That's pretty much the best explanation there is for why FFVIII is a good game. Also, there sure is a lot of flamebaiting going on by people that dislike FFVIII. Coming up with clever simplifications of, and analogies for, the game may be quite funny to you, but they are ultimately a terrible form of criticism because they don't actually address the game, they address an imaginary game you've created for comedic effect.

I've been thinking about buying FFVIII on PSN and giving the game another chance because like with XIII it was a game that I honestly enjoyed but I never really knew why part of me disliked the game so much, and it wasn't until recently that I noticed it was because I left myself go with the opinions that people have about it in the Internet.

Seriously, getting into this series around the mid-2000s was really hard with all the changes the series got in those days plus with all the mixed reception that every new game received.

If there is one thing I learned from this is that I never should take seriously what is said in the comment section, forums or articles when I read about a series of games I like because you willl end up just having an opinion that resembles the group of people that doesn't really like what you like in reality.

Oh right, and the most important part is that never someone should read a thread about Final Fantasy on NeoGAF, bunch of snobs.

Kid Icarus is going to come with a piece of plastic and a box art that gets "the Kirby treatment".

Day 1?
4039  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Endings in games on: January 15, 2012, 12:23:34 PM
Is a bit hard to explain but both endings made feel like you did all this just effort to see this? I appreciate when a game has the courage to slap you in the face with your expectations and giving something totally different, but those two endings made me like crap honestly, I felt like I didn't do anything after all the trouble I went with these characters.

I'm not saying that those two games are bad for that in any way but they just left me feeling really bad. Though, I can enjoy a sad or bad ending if it gives you some kind of "peace of mind".

Like in Deus Ex: Human Revolution for example. In that game nothing good happens from the beginning, especially for the main character but at least when everything was said and done it feels that you accomplish something even if you didn't have much choice and even with that the game let me feeling kinda cold but the experience was so good and everything was put together so well that I didn't mind much.

In comparison to RDR.

In where Marston tried really hard to live a normal life to give his son a good future, but he gets betrayed by the people he helps and kidnaped his family and kill him. 3 years later after that you see Jack (the son of Marston and Abigail) in front of the grave of his parents now both death ready to take revenge by becoming what he and his mother didn't want to see his son becoming; The same exact thing as his father, in others words, a criminal.

Oh and some of the characters that you meet in your adventure with Marston gets killed by X reason or not being happy in the way they want.

You don't liked the ending? Well, bad luck because that's how it ends.

Like I said before, is a really clever way to end that story but I didn't like that "shit happens" tone that the story keep throwing at you by the end. And probably that also was my first and last Rockstar game that I'll play because RDR give me a great experience but ruined everything with his ending for me.

And SotC? To not make this post longer I'll say that I didn't like the way how tricked I feel after killing those Colossi just for one girl which ends with you being sealed away in a land that no one can enter again. I feel more sorry for Agro though. That poor horse made my cry like baby the two times I manage to finish the game. ;_;

And I better stop here. I don't enjoy writing walls of texts but I hope that explains why I didn't like those two endings. I also hope seeing more experience like this from you guys, the one from Divinity 2 that Cyril mentioned is pretty frustrating.

Bought El Shaddai, Shadows of the Damned and downloaded the FFXIII-2 Demo. Should be fun.

I had no idea how to name this topic but I've been having this thing bothering me for a very long time now.

I sometimes wonder how endings in games affect people in a emotional way, because let's be honest there are some games that make you feel like crap after spending hours and hours of getting attached to the characters. Which can be good or a bad depending in how you see things.

In the last few years though I have come to enjoy many games with this "problem" but out of all the games I've played this are the ones that made me feel all awkward:

Metal Gear Solid 4
inFamous 2
Shadows of the Colossus
Red Dead Redemption

I enjoyed every bit from each of those titles but their endings really broke every hour of enjoyment that I had with them, with the exception of MGS4. More or less.

But the one I have the biggest annoyance is with RDR. Every single time I remember how great RDR was I always (always!) end up regretting playing it because of how it ends.

Now, the ending is very clever and is without a doubt the only way to finish that story, but the taste that left in my mouth was so bad. Is specially worse if you get attached to John Marston.

After finishing RDR I never wanted to play it again. Heck, I sold my copy of the game and the expansion for cheap. I know it might sound like hyperbole but I honestly can't stand that ending even if a small part of me appreciate it.

So the question goes like this; There has been games in your gaming life that have been ruined by their ending and make you feel all weird in the process?

This game should be bundle with apizza and beer (or, whatever you like to drink) for $30. Make it happen Capcom!
4043  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: January 14, 2012, 09:09:33 PM
Never forget that a review is only the opinion of one person and you can have a totally different view from that person. The problem is that most reviewers are subjective in their article. I used to reviews games for a website and even if I disliked one game, I did my best to stay objective trough my review.

I think that RPGFan does a good job on that most of the time.

Yeah I'll have that in mind. Sometimes I agree too much with one opinion and end up changing my point of view ruining my entire enjoyment of X thing. But like I said, I'm more careful with that now.

I love FFX-2.

It was upbeat, hectic and much more fun than I expected. It was wrong to call it FF though, maybe something like Gullwing Adventures.

Same here. After all the drama that FFX was (which I enjoyed a lot) I appreciated the change of tone. In part it reminded me of FFIX.

4045  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: January 13, 2012, 11:51:51 PM
@Leyviur & ZeronHitaro: Good points. I can't say much other than in those days more or less I was getting into Final Fantasy so when X-2 came out all the hate didn't affect me, same thing can be said about the movies and everything else when Square Enix started.

All of those huge articles about the franchise or even reviews wrote by people who started with the NES or SNES titles can really mess up with your opinion and enjoyment of the new games, I know that has happened to me. But nowadays I'm more careful in reading stuff like that.

Ya'll are scaring me, I'm @10 hrs into FFVIII and enjoying it, apears most think it goes downhill quickly soon....reminds me of what X became in many ways though and I loved X so I have hope....

Tell us what you think about it when you finish the Disc 1.
4047  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Merged Final Fantasy XIII-2 Thread on: January 13, 2012, 10:19:45 PM

4048  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur on: January 13, 2012, 09:44:03 PM
Been hearing the name of this for a while on the Bombcast but it wasn't until they did this really good podcast dedicated to Amalur (which you can check here) and in the last Random Encounter that I got interested in the game.

Sounds fun but I'll take the "wait and see" approach with this one since I'm not sure if this is gonna be my coup of tea.
4049  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: I'd like some recommendation on: January 13, 2012, 05:06:18 PM
A shame that Konami never released that Suikoden I&II Collection for the PSP over here. I would have bought it to give that series a chance, but yeah, getting at least the first one from PSN for $5.99 is not a bad deal.
4050  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dark Souls on: January 13, 2012, 04:56:51 PM
There are a lot of areas in the game in where they seem to be a path but is closed, so I can imagine them using of those spots for the DLC. But it would be kinda random to do.

Also a quick question: Did anyone know if the Pendant does something? Is one of the gifts that you can choose when you create your character and you can also get it from a certain NPC. I do know that you can trade the Pendant with Snuggly to get one Souvenir of Reprisal but it has some use other than that?
