wtf was the big deal about this game anyhow?  What am I missing?

Monster World IV officially released outside of Japan.

Though, years before the announcement of the collection you could play MWIV translated in English on your PC with an emulator and such. I played it for a while, and it is fun. But like many old titles is one of those games that you want to play for curiosity more than anything else.

Also, The happy console gamer did a review of the entire series a while ago.

Asbel... I'm not sure yet. All I know right now is that I don't like his main outfit. It's like Final Fantasy drank too much and pucked all over him. Actually, that's how I feel about a lot of the designs. Too many (mismatched) colours, too many buckles, too many ribbons... There's just too much going on.

Digression:

JRPGs -- and many other Japanese games, and anime too -- are in serious danger of fatal zazz saturation.

Some zazz is good to have. Think of it like putting sugar in coffee. A sugar cube or two makes a cup of coffee less bitter, while some zazz adds flavor to a game and its characters. But just like you can ruin coffee by pouring in too much sugar, over-zazzing your game makes it irritating instead of bland. Remember back when anthromorphs with 'tude were in vogue? Sonic's 'tude levels were within acceptable parameters, and it's still hard to deny the appeal of his Sega Genesis incarnations. But then you also have Bubsy the Bobcat, who was pumped full of more focus-group tested 'tude than any single piece of intellectual property should ever be asked to contain, and if anyone actually remembers Bubsy, I'm sure their memories are not pleasant.

Here's an example of the progression of zazz saturation: a timeline of SNK fighting game flagship characters.

Terry and Ryo look like two guys out of a martial arts flick. Iori and K' look like they're from an anime. Alba and Luise look like they're from a Japanese fashion magazine. I understand that with so many other products on the market, designers have to make their franchise and its properties stand out, but it's starting to get ridiculous. Other examples include the gulf between the characters and aesthetics of Mobile Suit Gundam and Gundam SEED, Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2001), and to cite a stateside example, the differences between the 2D Prince of Persia titles and The Two Thrones. Style over substance.

- Final Fantasy IV: But I sure do miss the 90's

Last year I remember seeing Sega announcing on their blog that the Monster World Collection was coming to PSN too.

Tokitowa (Time & Eternity) full resolution screens

Yep, still looks pretty.

Is Lightning hard?

Done.

If you have Sazh in your party the battle will not last much. And you are not the only one hoping for a hard mode or something similiar, I too feel that the game was too easy, a bit tricky at times but manageable without a guide.

You should have got a PSP or a Vita instead...

Yomi is easily either the hardest enemy in the entire game or the most annoying one. Though Raspatil is pretty hard at times too, takes me a while to kill him to get all the gil he gives.
3743  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: March 13, 2012, 05:37:22 PM
Finally got him.

This ending that I got called "Beneath a Timeless Sky" left me wanting to see more, same thing with "The Future is Hope". Why do you do this to us Trolliyama? ;_;
3744  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Journey - thatgamecompany's new title on: March 13, 2012, 04:55:44 PM
So, is it true that is just two hours long? I usually dislike knowing how long a game is but I heard accidentally how long Journey was in a podcast and at the moment this seems like a $10 purchase for me.

Maybe I should wait for a discount in the store later. Though, those discount are always for PSN+ members... and I'm not one of them.

Besides Nier this will be my first real hardcore JRPG for this generation. Sorry, Demon's and Dark souls don't count

What did you say?
3746  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: XSEED bringing Ys: Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin to Steam on: March 13, 2012, 04:27:24 PM
I'm definitely interested in Ys Origin. Anyone out there play it before? Thoughts?

See for yourself.

Hell, it'd be hot if they got ported to PSN/XBLA.

Don't make me want things that I know I can't get.

I am the only one that is surprised to see a guy that is 40 years in a JRPG? That's what I call a step in the right direction.

Trying to get the last paradox ending at the moment. Caius has been putting a good fight, so much so in fact that it already made me mad twice. :T

The battle is the one when Serah has to fight alone against Caius. I can't stagger him as often as I would like but is just a thing of having patience at this point.

Also thanks for the tips!
3749  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: March 13, 2012, 12:55:21 AM
I know. Is just that there are some monsters that barely appear to fight like the Albino Lobo, and instead of wasting time waiting for him to appear a few times more I just rather throw a Librascope at him.

There was a guy that after 7 hours of searching battles with the Albino Lobo he completed to collect all of his data. Poor fool. :|
3750  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: March 12, 2012, 09:06:22 PM
I really should buy some Librascope to finish the bestiary. Didn't notice that I missed a Gate Seal for Archylte Steppe too...

Ether way I never thought that I was gonna put more that 100+ hours into XIII-2. Haven't put that much time not in even in FFIX, and I love FFIX.
