Bloodborne trailer is so good you can set your watch to it

I LOLed.

Bloodborne trailer managed to get me excited for the game. Surprising that I wasn't already since I love Dark Souls, but all's well that ends well. That game has some fuckin' ART DESIGN.

I like it for one simple reason. It looks like it focuses on the characters, not on OMG FALCLIE MELODRAMA RAGNAORPHANCRADLEPRAETORIUS MANAVIN GOD REBIRTH WORLD LIGHTINGIUNGU.

Seriously, though. Think about how much humanity has been missing from FF casts in the XIII titles. The concept render for this game has them GRILLING, ffs. That's something people do. If nothing else, realize that this game has a tone and a thematic and is now actually FOCUSED on something. I couldn't be happier with that trailer. Also, look at early-game KH2 combat compared to late-game. It's like night and day, and I'd be shocked if this weren't similar.

I'm... that was... I mean....

They certainly haven't lost their touch for spectacle.

Thank you for sharing that, this game is actually back in my sights. The group still looks basically like Japanese Entourage, but after seeing that trailer I think the cast might grow on me.

My god that was a rad trailer. Can't wait to play this. MUSIC

Things to draw? You mean like awesome Zidane avatars for your favorite RPGFan editors?

Short response: I agree. FF needs character moments back. They make a story worth telling.

The delay in info since the rereveal is totally unsurprising, to me. They probably scrapped most of the game when they retitled it, if not more than once. The game has not literally been in continuous full development for ten years, and I seriously can't understand why people think that is the case. It's been started, scrapped, and canceled, is the most likely scenario. That's a GOOD thing. Why continue work on a project not living up to standards or with fifty different people having helmed it?That leads to the kind of confused focus that plagued XII and XIII. Starting fresh means they aren't beholden to bad, outdated, or incongruous ideas. This unfortunately means there isn't something to show for a while, but again-- who cares as long as the game benefits from it whenever we ultimately have to pay for it?

As for me, I haven't been "waiting" for it. I feel like that whole argument is sort of silly. Why build up impossible "will it live up to the wait" expectations, when instead you can say "hey this has taken a while," ignore it, and then when it comes out, enjoy it for the game it ends up being? I don't understand "my hype train has passed and now I don't care." If it comes out and it's a good game, why does how long it took to come out matter in any fashion? It's not like following it has cost anyone anything more than some time.

Plus, Tabata. It's going to be good.
428  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Gained in translation on: September 16, 2014, 08:53:21 AM
Great idea for a topic.

While the original Japanese script is by no means bad, I'm absolutely in love with FF Tactics: War of the Lions' English localization. It's easily my favorite English script in a game, and the reason I decided to become a translator. Hugely flavorful and consistent. I think it gives the game an undeniably cool voice.
429  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: kotaku article on what FFXV means to the future of JRPGs... on: September 11, 2014, 10:39:57 PM
To say the the entirety of console gaming rests with a single game is ridiculous hyperbole and nothing more.

Tabata was referring to consoles still being a viable platform in Japan in the future. He's not wrong saying that XV is potentially one deciding factor of all that.

IIRC wasn't FF7 praised as one of the things that made the PSX as popular as it was?

Normally I'd agree it's strange and bizarre to think of a game with such esteem and possibly being "system seller" just for the one game.... But c'mon, who are we kidding?  I haven't seen one FF15 news article or topics that doesn't get a TON of commentary following it (even though, delay after delay, it doesn't deserve it).  Maybe not a system seller; but I do think the hype machine works in mysterious ways.

I commented on this in my Theatrhythm review, but I think FF is absolutely still part of the conversation. People ALWAYS talk about it. They're a BFD, whether people hate it or not. Let's be honest-- we ALL want to love FFXV and say "HURRAY WE LOVE FINAL FANTASY AGAIN." No, it's not going to sell CoD numbers, but NOTHING sells CoD numbers. I would be unsurprised to hear in a year or two that people pick up a PS4/Bone to get Type-0 and FFXV (provided the latter is as good as I'm sure everyone is secretly hoping).

I watched all of I and beat II and III. Looooots of buildup, but they're pretty good games with very good stories and music. I'd be down with this. PUT IT ON VITA.

What I'd be more down with, though, is a remake of Xenogears. It needs the update far more than Xensaga does.

I'll have a review of it up soon, too! And hopefully an interview on the music show with the creators :)

Yeah, Footsteps of Time is amazing. Favorite song on that album.

Let's all be nice, people. Talk about TGS :).

Snarky question:  Why are you so inconsistent with the "if we don't cover it we can't talk about it" rule?  Why is it okay to talk about horror games for 20+ minutes and not to talk about a fighting game that's part of an RPG series and features an RPG mode?  But of course I'd feel that way, because i don't give two ****s about horror games and I love fighting games in general and P4A in particular.

It's a very simple metric, actually.

"Is Rob interested in this game?"

/said playfully since I only ever begrudgingly make us leave a game topic if it's not RPG-related.
435  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Xenoblade on: August 29, 2014, 04:41:50 PM
@glassjawsh: The 3DS just like PS3 has had way more than one big title at this point that has gotten new 'potential users' (that's what they call them) excited to buy the system(s).

While TLoU is good and a system seller, is hardly the reason I at least would recommend a PS3 considering the console having a decent variety of titles available right now, that to me is a good reason to get one, buying a system only for one solitary game is a waste in the long run. Same with the 3DS.

Yes, but only if you never buy another game for it. I'm not an idiot, so I don't buy consoles when they first come out (why pay $600 for a system with a shit game library when you can pay less than half two years later?)  TLoU was the reason I finally made the jump to PS3, just like FFVII was why I bought a playstation with all my paper route money when I was in the 7th grade.  Systems' entire libraries are always tempting, but a lot of people still need that ONE exclusive title to push them over the edge (and then the flood gates open and I BUY ALL THE GAMES!!!!head asplode!!) I held out for a LONG time on the PSP (Ys SEVEN finally got me) and now it looks like I might finally have cave on the Vita (Virtue's Last Reward) and 3DS (Xenoblade).

The 3ds is definitely the better buy if you don't have one already. The wii is competent, but mostly a joke in the long run, whereas the 3ds is still quite a viable option for gaming in general

Wii: 2/10
will not bang.
got it

I'm glad you think I'm an idiot for buying consoles early on. Bought almost all of my consoles early on and haven't regretted it once.
