451  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Music Podcast (Rhythm Encounter) Thread on: June 29, 2013, 07:07:10 PM

Also, thinking about soundtracks from games, I'm trying to think when they started becoming prevalent, at least in the western market. If memory serves me right, I want to say it was with Final Fantasy VIII. I recall my friend buying that monstrous CD collection, and going into music stores and finding piano sheet music for the soundtrack as well (or at least for "Eyes on Me"). Am I completely off base? Was it more popular than I recall? I know King's Quest VI tried (very unsuccessfully) to sort of try and push their end theme song 'Girl in the Tower' when that game came out. I am very interested in hearing what you guys think about this

Also, does anyone remember back in the PSX days, you could pop your discs into a CD player and listen to some of the tracks? Actually, now that I think about, wasn't there a music player in the system screen that you would access to manage your memory cards and such?

How funny that you should mention Girl in the Tower. Wink.

And yeah-- that was a feature called redbook audio, and some games did it while others didn't. Early Falcom disc-games did-- and it was quite neat! PSX had a music player, but it was just to play CD-based music, it didn't specifically give you access to music from the games.

Thanks very much for the feedback, everyone! This episode ended up being longer than we expected, but I figured, as you all said, we're already a heftier show than your average 1 hour podcast (which, personally, I don't mind), so we gave it a little room to breathe.

The indie adventure scene DOES have some fantasticm usic. Check out Austin Haynes' score for Cognition (like the song Life or Death from episode 3). I'm glad you enjoy the format-- what you state was ACTUALLY one of our major goals for the show-- to introduce people to music they might not have heard and some discussion of it.

Welp, that's the best thing I will see all day.

Played this until 5am last night. Unlocked armoury and did some multiclass stuff with THA/CONJ. I am buying the crap out of this game.

Oh you lucky duck. I love that game, I need to hop on again soon.

Prayer? :D

JK. Play safely. Preplan your build. Avoid those stupid sorcerers in act III.

For some reason I just read your name as unmashable potato and LOLed for like a minute. ANYWAYS. Again, thanks for the feedback and suggestions for music. I started trying to implement some of it in

http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2013/1506.html THE NEW EPISODE

and will keep it in mind when we sit down to record the next edition.

And yes, this allows for western indie titles. I want to  do a more indie-specific episode at some point, but they're definitely admissible here.

This was revealed over a month ago, yeah.

Nonetheless, this oddly has me more psyched than Wind Waker.

It should, the demo was awesome.

I have harangued them enough on Twitter and reminded them that I am both the head of music and the cohost of a music-centric podcast that I hope they c ontact me when they announce it ;)

I support this but suspect it will be shut down by the more level-headed members of the site.

Dark Souls?

I check reviews here, but am surprised by how often I disagree with them. Lost Odyssey 75%? Shining Force III 70%? Dreamcast PSO 51%?! Everyone has their own individual taste... opinions can't be invalid. Even when they are.

One important thing to keep in mind, too, is that even among staff, people have different opinions. If I had reviewed Lost Odyssey or PSO they would have gotten significantly higher scores. It's important when reading reviews to remember that there's a sort of metanarrative to them-- you have the opinions of the authors, but you should also be able to glean some indication of whether or not things in a game are objective just busted by reading several and analyzing trends.

EDIT

And I agree, Neal. Wild ARMs XF is awesome.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS BUT JUST LIKE LORRAINE BAINES-MCFLY, I'M GONNA FIND OUT.

edit:

I suspect it might be an orchestral arrangement from the same folks that were responsible for Pokemon Reorchestrated (the Kanto Symphony).

Sweet, thanks for the suggestions! Keep them coming! I'm trying to compile a giant list. I already have a big chunk of games I want to include, too.

*looks around*

Uh, yeah, I also like to listen to the music in-game first.
 *cough*

 *cough*

Okay, I lied. :)

And yeah, Tower of Heaven is a fantastic soundtrack-- and a darn fun game, too!

I don't know what it is, but I am seriously hankering to play this game more. It's kind of refreshing to be excited about and enjoying an MMO.
