I will be the first to admit my bias towards Kingdom Hearts and anything relating to the King's Quest series.

Honestly, I'm of the opinion that Bioware left pausing and other "strategic" options in the game just to please people who might be upset about the new direction. I didn't find that any strategy was necessary at all (in the demo, at least). I didn't pause, and basically just spammed through my skills then mashed the attack button until the cooldown wore off. That said, I did find the game pretty enjoyable, and the stats and inventory  (at least, the LOCKED screen) seems to show that there's a full suite of customization options that will be available in the full game. Pretty much, if the full game is like the demo, combat is mindless but mildly entertaining and not at all in the same vein as DAO.

Also, side note: Targeting is an absolute nightmare on consoles. Shuffling through 10+ targets was the only time I had to pause, and it was just so I could convince the game to target what I wanted it to.

I just finished playing the demo on PS3 and PC. You auto-attack by right clicking on enemies. On consoles, this isn't as much of an issue because it gives you the illusion that you're playing an action RPG. On PC, the reduced number of skills basically means you're watching most of the fight. It's a lot like KOTOR, honestly. It's enjoyable, but I if we're gonna bitch at FFXIII for having linear paths through areas, I'd better hear bitching at this game for the same, unless it opens up later. It's virtually identical.

The 'bullshit' in the beginning stuck out, too. They're trying to sell it to dudebros.

Still a pretty good demo though. I'm actually interested in the series now.

I have RH and have played a few hours of it. You'll definitely be getting impressions, because it's fucking awesome.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Rob's laugh is now his text message sound on my phone. YESSS.

Also, FFXIII is awesome.

Maybe you should expand on why it ruins the point of an RPG for you, then.

For me I don't see how first person ruins it, in fact in some ways it helps, like Eusis' #1 point there.

As long as I can do a nonlethal stealth playthrough, I'll be happy. I just beat the first one for the first time last week and HU-DAMN. awesome game.
Lethal for me, kthx. I'm apparently violent anyway.

I don't mind violence, but you never know who you're killing. That was one of my absolute favorite parts of the original DX-- finding strategic ways to approach situations to not kill anyone making use of the limited nonlethal arsenal. This new one just makes it look like it'll be even better.

That said, I don't mind the first person perspective. It helps me drop myself into the character, which is exactly how I think games like this should be played. If I were JCD or Adam Jensen, I would try to take as few lives as possible, and these games allow me to play that role.

I can go with this celebration. Bigger, better Demon's Souls is something good for every boy and girl.

Yeah, there are at least 2 editors on staff that absolutely love Demon's Souls  (one of them being moi), and Project Dark/Dark Souls (which is now one of my most anticipated games) had no mention for months, and slipped under the radar. It sounds like you are insinuating that we intentionally left it off the list because we aren't looking forward to it or something, but that's a silly notion.

That pile of shame will become your pile of joy. DDS2 is absolutely incredible. And we're actually considering doing this. We ALL picked up the original Deus Ex on steam sale a few weeks ago, so maybe something will happen with that!

I've always been a huge fan of MQ's soundtrack... the final boss song is so epic. I had an album once called Preludio: Final Fantasy, and for the life of me I can't find it anywhere now. It had an awesome MQ remix on there.
1453  Media / The Soundroom / Re: Any really good recent RPG soundtracks worth picking up? on: January 16, 2011, 04:51:33 AM
Saw some love for Naruke in here and had to join in. I miss her work, it was outstanding! I'm a Shimomura fanboy myself, and am ALSO in love with the Last Ranker and Radiant Historia OSTs lately.

3rd Birthday wasn't too bad ether, but I think it would have been better if they had cut about a third of the songs and spent more time on the rest. Got a little repetitive after a while, I thought.

Glad it made you happy :D

I love the PSO soundtrack-- when the game first came out and I was mortally opposed to it just because it WASN'T Phantasy Star V, it was the only part of the game I liked (I love the game now). I think they have a lot of great sounds in that soundtrack and I love the high-tech, electronic feel of it. It really feels like I always imagined a modern PS soundtrack would sound. That's to say nothing of the version 2 and PSOeIV soundtracks, which actually included some remixes and notes from the original series... which made me giddy like a schoolgirl. The PSP2 soundtrack did this as well. HAPPY ME.
