I'm slowly learning how everything works in Vagrant Story, awesome game.

Actually, unanimous reaction seems to be in favor of that.  Not that FF13-1 set a high bar in anything other than graphics.

That's the problem, anything can be better than XIII and SE really doesn't have to make an effort to do another game set in the same setting/universe. I really got bored watching the game in the stream and that's mostly because the it looks exactly like XIII to me and I'm not going to even waste my time in giving it a chance.

And honestly, I didn't enjoy the characters in XIII so that's another reason of no matter how "better" XIII-2 might be I am not not giving it a chance. If anything, I only want SE to release FFType-0 and start giving us more information about Versus XIII.

He sometimes lists Nier and Demon's Souls too, it's just that he seems to put those other games on about the same level as Demon's Souls and Nier. As for his age, lets just say he's been playing RPGs since the NES era, yet he doesn't seem as tied down to the past as most. Hell, last time I asked him what his favorite RPGs were the oldest game he listed was Morrowind and King's Field IV. Granted, he seems to see the good in all RPGs, I think he's definitely exaggerating the quality of most PS3 JRPGs just because there aren't as many to play. Even if they are his kinda games, there are better games in those niches, some of which I'm sure he's played.

Huh. He has been playing RPGs way before I did... still, it seems that he says what are his favorites by how his mood is, which is something that happens to us all really.

Either way putting games like Nier or Demon's Souls on the same level as Neptunia is just wrong in my opinion. And is not a thing of being tied to the past or even nostalgia is just something of having standards after years and years of playing games of your favorite genre.

A little bit more of KOF music but this time it has the original and arrange version of each track:

The King of Fighters '94 - Ne!
The King of Fighters '96 - Big Shot!
The King of Fighters '96 - Fairy

I finally have an excuse to post this video.

I still feel that the "just ok" games get elevated to awesome status because of the general lack of any real competition.

I think I know what you mean. I have a friend who says the PS3 is a must-have if you like JRPGs, but when ever I ask him what great games the PS3 has, he tends to list stuff like Ar Tonelico Qoga, Trinity Universe, and Hyperdimension Neptunia - games that are okay in most respects, but not really that great.

Man, I don't want to sound like an asshole but how old is he? I can't imagine anyone that has played RPGs since at least the PSone and/or PS2 days saying that those games are great. Personally I think that those titles are garbage, but hey, there is an audience for those types of RPGs and there's nothing wrong about that. But what happenned with games like Valkyria Chronicles, Nier, Demon's Souls or even Disgaea 4?

Granted these games I mentioned do not have a turn-based battle system but gaming has changed a lot in the last few years and that type of battle system (for what I understand) was created back then because of the limitations of the systems themself in those days (dunno about SRPGs though, those games try to present themself in other manner than your typical JRPGs).
4043  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: xmas thread 20!! on: December 17, 2011, 02:37:02 AM
Maybe I make me a present by buying Catherine, I was searching for the game this week and I ended up buying a PSN card of $20 and the mexican magazine of Club Nintendo that comes with a huge poster of Skyward Sword this month.

I would love to get the new Zelda along with KOF XIII (with the soundtrack bonus) but the family is short in money. And either way, if I got some money in Christmas it would be nice but presents is not really a thing that bothers me to get in this season.

Now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing a copy of 999 in one of the stores where I usually buy games from. Maybe I did see a copy of it but they had like one and maybe two on sale. Sometimes that happens. :/

4047  Media / Miscellaneous Games / If I Were in a Sealed Room With a Girl, I'd Probably XXX, for the 3DS on: December 16, 2011, 07:21:08 PM
Some of you might remember Senran Kagura a side-scrolling action game for the 3DS that it's big selling point was the concept of boobs in 3D when it was announced, or Conception: Please Deliver My Child!! for the PSP in where the protagonist have to convice one of twelve girl to make babies with to save the world from doom, or Akiba's Trip also for the PSP that was about stripping vampire-like creatures off their clothes to expose their bodies to the sunlight to defeat them in Akihabara.

Well now we have this, and according to andriasang the premise of the game goes like this:

"You play as a high school student named Kouhei. The game is split into two worlds, the "sealed room world" and the real world.

In the real world, Kouhei is a student who has the hots for three girls at his school. There's Kasumi Akishino, a shy girl who's in Kouhei's class. There's Tsubasa Itou, the most popular girl at school, who's said to have turned down over 100 boys. And there's Kokoro Tougo, Kouhei's childhood friend and two years his junior. Although Kouhei considers Kokoro to be like a little sister, he's recently started taking interest in her.

The sealed room world is a place that exists in Kouhei's dreams. He for some reason appears as a fairy in these dreams. As you might have guessed, the girls in the dream world are the same as the girls in the real world.

The girls find themselves locked away in the sealed room, and you must help them find key fragments in order to open the lock. This involves giving textual hints to the girl. For example, you can write the word "vacuum cleaner" to make the girl pick up a vacuum cleaner and use it to aid in escaping. If the girl wants to grab a carton of milk from up on a shelf out of her reach, you can enter "chair" and she'll climb up on a chair.

Because you're a fairy, you can fly around the room using the slide pad. You can use this to easily scan the environment, or you can get in for some closeups of the girls. You can control the view via the gyro sensor and use buttons to zoom in and out.

The real and dream worlds are linked up. The girls may reveal some information to you as a fairy, including their feelings for Kouhei, which you can use to help with your attempts at getting close to the girls in the real world."

- Same article with screenshots from andriasang

So that's the game. It doesn't sound particulary exciting but is certainly a curiosity that I'm pretty sure we will never see over here because we are too busy playing Mario Kart 7.

If you are interested in knowing more about it go here to read more articles and I'll leave the official website here too because why not. Now go ahead and make jokes about this and discuss that this is why Japanese games aren't as good as they were before "in your time" you old fart.
4048  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: PlayStation Vita Announced (Feb 22, $249/$299 for WiFi/3G+WiFI) + some games on: December 16, 2011, 04:36:54 PM
from andriasang:

Mario is lined up for PlayStation Vita... are you?
Vita games ship without instruction manuals
PlayStation Vita launches with first Firmware update

Does games not having a manual affect sales? I know it sounds ridiculous but I can imagine a lot of people annoyed by this. And it also kinda makes more sense just buying the digital version with the exception of the collector's editions that some games will have in the future.

Atlus and Xseed comes to mind.
4049  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The NEW Game Journal on: December 16, 2011, 04:16:38 PM
Bought God Hand and Vagrant Story last night.

God Hand is amazing, just amazing. I'm playing in Easy mode though since the game in Normal is pretty hardcore to start with. And Vagrant Story is making me feel stupid with the huge learning curve that it has, or at least that it seems to have. Either way, I'm pretty impressed by the amount of detail that the game has and it constantly reminds me of the first MGS which is always a good thing in my book.

So yeah, maybe I should put all my attention into Vagrant Story first since the story really got me hungry to see more, but I have to say one thing; The fact that Square Enix never did a remake for the PSP of this like Tactics Ogre is truly a shame and a huge missed opportunity in my opinion. I'm definitely not holding my breath to see a remake for the Vita at this point.

Oh, one thing that I wanted to ask for a while about Tactics Ogre for the PSP. I know that SE did some DLC for it, they did release it or not?
4050  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: December 16, 2011, 04:08:29 PM
Really, another sequel? I guess square was  not kidding when they said they were going to whore out Fabula Nova Crystallis

Mm.  You'll never see me complain about a sequel if the game is good.

Thing is that for all the things they fix it still looks like XIII but with more stuff and polished, that's why I said that is arguable how enjoyable this might end up being.

Right now though I don't know what to think of the game honestly.

Didn't they say that FFXIII-2 had multiple endings?

They did? I've never saw an article in Siliconera or Andriasang about that, weird. But if it has it would make sense giving the fact that XIII-2 has time travel and all that.
