The first game was pretty rad, especially since they delivered beyond the amusing concept.

I think I may actually check this out, now that it's free.

from what i remember i think the choice of chaz is dubious. wasnt lutz leading the party after alys death? other than that i wish you would redo the the female one with that layout. and no ryudo on that list makes me a sad panda.

Rune and Chaz argued back and forth for a while, but in the end Rune/Lutz was basically training Chaz to run the group, and Chaz made most of the decisions.

And I'm a big fan of the new layout too :)

The above is false.

I think 999 had a few foibles-- notably having to repeat puzzles-- that were completely overshadowed by how fantastic the plot tied itself together and how much it made me actually care about the entire cast. Fucking awesome game; and the final puzzle, despite being a type of puzzle that basically could have stopped be dead, was dramatic and awesome.

So yeah, I fucking loved 999. I could get VLR for 3DS, but I really want to wait and try to get it on Vita because I'm a whore for music fidelity and I love VLR's soundtrack. Maybe this Christmas :)

EDIT:

having the reputation of "adventure game buff" makes me feel warm and joyous.

I'd be willing to try out ARR once it comes out, if it isn't just "here is an MMO from 2008 with 2014's graphics." And I agree, I think it does speak to the character of the developers that they've actually been trying to support their players.
1221  Media / The Soundroom / Re: Piano Collections Final Fantasy XII, 07.11.12 on: November 10, 2012, 10:49:25 PM
Yeah, Casey Ormond did a dynamite job with this. 水のほとり/Near the Water is such a fantastic song. It's making me retroactively feel a lot warmer towards FFXII's OST.

I think Arndt is skilled at creating quality characters and good dialogue. Those are both things that Star Wars sorely needs-- I'm really quite excited to see where this goes. I haven't been this optimistic about Star Wars since I was a little kid waiting for Phantom Menace.
1223  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: FFXIV 2.0 - Holy Shit!? on: November 10, 2012, 07:53:18 PM
Nah, I can agree with that too-- I was going to make that point, but I forgot. Their last few titles have been pretty rough, but I can't totally discount this FFXIV thing. I mean, they're a business, they must have analysts saying "guys you're not going to make any money on FFXIV anymore." No matter how much eye candy you want to make, spending money and resources on something that is basically guaranteed to not perform financially MUST have some kind of motivation, don't you think?
1224  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: FFXIV 2.0 - Holy Shit!? on: November 10, 2012, 07:39:46 PM
You know, I can't lie. Square Enix must know A Realm Reborn isn't going to do that great sales-wise. They must. Which is why I actually admire them for following through with it for all of the people already invested in and that have already bought FFXIV. It's a classy move and one that actually makes you think they give a damn about their players and their reputation. Even if ARR isn't that great, they've clearly put a lot of effort into it, and I think that says a lot.
1225  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 3 (expect spoilers for the entire series) on: November 10, 2012, 02:50:57 AM
I don't necessary care for a "happier" ending, but the fact that this isn't the whole "lol Catalyst and other dumb shit" ending is what interests me. For all I care, the game could end right
Code:
when Anderson and Shepard are dying
and it would still be better. Their ending is bad, inconsistent writing, and the EC only makes it worse-- because they take their bad writing and add insultingly huge amounts of 'detail' to it. I return to my favorite example,
Code:
your nice, tender, minute-plus scene with your LI while Harbinger is in the background blasting people to death. People who aren't you or the Normandy, which, you'd think, would register higher on the HOLY FUCKING SHIT KILL IT scale

But yeah, I don't think the ending needed to be happier. That wasn't the issue, at least not for me. The sacrifice and all that was kind of poignant.

EDIT: Also, no, it's not idiotic. It's just what some people wanted to see. There WERE casualties. That wasn't my particular problem with the ending, but it's not even close to idiotic to have expected something more in line with the rest of the series' tone. Knowing that this mod exists and that I won't have to truck through Bioware's pile of dog shit at the top of an otherwise glorious mountain of awesome has reinvigorated my desire to play the game.
1226  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 3 (expect ME1&2 spoilers) on: November 09, 2012, 08:23:28 PM
Wow. You've given me hope. A new lease on Mass Effect. Now I can replay the series and sidestep Bioware's shit storytelling choices.
1227  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dark Souls on: November 09, 2012, 02:32:40 AM
I THINK you can get another. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can.

Tales of Xillia 2 final battle track (no spoilers, other than music).

"Music spoilers"
Code:
Holy fuckstick, I love this song. One of my favorite things this series has been doing is using the vocal theme as the basis for a battle track, and using it for the FINAL BOSS this time is amazing. I want to import this game naoooooo.
1229  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: If Namco wants my money... on: November 06, 2012, 11:36:19 PM
Buy Xillia!

And Innocence was excellent-- the DS version, that is. I enjyoed the plot, or at least, what I could understand with my average Japanese. Spada!
1230  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Disney Buys Lucasfilm on: November 04, 2012, 11:00:56 PM
I'm optimistic about the series. If Disney gets the right director and script then Star Wars may be great again. Lucas seemed to lose his zeal in the prequals, or had too much control.

He lost his zeal and replaced it with stubborn adherence to awful ideas. I think the original movies were more a product of someone keeping him in check and vetoing flagrantly awful ideas.

But I agree. I'm very optimistic now.
