346  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Member's Game of the Year - 2013 Edition! on: January 08, 2014, 06:22:56 PM
Yeah, I wasn't too thrilled about an MMO winning game of the year. Perhaps I'm "old-fashioned" but I still think they belong in their own category, and that's it. Yes, I know it's stupid.
Am I right in remembering you guys doing a separate awards thing for music last year? Because I felt there was a sad lack of music awards. The best sound award was it. And that went to an MMO. I want to know what regular/ indie games have the best music, voices, overall sound, etc.
I haven't played 99.9% of the games that won awards so I can't really comment on that. I'm sure FFIV is great for what it is. It just seems like you guys went a little too gaga over it. Maybe someday I'll understand.

Music awards are coming-- and in expanded form over last year. Just give us a little time-- I've been putting together some good stuff for it :)

I also wholeheartedly endorse FFXIV for the GOTY award, having been one of the people who voted for it. It wasn't a 'let's do something different' or 'nothing else was good enough' type of thing. The fact is, a huge chunk of our staff thinks the game is fantastic and has enjoyed it more than any other game last year. There were tons of great games in 2013, but FFXIV was easily my favorite, and several others'. I was also disappointed by SMTIV, but I wasn't disappointed by Ni no Kuni because I always thought it was an incredibly average game with pretty graphcis and Joe Hisaishi music. Soul Sacrifice was awesome as well.

Whether you agree or disagree with the staff or reader awards, all that matters (if you ask me) is that last year was awesome for rad RPGs. I don't buy that "the JRPG is dead" business, either-- plenty of good ones come out, but I'm honestly quite happy that generic "ATTACK/MAGIC/ITEM/RUN" anime trope JRPGs are on the decline, because the vast majority of them are creatively bereft and no longer have the same magic for me that they did when I was 14 and much less experienced with them. There are still plenty of good ones, though, and last year proves it.

I'm also really pleased with the challenge and complexity of all the new content. Good times. Love the roulette, too.

I'm on board with this. Obsidian's reptution for buggy games is basically borne of them being forced to rush projects, which Kickstarter funding should ensure that they do not have to do with this.

Seriously, what the holy flying Fuck is wrong with SQ-Enix? The land / housing prices are insane. This just blasted open the game to RMT with freaking TNT. Legacy servers have  it even worse.....sheer madness.

I agree.

Do people actually get upset if there is an apostrophe added to Ys (pronounced Whys, of course)

I'm going to play this again over the Christmas holidays. Because it's amazing and I love it. All this talk just makes me want to play it NAO

Haha I love when that happens.  Listening to game OSTs can be somewhat dangerous for me as well.

LIstening to game OSTs is a maximum-level hazard for me.

I think the game is designed with listening mode in mind-- that said, I still enjoyed Survival (that's the mode you unlock when you beat it, right?). I do think I would have enjoyed a sort of 'choose your own mode' like the Witcher 2 had added to it, where you could have all the scarcity and difficulty of survival but still have listen mode.

You're all good! We appreciate you all listening.

Sorry I haven't been as on top of replies lately, folks-- end of the semester and applying to post-grad programs and stuff has kept me very busy. I'm definitely reading everything you all say though, and I couldn't be more grateful for you listening!

I actually think 999 and VLR have excellent in-game soundtracks, but outside of the game some of them are less "listenable." I don't say that as a "this is bad" but in that they're so dependent on their context for their full impact to be heard. Morphogenetic Sorrow and Blue Bird Lamentation work great outside of the game, but I agree that they're not quite as easy to pick out out of the game.

New episode coming very soon! We've recorded half of it :)

Are you using the "super hearing?" If you're being surprised by people a lot, try taking things very slowly and using the hearing ability whenever you're moving around a place you don't know is empty. Should help you start getting the drop on folks.

And.... Amdapor Keep wasn't even bad on a second try! Just had to learn a key thing or two about demon wall since I didn't fall over the edge this time. Everything else about it was totally fine.

Yeah we LOLed it pretty hard. And I'm not even wearing a single piece of Darklight.
