586  Media / RPGFan Music Discussion / Re: RPGFan Music Podcast (Rhythm Encounter) Thread on: February 23, 2014, 01:12:38 PM
Monsoon is right, Stephen understands. :]

Sorry we've been quiet lately-- working on *cough* something I think you music-lovers will enjoy.

Al, I'm actually quite impressed by those M&MX tracks. I've wanted to play that for a while, because I'm a big fan of the genre. Those videos you linked sounded cool-- and the game looked like something I'd enjoy, too! Also, I can't tell if you're joking about Eternity or not, but that's my favorite joke song ever. It's from Blue Dragon, and it's sung by Ian Gillam from Deep Purple :D It's definitely bonkers and fun to listen to though. Editor Brian Tomlinson has nightmares related to this song, maybe you can get him to tell you why sometime.

I get sad the more I hear FE:A's OST, because I disliked the game so much but the music is SO GOOD. I love both of those that you linked. We've already got some FE:A in the upcoming episode(s), but I'll see about getting one more of yours in the audience section ;) Also, I was really surprised by that Sen no Kiseki track-- that IS ridiculous epic. Another listener, Retta (I'm listening to your picks, I promise!) sent me a ton of Sen no Kiseki tracks, and I have to say I've been more than impressed (and not just Falcom-impressed) by what I've heard from it. I might have to try it out sometime. I was a big fan of that Snowbelle City track, too.

(Also BK:O all of the time!)

I'm a big fan myself. What I've played of the PS4 beta tells me that it's going to be a great option for a lot of people.

Remote play is fun (though UI scaling and the ability to save a few different UI configurations would make it REALLY viable), and it runs nice and smoothly.

Haven't tried out mouse/kb mode on PS4 yet though.

Between a possible Phantom Dust II and a Lost Odyssey II, I'd probably have to shift my "never getting an XB1" stance to "hnngh"

I remember watching my best friend's brother beat this entire game over the course of like four weeks. Nostalgia.

I heard the English voices for about 5 minutes and then immediately switched to Japanese. A) I can understand them and B) I find them so much mismatched. I don't think it's the fault of any one cast member, but I just really don't care for how everyone sounds together.

I vastly prefer games running on PC at a high frame rate. Not going to pretend like I think consoles are better because I grew up playing them. I like PC and I like console. I also think Steam is fantastic.

Indie games are actual games, and last I checked, and many of them ARE RPGS.

The games I have played most recently:

- Final Fantasy XIV
- Bravely Default
- Banner Saga
- Final Fantasy V
- Broken Age
- Dissidia 012
- Persona 3 Portable

Not sure where the impression that I in particular don't like RPGs would come from.

And furthermore, I have no idea where you get the idea that other people on the podcast don't like RPGs, either. Appreciate the feedback, but I'm not sure where you're getting some of your impressions. I was under the impression that we had been talking about many games these days, but we'll keep it in mind.

Also, now that I'm reading the description, episode 74 wasn't an episode about specific games, it was meant to be a 'trends and predictions' episode. We've been doing that for years with the new year episodes.

The Brave/Default mechanic makes some enemies far too powerful. Trying to do the sub-scenario before the Miasma Woods, and those stupid thugs keep doing Brave > Psych Up > Strong Strike to one-shot a party member for anywhere from 1000-2000 damage. Add in the rarity of Phoenix Downs and *still* no Raise spell, and it's just an exercise in frustration. Best part is where Strong Strike only hits about half the time for party monks, for the thugs they don't seem to have any issues hitting their target.

I found the lack of funds and items irritating. Add in the strength of enemies and it became infuriating. I decided to stay in a small area, turn on the battles to 100% and steal any compound items from creatures then sell them. The wind temple works great for this. Also night time just outside the city. After upgrading some equipment and Stocking up on a few restorative I had less frustrations.

Make sure you're using net friend invites if you don't have access to actual streetpasses. You can buy Phoenix Downs very easily if you upgrade the Norende item shop. If you need money, toss a thief and a merchant into a battle, steal from every enemy, sell the items back to them on turbo. Do that on 200% encounters for a few minutes, and boom, instant funds and items :) I've earned 8k gil in like 15 minutes this way outside of Ancheim.

Merchant/Thief is the best thing ever.

Steal stuff from enemies and sell it back to them. Calculator-level hilarity, there.

Rob and I ran an interview with these guys a few months ago. They were super nice, and their game is a cool concept.

They just launched their Kickstarter, over halfway to the goal in one day. Absolutely adore that art style and the whole breakdown of the game. Hoping it turns out well!

Too bad that everything Square did post release simply undermined their artistic vision, much the same way the Compilation of FF7 made me hate everything about that world and its inhabitants.

Except Crisis Core, which I don't think you played. It was fantastic.

You're right, I was mistaken. There have only been perfect Sonic games and abysmal ones. No merely good ones.

Episode 75 is live!  Enjoy!!

Most Bravely Default fans already know if they want the game or not; I was pleasantly surprised that there's a demo at all.
but I think a lot of people are going to take some convincing after some of the recent Square-Enix RPGs of late...

Considering I've been playing almost nothing other than Square Enix RPGs lately, I think maybe I disagree. They had some rough years, but they've been excellent lately. Kind of like how people think the Sonic Cycle keeps going, yet the last three Sonic games have all been good to great. ;)
