1  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Podcast (Random Encounter) Thread on: Today at 04:21:26 AM
With regard to the discussion of Supergiant games on the most recent episode: I found Transistor to be much, much more compelling than Bastion, although I enjoyed both games.  I didn't find the talkative sword to be at all annoying or hipstery, and really I just got very drawn into the world.  It didn't seem like anybody on the podcast really shared my enthusiasm for the game, but I binged it over two days, and when I beat it it left me feeling that melancholy you feel when you finish a really good book.

Also, you guys should totally do something at Magfest, because I'm seriously considering going to the next one that happens, so you'd have at least one panel attendee!

Lastly, goodbye Stephen! Good luck in future things!

Thank you!! I'm both sad and very excited. Thanks for listening to me ramble on the show ^^

The hype around Breaking Bad pertains to the fact that it's really well made and about how good people doing bad things for good reasons can evolve and warp perceptions of right and wrong, and to make the viewer consider whether or not they're in the characters' corners. Dismissing it all ad "hype" sucks. It is definitely not "bad people doing bad things all the time."

Also the creators pay incredible attention to how film can be used to tell story in ways outside dialogue. Rob should watch it.

The music is very good. I do think it can be a bit repetitive, especially combined with the repetitive environments. It's a concept game for sure, but it's fun and worth a play. As a whole it's a great soundtrack, but the game as a whole just begs for a little more variety.

X-Com has an option to remove the gore, actually! (at least I'm pretty sure)

Played a lot more.

The combat is fun but very easy. You build up the Setsuna gauge to store charges, and you can expend them by pressing square when you execute an attack or skill. The effect varies based on your accessories and the skills you use (more damage, wider range, etc). Weapons and accessories have Command, Support, or All slots for the materia like system (which I've been calling Law Stones but probably wouldn't if I were in charge of localization). As you use them the stones, the skill can gain new effects based on the piece of gear it is inserted in (so for example. my spin slash has crit damage up x 5), so there's a nice bit of customization there.

Also the double/triple techs are awesome.

Dialogue is charming, game is very pretty. I am getting a little weary of the constant snowy environments though-- I do hope the game finds a way to change it up, though it seems unlikely. Basically, it's a fun, pleasant RPG with a little too much sameyness in its areas and combat that is way too easy. Definitely still enjoying it though, as the characters are really rather charming. I'll update again later after I make it further.

I got both versions.

The load times are a bit high on Vita, but honestly, it's not that big a deal.

That said, I've been playing on PS4.

Basically, it's Chrono Trigger's battle system with Mario RPG style timing on special attacks, plus fun cross techs, and gem system that's all the rage these days.

Very fast paced, great music (almost entirely piano).

I might stream for the site if anyone's interested.

The story writeup does not suggest fighting back. Think FFX. She's going on a pilgrimage with a retinue to be sacrificed. I am sure it will not end with that.

I'm picking mine up tomorrow!

I'm not sure if it exists elsewhere, but if anyone's interested, I just did a super rough translation of the story synopsis on the official site. Standard stuff, but certainly nostalgic.

Quote
Upon that island, there was from time immemorial a tradition handed down.

Once every ten years, a sacrifice was offered up to supplicate the [demon damage/demon calamity (seems like a proper name for some kind of calamity or evil force)]

Thanks to this sacrifice, the island has just barely eked out a peaceful existence.

However, without waiting for the year of the next ceremony,
the [demon calamity] has begun to surge.

Seeing the severity of the situation, the people of the island believed that through the offering of a second sacrifice the demons could be satiated.

The name of that sacrifice is "Setsuna."
A girl of seventeen, possessed of exceptional magical powers

The ceremony of the sacrifice, a journey to the ends of the land:

"Setsuna" sets out on a journey alongside a party of guardians.

Good point, Stephen.  I'd be thrilled if they announced another tactical game in the near future.  No real complaints from me if this is a side project, but I'll be pretty sad if this is a new direction for the series.

Yeah that would be really sad for you. BRB gonna go play Phantasy Star.

Well, to be fair, they also aren't calling it Valkyria Chronicles, just Valkyria, so this is more likely a spin-off than a replacement for the tactical games.

FFIX came out on mobile and it's an excellent, excellent port. I'm playing it in Japanese now (related, the mobile versions let you swap langauges), and the new HD font, shading on the character models, and speed settings are great.

Fithos Lusec is made up, but the whole phrase is an anagram of "Succession of Witches!"

I agree with everyone who supports my unabashed Shimomura fanboying.

And I apologize that I haven't been around to make as any comments or responses to everyone, but I read everything you write and wanted to thank you all. What we do here at RPGFan is absolutely important to me, and even though for the past few months and the next several I'm neck deep in work, I and the rest of the excellent folks on the show will do our best to keep it coming!

MOTY's afoot, after all ;)

Localizers changing content for different regions has literally nothing to do with 'being offended by content.' The localization team made the decision to remove this petting minigame because they were offended? Nope. Someone in the company hierarchy said "this has to go for 'x' reason we are making for purely business decisions" and the content was removed.

Also, localization does not mean "give explanations for Japaneseisms and translate literally." That kind of approach does not create natural dialogue or good writing.

As always, the "people are too easily offended" people are way too ready to blame literally everything on "people being too easily offended."

Region locking, however, is definitely lame.
