1  Media / RPGFan Music Discussion / Re: RPGFan Music Podcast (Rhythm Encounter) Thread on: February 04, 2016, 09:12:10 AM
I agree with everyone who supports my unabashed Shimomura fanboying.

And I apologize that I haven't been around to make as any comments or responses to everyone, but I read everything you write and wanted to thank you all. What we do here at RPGFan is absolutely important to me, and even though for the past few months and the next several I'm neck deep in work, I and the rest of the excellent folks on the show will do our best to keep it coming!

MOTY's afoot, after all ;)

Localizers changing content for different regions has literally nothing to do with 'being offended by content.' The localization team made the decision to remove this petting minigame because they were offended? Nope. Someone in the company hierarchy said "this has to go for 'x' reason we are making for purely business decisions" and the content was removed.

Also, localization does not mean "give explanations for Japaneseisms and translate literally." That kind of approach does not create natural dialogue or good writing.

As always, the "people are too easily offended" people are way too ready to blame literally everything on "people being too easily offended."

Region locking, however, is definitely lame.

Everyone's being respectful, but this is a pre-emptive "don't be an asshole" in regards to this topic.

Also, I agree with the above. Citing a dictionary for a complex field like you've defeated someone is nonsensical. Selection of materials is itself creating a narrative, and that includes people who write dictionaries and histories and anything else.
4  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth on: February 03, 2016, 07:30:34 AM
I've played most of the Japanese version. It's a very fun, polished game. The combat can sometimes be a bit wooden, but overall it's a very solid, fun game-- particularly if you dig Digimon.

haha nah, Undertale is great and deserves all of the praise it has received. Plenty of small indie games get middling reviews.

To be fair, I do think the hype around Undertale is more than willing to hand-wave its flaws, but as always it's totally okay to love something despite its flaws-- and I absolutely do love Undertale ^^.

I'm heading out and don't have a whole lot of time to comment, but I will say that while I appreciate your lengthy comments, I fundamentally disagree with your notion of "it's well-loved and popular so I hate it."

That doesn't seem like a position with a particularly defensible base. It seems like it'd be better to just say "I have no interest" than "my interest is based inversely on the interest of others."

In fact, I've since played and beaten Undertale and now love it. Had I just said "people love it, I refuse to play it," I would have truly missed out. I'm glad I didn't.
7  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Sell FF7 & FF9 for PSX? how is the FF7 PC Port? on: January 09, 2016, 11:35:19 AM
They fixed the PC port's audio a while back. It also has a few small translation corrections.

I still think the remake looks awesome and promising. Can't wait to play it.

Lard, you continue to not engage with the point, which is that turn based games are not mass-appeal enough for what this remake will cost.

Also, be respectful.

If this were a turn based game, you'd have a very high evasion stat.
11  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake on: January 01, 2016, 06:26:55 PM
I love turn based combat. I just don't think it's the only valid way to make an rpg. Also, we are up to our armpits in turn based games trying to capitalize on the nostalgia of the golden era. I'm glad Square is doing something new.

Also Lard, you're just wrong. Turn based games like Persona do well in our microcosm, they do not blow up sales charts. That's fine, if you're spending what Atlus spends on a Persona and merchandising they way they do. Not so for an expensive, over the top, globe-spanning production on cutting edge hardware like this remake. You are completely and utterly wrong if you Square only has to sell this to "us."
12  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake on: January 01, 2016, 04:26:43 PM
My point is more that I don't need another turn-based, prettied-up FFVII. I'd rather play something entirely new. I'm not nearly as married to turn-based combat as it seems like a lot of folks are. I'm just happy to see a new take on a story and characters I like a lot.

I understand some people DO want that, and I respect that. It's just not something I care about. I'm interested in being surprised by what's different, not fed the same game with prettier graphics.
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake on: January 01, 2016, 03:55:26 PM
I hope the game is changed a ton. I'll buy every entry and probably enjoy it. Even if I don't, beats getting the same game with prettier graphics. If I wanted to play the same game, I'd play FFVII.

He directed Crisis Core and Type-0?
