less typical power fantasy, more wish-fulfillment for the reader. Most story focused VN protagonists are pretty "average" at best with nothing being exceptional about them except maybe intellect, this is especially prevalent in romantic comedies. There are  some VNs  mainly shounen oriented ones that go the pure power fantasy direction though.  The genre can also function just fine without being "harem"  Saya no Uta,  Planetarian, Swan Song and Liar Soft's " What a Beautiful" series  Are great VNs without having A harem aspect to them. Also there are more graphic adventure oriented VNs like 999 or Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward  that are not even romance focused at all.
