Even The Old Republic, an MMO which got a much better reception had troubles maintaining a subscription based model
The problem isn't the subscription based model.  It never has been a problem.  World of Warcraft still sees tremendous success, as does the much smaller but still very successful Eve Online.  They both do what they do exceptionally well.  The Old Republic couldn't retain subscribers because Bioware failed to produce meaningful content updates post-launch.  If you do not provide the means for your playerbase to remain entertained, they will leave, especially if the competition actively updates their games.

The success or failure of FFXIV and the subscription model it is using will depend largely on the content they provide at launch and their ability to continue delivering more content.  People want value for their $10-$15/month subscription.  If you provide it, people will pay it.  If they aren't forthcoming with their update schedule and what they plan to bring to their playerbase, they will move on.

I disagree, the problem with ToR is that it was going for the exact same market slice as WoW, which was dumb. They could have released meaningful content updates til they were blue in the face, that game was still gonna tank.

Episode 53 is live.  Enjoy!

I thought I'd have a hard time figuring out which user was you.

And then I saw the username and the Diablo avatar...

A winner is Rob!

Pretty sure. I think they released a cheap model in Japan that doesn't, but I'm not sure if it ever made it here.

Golden Sun is the serie with the most backtracking I've ever seen.
It's like there's this designer somewhere getting sexual satisfaction out of making you walk back to every town you've been to after every single dungeon.

And if it isn't the endless backtracking, it's the endless walls of text which also have a severe tendency to endlessly backtrack upon itself.

I'm sorry, I thought we were talking about Golden Sun, not modern Zelda :D

Thanks to an LP that started back when forum lurkers were still on :frogout: I was reminded of something I regret.

Playing Beyond the Beyond.

Aw come on, I liked that game. It's pretty much Golden Sun haha.

Also, InFamous was fun as hell. So was the second one.

Yeah, I think it just has to do with using old or out of date encryption or something. My 3DS works here, so I'm hoping the Vita does too, because I anticipate being online with that more often.

If it helps, I turned off the security on my router for the amount of time it took me to download this. Turned it back on right after, no problemo.

Don't forget the 'hey go collect a hundred million zillion rupees that your wallet can't hold so I can translate Triforce charts for you" sequence in Wind Waker. I hated that part.

Generally speaking, though, I don't like 3D Zelda and find the entire games to be 'annoying sequences.' I made it to the Triforce chart section in Wind Waker, and beat Skyward Sword. SS was FULL of 'annoying sequences.' I hate OoT and have never been able to get through that game, it just felt like such a damn slog to me. The 2D ones (especially the Capcom ones and LttP) seemed to abandon that "BIG ADVENTURE SO WE MUST SEND YOU ON ALL MANNER OF ANNOYING TASKS BEFORE YOU CAN GET TO THE DUNGEON' pretense, but it's been a long time so I may not remember as well.

Do you know why it won't work on the WiFi at your place? I had to change the settings on my router temporarily to get it to connect.

I don't think I'd personally go that far. I haven't seen anything that isn't a sleepily executed JRPG trope so far. Fortunately, it's not really the point of the game anyway. The combat is enjoyable and there are a lot of options, so that's keeping my interest.

Been playing this (Elminage Original) for a while. Game is enjoyable so far. Very old school, and not at all accessible to new players in any way. Translation is a awful slapdash job. I think I'd actually have an easier time reading the Japanese, haha. It's very much like playing a classic turn based RPG from the early 90's. The music is pretty enjoyable, too.

Now I've got 8 hours on the game. I like it, but it's grindy. If you like Wizardry, you'll like this. People on GameFAQs are saying "the NPC conversation translations are really good! It's just system messages that are borked!" which is flat-out wrong. I know unlocalized Japanese when I see it, and this game has it all over the place. It's like playing Phantasy Star I all over again. The conversations were translated completely literally without any attempt to make them sound natural or "not-Japanese." Still, it's functional enough. Usually.

Basically if you like dungeon crawlers with multiclassing and lots of classes, this one won't disappoint. Shame the translation is utter garbage.

I just finished Heir to the Empire, the first of the Thrawn trilogy (Star Wars). What a fantastic book. Some of the prose was a little bit cliched, but man was that a fun book to read. Just picked up the other two!

I actually liked the Capcom Zeldas.  Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, and Minish Cap were pretty fun.

Those are actually my three favorite Zeldas, along with LttP :)
1229  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Sony's Smash Bros. on: November 22, 2012, 03:23:40 AM
I will be picking it up so I can have it on Vita and PS3. I enjoyed the beta and couldn't give a shit less that it's a Smash Bros clone.

Well this is certainly something. I'm a sucker for Time's Scar covers, too. :D
