1156  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: "Their early stuff was better" discussion on: March 21, 2015, 04:11:30 PM
Thing is, it's tough as a studio to make that happen. Start off making crummy games, and you probably won't have the money to make good ones. Did Blizzard make anything but really good in the beginning? Our maybe Bungie or Bioware?

Maybe it's not by leaps and bounds, but we've discussed in several places on this site that Compile Hearts is a good example of a company who is slowly improving the quality of their games.

The structure of this game is very similar to how I thought the structure of FF8 would be when I first started playing it. I like that the military academy actually IS a hub this time around and grants the characters a bit of social interaction, even if it is very minor.

Also, SO's can go to hell. Like, it's such a neat idea to add an extra layer of challenge to missions and encounters, but the way they're executed is pathetic. Opening the SO doesn't pause the action so good luck reading the details of each SO, sometimes they don't arrive until the battle you're in is almost over anyway so you lose your chance to complete half of them, and finally if you do miss reading the objectives I don't think there's a way to confirm them.

Again, fantastic idea, but couldn't have been executed more poorly.

Pretty amazing Flash Sale on PSN this weekend with a bunch of games for less than a dollar, including things like Breath of Fire, Wild Arms, Katamari, and Tokyo Jungle.

Chicago on St. Paddy's day is nothing compared to Boston, I'm sure. Boston folks are horrible 365 days of the year, and everyone here has to celebrate their "Irish pride" whether they're Irish or not.

So I was really intimidated by Type--0 (if that wasn't apparent) when you get back to the academy and they introduce the time mechanic. But I finally got up the nerve to play some more and learned about being able to grind random battles before a mission with no consequence and feel much better. I also feel better now that I've had a chance to experiment and learn some of the less obvious mechanics of the game, like powering up magic and altering normal attacks.

Still very disappointed in Awakened Fate Ultimatum, but I'm still playing through it and enjoying it for the most part. I especially like the Ultimate Choice mechanic, as the writers seem to have gone with the tone of "No matter what you choose, everything's going to go to shit." I'm hoping it's a short game so I can play through a few times experimenting with different choices.

Also playing the Toukiden: Kiwami demo. I knew this was known as a Monster Hunter clone but I had no idea that it was so BLATANT about it. I feel like I'm just playing a reskinned and watered down version of MH when I'm playing this. Still fun, but I think I'll be a bit shameless and make my second PS4 game Omega Quintet instead.

Forgive the double post, but I wanted to share that even though it's relevant to the plot, the names for Class Zero still really bug me. Mostly Seven, Eight and Nine--because it's lazy (they couldn't have made Nine female and named her Nona?)--as well as Jack, Queen and King because they're associated with the wrong numbers.

Kojima is basically Konami's life support. He needs to leave the company so that they can pass away in peace.

It's coming!

How do you guys feel about that? I mean technically, they are having people do translation for free... but on the other hand, I want this game so bad, I'd willingly help them for free =/

What is Tree of Savior?
It's seen as a spiritual successor to Ragnarok Online

Oof, was RO2 that bad that they're almost literally replicating the first game now???
Not that I'm complaining, I clocked [too much] time with RO1 and loved playing it, going back into something like it might be fun (and damn it looks real pretty too).

Aksys be teasing something

I tried to get back into RO1 recently... I have no idea how I figured out what to do in that game after the tutorial way back when. Hopefully this one is at least a little more intuitive.

DIFFICULTY/ Does anyone know if there is a content penalty for playing on Cadet?? I have been playing on Officer just in case, because I heard rumor that certain things can only be done/seen on officer and up but I haven't been able to confirm this. I ask because some of these side missions are seemingly impossible without turning down the difficulty, grinding my ass off or simply tackling them on New Game +
I checked on the Gamefaqs message board and according to what I saw, no difficulty does not impact content or trophies.

According to the guide, the only thing affected by difficulty other than difficulty is Gil rewards.

Finished it this morning. Makes me wonder how leveling is going to be in the actual game. I ended up at level 30 with all the random encounters you're thrust into trying to get from place to place.
1166  Media / Game Journals / Re: A Game Journal Reborn on: March 17, 2015, 09:01:52 PM
Can't believe how disappointing today has been. Three games I was really looking forward to and not one of them has lived up to expectations. Final Fantasy XV's demo fails to strike the right chords with me. Final Fantasy Type-0 seems like it's going to be a thoroughly fun game, but it has a few shortcomings that extends the learning curve to more than it needs to be. It also seems like it's going to be quite challenging, which isn't a fault forthright, but I play games to alleviate stress, not add to it.

Then there's The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. I have NEVER seen a game sequel so thoroughly destroy the soul of what made the first game so special. They just stripped all the wackiness and strategy from the first game and replaced them with some ideas that right now seem really poorly thought out.

- No more starting at level 1 in dungeons, from now on you only have an overall level, which just manages to turn a strategy-rich roguelike into a mindless grind-fest.

- No more divinigram, with it's open customization and countless possibilities. In it's place is the most bare-bones version of a sphere-grid wannabe I've ever seen. (We really need to come up with an umbrella term for physical representations of character development)

- No more wacky items with crazy abilities. Now you just have a light/dark system that pretty much plays out like if Ikaruga were turn-based--transform to Angel form to defeat devils and Devil Form to defeat angels--absolutely mindless. Abilities are gained in the aforementioned sphere grid (which is so simplistic they didn't bother naming it, it's just referred to as "Customization").

- Then they go and throw in this morality choice system that changes the events of the game. So they made the story more replayable than the first game, but took out everything from the first game that made you want to keep playing.

Ugh... I want to like this so bad but in it's current state I might just have to ignore it unless some major improvements happen. As the site's previews mentioned, the battle system is unwieldy to an incredibly annoying degree. The game has essentially brought back random encounters the way enemies suddenly show up, and night battles are a joke. Like, I get that they're supposed to be tougher than fighting during the day, but when you can literally fight for an hour because enemies won't stop spawning it's officially unreasonable.

The environment design is really nice. Finding your way back to the road really has that "modern wilderness" feel to it. I don't hate the characters, even Prompto isn't nearly as annoying as I thought he would be. So the game definitely has potential.

That being said, if the Behemoth fight is an accurate depiction of the game's difficulty, the whole thing can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

Wish Square Enix would step away from the whole "Your HP is designed to make it through a single encounter, so one wrong move will spell disaster" theory of RPG design. I'm not loving Type-0 for the exact same reason.

After finishing Volume 4 of .Hack//Another Birth I decided I couldn't leave IMOQ unfinished, so I went back to it and managed to get back into the swing of things and am about two story dungeons in. Another Birth reminded me that Quarantine is definitely the shortest of the four games and also the most eventful. So in order to properly continue my .Hack marathon, I have to finish the games before moving on to Root.
1169  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Completion List 2015 on: March 16, 2015, 03:06:55 PM
1. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMix
2. Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMix
3. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
4. Tappingo 2
5. The Guided Fate Paradox
6. Shantae: Risky's Revenge
7. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

This year is off to a really good start for my backlog. I've beaten more games than I've purchased and I'm on track to continue that trend into the summer doldrums. Actually, to help me with my backlog and to try and moderate my purchases, I've set up a manual counter for game consumption that starts at zero and adds one for every game I purchase and subtracts one for every game I complete. I use that counter to determine whether or not to buy a game, naturally trying to keep the counter in the negatives.

I've also decided that once the counter gets to -10, I'll reset it so as to try and take out my backlog in chunks and avoid risking feeling too complacent in my quest.
1170  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What's the haps? on: March 14, 2015, 08:48:50 AM
That's harsh.
Is it a chain? As in, any hope of some few being relocated to another store?

Well, it's Gamestop so while that option is available, most of us aren't going to go that route for various reasons. The most important is that Gamestop does barely any hiring outside of October, so anywhere we go we'd be an extra cog and have to earn our hours all over again. For me it's more difficult. I don't drive, and this store is the only one in walking distance. There's public transportation, but outside of the city proper it's pretty unreliable and even then it's not worth it for a part-time job.

The whole situation is just asshole bussinessman being asshole businessmen. Our landord is being an asshole and not renewing our lease because the store next to us, Olympia Sports, is being an asshole and paying more for our storefront so they can expand their store. Then corporate is being an asshole by not wanting to spend the money to furnish a new location.

It's okay, though, because they just pissed a lot of people off. Our main clientele is from Marblehead, a small town of extremely rich folks from old money. The two closest Gamestops to ours are either next to a Walmart or in Lynn, a town most people consider to be a bit of a ghetto.
