I was more referring to the step in accessibility and the very heavy streamlining we saw from TES3 to TES5, which made it more popular with a mainstream audience. I'm always happy to hear a game getting a bigger audience, I just don't want them to sacrifice the SOUL of the series.

As long as they keep all the complexity and consistency of the systems and world design, making them more accessible is absolutely something I can get behind. Some of the mystery is part of the charm, though, so I hope it doesn't just become Skyrim with Dark Souls combat.

I wouldn't worry too much. They only changed the name from Demon's to Dark because of rights issues.

I thought DS1's pot was completely awesome. Too bad they aren't making. That Into an anime.

While it's a bit disappointing, I'm not sure what I was even expecting all things considered. But it isn't too comforting to imagine that this is their best foot forward.

What were you expecting? Fully voiced cutscenes like SWTOR? Those are still MMO fetch/kill quests. I've read so many people on the official forums be disappointed in the questing, but nobody seems to have a better solution. Don't forget this is just one aspect of progression gameplay. If you have any alternatives, share them.

My alternative is for someone to ditch this stale genre and stop rehashing it "because it kinda works." The excuse of "well, do you have a better idea" doesn't fly with me-- we aren't developing the game, we're paying for it. The onus is on THEM to make something good and creative. Making the game FUNCTIONAL is all well and good (and a nice gesture for people who already bought in), but as we've seen with basically every MMO released in the last year or two, copying WoW and having that god fucking awful "go kill 5 monsters" design for the early levels and then the "go do raids where you kill bigger monsters with more people for more loot" is so played out.

And as Rob said on the podcast, what would be fucking fantastic is for developers (especially J-devs) to realize that combat being the ONLY form of interaction with a world is incredibly tedious and seriously wearing thin on my nerves. And let's be real-- I read the dialogue for those quests. It's completely generic filler "well X thing happened which necessitates you finding/killing/using an item on and them killing Y," so that isn't going to carry the experience. I don't doubt they could come up with something compelling for later content, but why is it that every MMO has to be stuck in this paradigm of "okay do this boring shit for 50 hours... okay now you can do something mildly interesting."
Just the thoughts of someone VERY sick of the MMO genre.

For those of you waiting for a combat video, here you go.

As expected, we're looking at standard MMO fare here: kill X monsters at location Y and return for reward Z.

Womp. Womp.

I also think people's appreciation for things evolves over time. The things I love about certain games now are things I didn't necessarily appreciate when I was younger. It's why I love FF9 more now than I did as a kid. It's the same thing with movies, music, and literature too.

Things change. If you ask me, P2 has been vastly outclassed by its sequels and by the rest of the SMT series in terms of playability and design.

A tight-knit genre? That's stupid. Apparently the zillion subgenres of RPG don't count.

Actually you can easily ignore a game like Skyrim. Especially since the core design philosophy behind DA is completely different from TES. I'll take a more narrow slice of 'content' with more carefully designed gameplay over 'here, have a shitload of mediocre randomness.'

Unless your owner says your game must sell a bazillion copies, so make it like Skyrim,' there's no reason to homogenize.

Also, Skyrim wasn't a new direction. Unless you count selling way more than its predecessors despite being the same basic game' as a new direction. Which is exactly what he's saying, in PR speak.

I used to prefer straight OSTs, but in recent years there have been so many great arrangement albums that I'm loving them more and more.

And yes, everyone should check out Dust's OST. Remember, it is listenable in full on HyperDuck's Bandcamp page. The game is great, too. A little bit repetitive, but considering the length and quality of the adventure, its easily my favorite XBLA game this year. I hope it can get a Steam release.

When I playedi t way back in TGS 2010, I felt the same way. Gorgeous game, really bland RPG. Level 5 can (and has) done much more interesting games, and I feel like (although apparently not with you guys) this game is getting a free pass because AMFGG GHIBLI GAME. I can appreciate the time and care that went into it, but there are plenty of pretty games out there that play far more interestingly.

I haven't given a damn about school since I started working full time. I couldn't be bothered to finish a 2 fucking page paper because I'm such an idiot. Time to, as a 30 year old, politely beg for a day extension. I'm going to use the excuse that "i just moved and i don't have internet derp derp" as part of it.

Most professors are happy to grant an extension as long as you ask for one. If they're not an idiot, they realize people have lives and stuff to do, especially if they're working full time. I look at it as "I'd rather grade a good paper later than a shitty paper now."

Please tell me someone besides me played Omega. I know it's $15 but I can't be the only one.
Eh, Omega is the least interesting DLC idea so far for ME3. I wouldn't have been tempted to get it even if I hadn't uninstalled ME3 around the time of the extended cut release. Only thing I'm curious about regarding it is whether you can kill Aria. That is a presumably Renagade option that my otherwise pure Paragon would take if given.

I doubt it. Bioware is in love with the character and seems to think their audience is, too. (And I'm sure some do.)
