Seconded. I am almost positive it's an original game, though. Which is awesome.

I'm serah Hawke, and this is my favorite store in the gallows.

My biggest problem was the lack of a cohesive "system" in Bayonetta.  Dodging some moves would trigger witch time while others wouldn't, which lead to lots of cheap hits and deaths.  Combine that with enemies that have some rather cheap attacks, a fucking awful camera that took three steps back from every advancement in the genre, and some of the absolute worst QTEs in any game EVER and you have a rather frustrating experience.  I died a lot playing Bayonetta, and every death felt cheap and undeserved.  I found DMC3 to be easier, and I know how nuts that sounds!

I agree. Bayonetta just felt like 'OH SHIT THIS IS RANDOM AND INSANITY AND BWAHHHHH,' whereas in DMC3 if you died, it was because you screwed up (usually). Nothing more satisfying than dodging attacks with trickster and then delivering unholy smiting.

I couldn't get into Bayonetta. I think that kind of overt sexualization (even in the campy, funny way) just drives me away. Not my thing. Plus, Devil May Cry has always fulfilled my need for "stylish hard action."

They are heavy pants, indeed.

Yeah, I will agree-- the game doesn't have the same level of polish as other Bioware games. It's rushed, and you can tell. There have been too many leaks and mentions of 'EA made us rush it' for me to think it is Bioware's fault, though.

All that said, I really am enjoying the game a lot for what it is. As long as Mass 3 isn't rushed (and it's had about as long to cook as Mass 2 did, I think?), we'll be all set. I'm interested to see if they try to rush out DA3 after all the fallout from 2.

I think that the biggest reason people are disappointed is that the overall story feels disjointed and a little anticlimactic.  It's not the story of Hawke going on an epic quest to save the world.  It's the story of Kirkwall, not of Hawke.  He's not Shepard - at the end of the day his job isn't to kill the Reapers or the Collectors, and he's not the Warden, where his job is to destroy the Blight.  He's just a dude.  A champion of the people, but not a world-saver.

I find that interesting and I find the individual character interactions to be amazing.  I can see why some people wouldn't, though.

I agree, the story is basically about these characters and their lives. There isn't some world-destroying cataclysm at its heart, which is pretty refreshing. Plus, the cast kicks ass. I love the party chat, and everyone has that ME2-style depth to their characters. I dig it.

To be fair, I think it's fair considering masses of idiots rate down the game for no reason other than hearsay. I mean, if you have honest problems with the game like Parn, or even just don't like it without specific reasons, I can understand and respect that. But having something you worked on and are proud of being dragged through the mud by a legion of whiny monkeys who just want to hate on everything can get old, quick. The commentary on that image proves my point.

I agree. I feel sorry for game developers sometimes. It's not like the game is broken or unplayable. Give your opinion respectfully and don't play it if you don't like it. Game development isn't a joke, it's hard work, show some respect for the work that went into this.
1449  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon Age 2 on: March 15, 2011, 04:11:37 AM
I love the quests too. Nearly all of them actually have some story to them. Good stuff.

I don't think the combat is any more repetitive than any other RPG. Environments, yeah, but the cast is awesome. They keep me playing.

We're gonna be podcasting about DA2 and the end of the week... and I have to say, my thoughts are going to be very positive. I think this game is awesome, plain and simple. Streamlined in places, sure, but I'm having a blast of it, and really enjoying the cast.

And I agree-- consumers have an absurd entitlement complex, and it makes me really grind my teeth when I see a preview of a game where the devs are obviously trying to make something great and the first comment is always, "This looks like trash, meh. I will not be spending my hard-earned money."

The difference here is that those swimsuits aren't sexualizing the children. AT3 is.
1453  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ar tonelico 3 coming to the PS3 January 2010 on: March 12, 2011, 12:48:29 PM
I think what you're looking at here is an example of reviews being subjective-- Dennis reviewed Neptunia, Kim reviewed AT3. At first glance, the numbers might say AT3 is worse than Neptunia. I haven't played either, so I can't say-- which is why the text of the review is so important. Since we have such a big group of reviewers, it's tough for all of us (especially when many of us haven't played the game) to sit down and say definitely "this game deserves a lower score than that game." Especially since we all have different tastes/likes and opinions on what works and doesn't work. Best way to look at it is to look at the individual reviewer's numbers, if at all.

This is why I am against numerical review scores. Our scores are always in line with our reviewing scale, but even so, a numerical scale is always going to be arbitrary to some degree. What, exactly, says that this game is a 94 and this game is a 95? Or a 6 and a 6.5?
1454  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ar tonelico 3 coming to the PS3 January 2010 on: March 12, 2011, 02:31:59 AM
Yeah, his sexism was probably what was most offensive to me. Which actually might explain why he might find the blatant objectification of women in AT3 "funny." So maybe it is his kind of game.

Puzzl, sorry if you're offended, but you can't argue that (as Eusis said) at best, he was being offensive and not even realizing it. People work hard around here because they love RPGs and to have him call into question her qualifications and competency is not something that John (or I) am willing to tolerate.
1455  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ar tonelico 3 coming to the PS3 January 2010 on: March 12, 2011, 01:19:38 AM
sex innuendos (and is not that big of a deal anyway ._.)

Not that big of a deal, eh? Well, you don't happen to be a woman.

Exactly! As a reviewer, you should act as one, and not let personal stuff influence THAT much on reviews.

I mean, if i hear on a game that a crystal i way too big to fit a hole the revytail's have, and they start with the innuendos here, i, as a man, would probably laught a lot, but it might get a gamer woman on the bad side.

I'm a male, and I think that stuff is retarded, makes me respect a game less, and would make me say "this is pathetic." It's not good writing, and it's not good humor, it's just cheap pandering to try to sell the game to a very, very specific crowd.

I have never read a review in my life that was completely objective. They are opinions -- they're supposed to be. They will always be personal to some degree.

To be objective would be simply to state facts. If you want that, read a preview.

Be happy I didn't write the review.

That's not the point, preview is a preview, a taste of the game, not how the game is, go ahead and do the review, is not my fault there are not many good reviewers these days.
Read reviews like Wild Arms 2 from Pat, he loved the game, but he was objective enough to keep that away from his review.

You mean read a review where the reviewer liked the game? If a reviewer loves the game, it makes no sense to 'keep that away from the review.' As for your completely not subtle insinuation that Kim is not among the few "good reviewers these days," her review is thorough and communicates hard fact on the game. It has an excessive and tasteless amount of sexual content, and the core aspects of the game are broken or poorly done. The excessive sexual content is there ONLY to offset the fact that they've made a half-assed game.

As for the guy that posted the AT3 and the Eternal Sonata? screens, that doesn't change what i said does it? Yeah, the 3D graphics may not be great quality as others, but does this mean you will say they are bad?

" I didn't found the graphics of this game appealing at all, compared to other games i've played, the graphics of Ar Tonelico 3 are really low quality, i would recommend to check Screens before getting the game to see if they would appeal to you, but i really thing GUST could had done better"

There, a lot better than just saying "The graphics were "ugly" compared to what we have seen.

Do you understand what you are saying? The entire purpose of reviewing the game's graphics and evaluating them is to compare them to other, similar games and graphics in general on the syste and say how they stack up. The fact is, a nearly four-year old game ported from another system looks better than this game, which is full price and brand new. So YES, they ARE bad graphics. And she shouldn't have to say "compared to other games" or "recommend that someone check screens." That's common sense. What else could she possibly be comparing the graphics to, an Atari 2600 game? The review is supposed to state her opinion based on the facts of the game, and the fact is, the graphics are ugly.
