1441  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: The Elder Scrolls Online - planned for 2013 release on: May 05, 2012, 10:48:53 AM
I don't understand that mentality, in all honesty.  If anything, Bioware proved that you can provide the story-centric experience and accessibility of a single player game into an online game with Star Wars: The Old Republic.  The game has its flaws, but that was par for the course with Bioware products.  I don't see why this game would be any different.  If anything, The Elder Scrolls games have been far less story-focused and more open-world, so this should be something of a dream come true.

I'm tired of so many series feeling that they need to cater to either an MMO or co-op multiplayer audience. Sometimes I just want to enjoy a game solo, you know? It's not so much the story that bothers me, I just ike having my OWN world to explore. I'm not saying anything is wrong with them doing an MMO, it's just not for me personally.

I agree. ToR only proved that you can stuff cutscenes into the MMO paradigm. Beyond that, it doesn't really feel anything like the single player Bioware games, if you ask me. Playing solo in an MMO still makes it an MMO. And part of the Elder Scrolls is that feeling of adventure and exploration, and the very nature of MMOs basically negates this, because there's always "content" you have to work towards.

And based on everything they've shown so far, this isn't anything like the Elder Scrolls games-- it's the hot bar-heavy clunkfest that is the MMO genre. I don't understand why he has to explain to you why he doesn't want it to be an MMO? MMOs feel disconnected and clunky when compared to single player-only games, and in no way function anything like a specifically single player experience.

FFXII is a terrible example because, yes-- it has god-awful MMO-style combat and wide open areas-- but also is engineered specifically to be played by a single person at their own pace, and has secrets and areas that don't have to respawn every 15 minutes so the other players can access their "content." What's more, MMOs typically have a disconnect between your inputs and your actions that single player games do not have. Guild Wars 2 is a step away from that, but even that game still has the disconnect.

ToR plays nothing like KOTOR, Mass Effect, or Dragon Age: Origins/2. It looks and feels like an MMO, and has that empty, soulless "full of 'cotent'" feeling that is endemic to the genre. I don't love Skyrim, but it feels nothing like an MMO, and Flamingrift is pointing out that it's likely we'll lose that 'Elder Scrolls' atmosphere in a game that is engineered to funnel players through its "content" to max level. It will in no way be the freeform experience that the other TES games are.

I'm really enjoying the game, but it's just so ridiculously easy right now. It doesn't feel like any of my tactical choices matter because I either crush enemies or get slaughtered. I think part of the issue is being able to get raised by teammates-- it's awesome, but it also really makes death feel a little less awful.

Also, elementalist is amazing.

Ah cmon, I meant it more sarcastically than anything. Besides, I'm pretty sure someone actually used the same wording he did regarding the ending. It's just....so exact. You can't honestly tell me you didn't think the same thing when you read his opinion.

...Actually, didn't you say something like this regarding the ending too, John?

John's not talking about the guy's reaction to the ending, he's saying don't hassle the guy because he's late to the party. That's not cool. Not everyone can get on this stuff right away. And I actually DIDN'T think the same thing. I thought "Oh good, another person who agrees with me. Awesome!"

I'm a big survival horror fan and I believe this game fulfills my needs for that tension more than any survival horror release this gen.

I agree. It has a Metroid-y sense of progression and a real 'I'm horrified and hope I'm prepared for what comes next" vibe that is usually present in great survival horror.

I picked it up and have played it for about an hour. Dig the hell out of it. Reminds of of all those old mysterious RPGs I'd play on my dad's PC as a wee lad. Looking forward to sinking some more time into it.

I was already sold. Now I'm even solder.

I definitely agree with your assessment of the general strengths of each game, Ash. I think they're all fantastic, and I thought the combat in 3 was far and away the best in the series. I may not have scored the game as high as you did (probably mid-90's, if I had reviewed it), and I don't agree with your interpretation of the ending, but I definitely think your review text was true to how I felt about the game.

And I also agree that the word entitled is being thrown around too much. It's being used to label people who are being completely mature and reasonable in their critique of the ending. There are certainly some people who are showing what tools they can be, but I think there are plenty of measured voices on both sides that are equally entitled to have their opinions.

What legitimately disappoints me is that nowhere on the internet can you bring this game up-- to talk about absolutely any aspect of it-- without some dickbag commenting with 'OMG THIS GAME IS SUCH SHIT FUCK BIOWARE THEY ARE THE REINCARNATION OF NAZIS, HOLY SHIT THE ENDING WAS SO BAD OH MY GOD' and it devolving into an idiotic shitstorm. I've seen it happen on tons of articles (many of which don't even have anything to do with the ending), and it's sad. Sometimes I just want to discuss this game without talking about the ending or "how evil EA has made Bioware." Damn stupid internets.
1449  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Xenoblade on: April 04, 2012, 11:24:47 AM
Yeah, it functions differently in a way where you're constantly involved, you can't let it "Auto-pilot" like you could in FFXII since positioning and selecting moves DOES matter.

Anyways, I don't really think that was necessarily for "wider appeal" so much as just making the game they wanted. It does seem like Nintendo gave them the freedom they were desperately trying to get for each of the prior games, plus this time gameplay was more of a focus than narrative (though arguably it's the best executed of their attempts... maybe BECAUSE of that realigned focus.)

Being both an avid Dark Souls fan and a recent owner of a kickass PC, I support a PC version. Dat 1920x1080p.
1453  Media / The Soundroom / Re: Spotlight Albums Discussion on: March 20, 2012, 10:43:41 PM
That IS a really cool track. I'm really starting to think I should have played this game.

(Also, <3 Drammatica, too)

I've never been able to get into the music from DQ. Do you have any recommendations :D?

And yeah, I loved his tracks on XIII-2. And every single track from FFXI. I'm a big Mizuta fan-- although I still haven't had a chance to personally check out Blood of Bahamut.

With the new spotlight posted on 4 Heroes of Light, I wanted to try a little something new! Let's talk about the spotlighted album!

Anyone else have any experience or thoughts about with/about this album? I'm a huge Naoshi Mizuta fan and found it to be pretty different from his normal stuff, but I haven't gotten to do more than a quick listen through the album.

I love the combination between the chippy sounds and the more "modern" elements. The second track in particular has a completely awesome melody that gets woven in and out through the chippy stuff. Makes me want to play this game.

GAH, this one is awesome too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTgTrJenaHg&feature=related
