Thank Anne Hathaway for that. Glad to hear whatever was ailing you isn't ailing you so hard anymore. Good health to all!

(Goes to eat some fried chicken and grape soda)
1337  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGfan Community Quiz Quiz Show! on: July 22, 2013, 08:26:31 AM
I have every other weekend off, so it seems the stars are misaligned.

I'm kinda in the same situation, so the next quiz will be in 3 weeks so I can get back to the original fortnightly schedule.

The next quiz will be Tokitowa - Time and Eternity...

lol no.

I don't know yet, I'll probably announce it next week. Researching to see if the Zelda answers were correct and not debatable was a nightmare I don't wanna have to go through again, so it will probably be a game I have actually played.
If you ever need some assistance, I'd be happy to do some question research for a game for you. Least I can do to repay the efforts you put forth with this.

If Sabin can Suplex a Ghost Train, then I should be able to give an F-5 or a Chokeslam to a tank these days.

Besides, how come every martial artist can punch the shit out of a robot or vehicle? Most of the time, it's heavy hitters that would sooner grapple you that would generally show off by bending a plate of steel or punching his way through a wall. I'm just saying why does it always have to be some asian martial art? They fucking love wrestling in japan, as seen by the fact that most pros train there. Gimme Greco from Chrono Cross or Rico from Xenogears. Hell, even Ziggy had a sleeperhold in Xenosaga 3 which was awesome.

You know, another thing I would like to see in rpgs and maybe action games in general are knockouts instead of just kills. Like if kill an enemy, you get more exp but less drops and maybe no ap, however a knockout or a surrender could have varied battle results. Things like that would give players more options in fights, especially in cases like rpgs where item accrual and specialized points for abilities or magic are always liked for things like low level runs and challenge modes.

Now this is more of a personal desire as a fan of wrestling, but I'd like to see more wrestling fighting maneuvers in rpgs. I'm a big fan of submission maneuvers and they don't see a lot of play in anything outside of wrestling  and suplexes don't fucking count. I wanna use a sleeper hold to choke someone out, then raid their pockets for new stuff and get ability experience for using a skillfull grab that will help me learn how to do something more destructive. Even more interesting would be a similar situation where instead of them getting knocked out they give up and offer rarer stuff for letting them go.Obviously this would only work on humanoid opponents but still....i like the idea greatly.

Been watching the newsroom's new season. First episode made a quick dig at SOPA which I enjoyed as they showed it EXACTLY for what it is. But it continued off pretty well from last season, though the opening obviously is further down the road since Will's being interviewed by lawyers  about spoilerific stuff.

People give this show a bum rep, but I like it. Olivia Munn's so hot and she plays a financial nerd which is interesting. Emily Mortimer is the only MILF I find attractive, and then there's Allison Pill, who's such a dainty ditsy dweeb that tries so hard to do the right thing in her eyes, it makes her adorable. Then the guys...Jeff Daniels plays pompous smartass so amazingly well, but his big brother moments sell him most. He really is the tough guy with a soft spot in the show. Dev Patel as the nerd fits so well and helps estrange him from that INSUFFERABLE airbender movie, and now that they're doing the occupy wall street stuff in show  he's probably gonna see even more play in show. John Gallagher is competent but very...idk...out of place I'd say. Even his character shows how out of place he is. The fact that he's like 40% if what's going on at any time drives me nuts, but at least he tries hard.

Honestly, the show is great. Instead of Pseudo Intellectual nonsense ( btw I hate the term pseudo intellectual)
like reviewrs like to claim,it's far more dumb news show shit, akin to what you'd see on the Today Show or even  a talk show almost, only less showbiz news and more world news and politics. It's done in a smart mechnic, without people having to throw around 6 syllable terms that would alienate most viewers and piss of even more . I love it.

That's exactly what I mean at the end their mesh. It feels like parts of what I described are everywhere. Elements all over the place in the atelier iris games, geomancy in final fantasy, elemental attack manipulation somewhere else....i think it all just sounds so second nature because it occurs in every game in one form or another. Still, the concepts all sound great together...so I hope to see something like that one day.

Evil Dead 2013. Not as fun as the original. Quite the opposite actually but the sheer level of brutality was great. I liked it a lot:)

Just watched this the other night and dare I say I liked it better than the original.  I didn't think it was scary but I did cringe from the brutality of some of the scenes.  Army of Darkness is the best movie of the lot still.
Groovy.

I was at NY Comic Con a couple years ago, and I almost toppled into Bruce Campbell. I was at a point where he was one of my favorite actors, but upon seeing him I kinda choked and pulled the nerd move of the day, shouting OH MY GOD IT'S BRUCE CAMPBELL. He replied (and killed what little childhood I had left) 30 bucks'll get you an autograph kid. Once the startruckedness faded...yeah I felt a little dead inside. I do still enjoy his stuff, but yeah...

Speaking of Army of Darkness, watched that a couple days ago. Really is just hilarious and awesome.

I think something I'd like to see in upcoming rpgs is a more active battle system. Kinda like a cross between Legaia stuff and Saga Frontier 2, but more like an action game. Imagine a battle starts and you're given an option to fight either 1 on 1 with an enemy for a more detailed battle, or group vs group for a simplified and faster fight (Saga Frontier 2), and in the 1v1 fight it was almost like a fighting game where you could associate different basic attacks to controller buttons and combine them to form special attacks or combo strings. It's boring to simply hold down a button all day for basic fights, but sometimes you just want that easy answer, so you can choose the group fight and essentially press (button) to win.

I also had this really fucking radical idea for a battle system in more action rpg style where you did special attacks based on your terrain. Think geomancer in FFtactics but to a whole new degree. Like if there was water in the immediate area you could use it to heal players or attack an enemy, or if there was a patch of grass you could use that to grow vines amd plants to ensnare your foe or gas them with different plantlife for sleep or poison or paralysis. Of course, in the instance where an element isn't available you'd have an option as well. You could carry instant element mods like a bottle of water or a torch or a plant, though these would give you smaller effects depending on quality. I know it sounds like it's been done before, but I can't think of any game that ever portrayed it in this way. You have so many games that give you alchemy for making items or changing them, and it's pretty standard rpg fare to have elements and elemental spells and such, but this would be less like a spell and more like literal field manipulation, almost like in Avatar TLA. Actually, when I think back on it, it reminds me a lot of that show, but more in a magical way. This would be more science fiction. Lots of babbling, I know, but hey...maybe one of you aspiring video game developers will see this and throw it out there for use one day....I can dream.

1345  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy XIV: ARR, a Thread Reborn on: July 21, 2013, 05:19:56 AM
well i was thinking maybe it would be two weeks. the first week for previous testers then they let everyone else in. a week off then early access.
But why would you give previous testers more time than new testers? It's not a reward, testing the game (well for some it is), it's a test. More people at this point would be better overall as that's extra people to find lame bugs and glitches that the current testers (i.e. Everyone who's just playing the game) haven't come across yet. I personally would like to see a larger scale test now, as the game's a month and a week away...I don't wanna see day 2 patches and roll backs at the starting gate...it's generally bad news.

Another thing, that pre-week launch for preorders is nonsense. What's the point of a launch date if you're gonna drop it a week early for people who paid in advance? If you released the game a week early, you'll sell just as many copies as if you waited the week extra. It's just so....underhanded sounding. "Buy me early and you can play me a week before anyone else..." When retailers do that, they get fined a large amount of money for copyright laws.

I think I'm screwed until The Stick of Truth is out. According to Trey Parker, Earthbound was a major influence in their direction of the game.

Wait, I think Master's Mend restores only 30 durability, at least in armoring and blacksmithing...
1349  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy XIV: ARR, a Thread Reborn on: July 19, 2013, 04:17:07 AM
I had blacksmithing to 23 I think and a couple others to 13, and having HQd a large number of pieces of gear....yeah I doubt the items would really be worth the hassle anyway.  None of the created items were better than dungeon drops by a longshot, outside of having materia slots which in itself isn't that huge anyway. To be frank, even the stat increases between HQ and NQ aren't big, at best a single damage or defense point higher and maybe an str or int point as well. FFXI really got stupid about those HOOGE BOOSTS between standard and +1 gear so the idea of HQ vs NQ being simply a few extra gil instead of literally millions is pretty nice.

So I'm gonna try to bench 335lbs on my next chest day at the gym. I have done 315 on repeated visits normally at the end of my bench press run, albeit only once per attempt. I've been adding new exercises to my workouts like push ups, cable flies, dumbell variations of regular exercises, and a few others. I'm actually proud of myself that at 375lbs I can do a solid 40 push ups in one go. I may go for broke next time I do chest and see how many of those I can bust out in one go. Funny thing...as a kid I could barely do 20. Weight lifting is changing my everything.

In other news, that lady I talked about having the hots for is coming back to NY next week. Think she's back til the end of august, but idk if I'm ready mentally to say or do anything. I'm far more confident around people (I don't feel odd answering the door without a shirt on anymore, so long as I have shorts on), but trying to get in the door with her....it seems so far fetched still. My sister has told me she doesn't go for white guys, and that she's into thugs, so I am DEFINITELY out of my element there. I dunno, maybe another week or two and I'll feel more in control of my own shit, especially if I bust out some larger numbers at the gym.

And of course, she'd HAVE to come back for August, the fire month of rpg gaming. 2 games at the start and then FFXIV at the end plus beta. I mean, a relationship should take precedence, but you're looking at a dedicated gamer who has been playing since before this girl was even born (only a year but still). It'd be like telling a football star to cut back and get a girlfriend...unlikely.

Man, nothing's ever easy.
